Sedgehill School in partnership with Hayes School
It has been a relief to get back to business
as usual this week now that Ofsted have
gone. The report is in its final stages of
checking and will be sent out to you all
early next week. While the report agrees
with the school that there are still areas of
school that require improvement it is a
very positive account of where school is at
and how strong its journey of improvement
is.
As the end of the first half term approaches we end one recruitment campaign—we
had our last open morning for year 6 students this morning—and begin another as our
sixth form open evening is the week after the half term holiday. Our sixth form now
numbers 350 and we are now drawing significant numbers of students from other
local schools to complete their post-16 studies at Sedgehill. We are really excited
about the fact that for the first time we have three year 13 students applying to
Oxbridge: good luck to Michael Powell Davies and Jake Ayrton, both of whom are
applying to study English at Cambridge and Charles Nzomo who is applying to study
maths, also at Cambridge.
I am also delighted to announce that one of our year 12 students, Titanya Murdoch,
has been elected Deputy Young Mayor for Lewisham. This is a huge achievement—
Titanya ran a brilliant campaign supported by an unbelievable hard working team of
students and fully deserves this great honour. I am sure you will be hearing loads
about her year in office throughout the
coming year.
I hope you enjoy this week’s newsletter. Have a great weekend.
Mr K Mackenzie Head Teacher
Head start for business students
Several Sedgehill School students in year 11 are taking part in the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Head Start programme. Students attend sessions on a Tuesday from 4:30pm to 6:00pm and immerse themselves in sessions run by industry professionals. Sessions attended so far have included a focus on branding, planning and enterprise. Students are given the opportunity, after fierce scrutiny from the Royal Bank of Scotland’s senior management team, to set-up and run their own business at Lewisham Market. We look forward to seeing which students make the most profit. Well done to all the young entrepreneurs! Mr Armstrong & Miss Childs Business Studies Department

Shortlisted Art work by Sedgehill Student
Our year 12 sixth form artist and ambassador Bethany Flowerday exhibited her work at the PiXL conference last week. PiXl forms a group of over 100 schools nationwide that lead the country in terms of achievement and cutting-edge pedagogy. Bethany’s work, based upon the theme of Force had been shortlisted for a prize following a nationwide competition with hundreds of entries. Take it from me, she is the real deal when it comes to painting. Artist Kelvin Okafur judged the winner and, if you have seen his work, you may be unsurprised to learn that he awarded first prize to another, rather safe and traditional painting – which I have to say wasn’t a patch on Bethany’s Opus Mag-nus. I think it was Van Gogh whose true genius was never recognised in his own lifetime… Unfazed by this minor setback in her soon-to-be prestigious career in the arts, Bethany enjoyed showing off her work and it was great to watch her soak up the attention from her awestruck public. There can be no doubt that all who saw it thought her work was a knockout. Bethany is planning on a career in architecture; if she can bring to bear the same level of commitment and endeavour to that discipline I imagine she will be just as great a success as she has been as a painter. Well done, Bethany – we are very proud of you. Mr D Fisher Head of Design Foundation

Fulham/Sedgehill year 6 7 A Side Football Tournament
At the start of October over 120 year 6 primary students took part in a 7 aside football tournament at Sedgehill astro-turf. The teams took part in a round robin tournament which was fiercely fought but with excellent sportsmanship. The winners of both the boys and the girls tournament was Launcelot Primary School. Both teams showed excellent skills and talent. A number of these students have been invited to attend our Fulham primary development programme at Sedgehill every Monday to develop their skills and talent further in football. A big well done to Alex Marshall, Jesse Omotoye, Ted Jones-Keen, Troyan Gillespie, Ariste Mukasa and Erin Leka, all of these students are in our sixth form and part of our Fulham Football team, who did an excellent job refereeing and scoring all the games that took place. A number of primary teachers commented on how professional and hard working our students were in running this tournament. Well done to Launcelot Primary School and our sixth form students. A – Apostrophes
There’s a lot of confusion in the world about how to use apostrophes. It seem’s that some peo-
ple think that you just put apostrophe’s whenever word’s end with –s. Occa’sionally they even
pop up my’steriously in the middle of a word ju’st becau’se there is an –s there.
Wherever you go, you will find examples of apostrophes appearing where they shouldn’t
(and, indeed, not appearing where they should).
If you see any examples of apostrophe misuse on signs like these, take a photo of it and email
it to me at [email protected] to claim a prize.
To keep this simple, I’m going to focus only on possessive apostrophes – that is, apostrophes that show when something belongs to somebody or something. In these instances, we simply
add –’s to the end of the word.
Examples: Mr Gilfeather’s classroom
James’s birthday
Children’s play area
However, there are two exceptions to this rule, and this is where I think the confusion some-
times arises:
For plural words already ending with –s, we do not add another –s after the apostro-phe.
Examples: the girls’ football team
the doctors’ surgery
For possessive personal pronouns, we do not use an apostrophe at all. Examples: yours, his, hers, theirs, its
It’s as simple as that.

