Gallup Figures Show UK RecordSales In Continued DeclinePreliminary figures by chart com-piler Gallup of UK record salesover the second quarter of 1992reflect a 9% decrease in singlessales, compared against the sameperiod of 1991. Albums dipped4%, though this could be seen asan improvement from the 8%decline during the first quarter of1992.

Gallup charts diredior JohnPinder claims the results under-score the current economic situa-tion in Europe, and says thedecline was expected. Says Pin -der, "When considering the lengthof the recession we are in, thesefigures pretty much line up withsimilar retail sectors."

FRANCE

Although singles suffered a

sharp drop, Pinder remains opti-mistic of their future. "In the UK,the cassette market is actuallystill holding up. At the retaillevel, cassette and CD singles aremarking their place. Singles as acarrier have declined, but the CDsingle, especially, had a reallyhealthy growth. So there are somebright sides to this."

The Gallup figures show theCD and cassette single rising78% and 18%, respectively, com-pared to the same period last year. The 7" and 12" single fell 43%and 25%, respectively. Full salesstatistics are expected to beissued later this month. MHW

WEA Music Boosts National Artist Rosterby Emmanuel Legrand

WEA Music, one of the twoWarner Music companies inFrance, is putting more emphasison its local roster in order toincrease both its market share andits revenues on the French mar-ket. The man behind this newstrategy is Philippe Laco, whobecame general manager of WEAMusic a year ago.

This strategy marks a dramaticturnaround from the company'spolicy the previous five yearswhen development of the labelwas mostly based on internationalcatalogue and the national rosterwas confined to a couple of majoracts.

As a result, WEA Music hasnot only renegotiated the con-tracts of some top acts in a year'stime, but has also attracted bignames and has started to developnew acts.

Laco previously held variouspositions within PolyGram, including GM of PolyGramMusic Video. Laco, who washired by former. president ofWarner Music France LuigiCalabrese and reports to thenewly appointed president Marco

Bignotti, says this change of poli-cy has been fully approved by thecompany's international branchand is one of his "main missions"in an effort to boost the compa-ny's revenues, which reachedFfr600 million (app. US$115 mil-lion) in 1991.

As part of the new policy, twoof the most important acts inWEA's history, MichelBerger and FranceGall, have renewedtheir association 'withthe company. The cou-ple's first jointly record-ed album Double Jeuwas released in lateMay. Backed by a

Ffr2.5 million market-ing campaign, thealbum has already soldmore than 150.000copies.

Newly signed to WEA is vet-eran singer Charles Trenet, thelast of France's "legends" andcomposer of La Mer (The Sea).Trenet, 79, is expected to delivera brand new album of unreleasedmaterial in October for his 80thbirthday.

Among newcomers, WEAscored a hit with Dany Brillant,

Philippe Laco

whose rockabilly song Suzettefound its way in the charts andwhose first album has sold 90.000units so far. Other new actsincluded funk band Malka Fami-ly, "chanteuse" Helena Nogu-erra, singer Frank Echegut, bands Tetes Raides, Central Sudand Livity, as well as humouristsLafesse and Daniel Prevost.

In addition, WEAveteran VeroniqueSanson just delivereda new album that isdoing extremely wellcompared to her previ-ous albums, andMichel Jonasz, one ofFrance's most celebrat-ed but not very prolificacts, is due to release anew album thisautumn.

Says Laco, "Previ-ously, the company's split of rev-enues between international andnational catalogues was 85/15. Iwant this share to 70/30 by theend of this year, and to 60/40 nextyear. We have the chance to havean extremely strong internationalcatalogue, and we are going to doeverything possible to develop itin France. But, we cannot achieve

internal and market growth with-out good results with local artists. My mission is to develop thecompany's activities, and it goeshand in hand with the develop-ment of a local catalogue, with allthe means necessary."

Since the split of cataloguesbetween Carrere Music andWEA Music, WEA handles themarketing and promotion of theWarner/Reprise, Elektra andSire labels, while Carrere hasbeen granted Atlantic and EastWest.

