all things above, below and off the radar

not another magazineby: Rebecca Simms, publisher

Welcome to our first issue and unlike the typical debut wel-

coming letter from magazine publishers, instead of attempt-

ing to seduce you with erotic adjectives, I rather just skip the

foreplay and get to the point. Over 90 percent of new maga-

zines that start off end up going out of business within the

same year they get started. Matter-of-fact, I could testify to

being laid off from a couple of magazines that were victims of

those harsh statistics. The Internet has stolen not just adver-

tisement revenue from the print media but also most impor-

tantly, readers. So with such grim statistics facing the

publishing industry, why start a magazine. Secret Culture is

not another magazine. Although the news stands do have

essential information that the world can not live without, I do

think a lot of that information could be condensed into a few

pages rather than featured in various cover stories by vari-

ous magazines. How many times you glanced at the news

stand and saw the same face on every publication. Although

this is great for public relation firms to see their clients on

every magazine, it would even be better if other faces and

voices received the same opportunity. Secret Culture was

created in order to publish the issues that are neglected by

most media outlets. Rather it is news, politics, entertainment,

art, fashion or food, Secret Culture’s main objective is to ex-

pose you to the best of what you have yet to encounter. You

will never see Brad Pitt on the cover of our magazine but you will read about the heroic work he is doing by helping built

homes in the areas of Louisiana that were geographically and sociologically devastated by Hurricane Katrina. You might

see one or two of our cover stories similar to one or two pub-

lications, but you will never read our editorial content or view

our photographs written and taken in the same way as the

other magazines. Our executive editor Isnel Othello, who we

snatched out of Miami Beach, once told me of the story

where he was interviewing Liam Howlett of The Prodigy when

Howlett abruptly cut him off during the interview after he

began to ask Howlett annoying repetitive questions about not

producing a record for Madonna. Thanks to Howlett, Othello

learned a little bit about investigative reporting, even though

his Prodigy assignment was a music concert preview. And

again, thanks to Liam Howlett, Secret Culture is not another

magazine; it is one of the few publications that expose you to

life’s hidden treasures. Welcome to Secret Culture Magazine,

a not so average publication, for a not so average genera-

tion…

Obama (mania) The influence of President Barack Obama on pop culture or the obsession of pop culture with Obama

When I was in college, I once wrote a column in the school’s student newspaper comparing Adolph Hitler to Maya An-

gelou. Although I honestly felt that the completely different historical figures did have one or two things in common, the

hate mail I received after the publication of the column reminded me that people actually do read and that people are pas-

sionate about others they see as role models. Graduating from school and also from student to professional journalist, I

went from the perspective of shock artist to the addressing controversial issues head on. In other words, I am not going to

compare Barack Obama with the latest person to be declared as the personification of evil. The problem I see with pop

culture’s relationship with Obama is how people easily push average folks to extraordinary statures and once these super

human like figures show any hint of mortality, the same people that push them to stardom quickly turn their backs on them

with negative verbal . . .

A quick listen to the music on Basic Vocab’s MySpace page will tell you that they

decided to take the scenic route in their ambitions to being successful artists in

the music industry. Their first single “Come Get with It” off their debut The Gen-

eral Dynamic album, is like taking a deep breath of 1990s golden age of hip-hop

and exhaling out the sound similar to Black Eye Peas prior to Fergie mixed with A

Tribe Called Quest and the slick charismatic delivery of rapper T.I. They are ar-

guably one of the most exciting hip-hop groups to come out since 2008. This ex-

citement has even caught the attention of the producers of HBO’s Entourage

which featured the “Come Get with It” single in one of the show’s episodes.

Humbly taking the achievements they have accomplished so far in, the group of

three remains grounded in hearing their song of the HBO hit show and keeps a

firm understanding that their decision to form a rap group was not based on

reaching financial goals but rather through their mutual admiration of when rap

music was educational and entertaining. With a decent amount of record spins

and iTunes sales, their music is not only educational and entertaining but also

profitable. After our music was featured on the Entourage, our music quickly

went from five digits to six digits,” says Mark Gordon. “The album was out for two

years but the exposure from Entourage increased our record spins,” says Gor-

don, who goes by just MG as a stage name…

Author, speaker and expert on the

Middle East conflict Brigitte Gabriel

is not the type of person most peo-

ple visualize when the image of

Muslim women pops on their minds

yet that is the same reason why this

Lebanese American crusader em-

barked on her journey to fight the

negative portrait of the religion of

Islam. Considering herself both

Christian and Muslim, while most

people would think a beautiful

woman such as herself would spend

more time on her looks than on reli-

gious tolerance, Gabriel has been

an intellectual on the forefront of the

battle between the left and the right

on the issue of Muslim extremism.

She found the American Congress

for Truth non-profit organization,

speaks four different languages, au-

thored two books and has been fea-

tured on the major news networks

as an expert on Islamic extremism.

As a news anchorwoman, Gabriel…

Since the introduction of Art Basel Miami

Beach to South Florida, few have under-

stood the overall impact of the festival to

Miami yet alone to the Americas. Every

year, since the early 1990s beginnings

of the fair, galleries, collectors, art en-

thusiasts and buyers have been swarm-

ing South Beach during the first week of

December to get exposed to what is

considered to be the biggest and most

prestigious art festival in the Americas.

Year after year, the festival gets bigger

and bigger and year after year, the festi-

val brings about satellite events that

overall makes the entire event an ab-

solute necessity to anyone and every-

one who love or makes art. Many Miami

Beach locals, have seen Art Basel

Miami Beach grow from obscure event

only on the radar of the establishment,

to a monumental gathering where all…

Rather its cafe con lech over Cuban toast, maybe scramble eggs

with French fries or a lovely taste of black beans and rice over a

juicy pollo roast, no matter if it is breakfast lunch, dinner or takeout;

the Las Olas Café on South Beach is a local’s favorite that attracts

everyone…
