Up Coming Events

Principal’s Message

It’s hard to believe it’s already October! We have had a positive start to the year with a number of ac-tivities in September such as the Open House, Terry Fox Run, the AB post-secondary visit, ROCK Solid for grade 8’s, and the New Student Luncheon. October will be another busy month with events such as Pho-to Day on October 4, Interim reports, Parent-Teacher Interviews, and our first dance/social of the year. As a school community, we continue to promote our mission of Community, Discovery, and Empower-ment, as we know that the more connected and val-ued students feel at the school, the more likely they will be successful. We encourage all students to get involved in school activities and to try their best in the classroom. We also encourage all parents to be involved in your child’s education as we know that parental involvement and support makes a big differ-ence in how our students do at school. Here’s to a great October! ~ Clint Dolgopol

LEADERSHIP REPORT

Goals for 2017-2018:

Our goal in Leadership is to continue to shift our school culture to a positive

environment and enhance student life at Selkirk. Our objective is to continue

to work at a high level and bring an atmosphere that empowers and engages

life at Selkirk.

Activities Completed in September 2017:

Create Planning Groups: In September, we decided on different areas that

we thought were important to the Leadership class based on what we think

the students need and want. Some Planning Groups are: Green Committee, Media, Year Book, An-

nouncements, Dances, Finances, and Intramurals.

Terry Fox Run & Fundraising: Students from Marysville Elementary School came to Selkirk to complete

the Terry Fox Run which the Leadership class organized. As part of the Terry Fox Run, we fundraised for

Cancer Research. “Toonies for Terry” was an initiative in that ran in conjunction with the Terry Fox Run.

Our goal was to have all students donate a toonie each, with a goal of $1000. The ‘pie-in-the-face chal-

lenge saw our teachers, Mr. Bates, Mr. Treber, Ms. Giacometti, Ms. Parker and Mr. Kiever take a pie for

Terry. Constable Payne also raised $150 to take a pie in the face from a student from Marysville Elemen-

tary. As a result of our super job raising “Toonies

for Terry”, our school raised $1990 for Cancer

Research.

Green Committee: Some of the Leadership class

has ‘taken up’ an initiative to make Selkirk GREEN. Our Green Committee is

planning things around the school to make it more environmentally friend-

ly. Some things being planned are: bottle, paper, and plastic recycling in

different classrooms and other initiatives to involve the community as well.

Change in Announcements: Different people in Leadership Club are learn-

ing new skills by taking charge in doing daily announcements. Our goal is to

create video announcements and a Selkirk YouTube channel to make our announcements better and stronger.

Media: Huw Miller, Hannah Doerksen, Nathan Giguere and Liam Westergaard have started working on new videos, such as the

Terry Fox Run feature, that is designed to motivate our student body. The Media Group also works on social media posts and pho-

tography/video that documents events and cool things

around the school. In addition, we will have a video

featuring great students and student life in Selkirk.

Year Book: Aliya McLaren is leading a team that will

create a schedule to align our sports teams and events

throughout the year. Wednesday, October 4 a profes-

sional photographer will lead our team through cam-

era use.

Dances: This massive group is starting to plan out

different dates and events for upcoming dances. Look

out for the Halloween Social.

A creative collaboration brings a burst of color to the SE exterior wall of Selkirk.!

A few years ago a community project between the Kim-berley Youth Action Network and the Selkirk Art Club got underway. The goal was to design 6 large 4X8 paintings of images that highlight the beauty of Kimberley and the East Kootenays. Once completed the panels would then by hung on the exterior of Selkirk High School. ! Lori Joe, Coordinator with KYAN would like to extend a big “Thank You” to all the students that contributed their

time and talent to this project, and invite new students to help create 3 more panels. If you are interested contact Lori

HALLOWEEN DANCE/SOCIAL

Tickets will only be availa-ble at the door for $10, $5 with a Food Bank donation Stu-dents need to have paid their school fees to be able to attend the dance. If you have not done so already, please pay Ms. Smith-Hodgson at the office as soon as possible. Leadership members will be contacting parents asking for assistance with the chaperoning of the dance. If you would like to chaperone, please contact [email protected].

ART CLUB

Art Club runs every Wednesday during lunch in the Art Room. Students are encouraged to explore vari-ous media & processes in-cluding drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. The club runs as a “drop in” open studio with some guided lessons. Students are encouraged to bring their lunch and friends. We also will be meeting some

evenings at local coffee shops to bring art into the commu-nity. The Selkirk Art club is always open to new students joining regardless of experi-ence. If anyone wants more information speak to Ms. Whitesel [email protected]

BUS LANE

There has been a few incidents of late involving our buses and parents/guardians dropping off and pick-ing up students throughout the day. Please respect the bus lane and use the center lane of our parking lot for dropping off and picking up students. A re-minder as well that there is a yield sign as you make the turn to head out of the school parking lot. We have a number of vehicles not yielding leading to a safety concern for vehicles entering and leav-ing from the far lane of the parking lot. We appre-ciate your help in making our parking lot as safe as possible for everyone!