Laco says that the re-signingof Gall and Berger was of greatimportance to the company. "Itwas a way to tell the industry andthe media that there is a sense ofcontinuity here: that not only arewe committed in developing newtalents, but also to retain ourartists." Laco is now directly han-dling A&R decisions, aided bytwo A&R managers, VincentFrerebeau and Daniel Betan.

Comments Laco, "We arelooking for creative acts withstrong personalities and goodstage skills. My feeling is thatover the past years, record com-panies have been recycling toomuch old material and not invest-

ing enough to renew talent."Adds Laco, "Record compa-

nies should be more and morecreative and not hesitate to findniches. It seems to me that thepublic wants to hear differentthings. But radio stations arerather reluctant to play differentmusic. They should take a look atthe US situation where there is anincreasing interest for larger for-mats."

Laco explains the implementa-tion of the new policy, saying,"My first task when I arrived wasto focus on the problems we hadwith the sales unit; to restructurethe international department sothat it would remain our drivingforce, and invest in new men andartists.

"The second step is to sharpenall this, especially the ways todevelop our new acts. This meansthat we have to be very attentiveto all the promotional outlets thatoffer an alternative.

"For example, I am eager toexpand the number of radio sta-tions we are working with. It hasalready started, as we have hiredsomeone whose task is to workwith specialized outlets."

New Telecom Minister Pagani FacesRadio/TV Licence Deadline Pressures

by David Stansfield

The recent appointment of socialdemocrat Maurizio Pagani as newminister of post and telecommuni-cations has done little to reassurethe private radio sector that Broad-cast legislation first approved inAugust 1990 will, at long last, beput into practice.

Pagani has taken over from fel-low social democrat CarloVizzini, who despite numerouspromises, failed to even deliver hislist of broadcast licence winners inthe privileged TV sector. Paganihas little time to comply with theoriginal broadcast legislation, which stated that licences must begranted to successful candidates in

both the radio and TV sectors byAugust 23 this year. This lack ofaction may result in defiance bynational broadcasters in the radiosector against regulations whichstate that they must give up localadvertising by that date.

Sergio Natucci, secretary ofthe private national networks asso-ciation RNO, points out that bothPagani and Vizzini belong to thesame political party and reportsrumours that staff at the ministerialoffice will remain unchanged. Heis not confident of any quick gov-ernment action and comments,"RNO sent a warning to Vizzini torespect the August 23 deadline. We will now send notice toPagani. If laws are not appliedsoon, the radio sector will die."

Natucci also states that iflicences are not issued by theAugust 23 deadline it will beimpossible for national stations togive up local advertising. "It cur-rently helps the national privateradio sector to survive," he says."Certain stations prefer nationaladvertising only, but it's notenough. at the moment. Govern-ment ministers who have donenothing to apply legislation overthe past two years can't expect sta-tions to give up an importantsource of revenue just like that."

For the first time in many years, church -owned private networkCOPE has gone into the red. Asreported in the general stockhold-er's meeting last June 30, totallosses for the year 1991 amount toPta469 million (app. US$4.69 mil-lion), a sharp contrast to the profitsannounced the previous year ofUS$12 million. The network madeoperating losses of US$530.000

against a positive cash flow OfUS$4.3 million. Although COPEdeclined to reveal its revenues, other sources place them at US$177 million.

"BRTN's Radio 2 is still Han-der's major radio station," saysVariety MD Marc Klein, "butsince Donna started I think it iscloser to the audience we aim at,with acts like Joe Cocker, RingoStarr and Wet Wet Wet. StudioBrussel is, in my opinion, too spe-cialized, and Donna already has abigger share of the market thanStudio Brussel."

Radio Donna is based on the sta-

tion's commitment to the festivaland its plans to build the festivaltogether with the organizers. "Thisgoes back to what sponsorshipreally is," he says. Radio Donnawill serve as the media sponser forthe Flanders area and will have itslogos printed on the billboards.

