Retired Pope Benedict XVI joined Pope Francis at aceremony Saturday creating the cardinals who will electtheir successor in an unprecedented blending of papaciespast, present and future.

Benedict discreetly entered St. Peter's Basilica froma side entrance surrounded by a small entourage and wasgreeted with applause and tears from the stunned peoplein the pews. He smiled, waved and seemed genuinelyhappy to be there, taking his seat in the front row, off to theside, alongside the red-draped cardinals.

In a forceful message to more than 100 scarlet-cladcardinals arrayed before him, Pope Francis on Sunday(Feb. 23) warned them that they are “not a royal court”

and told them to avoid “habits and ways of acting typicalof a court: intrigue, gossip, cliques, favoritism and prefer-ences.”

Francis has repeatedly called on clerics to live simplyand humbly, and at a service a day earlier in which headded 19 new members to the College of Cardinals thepope also told them to work together and avoid “rivalry, jealousy, factions.”

Benedict attended Saturday’s ceremony, his firstpublic appearance at a liturgy since he stepped down, buthe was not at Sunday’s mass.

“Dear brother Cardinals, may we remain united inChrist and among ourselves!” Francis said on Sunday, repeatedly imploring the men knows as “princes of thechurch” to forgive every insult so that “our way be that ofholiness.”

“To be a saint is not a luxury. It is necessary for thesalvation of the world,” Francis said.

In an unscripted remark he looked up from his textand challenged them to undergo a “heartfelt conversion:this is something that all of us – especially you Cardinalsand myself – must do. Conversion!”

More than 150 cardinals – the exclusive club of high-ranking bishops who advise the pope and gather to electa successor from among their ranks – have been in Romefor much of the past week in large part to discuss how toreform the Curia, the papal bureaucracy.

Anger over curial dysfunction and scandals was oneof the reasons the cardinals turned to Francis, formerlyCardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, becausethey believed he was an outsider who could finally over-haul the centuries-old court system.

“A heart without love is like a deconsecrated church,a building withdrawn from God’s service and given over toanother use.”

Facebook Has Just Acquired WhatsApp In A $19 Billion Deal,

Here’s How It Affects You!The story: Facebook, the mighty giant of the internet sphere which rose through theranks of social networking and now sits on the top of the table has just made anotheracquisition: our favorite messaging app, WhatsApp is Facebook’s WhatsApp fromnow on. This time the acquisition has happened for a humongous amount of moneybut the user base it gains through the deal is big enough to probably justify$19billion. Yes, 19 billion dollars for an instant messaging app.

It is notable to observe that the amount Facebook has paid for WhatsApp isalmost 10% of its total value! Instagram was 1%, when YouTube was acquired byGoogle 10 years back, it was also less than 2% and Android acquisition was worthonly 0.08% and this should put it in perspective on how aggressive Facebook isgetting with each passing day.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the acquisition and then did an investor call toemphasize on Facebook’s endeavor to build “a more connected and an openworld”, and we agree. It is notable to note that WhatsApp is bigger in users thanTwitter or LinkedIn and hence offers a great extension to Facebook’s alreadyburgeoning user base.

If the deal doesn’t go through, Facebook will have to pay $1 billion breakupfees that is more than what it paid for Instagram.

The Opinion: Facebook’s another acquisition and another social internetservice most people use is gone in their hands. What this company is trying to dois to turn everything that we use internet for into Blue (its theme color).

The recent launch of Paper App, that’s a replacement for a news reader, andacquisition of Instagram were only ways to keep hanging on to people who seemto be moving away from one next big thing to another after every few years.

What Facebook did to Instagram after acquisition might be repeated here andwe can expect the ability to share status updates through WhatsApp very soon, though a revenue model is expected to be put in place while Zuckerberg hascategorically declined advertising.

What this means for us is that now Facebook and Google are the two big giantswho control almost everything we spend our time on the internet for. With this,Facebook has reached even the last consumer who still uses a Nokia phone basedon Symbian OS. This implies greater reach for the company and better connectivityfor us.

While most people who complain of internet addiction always make Facebookthe devil and deactivate but almost nobody ever went offline from WhatsApp afterjoining and this tells us the great deal about Facebook’s intention. It just wants tobe indispensable and take over our digital lives, or maybe real life as well?

