Location, Physiography and Climate

• Gevra mining block having an area of about 19.03 sq.km is located in the central part of korba coalfield.

• Latitude 22°18’00’’ and 22°21’42’’ and Longitude 82°32’00’’ to 82°39’30’’.

• The elevation ranging from 288m to 328 m above mean sea level.

• The climate of the area is dry to moist tropical.• The temperature rises to 48° in May and drops to 7° in

December. The average annual rainfall is 1265 mm.

METHOD OF MINING

• Gevra Opencast Project is being worked by opencast methods deploying shovel dumper combination and HEMM configuration.

• Deployment of draglines is not suggested as the combined thickness of the lower most seams i.e. LK seam (>48 m) will restrict the efficient deployment of dragline mining; and the inter-parting between LK(top) and LK(bottom) does not offer adequate load to justify the deployment.

Drilling & Blasting

• Drilling and blasting would be required only in OB bench before excavation by shovels.

• 381 mm RBH drills will be deployed for shovel benches of 42 cum rope shovel whereas 250 mm RBH drill will be deployed for benches of 12 cum shovels.

• 160 mm drills have been provided for drilling in benches of bands and partings.

• The explosives consumption has been envisaged as 0.30 – 0.35 kg/cum of excavation.

Soil Disposal Planning

• The proposed sequence of mining is ideally suited for achieving the objective of placing maximum possible waste in the internal dumps.

• The opencast mining of Gevra block involves removal of 1267.00 M.cum. of Overburden.

• Presently, internal backfilling is being done in the quarry and considerable volume of OB is also being dumped in the external dump.

Pumping and Drainage

• The pumping system at Gevra Expansion Project (35 Mty) has been designed to dewater the inflow of water due to precipitation falling within the active pit limit during the monsoon season to enable the mining activity to continue round the year.

• The surface within the mine intake area is gently undulating and local drainage pattern is towards the seasonal nala i.e. Laxman Nala. This nala drains into Ahiran river located towards north east

Power Supply in the expansion report

• Gevra opencast expansion project will receive power at 33kV from existing 132/33kV substation of SECL at Gevra.

• The specific energy consumption of the project has been estimated as 3.408 kwh/t for a targeted production of 35 Mt per year.

• The break-up of the land is as follows:- The sanctioned Project Report (25 Mty) will require 3584.671 Ha of land which is already acquired. Additional land reqirement for Project Report (25 to 35 Mty) is assessed as 599.815 Ha.

Air Pollution Status

• The RDS was placed at various sampling station to collect sample .

• RDS were run for 48 hour every week (for three months to represent one season) to collect SPM,SO2 and NOX sample.

Water pollution status

• Sample were collected from different location in May 2011 and analysed.

• From the surface water sources , after removal of floating/extraneous material, 3 lt of representative water sample were collected in plastic cans as per as IS:3025 and transported to laboratory for physiochemical test.

NOISE POLLUTION STATUS

• The noise level were measured by noise level meter continuously for 24 hrs at hourly interval ,in decibel under ‘A’ weighted average .Values were reported as equivalent day , night and day night noise levels.

Control measures for air pollution

• Water spraying by water Sprinklers (7 nos. of 28 KL and additional 3 to 6 nos. of 10 KL ) are being done regularly on approach roads , coal transportation roads and within the mining area to minimize the dust generation.

• Conveyor belts for movement of total coal mined from mine pit to surface will be installed to reduce dust generation due to transportation.

• About 36.98 lakh saplings planted in project area for dust suppression.

• Drills have been fitted with dust extractors.

Control measures for noise

• About 36.98 lakh saplings already planted for noise attenuation.

• High capacity machines like 42 Cum. Shovels & 240 tonne dumpers, to be deployed in mine. This will ensure reduced number of vehicular trips, there by reducing noise levels.

• Provision of ear muffs/ear plugs to workers subjected to noise level above recommended limits.

• Routine maintenance schedules for machineries to eliminate noise as far as possible.

MINE CLOSURE PLAN

• Mine closure is not something that happens at the end of a mine’s life, rather mine closure is an ongoing series of activities starting from the planning stage of a mine and ending with a suitably restored site that can be returned to the community.