However, Klein is extremelyhappy about Radio 21's support tothe beach event and emphasizesthe good working relationshipwith station manager ClaudeDelacroix. This year, MTVEurope will also back up the festi-val with trailers and reports fromthe site. "I think that Belgium with100% cable penetration is becom-ing more and more important forMTV," adds Klein.

Another case where carefulprofile -building has payed off isthe Sfinks festival in Antwerp(July 24-26), where the BRTN'sRadio 1 is playing an instrumentalrole in promoting the concert.

Says Radio 1 producer ZjakiWillems, "We announce the festi-val in our programmes and willrecord most of the artists forbroadcast purposes. It is interest-

conclud-ed co -production deals with the

Danish, Norwegian and Finnishstate broadcasters to air materialfrom the festival. Afropop World-wide will distribute recordings ofthe festival to national public radioin the US and the BBC."

Says Sfinks festival organizerPatrick Degroote, "Radio I is theBRTN's only channel to attachimportance to the music we haveon the bill. With acts like the Mys-tere Des Voix Bulgares, LintonKwesi Johnson, Marisa Monteand Los Reyes we certainly aim ata specific audience. The clear pro-file of the BRTN's channels unde-niably plays a strong role in target -ling our promotion."

For the Michael Jackson con-cert at the Werchter festival -site(July 22), it was advertising agen-cy VVL-BBDO which plannedthe media campaign.

Says VVL-BBDO accountsdirector Carola Michiels, "InFlanders we negotiated with Stu-dio Brussel at first, but we didn'tsucceed in making a barter dealwith them. So, we made a dealwith the 22 Flemish former RadioContact stations to promote the

Making The Most Of Your Newsby Valerie Geller

Having just spent several weeksin Europe working with news andfeature producers at radio stationsin both Germany and Sweden, Inoticed a few common areaswhere European broadcastersmight be able to improve on theirnews product.

Please bear in mind that theideas that follow come from a USstandpoint of commercial radio. However, if some of these ideasapply and can possibly be of useto your station, you might consid-er trying them the same way youwould make an American recipe, but using the European ingredi-ents.

First, the news should not beboring! The news should be asmuch a tune -in factor to the audi-ence as the music and the otherelements on the radio station.Great care should be taken toinsure that the writing is strong, the stories are of interest to thelisteners, and the approach isrelatable.

Story SelectionYour story selection is vital.

The taped interview statementsinside the news should be short, interesting and to the point. Manyreporters and interviewers aretempted to let boring officialspokesmen go on and on, even ifit's dull, becuase they feel theaudience ought to be hearing it.But if it's not compelling, theaudience has already flipped thedial!

One way to ensure more inter-esting statements is for the inter-viewer to ask the questions theyknow the audience want to hear, instead of those lofty intellectualquestions that no one reallyunderstands the answers to. Thesame is true of the writing. Writeto express. not to impress.

Story Rotation

As with the records, the hotnews stories ought to be rotated. Ican't tell you how many Europeanstations I listened to where the

new at 17:00 was the exact samenews, word for word-includingthe same writing and the sametape inside the stories-as that at16:00! The news should be new.

News presenters and produc-ers can rewrite stories and savebits of interview tape for use inlater newscasts. I guarantee youthat the listeners will appreciateit. When they tune in and hear thesame news, they generally tuneright out because they've heard itbefore. However, if the same"hot" stories are on the air butrewritten and repackaged in afresh and creative way, the listen-ers will want to hear them.

Topic Selection

A few years ago, Americanresearch company Frank Magid& Associates did a survey to findout what subjects people wereinterested in hearing about. Theycame up with three main areas:health, heart (emotional issues)and pocketbook.

As commercial radio in

Europe becomes more and morecompetitive, giving the listenerswhat they want to hear aboutbecomes very important to keep-ing and building those in youraudience.

