Catholic Charities Volunteer Opportunities Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer? Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago is looking for helpful, friendly volunteers to serve as greeters at the hospitality table at 721 North LaSalle Street in Chicago. The volunteers will wel-come guests and help with the intake of clothing do-nations. Vocations to the Priesthood
The Archdiocese of Chicago Vocations Office helps men discern a call to the priesthood through re-treats, visits to the semi-nary and discernment opportunities. As well, the Vocation Office works with men to de-termine their eligibility
to apply to the seminary for the diocesan priesthood in Chicago. Finally, the Vocations Office actively works to create a culture supportive of vocations through promotion, education, and parish based ef-forts to raise awareness. En aquel tiempo, Jesús se hizo acompañar de Pedro, San-tiago y Juan, y subió a un monte para hacer oración. Mientras oraba, su rostro cambió de aspecto y sus vestiduras se hicieron blancas y relampaguean-
tes. De pronto aparecieron conversando con él dos per-sonajes, rodeados de esplendor: eran Moisés y Elías. Y hablaban de la muerte que le esperaba en Jerusalén. Pedro y sus compañeros estaban rendi-dos de sueño; pero, despertándose, vieron la gloria de Jesús y de los que estaban con él. Cuando éstos se reti-raban, Pedro le dijo a Jesús: "Maestro, sería bueno que nos quedáramos aquí y que hiciéramos tres chozas: una para ti, una para Moisés y otra para Elías", sin saber lo que decía. No había terminado de hablar, cuando se formó una nube que los cubrió; y ellos, al verse en-vueltos por la nube, se llenaron de miedo. De la nube salió una voz que decía: "Éste es mi Hijo, mi escogido; escúchenlo". Cuando cesó la voz, se quedó Jesús solo. Los discípulos guardaron silencio y por entonces no dijeron a nadie nada de lo que habían visto.

II Niedziela Wielkiego Postu Jezus wziął z sobą Piotra, Jana i Jakuba i wyszedł na
górę, aby się modlić. Gdy się modlił, wygląd Jego twarzy się odmienił, a Jego odzienie stało się lśniąco białe. A oto dwóch mężów rozmawiało z Nim. Byli to Mojżesz i Eliasz. Ukazali się oni w chwale i mówili o Jego odejściu, którego miał dokonać w Jerozolimie. Tymczasem Piotr i towarzysze snem byli zmorze-ni. Gdy się ocknęli, ujrzeli Jego chwałę i obydwóch mężów, stojących przy Nim.
Gdy oni odchodzili od Niego, Piotr rzekł do Jezusa: "Mistrzu, dobrze, że tu jesteśmy. Postawimy trzy namioty: je-den dla Ciebie, jeden dla Mojżesza i jeden dla Eliasza". Nie wiedział bowiem, co mówi. Gdy jeszcze to mówił, zjawił się obłok i osłonił ich; zlękli się, gdy weszli w obłok.
A z obłoku odezwał się głos: "To jest mój Syn wybra-ny, Jego słuchajcie". W chwili, gdy odezwał się ten głos, Jezus znalazł się sam.
A oni zachowali milczenie i w owym czasie nikomu nic nie oznajmili o tym, co widzieli.

19 marca Święty Józef Oblubieniec
Najświętszej Maryi Panny Odnośnie życia św. Józefa mu-simy polegać na tym, co przeka-zały o nim Ewangelie. Poświę-cają mu one łącznie 26 wierszy, a jego imię wymieniają 14 razy. Osobą św. Józefa zajmują się wprawdzie bardzo żywo także apokryfy: Protoewangelia Jakuba (z w. II), Ewange-lia Pseudo-Mateusza (w. VI), Ewangelia Narodzenia Maryi (w. IX), Ewangelia Tomasza (w. II) i Historia Józefa Cieśli (w. IV). Interesują się one rodziną św. Józefa, jego małżeństwem, rodzajem pracy i śmier-cią. Zbyt wiele w nich jednak legend, by można je było traktować poważnie. Niewiele mówią one także o latach dzieciństwa i wczesnej młodości św. Józefa. Józef pochodził z rodu króla Dawida. Wykazuje to św. Mateusz w genealogii przodków św. Józefa. Ge-nealogię przytacza również św. Łukasz. Ta jednak różni się zasadniczo od tej, którą nam przekazuje św. Mateusz. Już Julian Afrykański (w. III) wyraża zda-nie, że jest to genealogia Najśw. Maryi Panny. Św. Łukasz, który tak wiele nam podał szczegółów z Jej życia, mógł nam i jej rodowód również przekazać. Na mocy prawa lewitatu św. Józef mógł być synem Jakuba, a równocześnie adoptowanym synem Heli, noszącego także w tradycji chrześcijańskiej imię Joa-chima, który był ojcem Najświętszej Panny. Tak więc genealogia przytoczona przez św. Łukasza wy-