US Court Jails 84-year-old Nun For

Breaking IntoNuclear Plant

United States: An 84-year-old nun wassentenced to nearly three years in prisonTuesday (Feb. 18) for breaking into aTennessee nuclear facility in 2012.

Sister Megan Rice and two otheranti-nuclear activists in July 2012 brokeinto a federal complex that stores en-riched uranium.

“Please have no leniency on me. Toremain in prison for the rest of my lifewould be the greatest honor you couldgive me,” Rice told the federal judge ather sentencing hearing, according to USAToday.

U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar inKnoxville said he wanted the sentence topersuade others to work for change withinthe bounds of the law.

The three activists have been incustody since last May, when a federaljury convicted them of damaging the Y-12 National Security Complex in OakRidge, and could have received up to 20years for the crime.

In addition to their sentences, thethree will receive three years of super-vised probation after they have servedtheir time.

New Delhi: The Catholic Bishops’ Con-ference of India (CBCI) today urgedthe Indian government to invite PopeFrancis to visit India.

In a letter addressed to PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh, the topbody of bishops requested him to in-vite the pontiff at an appropriate time, suitable to all concerned.

CBCI deputy secretary generalFr. Joseph Chinnayan and OscarFernandes, union minister for surfacetransport and highways met the primeminister at his office today and handedover the formal request to him.

The four Cardinals from India,Cardinal Oswald Gracias, CardinalBaselios Cleemis, Cardinal GeorgeAlencherry and Cardinal TelesphoreToppo, met Pope Francis on differentoccasions in Vatican and invited him

to visit India. The Pope showed interest in vis-

iting India but the formal invitation hasto come through the Indian govern-ment with pope being the Head of theState of Vatican, a press statementissued by the CBCI stated.

The recently-concluded CBCIPlenary Assembly at Palai, Kerala, dis-cussed the prospectus of Pope’s visitto India and decided to approach thegovernment to invite the pope.

The prime minister told the del-egation that his Government will dowhatever needed to invite the pope tovisit India.

Singh also said that Pope Francisis an outstanding personality of ourtimes and India will be honored by thevisit of such a great person.

and later claimed that the physical ail-ment is common and hence it was notdisclosed. However, if the person hadremained silent about the physical ail-ment for the fear that it might affect theother person’s willingness to marry, then the silence amounts to fraud. If thepurpose of the concealment was toelicit consent of the other spouse, thenthe marriage would be declared an-nulled by any ecclesiastical tribunal.

The priests therefore need to takeutmost care while filling up the pre-nuptial enquiry forms to prevent pilingup of cases before the tribunals.

Aam Admi PopeWhile Kejriwal’s ‘Aam Admi Party’

(AAP) has made waves in our country,Catholics too can rejoice now as theyhave an AAP (Aam Admi Pope) in theVatican, Pope Francis. The short timehe has been in office has won himaccolades and worldwide adulationfrom all sections of society, despite thecries in the church for more transpar-ency, accountability and change grow-ing louder by the day. A church for thepoor has now arrived it seems, unlikethe hypothetical and much peddled‘Option for the poor’ church- caption ofthe past, which was diametrically op-posite to the existing ground realities.Pope Francis has himself shown us theway in all simplicity by divesting him-self of all the paraphernalia and trap-pings of papal power in the Vatican andliving a down-to- earth life, in the sim-plicity of Jesus Christ. It is for this rea-son that Pope Francis advised the 19newly ordained Cardinals to avoid be-having as if they were in a royal court. The message then is clear: we do notneed Princes or Lordships in the churchof Christ, but shepherds who knowtheir sheep, and their sheep who knowtheir masters.

—A. F. Nazareth, Alto Porvorim.

Importance ofPre-nuptial

Enquiry FormIn a Catholic Christian marriage,

there is a very important and manda-tory procedure of Pre-nuptial Enquiry.According to the instructions written inthe “Pastoral Handbook for the Clergy”published by the Archdiocese ofBombay in 2004 with forward by theCardinal Oswald Gracias, filling up thePre-Nuptial Enquiry Form is part of thepriest’s responsibility. The priest shouldhave the Pre-Nuptial Enquiry Form filledin his presence, or himself fill it up (if theparty is unable to do so), guiding andinstructing the party at every step withregard to the true meaning of marriageas taught by the Church. Also, regard-ing Question No. 19 of the pre-nuptialenquiry form, which reads as follows:Are you aware that concealing of aserious ailment (e.g. AIDS, mental ill-ness, impotency, etc.) could result inthe nullity of your marriage?, the par-ties should be made aware by the priestthat since marriage is seen very muchas a relationship of mutual self-givingand openness, obviously anything likedeceit or concealing of serious ailmentswould be inimical to and destructive ofthese qualities and could result in thedeclaration of nullity of the marriage.