In the US, several years agowhen former president Reaganderegulated the news committ-ment for broadcasters, radio sta-tions found that the audience stillwanted their news and informa-tion. So even though it's nolonger required to have a certainamount of news broadcasts on theair, the top stations in the US thatare in the top 25 markets are usu-ally all -news stations or news/talkstations.

This is no accident. The newsis tightly written, and the storiesare creatively done and to thepoint. It's not unusual to hear theuse of interesting natural soundbehind the stories as well. Radiois theatre of the mind. You shouldbe able to close your eyes duringa live report from the scene of anews event and feel that you arethere.

Political Climate Clouds Lyra Conferenceby Machgiel Bakker

Amid a rapidly changing political envi-ronment, the Bratislayska Lyra con-vention was held in the Slovak capital ofBratislava from June 12-14. Drawing anestimated 700 music and media repre-sentatives from the eastern Europeanregion, the conference featured videoand talent competitions as well as con-certs from Boy George, Saga and a hostof national talents.

Organized by the Pop, Rock & JazzAgency, the event's main businessopportunities were concentrated withinthe city's Istropolis exhibition hall. Over20 companies were represented thereincluding record companies from theSlovak and Czech region such asPopron Music, Monitor, Supraphon,

ITS A WESTERNHAGEN WINNER -Warner Music Germany devised a spe-cial competition for dealers to tie in withthe release of Westemhagen's album "JaJa," which has topped the charts for 15weeks now. Passers-by had to guess whowas behind a black -draped shop windowand sent in their answers by postcard.Ten winners were selected from a mail-

bag, each of which will receive a SonyWatchman, Discman or Walkman.Pictured dipping into the bag are (k):WEA sales secretary Silke Ahrens andsales promotion manager Arno Walter.

Opus, Tommii Records and Musica. Also present were the Hungarian firm

Rfikoczi Records, Austrian trade maga-zine Tschin Bumm (which also publisheseditions in Hungarian and Czech) and adelegation of Popkomm, Germany's popmusic- fair. Radio attendance includedRock FM Radio/Bratislava and BontonRadio/Prague.

The Lyra is subsidized 40% by thestate; the rest comes from sponsorsincluding telephone company Euroteland art organisation Slovart. Started in1966 as a song contest, the Lyra expand-ed into a music convention in 1991 withthe aim of becoming a MIDEM of theEast.

However, reaching that goal will takeboth time and some restructuring, as theconference hall was mainly used to dis-play product (both vinyl and CD) anddid not reflect a direct business atmo-sphere.

According to Pop, Rock & JazzAgency MD Pavel Danek, the presentpolitical uncertainty has troubled theLyra. "This country is going throughrapid changes and the music market hereis very fragmented. Our task is to helpbuild the market and to provide a meet-ing place for the various industries."

Nora Fuchs, editor of the Czech edi-tion of Tschin Bumm and co -organiser of

the Lyra, observes that a key problem isthe national lack of marketing knowl-edge. "You can't expect the people hereto think along the same lines as in theWest. The market is still in its infancyand concepts like marketing or advertis-ing are underdeveloped. Along withinfrastructural problems, finding goodpeople is the biggest diffiquIty. But I amsatisfied that I can at least reach every-body at one place-there are alreadycommunication problems enough."

Subsidized by the ministry ofNorthrhine Westphalia (this year's cul-tural partner to Czechoslovakia),Popkomm MD Dieter Gorny organiseda small German delegation to visit theconvention. Gorny maintains, "If theeastern European people can't come toPopkomm to meet the West, we come tothem. But if the Lyra wants to becomethe place where East meets West, thenwe have to find our own ways-whichare not necessarily in accordance withthe organisers of the Lyra-to make ithappen, because this just doesn't work. There's a lack of dialogue; panels androundtable discussions are essential toimprove the communication problemsfacing this market."

Radio Vienna Splits In Twoby Norman Weichselbaum

Radio Vienna, one of nine local ORFprogrammes on channel 02, is dividinginto two separate programmes, RadioVienna and Radio MegaHertz.

