Indian Steel Industry in April-October 2017: A Performance Summary

The following is a status report on the performance of Indian steel industry during April-

October 2017, based on provisional data released by JPC. It is to be noted that total finished

steel includes both non-alloy and alloy (including stainless steel) and all comparisons are

made with regard to same period of last year, unless otherwise mentioned.

I. Crude Steel:

• During April-October 2017, crude steel production was 58.416 million tonnes (mt), a

growth of 4.7% over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 33.515 mt during April-

October 2017 which was a growth of 6.8% over same period of last year.

• The rest i.e. 24.901 mt came from the Other Producers, which was a growth of 2%

over same period of last year.

• Overall crude steel production in October 2017 (8.65 mt) was up by 3% over

September 2017 and was up by 5.2% over October 2016.

II. Hot Metal:

• During April-October 2017, hot metal production was 38.129 million tonnes (mt), a

growth of 1.1% over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 31.355 mt during April-

October 2017 which was a growth of 2.6% over same period of last year.

• The rest i.e. 6.774 mt came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 5.3%

over same period of last year.

• Overall hot metal production in October 2017 (5.744 mt) was up by 3% over

September 2017 but was up by 2.3% over October 2016.

III. Pig Iron:

• During April-October 2017, pig iron production for sale was 5.353 million tonnes

(mt), a decline of 2.9% over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 288 thousand tonnes during

April-October 2017 which was a decline of 53.2% over same period of last year.

• The rest i.e. 5.366 mt came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 1.5%

over same period of last year.

• Overall production for sale of pig iron in October 2017 (0.777 mt) was down by 0.8%

over September 2017 and was down by 3.1% when compared to October 2016.

IV. Total Finished Steel:

A. Production for sale

• Production for sale of total finished steel at 61.375 mt, registered a growth of 5.1%

during April-October 2017 over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 35.699 mt during April-

October 2017 which was a growth of 9.2% over same period of last year.

• The rest came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 6.2% over same

period of last year.

• Overall production for sale of total finished steel in October 2017 (9.354 mt) was up

by 6.1% over September 2017 but was up by 6.9% over October 2016.

B. Exports

• Export of total finished steel was up by 57.7% in April-October 2017 (5.626 mt) over

same period of last year.

• Overall exports in October 2017 (0.778 mt) was down by 30.2% over September

2017 and was up by 44.9% over October 2016.

C. Imports

• Import of total finished steel at 4.916 mt in April-October 2017 was up by 18.9% over

same period of last year.

• Overall imports in October 2017 (0.6 mt) was down by 25.7% over September 2017

and was up by 11.5% over October 2016.

• India was a net exporter of total finished steel in October 2017 as also during April-

October 2017.

D. Consumption

• India’s consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 4.5% in April-October

2017 (50.337 mt) over same period of last year, under the influence of rising

production for sale and imports.

• Overall consumption in October 2017 (7.486 mt) was up by 1% over September 2017

but was up by 5.5% over October 2016.