According to Canon 1098, a per-son contracts invalidly who enters mar-riage deceived by fraud, perpetrated toobtain consent, concerning some qual-ity of the other party which of its verynature can seriously disturb the part-nership of conjugal life. The error neednot be the result of a positive fraud, butcan be concealment of some qualitywhich the other party has a right toknow and which would either gravelydisturb the marriage either objectivelyor subjectively. A person who concealsan objectively or subjectively gravequality deprives the other party of free-dom in choosing to marry.

There are cases where onespouse has concealed certain physi-cal ailment from the other spouse andfrom the priest while filling up the pre-nuptial enquiry form before marriage

Many in our community have neverdone anything terribly wrong, butthey never accomplish anything sig-nificant. And it is said, “That’s theway many in our community livetheir lives.” We lack this fundamen-tal knowledge of living and keepingup with democratic competition, andhave become victims of stress andstrain, gossip and jealously. TheChristian community thus goesthrough a mechanical way of livingmerely following a routine set byour predecessors and, as a result,is not present in the mainstream ofpolitical parties despite substantialcontribution to society and the coun-try with the finest schools, collegesand hospitals. Our efforts towardsnation building have been grosslyoverlooked. The elections are still afew months away. But it is the com-munalists who alone are canvass-ing. Yes, it’s looking bad, but theyare not in power. Not yet! And whatare we doing?

Can we, Christians of Mumbai ingeneral and Catholics in particularjust sit back and allow people ofother faith persuasions to do injus-tice to our community? And thisafter having had themselves edu-cated in institutions run by us, not tomention the use they make of somany other facilities we offer? Doesthe privilege of participating in civicand political activities belong to the

people of other faiths? The answeris a big NO. Any and all activity, whether civic, political or any otherthat brings about peace and happi-ness in and general uplift of our

your conscience for those who un-derstand our needs and indeed theneeds of the people general ratherthan their own selfish wants. It is inthis context that we need to under-stand the CCBI’s assertion, viz.: “Atthe outset the Catholic Churchwishes to make it clear to all, thatthe Catholic Church does not iden-tify herself with any political party. But the Catholic Church has a re-sponsibility as bishops to urge ev-ery eligible citizen to exercise his/her right and duty to vote and do soprudently, carefully and judiciously. We must be convinced that everyvote does count. We owe it to our-selves, our children and our coun-try not to let go of this opportunity toget involved in bettering the history, culture and destiny of our nation.”

Very frankly, the Church in India—and, certainly, the Archdiocese ofBombay—has all the resourcesanybody could possibly hope for toconsolidate and guide Christians ingeneral and Catholics in particular. If only the Church could stand herground, the diocese would havethe weight of our enlightened com-munity opinion behind her, and the

community per se belongs to all ofus individually and collectively.

Therefore, all of us who believe inChrist, are duty bound to lend ahelping hand towards changing, building and improving ourcommunity’s conditions rather thanmerely uttering or singing “We arethe body of Christ” or “We are onein the Spirit, we are one in the Lord”.If we, as a community of believersfail in our duty, how we can callourselves Christians? Your homeand community should be the cen-tre, not the boundary, of your affec-tion.

In this respect, it may be arguedthat the Church does not guide usor tell us as to what to or drink orwhen/where/how to sleep. So thenwhy do we need to wait for theChurch to guide us or tell us who tovote for? You ought to vote as per

Wilderness...!... The Christian community thus goes through a me-chanical way of living merely following a routine set byour predecessors and, as a result, is not present in themainstream of political parties despite substantialcontribution to society and the country with the finestschools, colleges ... hospitals ...Can we, ... just sit back and allow people of other faithpersuasions to do injustice to our community?...

support of most—if not all—of hermembers.