Station MD Gerhard Weiss stated ata press conference that Radio Viennawill be on the air 15 hours a. day from5.00 to 20.00. Although the station willkeep its EHR/schlager format, it willconcentrate on information and cultureaspects. Says Weiss, "We want to bevery close with the problems and inter-ests of the man in the street. From thisconcept we will have a lot of live reports

and service matters on the programme, mixed with mainstream pop and schlagerfor an audience of all ages."

The new programme, RadioMegaHertz, will continues on RadioVienna's frequencies between 20.00 tomidnight. Its format is EHR/rock for lis-teners 20-50 years of age. Each hour willhave its own priority: current affairs, pop history, pop today or dancefloormusic. Both programmes will be receiv-able in Vienna, Niederosterreich andBurgenland. A trial period has alreadybegun for the two programmes, with theofficial launch planned for October1992.

in the Czech market to warrant a goodconvention. But, he says, "That's notreflected here. I have the feeling theorganization is not in touch with reality.Guns N' Roses have played in Prague,Sony has an office in Prague, and there'sRadio CD International and RTLPrague. Why aren't these people here?"

Reflecting on the region's economicand political concerns, Danek predicted,"It will take a long time before the peoplehere will show a real interest and startusing the Lyra for what it is intended."

RAINHARD FENDRICHI Am From Austria - Ariola

PRODUCER: Tato Gomez

Recorded live during the recent week ofpublic holidays in his hometown Vienna, this album shows that Fendrich is at thetop of his possibilities. It's about timethat the rest of Europe spots his talent.Wie Tag Und Nacht is top -class German -language pop that has the same potentialto break out of its local territory as themusic by Frenchman Patrick Bruel did.

THE JEREMY DAYSSpeakeasy- Polydor

PRODUCER: Fred Maher

The name of producer Maher-renowned for his work with Lou Reed-is a guarantee for top quality. Thisprogressive pop band should have a"Cure -appeal" on EHR programmers.Loved is the perfect option for those whowant to inject their playlists with asincere pop song.

OIL ON CANVASHome - Our Choice/Rough Trade

PRODUCER: Toni Gassen/Oil On Canvas

This delightful album listens like anunexpected "part II" of The The'sInfected, but less industrial and moredown to earth. It's the normal line-up ofdrums and wires. Melodies are the linkbetween those crucial instruments.Alalala is a potential Euro novelty hit.

RINGSGWANDLVogelwild - Tri kont/Virg in

PRODUCER: Evert van der Wal/Georg Ringsgwandl

This interesting concept album is basedon a true story about a friend ofRingsgwandl who was killed on duty andwhose case belongs to the 0,5% unsolved

murders in Germany. The set varies fromcountry to jazz, funk, humpa humpa andcabaret influences. Above all it's atypical exponent of German art.

ZYON

Zyon WEA

PRODUCER: A.C. Boutsen/Stevie Be-Zet/R. Hildenbeutel

There's an ambient feel to this danceproject. The mysterious raps are put infront of a Tubular Bells -like musicaldecor. The outcome is rather surrealistic. The instrumental parts could be used forsoundtrack purposes, TV or radiodocumentaries.

Hands On The WheelThe "front cover dobro" pops up again.Having decorated the sleeve of theclassic Dire Straits album Brothers InArms and the cult masterpiece LivingWith The Law by Chris Whitley, theguitar with the metal body is now usedon the artwork of German band HandsOn The Wheel.

The strong image points promptly inthe direction of roots rock. The music ofthis promising quintet is,of course, dominated bythe sound of the preciousstring instrument, playedby mainstay TomRipphahn. Another strongpoint is his gravelly voicewhich is not unlike BobSeger and his impeccable English-theresult of an Australian upbringing.

The self -titled debut album onElectrola is a very pleasing set of rock inthe best blue collar tradition. It has the"human touch" that is so often lacking inthese modern times. Listen to thebeautiful love ballad Emilie and you'llknow what we mean. Restless Heartevokes images of lonesome hobos in theold west travelling on endless dustyroads from town to town. The first singleRescue Me is the kind of rocker that willeasily fit a multitude of formats, as willthe tracks Gotta Get Away and BrokenGlass.

