Our Mission: ‘Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World’

Our Vision: ‘Knowing Christ & Making Christ Known’

Lent: Preparing for New Life Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all Christians. Because Sundays are always little Easters, the penitential spirit of Lent is tempered on that day with joyful expectation of the Resurrection. Lent is a time for spiritual preparation. As we remember Jesus’ journey to the cross, we are called to walk with Him and to examine ourselves and our practices of living the way of Christ. Prayer, fasting, and acts of mercy have long been understood as essential to this season of study, introspection, and repentance. Prayer and fasting help us to open our hearts and minds to more fully comprehend the way of Jesus’ self-surrender. Embodying that understanding in acts of compassion toward others mirrors God’s will for the world as our very lives take on the cruciform shape of Christ. The color purple used in this season for paraments, stoles, and banners in the sanctuary symbolizes both our penitence and Christ’s passion. Before we can rise with Christ, we seek to die to self, and by faithful imitation of the way of Christ, we hope to bear fruit for His eternal kingdom of life.

MARCH SERMON SCRIPTURE

March 03 "With Great Boldness" | 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 | Luke 9:28-36, (37-43a) | Communion Sunday

March 10 Rev. Dr. Warren Lathem preaching | First Sunday of Lent

March 17 “Risking Reputation” | Philippians 3:17-4:1 | Luke 13:31-35 | Second Sunday of Lent

March 24 “Risking Comfort and Peace” | 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 | Luke 13:1-9 | Third Sunday of Lent

March 31 “Risking Pride” | 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 | Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 | Fourth Sunday of Lent

The Commission on a Way Forward did their work. A Special General Conference was held in St. Louis from Feb. 23-26. Speeches were given. The delegates (864 delegates, half lay and half clergy) voted. Decisions were made. The majority voted in favor of the Traditional Plan (438 to 384); however, a portion of the plan has some constitutional issues. The plan was referred to the Judicial Council for review, and the Judicial Council will address the request at its next scheduled meeting April 23-25. Our Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson urged us to go back and resume our work of

making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. So that is exactly what we are going to do here at Second Avenue. Our denomination asked us to pause, listen and actively wait for the Spirit’s guidance as we reflect on Psalm 46:10, “Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future, as in ages past.” We will do just that here at Second Avenue! If you have any questions about the General Conference, please grab and ask Pastor Millie or Amy Astin, our Lay Leader. Let’s move forward in faith and hope that God will guide our present and our future. God is good. All the time! This year, Lent begins on March 6 with Ash Wednesday, and I invite you to attend the Ash Wednesday Service at 7pm and observe a holy Lent. It is a time for introspection and spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, meditation, scripture reading, alms giving, etc. to be closer to God and experience the love of God. God so loves us that He has given His only begotten Son for us! God risked Jesus Christ for us! He went all-in for us! Lent is also a period of atonement. When I explain “atonement,” I always say it is “at one-ment” with God and with people. It has a special meaning for us especially after the Special Session of General Conference this past week. We need healing; we need unity in our church! We need to love all people and continue to be Christ to all people! During Lent, I want us to ask ourselves, “What did we do that we should not have done?” “What should we have done that we did not do?” “What risk do we need to take to make Christ known in our community?” I want us to hear Jesus’ own words again during Lent, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (Mark 8:34)” “Whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. (Matthew 10:38)” What do these words mean to you? Your Pastor, Millie

On a bone-chilling, wet and dreary day it was nice to be able to look at a red rose blossom and watch its beauty grow and open to its full beauty. Thank you for remembering me and reminding me of the yet to come good things in life as well as after. Giles

We just want to say Thank you for taking the time out of your day to volunteer at Winthrop Court.

Much appreciation, Amber Ford, Activities Director

Dear Second Avenue,

I very much appreciate the rose brought to me on Valentine’s Day. I certainly miss my Second Avenue church family and being in worship.

Gob Bless, Mardelle Lynch

Dear Friends, Words written or spoken cannot express my sincere appreciation and love for the beautiful vase of red rose for Valentine. I think of you all so much and miss the church. I’ll always love you all and the church. Give all my love. Love, B. (Berta Turner)

Second Avenue United Methodist Church, Thinking of you with heartfelt thanks. I want you to know how much you’re appreciated! The fruit and Scott’s peppermint sticks reminded me of my father—he always had them at Christmas. The UM Women are so thoughtful and kind and I enjoyed their visits. And to top it off—”the Valentine rose.” Thanks to each of you. Anne Westfield

Thank you for my rose for Valentine’s Day. That was sweet of you.

Love, Cindy Smith

This year’s performances will be on March 28-31 and April 5-7 at North Rome Church of God. Program begins at 7PM nightly. Doors open at 6PM, but early arrival is encouraged. Seating is extremely limited. Admission is free and reservations are only available for program sponsors via RSVP. "Once you see for yourself the portrayal of what Jesus did for us, it makes you realize how much he really loves each one of us."

Mission Project for Lent—Venezuela NOW

During the season of Lent, we prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter resurrection with acts of love and charity for our neighbors in need. We invite you to participate with our congregation as we stand in the gap for God’s people in Venezuela! We will be collecting funds with a goal of $3,000 which will be used to purchase a shipping crate, buy prescription medicines, and ship the crate to Venezuela. The crate will also contain over the counter medicines as well as foods like dried rice and beans and powdered infant formula. Please pray and give as you feel led to help.