Although our community does havethe Bombay Catholic Sabha (anNGO) as well as the Civic & PoliticalCell of the Archdiocese of Bombay, neither has covered much groundfrom where they have started. Norare they able to take under their foldthe local parish groups operatingunder different names though hav-ing the same agenda and are vis-ibly very active. Frankly, it’s ratherdifficult to believe that this is hap-pening at all given the tremendoustalent our community has and thecontribution it has been making tothe nation. Isn’t it time we consoli-date ourselves into a valuable votebank and determine how we goabout doing what we so rightlyshould with politicians and politicalparties of every hue masqueradingout there in the open with their ownselfish, self-centred and self orientedagenda!

Why We Need The AAP?

Ours is a country with Richpeople dominating the scene.Much effort has gone into re-

ducing this anomaly but with little suc-cess. Not that this cannot be achievedbut it can definitely be decreased. It isthe system created by corrupt politi-cians that needs a complete overhauland to achieve these goals, we all mustwork unitedly in getting rid of:

1. The rogues, rascals and freebooters who amass wealth at thecost of the common man.

2. The cult of the VVIP culture, cre-ated by selfish politicians with taxpayer’s money that even super-sedes the culture of the British Raj.

3. Important decisions of governancetaken by elected representativesto suit their own needs while ignor-ing the basic needs of the verypeople who voted them into power.

4. Scamsters and corrupt politicianswho have mastered the art of theirgame.

5. Unwanted security being providedto those in power, creating avacuum in areas vital for the com-mon man.

6. Free lavish homes to politicians, while the aam aadmi struggles toseek a roof above his head at anexorbitant cost.

7. Free luxury transport to electedrepresentatives while the juntafights to get a foot hold in an over-crowded train or bus.

8. Election tickets being given totainted candidates.

9. The politician who is responsiblefor increase in prices of essentialcommodities

10. Elections being conducted by of-fering of Freebies

The above are just a few of the ills thathave existed in our country for the last60 years and if eliminated will certainlygo a long way in improving the lifestyle

of the common man. This is not a tallorder. Making it a reality is in our hands.

The power of the people until nowrestrained by clever politicians, needsto be exploited to the full potential, whoknows that if the same is leashed to thepeople will spell disaster to the electedrepresentative. Thus they keep alivetheir nefarious activities to suit theirown needs. We the people have thepower and must resolve to put an endto this game if we desire to make ourcountry shine like never before.

We, in India have the privilege of beingrated as ‘the world’s largest democ-racy’ but this privilege is restricted onlyto numbers by virtue of our population. In participation we rate as lowest in theworld. The only privilege we enjoy isthe right to vote. And once having castour franchise we have to sit back andendure what is in store for us for thecoming 5 years. However the AAP is allset to change this. The very concept of‘elected representatives’ handling alldecisions will be a thing of the past.Making the people involved in the ac-tual running of the country is the hall-mark of the AAP This change will soonherald DTH Democracy.

Fortunately, the ‘winds of change’ areslowly blowing over the plains andpeople are getting more and moreaware of their rights. Hopefully, theright to recall an elected representativefor non performance will soon be en-acted as a ‘Law’ and those who com-

pete for power and position will realizetheir responsibility.

For over 60 years our elected repre-sentatives have fooled us. Amassinghuge wealth is their only aim. Logicallyhow can a crorepati serve us? We needpersons of our class and stature tounderstand our problems and needs.

Remember the issue on attempts madeto protect convicted politicians. Thanksto the judiciary these politicians werekept in place. The current set of politi-cians are experts in manipulating theentire system to suit their corrupt prac-tices.

A few days back we have witnessedwhat has taken place in parliament. From pepper sprays the day is not farwhen blood shed will be the order ofthe day. Do we want to elect suchpeople? And just be a bystander to theevents that bring shame and disgraceto our country. We now have an alter-native, let us use it.

For 60 years we hardly had a choice. Most of us felt that it was better to let theknown ‘devil’ govern us and the politi-cal party coming to power was fullyaware of this. It gave them enoughammunition to build their own empires.Today the choice to vote for a party thatbelieves in ‘Secularism’ ‘Peoples de-mocracy’ and most important the will-ingness and ambition to curb corrup-tion is right before us – The AAP. Wemust not allow this opportunity to slipaway.