POP

Electrola product managerAlexandra Dorrie is working on one ofthe weirdest campaigns so far this year. She called in the help of a flowerdelivery service. "In mid June a cactuswas delivered to radio stations with thesingle attached to it. One week later wesent out a special package containing awatering can, because strictly followingthe song title the plant had to be

'rescued.' The gimmickpaid off, because withouteven asking for airplay wealready received six plays, which is quite somethingfor a band that still has tobe established."

After that the musicwas serviced to retail. A promo box withpoint -of -sale material, such as mobilesand 12" sleeves, was sent out to theshops. The in-store campaign is titled"Horig," German for both "addicted" and"nice to listen to."

In the beginning of July, Electrola hasorganized five barbecue parties acrossGermany, covering Hamburg, Cologne,Munich, Berlin and the band's hometownFrankfurt. Each time 150 guests-media,people and retailers-were invited, whilethe band treated them with an acousticset. On August 21 they will perform liveat PopKomm in the Luxor venue inCologne Robbert Tilli

MARKETING THE MUSIC

Provogue's Got The BluesOne of the instigators of the current"blues boom" [see M&M, February 15] isthe Rotterdam -based Provogue label. Onits roster you can find such illustriousnames as Texan band Omar & TheHowlers, Australian bluesman Dave Holeand, last but not least, the Walter TroutBand from the US, a regular chartbusterin Holland and Scandinavia.

Provogue, founded in 1989 by Janvan der Linden -formerly employed byRoadrunner and Holland's biggestimporter/exporter Bertus Distributie-debuted on the blues market with Omar's1990 album Monkeyland, out in the US onAustin label Antone's. The first chart suc-cess, however, came with Trout's albumLife In The Jungle that same year. TheAmerican guitarist became the flagship ofthe company. On June 28 the guitar herotopped the bill of Europe's biggest freeopen air festival, "Parkpop" in the Hague,Holland (500.000 spectators).

In its pioneering days in blues,Provogue licensed its releases from for-eign companies, but is now launching itsown productions. Original repertoireowner for Trout was the now defunctDanish Electra label. For the self -financed follow-up album Prisoner Of ADream (1991) Provogue had the world-wide rights for the first time, whereas theEuropean rights are secured for all otherproductions.

The upcoming third Trout album

Transition, scheduled for an earlySeptember release, marks the company'sbiggest investment so far: Dfl.100.000(app. US$60.000). The album is recordedin L.A. under supervision of Americanproducer Kevin Bemish (of Reo Speed -wagon fame).

"Provogue's policy is to find a certainkind of music that has the potential tocross over to rock audiences or evenmetal," " explains promotion/marketingmanager Ron Euser. "Our artists areoften interviewed by specialized hardrock magazines. Like Gary Moore, theyalso draw bikers in Metallica T-shirts.You won't see those people at RonnieEarl gigs. If we feel that such a crossoveris impossible, we don't release the album. Our aim is to sell at least 5.000 copies pertitle across Europe."

Provogue managed to get the newsigning Dave Hole on the bill as supportact of Gary Moore on his lengthy Euro-pean tour. The second leg of this tourstarts September 5 and will end exactlyone month later in the prestigious RoyalAlbert Hall in London.

At the moment, Omar & the Howlersare touring Europe, promoting their -LiveIn Paradiso album, recorded last year.Their current single is the CreedenceClearwater Revival track Born On TheBayou, coupled with three acoustic bonustracks, outtakes of Omar's solo albumBluesbag. Robbert Tilli

year of BMG Ariola Media, which specializes in media -adver-tised products, folk music, andGerman -language entertainment -based music recordings. Headedby Albert Czapski, the divisionhad a turnover of DM180 million, making it the leader in that seg-ment in the G/S/A. The divisionmarkets and distributes the prod-uct from German label partnerssuch as Jupiter, White Records,Global, Coconut and Hansa.Successful artists on the rosterinclude David Hasselhoff, Bon-nie Tyler, Nicole and DieterBohlen among others.

