Pastor’s Letter

April 27/28

As we move toward the end of the Easter season and the celebrations of the Ascension and Pentecost, we read gospels from John that speak about life without Jesus’ physical presence. The fourth gospel recounts the words Jesus said to his friends and disciples as he prepared to ascend from this earth to God’s presence:

My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

The commandment to love one another is actually not new. The great commandment of love was repeated in prayer every day by every member of the Jewish faith. What is new in the commandment is the idea that love for one another is evidence of the resurrection. The disciples are to bear witness to the resurrection not only or not even mainly by their words. They are called to give witness in very concrete acts of love for one another. This love is the evidence that God is in the world.

In times of tragedy and suffering such as we have seen in Boston and Texas this past week people raise the great questions of faith. How can this happen? Why can this happen? Where is God when this happens? Some seek answers in philosophy, reasons, explanations. Some say that it is all proof that God is not. But beyond all this there is an amazing phenomena that we have now seen over and over. While some stand and question the meaning others move toward the tragedies to do what they can to heal and help. “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another!”

If the measure of discipleship is Jesus’ command to love one another, then there are many more disciples than we think. There are people who don’t know they are disciples or who would never give themselves that name. They witness to the power of love in our world and their actions stand against its suffering and evil. They are the evidence that our God lives.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Living the L

ach Day

The Course:

A series on faith and belief for the modern Catholic By Fr. Mike Vetrano

Monday, May 6 at 7:30 in the church

The Moral Teaching of the Church Since Vatican II

The Second Vatican Council challenged moral theologians and catechists to renew our moral teaching with an emphasis on discipleship, conscience, and responsibility in living the Christian life. This evening will explore the roots of this call, the emphasis of the council, and where the church is going as a moral teacher in this millennium. We will discuss how we teach and are taught about sin, virtue, forgiveness, and responsibility. We will also look at the ways that the church’s own successes and failures have influenced its witness in society.

Mission Appeal Thank You

The Fathers of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans) send their thanks for the encouraging response on the part of the parish to their appeal the weekend of April 13-14, 2013 and for the kind reception given to Reverend Francis Obu-Mends, C.S. Sp., who was here on their behalf.

Be assured of the prayers of the Spiritans worldwide for you, and for your intentions, and of their need for our continued prayers for them and for their ministries to God’s lowly and needy ones everywhere.

Do please continue to keep the missions of the Church in your hearts, the work of the Holy Spirit Fathers in mind, and the never-ending need to proclaim and witness to the Gospel in your own lives.

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2013 © 2012, OCP. All rights reserved

¿Eres Cristiano? (CCE, §1385)

13 Sharing the Gospel

Jesus said, "Love each other as I have loved you." He died on the cross so that your sins and mine might be forgiven. Jesus was human like you and me. He shared his food with friends. He visited and healed the sick. He cried when his friends died. He told stories to help people learn about his Father in heaven. When you show love for others, Jesus smiles because he is very proud of you. Prayer Lord, teach me to love and help others. Something to Draw Draw yourself taking crackers and a bowl of soup to your mother. Mission for the Week I will take three cans of food to the church for the poor.