Finally, we the people must not forgetour duties and responsibilities if we arehoping for a change. Our duty to voteand vote for the right candidate/party isa responsibility we cannot ignore if wewish to make our country a better placeto live. Let us make use of the wonder-ful alternative at our disposal.

Or else let us accept the governmentwe deserve.

I heard the Sunday gospel readingand questioned whether it wasreally sound advice. “Love your

enemy. When you are slapped onone cheek, offer the other. Walk thesecond mile, etc. etc.” I have triedsome of it and it works. When peoplecome to hit me, I go up to them andsay “Hit me”. They stop, wonderingwhat’s going on. “Is this guy crazy orsomething?”

Faith is belief that the impossiblecan happen. Hence, in our stupidity,we don’t stop even when everythingis going wrong. I am considered asimpleton if I say I shall try to getthings done without paying a bribe. The truth is I just don’t have the money.I once was trying to clear some goodsthrough customs. The officials hadslapped a heavy duty on the goods.Logic didn’t work. Only some mon-etary consideration could do the need-ful. I was young and enterprising inthose days. I decided to meet the topman. He was having his lunch. I satoutside his office and caught him ashe went to the wash-room. Experi-ence has taught me that, no matterhow high up you are, you need to goto the wash-room occasionally. Afterhearing my elevator pitch he calledthe person concerned admonishedhim for harassing me and told me togo down and the job would be done.I say it was the Hand of God. Othersmay say it was just Good Luck

Faith removes Fear. They saythe worst fear is of death. At my age Ithink “Eternal Rest” may not be sucha bad idea after all. I have survivedseveral operations including a heartby-pass. In management you aretaught about planning and control-ling the future. I now live from day today as everyday brings new chal-lenges. I now know what the phrase“Give us this day our daily bread”means. Daily we have to tackle newsituations for which there are no pre-

cedents to fall back on to determinehow they are to be handled — Yourgas connection is cut as your Aadharcard has revealed that you have mul-tiple connections. The bank accountof your daughter is frozen as it hasn’tbeen operated for 3 years as she is inCanada. You got to submit a KYCform for any service you want. Andyou got to manage all this while han-dling the house-hold chores, whichhas become necessary as the maidservant didn’t turn up.

Faith teaches us to control yourtongue and your temper. You believe

internal struggles. Why hanker after amedal from someone who doesn’teven know what you did and what youare worth.

Faith prevents you from enjoy-ing the feeling of “Hurt”. It is a goodfeeling to make someone realize thatthey have done you a wrong. It is niceto feel sorry for oneself and look for-ward to some evil to befall the onewho has hurt you. Sulking is a goodTime Pass, but we can’t afford thisluxury when there is so much to do

Faith is believing that whateverhappens, good or evil, to them thatlove the Lord all things whatsoeverturn together unto good. It is consol-ing to know that there is someonepowerful looking after your interests. After all at my age I realize that evenbeing alive is a miracle. When I hearthe stories about those who have hadto overcome insurmountable oddsand disabilities I salute the humanspirit. God never destroys. He createsnew life out of what we consider use-less. When I was depressed my wifewould always say, “When one doorcloses, God opens another” and sofar it has always come true.

Bliss……

Each one of us craves to behappy, to be blissful and content. However, today a number

of us are slowly slipping in the arms ofanxiety and stress. Ask the psycholo-gists - they are witness to the level ofgrowing anxiety and stress. Depres-sion which was known only amongadults is now seeing a slow but steadytrend of children falling victim to it. Lifekeeps getting more convenient thanever, what with sophisticated gadgetslike washing machines, cars, smartphones, dishwashers, air-conditionersand the like on the rise even as ourdispositions keep getting sadder.

Could the reason for the prevailingstate of affairs be that we have moretime on hand today than ever before?Perhaps we are too heavily conditionedby our parents and peers, education-ists and the media to keep looking forways and means to get better, richerand whatever in every facet of our lifeso as to be happy in our present andget ready to be happier in the future. And so we land up in the rat race sayingto ourselves, “I do need to have thebest! My job, my spouse, my children,

friends and social media interactionshave to explicitly replicate my expecta-tions!”

My suggestion here may not be theanswer to all problems related to stressand anxiety but will definitely help manywho suffer with it become better insome way or other. We are all con-stantly thinking about something. If wechange our thoughts consciously tothink only positive thoughts, maybeaffirmations or planning for a betterday, closing procrastinated tasks, giv-ing time to those who love and valueyou – then, slowly, you begin to realizethat life cannot but get better. Alsohelpful in this regard would be, keep-ing ourselves busy with something prof-itable or learning something new.

