Pastor’s Letter

April 13/14

Dear Parish Family,

There is nothing like the first warm day of spring to turn our thoughts to the return of summer! This

year we will have something very special to look forward to: the return of the Sacred Heart End of

Summer Tent Party! I have heard so much about this historic SHJM event and I am delighted that Pat

Corrigan and Joan Heinz have graciously offered to chair the party. This year our party will honor

Mary Steinbrecher, one of the party’s most enthusiastic supporters over many years. Mary passed away

this past fall but not before encouraging all of us to renew this event as a way for the parish and

community to come together and celebrate our wonderful parish and the joys of summer in

Southampton.

Oh yes! Save the date: Saturday Evening August 31, 2013

More information will be coming your way soon, including ways you can help and support this

event.

Along with the renewal of our tent party, our Summer Super Raffle will have a new format this

year. There will be more tickets available for sale and more prizes (not just one) for the winners. My

thanks to Jeanne and Charlie Mottern for leading and planning the raffle. Tickets will go on sale

Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks to all of you who support Sacred Hearts week by week and to all of you who are

encouraging us to build an active parish life. In this Easter season, the time of the resurrection and

sending of the spirit, we come to understand that the church is built up each day by all the things we do

to spread the gospel and bring people together. These wonderful times of celebration are surely part of

the celebration of Easter.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

The Women and The Stone

We were worried about the stone from the beginning. We saw how Joseph, Nicodemus, and the others strained every muscle setting it in place how flushed they were of face. That final thud had echoed in our bones. We women know of stones: the stone in the heart, in the breast, in the brain: the stone in the throat, in the arms and the womb. All of these stones are the stone of His tomb as the weight of all sorrow, all pain and all loss is the weight of His body hung on the cross. Oh, who'll come to move it, to lift it, to take it away so we may go in to see Him again! The morning stars were shining when we left our lodgings and hurried through the darkness in the streets uneasy, lest we wake unfriendly sleepers. Suppose they open shutters, Shout –

"What are those women doing at this hour?" suspect our destination, send word up to the priests that we were out to steal the body of the Lord away? We'd pounded spices in the mortars half the night

so we might reach the tomb by break of day . . . so, miserable and frightened, we kept on. We would not, could not, stay away, or hide -- as some thought wise. Safely, we reached the Eastern Gate just as the light, (still soft and gray), touched Golgotha and seemed to smooth, like love, the scars away. We paused as, in a dream we'd waken from to find it all untrue. But we had work to do. Off to the West the morning stars were dying. Birds sang: trees were radiant with rose-gold tongues of light. Then on the garden path a moan escaped us what about the stone? "Who'll roll away the stone for us?" we cried. To come so far, And then to be denied? We did not comprehend at first the great stone set aside, the grave cloths folded neatly and left inside. Here was a mystery -- and we were full of questions, full of dread. "Seek Him among the living," said the angel, "not the dead!" You know the story's ending written down by friends (Matthew and Mark, Luke, the beloved John . . . ) the wonder never ends: the mystery goes on . . .

Reverend Francis Obu-Mends, C.S. Sp., of the Fathers of the

Holy Spirit will visit this weekend.

Father Francis will speak at the Masses about the Missionary work of the Church and in particular that of the Fathers of the Holy Spirit (“The Spiritans”), earlier known as the Holy Ghost Fathers.

This visit is part of a national program whereby annually a representative of one of the missionary groups visits the parishes of the Diocese to enlist support for the mission work of the Church. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit is an international community engaged in a wide range of missionary activity in many areas of the world. Fr. Francis is himself from Ghana. He has pastoral and seminary formation experience and is now completing graduate studies in New York after which he will return to teaching at the Spiritan University College Seminary in Ejisu, Ashanti Region.

When Jesus said, “You shall witness to me in Jerusalem and in Samaria and to the ends of the earth”, He made the spread of the Gospel an essential part of our Catholic Life.

l 2013 Catholic Ministries Appeal

Our Lord is grateful to those who sacrifice in His name to build the Kingdom of God.

No gift is too small when it is offered with love to serve others.

We Provide the Roof Over Their Head – They Make it Their Home “If it wasn’t for Catholic Charities, I would probably be in a nursing home,” a resident of Catholic Charities Mary’s Manor confessed. “I wouldn’t have independence. I would have signed myself into a nursing home when I got this lung condition.” Instead, she goes to Bingo twice a week, the beach during the summer, is part of a crocheting club, and helps serve the meals for other residents at Mary’s Manor.

“Without this, what would I do? I can’t run around now. I really love it here,” the resident confessed.

On Long Island, it can be difficult for seniors to find affordable housing. About 30 years ago, Catholic Charities took on that mission and opened 16 housing sites, with 13,000 residents. Mary’s Manor is the second oldest com-munity of housing maintained by Catholic Charities and supported with help from the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

¿A cuáles ovejas has dado de comer hoy?