liczałaby przodków Maryi rzeczywistych, a odnośnie Józefa jego przodków zalegalizowanych. Taka jest dzisiaj opinia przez wielu biblistów przyjęta. Mimo wysokiego pochodzenia Józef nie posiadał żadnego majątku. Na życie zarabiał stolarstwem i pracą jako cieśla. Zdaniem św. Justyna (ok. 100 - ok. 166), który żył bardzo blisko czasów Apostołów, św. Józef wykonywał sochy drewniane i jarzma na woły. Przygotowywał więc narzędzia gospodarcze i rolni-cze. Autor Pseudoewangelii Filipa (w. III) nazywa Józefa stolarzem. Zaręczony z Maryją, Józef stanął przed tajemnicą cudownego poczęcia. Św. Józef nie był według ciała ojcem Chrystusa. Był nim jednak według prawa żydowskiego jako prawomocny mał-żonek Maryi. Chociaż więc Maryja porodziła Pana Jezusa dziewiczo, to jednak wobec prawa żydow-skiego i otoczenia św. Józef był uważany za ojca Pa-na Jezusa. Tak go też nazywają Ewangelie. W takiej sytuacji trzeba było wykazać, że Józef pochodził w prostej linii od króla Dawida, jak to zapowiadali pro-rocy. Pochodziła też według św. Łukasza z rodu Da-wida także Matka Boża. Pan Jezus pochodził zatem z rodu Dawida i poprzez Matkę (materialnie), i po-przez św. Józefa (prawnie). Zapraszamy w Uroczystość św. Jesus is transfigured in the presence of Peter, John, and James. Background on the Gospel Reading On the second Sunday of
Lent, we move from Jesus' retreat to the desert and temptation by the devil to the glory shown in Jesus' Transfiguration. On the first Sunday of Lent, our Gospel always tells the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert. On the second Sunday, we always hear the story of Jesus' Transfiguration. The report of Jesus' Transfiguration is found in each of the Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The context for Luke's Transfigura-tion story is similar to that found in both Matthew and Mark. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus' pre-diction about his Passion. After the prediction there is a discussion of the cost of discipleship in each of these Gospels. The placement of the Transfiguration story close to Peter's confession and Jesus' prediction encourages us to examine the Transfiguration in the larger context of the Paschal Mystery. The Transfiguration occurs on a mountain in the presence of just three of Jesus' disci-ples—Peter, James and John. These are among the first disciples that Jesus called in Luke's Gospel. We recently heard this Gospel at Mass, on the fifth Sun-day in Ordinary Time. Only Luke's Gospel, which often describes Jesus at prayer, indicates that Jesus is praying as his appearance changes to bright white. Luke indicates that the three disciples were sleeping while Jesus prayed. They will be sleeping again as Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane before his Passion and death. As they awake, Peter and the disciples see Jesus Transfigured and Elijah and Moses present with Jesus. Elijah and Moses, both significant figures in the history of Israel, represent Jesus' continuity with the Law and the Prophets. In Matthew's and Mark's Gospels, there is reference to conversation among Jesus, Elijah, and Moses, but only Luke's Gospel explains that this conversation is about Jesus'
later accomplishments in Jerusalem. Luke describes this as his exodus, connecting Jesus' Passion, death, and Resurrection with the Israel's Exodus from Egypt. On witnessing Jesus' Transfiguration and seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses, Peter offers to construct three tents for them. Having just awok-en, perhaps Peter's offer was made in confusion. We also notice that Peter reverted from his earlier con-fession that Jesus is the Messiah, calling Jesus “master” instead. As if in reply to Peter's confusion, a voice from heaven speaks, affirming Jesus as God's Son and commanding that the disciples listen to him. This voice from heaven recalls the voice that was heard at Jesus' baptism which, in Luke's Gospel, spoke directly to Jesus as God's Son. In his Transfiguration, we see an an-ticipation of the glory of Jesus' Resurrection. In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, the disciples keep secret what they have seen. Not until they also witness his Passion and death will the disciples un-derstand Jesus' Transfiguration. We hear this story of Jesus' Transfiguration early in Lent, but we have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of it, we antici-pate Jesus' Resurrection even as we prepare to re-member Jesus' Passion and death.
The Stations of the Cross will be prayed in English every Friday during Lent after the 7:30 A.M. Mass. The prayers that will be used can be found in the missalette.