Further, parents need to frequently telltheir kids that they love them uncondi-

tionally, instead of constantly complain-ing about what they are unhappy aboutwhich, by the way, some kids end uplearning from their parents. They needto work towards positive goals (notnagging, exaggerated, unachievableones) for their kids and for themselves. You’ve got to teach your young how tovalue people more than things whatwith the growing trend these days be-ing just the opposite. Once spousesare bored with each other they cheat orhead for a divorce, love coming to betreated more as a temporary feeling, not something that is consciouslyworked on for life.

So, though this may sound cliché, weare, however, going to live this life justonce. Let us de-clutter our minds of allnegativity, forgive people includingourselves, realize and reaffirm to our-selves that we certainly are the best! That we are doing just fine and gatherall our energies culminating into posi-tive thought and vice versa!

After all, haven’t we often heard it said,“You are a product of your ownthoughts”?

Vatican City:- According to VaticanRadio, Pope Francis receives a fewthousand letters a week, which Corre-spondence Director Msgr. GiulianoGallorini notes are read more with thepontiff’s “heart” than his “mind.”

“He reads these letters more withthe heart than with the mind; to sharethe suffering” of others, Msgr. Gallorinitold Vatican Radio on Jan. 28.

The letters, packages, drawingsand objects that arrive at the Vaticanon the Pope’s behalf are sent from allover the world, and are sorted by theOffice of Correspondence of the Pope, located in the Vatican’s Apostolic Pal-ace, which Msgr. Gallorini directs.

In their letters people ask formany things, the priest explained, whether it is advice on how to managea turning point in their lives or askingfor wisdom in the midst of hopelesssituations. Some have even writtenthe Pope a poem, or sent gifts, such asa scarf.

Most of the requests made arefor “support and prayer,” he stated, but many also regard “the moment weare living - difficulties, especiallydiseases...asking for prayers for chil-dren, also describing situations of eco-nomic hardship.”

Reflecting on why so manypeople write to the now-famous SaintMartha house of the Vatican where thePope resides, Msgr. Gallorini observedthat it is because the people of todayfeel that Pope Francis is “near” tothem in a special way.

“They try to feel the closeness ofthe Pope who captures their suffering, their distress, who is close to them inprayer.”

“Then, for what is possible, wehelp by directing requests to specificoffices,” the priest continued, addingthat “for example the requests for eco-nomic help are forwarded to the dioc-esan Caritas so that they can be veri-fied, either immediately or more op-erational."”

Managing the high volume ofletters is a small team of four, consist-ing of Msgr. Gallorini, a Religious Sis-

ter, and two others, Vatican Radio re-ports, revealing that the first step in theprocess of sorting is to divide every-thing by language.

Afterwards the letters are openedand read by the Office of Correspon-dence due to Pope Francis’ time con-strictions, and the office then distin-guishes the simple letters of greetingfrom those who seek solace and spiri-tual support from the Pope, or haveand urgent need. These are the lettersthat arrive to his desk, the bishop ex-plained.

“There are a little more delicatecases like cases of conscience,” Msgr.Gallorini noted, and “in this case, anote is made and passed to the secre-taries because the Pope examines thecontent directly.”

“He definitely reads them, putshis initials and directs us on how weshould respond.”

Although Pope Francis is unableto respond personally to all of the let-ters he receives, the priest assured thatall who write the pontiff do receive aresponse expressing gratitude in thePope’s name.

Writing the response of the Popeis a special task for those who do it,Msgr. Gallorini observed, because it

requires a reply done with the specifictone of the Pope’s own style.

“He reads these letters more withthe heart than with the mind,” the priestexpressed, highlighting that their jobthen is “to share the suffering” of thosewho write “and search to find the rightwords to express how the Pope reallywants to express himself.”

“Proximity, sharing...and truly inthe style of sharing,” are the key themesto keep in mind when the responsesare written, he continued, adding that“moreover the Pope has always saidthat the priest should live among theflock, the sheep. Hear and live theexperience with them.”