Vocalize get 75000 primary school students dancing
Vocalize gave their best performance to date at the MFY
Primary Proms in the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday 10th Octo-
ber! They performed to over 7,500 primary school students from
across London. When they came onto stage for an encore the
roar of the audience was indescribable. There was a standing
ovation with the whole Royal Albert Hall up on their feet
dancing to PYT, Vocalize’s latest hit. Have a look on our
YouTube page to see highlights from the event here: http://

Ex Sedgehill student makes front page
Ex-Sedgehill student makes the Front Page! Ex-Sedgehill student Moses Odubajo scored in Leyton Orient's 2-1 win over MK Dons last weekend, as a result his picture was on the front of the national Football League newspaper on Sunday. The win took Orient to the top of League 1 if they are still there at the end of the season, Moses could well be playing in the Champion-ship next year. Another ex-Sedgehill student Keiron McCann also had a successful weekend of football helping Chatham Town FC in to the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA cup. Keiron McCann, now a personal trainer, played a star role in their win over Horsham FC and a win in the next round against St. Albans City will see them playing in the First Round proper. Moses and Keiron have shown how hard work and Resilience can pay off. Regards Ryan Royston Director of E-Learning & Year 7

Romeo and Juliet
This year Sedgehill School is taking part in the London Shakespeare Schools Festival with its production of Romeo and Juliet at Greenwich Theatre. The performance is a modern interpretation which includes a combined style of naturalistic acting along with physical theatre. This is a fantastic opportunity for students and the school as we will get to showcase part of the production on a London stage with a packed audience of over 350 people. The students will be performing on November the 9th at Greenwich Theatre and we would love to see as many of you there as possible. Tickets are available by calling Greenwich Theatre box office 020 8858 7755. If you can’t make the November performance, opening night of the full production is February 5th 2014 at Sedgehill School Theatre. Miss L Higgins
The rehearsal of Romeo and Juliet has been amazing. The new developments and modernization to the play is something we didn’t realise would be so inspirational. So far with the very few rehearsals we’ve had, it has been very productive and student involvement is exceptional. One of the main things that we would say has been the overall enjoyment so far is the interaction between different year groups. Students from year7 to year 13 are all involved which is astonishing; we are given a chance to create and build new friendships. There is a seamless collaboration between us all that has already shown to result in an exciting piece of theatre. There isn’t any separation between the main characters and the chorus we are all equal and can contribute our own creative ideas regardless of our age. We know that this will be a great experience. Stick challenge
On Friday 11th October I did a team exercise with some of my year group; the purpose of the event was to get to know my year group and to be able to work as a team. We were spilt up into groups of six people . Our task was to build a shelter out of newspaper. It was fun and also my group won an award.
The activity itself was good. We made our shelter by rolling up sheets of newspaper and putting them in this machine which turned them hard. All six of us had to fit in it whether we were standing, laying down or crouching. We had no idea what it would turn out like! I think that my team honestly were really good at this task.
In the end my group’s shelter was a 3D rhombus which was what we had planned . We also won an award for having the most stable shelter. In those two hours I had fun and experienced something new and made some more friends. Tiyen Slater

The new school year for sixth form has got off to an excellent start after achieving some of our best results ever; we are extremely proud to be one of very few sixth forms to achieve 100% A*-E grades at A2 this summer. The continued success of our sixth form students has once again seen every single UCAS applicant from last year attain a place at University, in particular, ex-student Rachel Hallett has gone to Leeds University to study History after achieving AABB in her A level courses, we look forward to hearing about her experiences in her first semester. This September the sixth form has enrolled over 220 new year 12 students who have all made an excellent start to the term. Along with our new intake we have a great new team of student ambassadors, working alongside our existing year 13 team. The sixth form ambassador team now has 40 students all representing different subject areas within the school.
Whilst year 12 settles into their new courses, year 13 students are working hard towards completing their UCAS applications. Already three students have submitted applications to Cambridge University, with two students applying for English and one for mathematics; we wish them the very best of luck with their applications and are eagerly awaiting to hear if they have been selected for interview. In addition to this, there are a great number of students applying for other Russell Group universities who are working hard to complete their applications by the end of this term.
Already a number of trips have taken place with dance students visiting LABAN dance school; exciting plans are in progress for a combined key stage 4 and five trip next term to visit Oxford University.
With our first half term under our belts and a fantastic new cohort of students settled in, we already have our eyes on the future and preparations are well underway for our sixth form open evening on 7th November 2013 where we will be delighted to welcome year 11 students from Sedgehill and other local schools to visit us in action as they begin making their applications for next year.