BMG Ariola Munich has alsoincreased its profile, buying astake in the newly founded heavymetal label Great UnlimitedNoises (GUN) and music pub-lishing house DRAKKAR Pro-motion. And, since July 1, it iscooperating with Peter Maffay'sTutzing-based Red Rooster label.Another collaboration is in theworks with George Gliick'sIntro label.

Comments Stein, "The objec-tive of these joint ventures was to

offer help and support on theadministrative and financial sideto small individual creative units, without touching their artisticindependence. In any case, it is

intended to realize a particularindividualized cooperation inaccordance with the structure ofeach label."

The Munich operation had anestimated turnover of DM296million, generated by sales frominternational artists like LisaStansfield, Curtis Stigers, U2and Melissa Etheridge, as wellas local talent such as KarlKeaton and Marianne Rosen-berg.

Top priorities for the comingyear, says BMG Ariola, is to con-tinue to improve the developmentof national products. In Septem-ber, the Ariola companies willrelease about 70 titles on DCC.

The results of operations fromother companies are:

BMG Ariola Hamburg(RCA, MCA, Geffen) had aturnover of DM112 million, anincrease of 15%, mainly due toalbums by Annie Lennox, Nir-vana and Guns N' Roses.

BMG Ariola Austria salesincreased 8% to DM52 million,

making it the market leader inthat country. Austrian superstarReinhard Fendrich, David Has-selhof and U2 were the best-sellers.

BMG Ariola Switzerlandreached the DM60 million mark,an increase of 15%. For the firsttime after restructuring the mar-keting and promotion depart-ments, it has enjoyed great suc-cess with national product. Thedebut album by Swiss hard rockact Gotthard-a co -productionwith BMG Ariola Munich-wasnumber 1 in the local charts.

BMG Ariola Miller (Ario-la Express and Europa Video),which represents the company'sbudget -priced operations, had aturnover of DM100 million onlytwo years after its launch.

In the new "Bundeslander,"turnover was 7% of BMG AriolaGermany total sales. The compa-ny says a little more than 50% ofsales were attributable to low -price products, with German -lan-guage repertoire and schlagerbeing more popular than rock orinternational pop, which sells bet-ter in the West.

Toofunky Tops EHRGeorge Michael scores his second number I on the EHR Top 40 chart thisweek as Toofunky is overtaking the four -week chart topper. Elton John'sThe One. At the beginning of last year. Michael occupied the top positionfor three consecutive weeks with Freedom.

Although Michael's total number of reporting stations is less thanthat of John's (99 versus 104), Toofunky has collected more cumulativechart points as a result of its higher penetration on platinum stations. Inmarkets like Belgium, Norway, Denmark and Switzerland, airplaylevels have reached 100%, while UK, France, Germany, Sweden andItaly are all above the 75% mark.

As predicted last week, the new Madonna single This Used To BeMy Playground is showing major action on EHR. Debuting at 16 lastweek, it has shot to number 5 with 38 new additions under its belt, thehighest ever, together with Michael Jackson's Black Or White. Alreadylast week, the single earned 31 adds. Although airplay levels are veryimpressive across the board, there is room for growth in markets such asFrance, Germany and Scandinavia (Norway excluded).

Highest entry for Roxette's new single How Do You Do. taken fromthe forthcoming Tourism album due for August 31. Airplay is best inItaly and Scandinavia. It marks the duo's sixth single on EHR, makingthem the second -most productive act on EHR, together with the PetShop Boys. Kylie Minogue has managed to score seven times on EHR,although none of her singles were as successful.

Second highest entry for INXS's Heaven Sent, the fourth single fromthe Australian band to make an impact on EHR. following BitterTears, By My Side and Disappear. First airplay is reported in Holland,Italy and the UK. Machgiel