And there, almostwithout noticing itat first, the devil

confronted the JewishMessiah. A sandstormwas gathering its force asis common in the desertwilderness. Christ stoodup to meet the dramaticmoment which would ap-pear to challenge his hu-manity after his forty daysof fasting, prayer andmeditation. The New Adam was weaknot in spirit but in the flesh. He washungry Scripture informs us as helooked at the Evil One.

Satan was determined to destroy Jesus, who was like man in every way, exceptsin. What the demon did not considerwas the fact that Christ had been nour-ished inwardly after forty days of fast-ing and prayers.

“If you are the Son of God, commandthese stones to become loves of bread,”said the tempter. Christ replied, “Onedoes not live by bread alone, but byevery word that comes from the mouthof God.” (Mat.4:3).

The devil was severely wounded bywhat he heard. Satan tried anotherdevious temptation. He took Jesus tothe holy city, to the top of the temple, while the sandstorm grew in strength.“If you are the Son of God, throw your-self down, for it is written, ‘He will com-mand his angels concerning you,’ andon their hands they will bear you up, sothat you will not dash your feet againsta stone”. (Mat.4:6). Jesus calmly re-plied “Again it is written, ‘Do not put theLord your God to the test.’ “

The storm of swirling sand grew inintensity and howled with potent rage –its dust burned the eyes. For the thirdtime Jesus was taken by the Evil One to

the top of the highest mountain, andwas shown the ‘Kingdoms of the worldand their splendor’. “All these I will giveyou, if you will fall down and worshipme.” Christ, the Messiah stood firmand unruffled, saying: “Away with you,Satan! For it is written, ‘Worship theLord your God, and serve only him.’(Mat.4:9-10).

Jesus was triumphant. The devil wasshamed and screamed in defeat whenhe was blown into the fury of the ragingsandstorm.

Changing man from his environment ofsin, temptation, greed, violence andhate has never been easy. God prom-ised a Messiah. A Redeemer who wouldbring the Good News to help mankindregain heaven, and receive his destiny. In the Book of Isaiah 35:4 the prophetaddresses the fainthearted not to fear,to have courage for God will come tosave us.

The Catholic Church found in the tur-bulent history of the Jewish peopledramatic stories of temptation, sin andthe intense desire for redemption. Textsenriched with facts and prophecies ofthe coming Messiah grew in volumes.Christ was to be the New Adam, theGod-Man with an infinite and supremevision giving humans the power to un-derstand the out-pouring of God’s lovefor him, and to discover redemption in

His mercy.

The Gospel of St. Lukeinforms us that “allflesh shall see the sal-vation of God”. (3:6).The prophet Isaiahwent on to declare theword of God: A Virginwould conceive andhave a son and hisname would beEmmanuel. (7:14).

Throughout Advent the Saving Gift ofGod is in the liturgy. John the Baptistwas the son of Zachary, and in thedesert the Word of God came to him,the promise of redemption. Johnpreached the baptism of penance forthe remission of sin. This had also beenpredicted by Isaiah (Luke.3:2-6).

The Christ conquered Satan and histemptations, after forty days of fasting.Jesus showed his followers the powerof faith. The spiritual preparation dur-ing lent is in many ways the corner-stone of the liturgical year. The fortydays of prayer, penance and absti-nence is our pilgrim journey towardsEaster. The Constitution of the SacredLiturgy states: “The two elements whichis character-eristic of lent – the recall-ing of baptism, and penance (No.109).”

The Redemption promised by God,makes the desire for God become adesire for Christ. Christians can unre-servedly rejoice in the Word of Godwith impunity and passion – His prom-ise fulfilled – His love and forgiveness,a supernatural gift to meditate on in thisseason of Advent to Easter.

In the next installment we will delve intothe Transfiguration and Suffering of theMessiah to better understand His Pathto Glory. Now is the moment in time forus to renew ourselves in reflectiveprayer.

Executive SummaryWithin the overall outline of the busi-ness plan, the executive summary willfollow the title page. The summaryshould tell the reader what you want. This is very important. All too often, what the business owner desires isburied on page eight. Clearly statewhat you’re asking for in the summary.

The statement should be kept shortand businesslike, probably no morethan half a page. It could be longer, depending on how complicated theuse of funds may be, but the summaryof a business plan, like the summary ofa loan application, is generally no longerthan one page. Within that space, you’llneed to provide a synopsis of yourentire business plan. Key elements thatshould be included are:

Business concept –Describes the business, its productand the market it will serve. It shouldpoint out just exactly what will be sold,to whom and why the business willhold a competitive advantage.

