WHAT DOES IT DO?OCTAVE delivers an access control platform through a trustedvoice authentication service for use in data-sensitive andmission-critical applications in real business/commercialenvironments. OCTAVE relieves users from the inconvenienceof textual passwords and reduces the economic and practicalburden on service providers regarding password loss andrecovery. The OCTAVE platform is based on state-of-the-artspeaker verification technologies that offer effective robustnessto environmental variability and various types of spoofing, thanks to detection of fraudsters impersonating other users.

HOW DOES IT WORK?From a user's perspective, biometric systems perform aconceptually simple task - recognition of persons. However, their implementation is generally highly complex. The generalapproach involves the enrolment of a person in the system andthe learning of a biometric model. At the time of use, a newbiometric sample is compared to the model. The biometricsystem will then decide if the new sample is sufficiently closeto the model in order to confirm (or not) the person's identity. In the case of speech, the biometric model is sometimesreferred to as a voiceprint.

WHAT IS A VOICEPRINT?Hundreds of different voice characteristics can be measured. Some of these characteristics can be used to identify thespeaker. It is the role of the voiceprint to capture these in acompact form suitable for biometric recognition. The voiceprintusually takes the form of a manifold model, which supportsthe application of sophisticated pattern recognition techniquesto deliver the best possible performance.

HOW SAFE IS IT TO SHARE MY VOICEPRINT?In order to identify a person by vocal means, a sample of theirspeech must be analyzed and compared to their voiceprint storedsafely in the authentication server. Here, in the digital domain, sophisticated mechanisms can be installed to protect the voiceprint.

DOES IT ALWAYS WORK?Voice biometrics has shown considerable effectiveness in diverseaccess control scenarios and also has the potential to protectagainst fraud (spoofing). Voice biometrics offers a potentially morereliable and convenient means of identity verification than thatprovided by PINs, passwords, tokens and/or other authenticationmeans used on the Internet.

WHY SHOULD YOU USE IT?Voice biometrics is basically more efficient and convenient thanalternative authentication methods that require users to rememberor store something that can be forgotten, misplaced, shared, stolenor otherwise compromised. OCTAVE exploits the advantages of voicebiometrics, and in addition provides strong protection from maliciousattacks, through the use of advanced security measures.