Financial features.

Highlights the important financial pointsof the business including sales, profits, cash flows and return on investment.

Financial requirements -Clearly states the capital needed tostart the business and to expand. Itshould detail how the capital will beused, and the equity, if any, that will beprovided for funding. If the loan forinitial capital will be based on securityinstead of equity, you should alsospecify the source of collateral.

Current business position –Furnishes relevant information aboutthe company, its legal form of opera-tion, when it was formed, the principalowners and key personnel.

Major achievements –Details any developments within thecompany that are essential to the suc-cess of the business. Major achieve-ments include items like patents, pro-totypes, location of a facility, any cru-cial contracts that need to be in placefor product development, or resultsfrom any test marketing that has beenconducted.

DO YOU KNOW?

What is meant by afixed maturity plan?

It is basically a closed-end fundthat invests in debt and moneymarket instruments of the samematurity as of that stated maturityof the plan. The focus of a fixedmaturity plan is to provide a streamof income through interest pay-ments, while exposing the inves-tor to a lower level ofrisk.Investments are made in fixedincome securities which maturein a year. These are close endedfunds and once the new fund offercloses no further investment isallowed. These funds are opentypically for a couple of days andno new offers are accepted oncethe new fund offer closes. Theprevalent yield of the underlyingsecurity minus the expense ratiomainly cost of running these fundsgives the indicative yield. Expenseratio may be in the range of 0.5-1.0% in a typical fixed maturityplan. A bank fixed deposit actu-ally prints the amount thereby in-dicating the actual return .In afixed maturity plan the returns areindicative albeit higher than a fixeddeposit.Unlike the bank FDs,where one can opt for prematurewithdrawal by paying a small pen-alty, the exit from a fixed maturityplan is very difficult.

on the story ofstone soup, butthey all involve atraveler cominginto a town besetby famine. Theinhabitants try todiscourage thetraveler fromstaying, fearinghe wants them togive him food. They tell him in no uncertain termsthat there’s no food anywhere to befound. The traveler explains that hedoesn’t need any food and that, infact, he was planning to make a soupto share with all of them. The villagerswatch suspiciously as he builds a fireand fills a cauldron with water. Withgreat ceremony, he pulls a stone froma bag, dropping the stone into the potof water. He sniffs the brew extrava-gantly and exclaims how deliciousstone soup is. As the villagers beginto show interest, he mentions howgood the soup would be with just alittle cabbage in it. A villager bringsout a cabbage to share. This episoderepeats itself until the soup has cab-bage, carrots, onions, and beets—indeed, a substantial soup that feedseveryone in the village.

This story addresses the human ten-dency to hoard in times of depriva-tion. When resources are scarce, wepull back and put all of our energy intoself-preservation. We isolate ourselvesand shut out others. As the story ofstone soup reveals, in doing so, weoften deprive ourselves and everyoneelse of a feast. This metaphor playsout beyond the realm of food. Wehoard ideas, love, and energy, think-ing we will be richer if we keep to themto ourselves, when in truth we make

the world, and ourselves, poorer when-ever we greedily stockpile our reserves. The traveler was able to see that thevillagers were holding back, and hehad the genius to draw them out andinspire them to give, thus creating aspread that none of them could havecreated alone.

Are you like one of the villagers, hold-ing back? If you come forward andshare your gifts, you will inspire othersto do the same. The reward is a ban-quet that can nourish many.

The Most EffectiveMethod of Motivation

If you reward someone for doing something, they will usually respond by getting it done.

We often adopt this concept in lifefrom childhood on into adult hood, but is this the most effectivemethod of motivation?

The best way to motivatepeople - at school, at work or athome — is to support their senseof autonomy. Explaining the rea-sons why a task is important andthen allowing as much personalfreedom as possible in carryingout the task is far more stimulat-ing. It leads to a greater sense ofcommitment. It has also beenshow to be a much more effectiveapproach than the standard sys-tem of reward and punishment. We are all inherently interested inthe world so why not nurture thatinterest in each other? Instead ofasking, how can I motivatepeople? We should be asking, how can I create the conditionswithin which people will motivatethemselves?
