Amanda Gilmore. She will be a junior at DeLeon High School.Her activities include, National Honor Society, One Act Play,Student Council, FCA, basketball, and volleyball. Sophie hopes toattend Baylor University and one day become a Speech Therapist.She is sponsored by ESA Sorority.

Jaycee BurrowJaycee Burrow is the 15-year-old daughter of Brandon and

Patti Burrow. She is the granddaughter of Pat Loudermilk and thelate Franklin Loudermilk and Loys Morrison. She is a sophomoreat DeLeon High School. Jaycee is an active member of theDeLeon church of Christ. She was awarded the honor ofFreshman of the Year by the DeLeon Chamber of Commerce andAgriculture and DHS for the 2015-2016 school year as well asvoted Fish of the Year by the student body. She is a member of theDHS Student Council and was a Freshman class officer. She isproud to be a Lady Cat and participates in volleyball and softball.She was awarded Second Team All-District honors in softball.She also participates in UIL Oral reading and is a member of theDHS Band. Jaycee is honored to be representing the DeLeonChamber of Commerce and Agriculture.

Ireland HuggIreland Hugg is the 17-year-old daughter of Brandon Hugg.

She is the granddaughter of Kathryn Hugg. Ireland will be a sen-ior at DeLeon High School in the fall. She participates in volley-ball, cheerleading, track, cross country, and other school activities.Ireland likes spending time with her dad and young sister. She is amember of the National Honor Society and One Act Play. She hasbeen honored with District, Bi-District, Area and Regional athlet-ic awards. She is a two time regional qualifier in cross country andan area qualifier in high jump. Ireland plans on attending collegeto become a registered nurse and later on wishes to travel theworld. She is sponsored by the Lion’s Club.

Bailey WhiteleyBailey Whiteley is the 17-year-old daughter of Justin and

D’Anne Whiteley and the granddaughter of David and DebbieGilder. She has three brothers, Blaine 23, Bryce 16, and Baylor 8.Bailey is a senior at DeLeon High School and plays four sports,volleyball, basketball, softball, and track. Her hobbies includegoing to church, reading, cooking, and spending time with family.Bailey has also been in the DeLeon Mighty Maroon Band goingon four years and enjoys playing on the cadence line. She alsodoes many activities in FFA and has been an officer for three years.After high school, she plans on attending Tarleton State University.She is sponsored by the DeLeon Study Club.

Shandon JohnsonShandon Johnson is the 17-year-old daughter of Jackson

Johnson and Heather Waddle and will be a senior at DeLeon HighSchool. She is sponsored by Clark Tractor and Supply of De Leon.Shandon is currently serving her second term as drum major of theMighty Maroon band, serves on the student council, and was FallFestival representative for her class. She participated in FFA fortwo years and played basketball and softball her freshman year.

Shandon has been a member of 4-H Club for 10 years.Outstanding accomplishments have been receiving a trip toWashington D.C. as a result of her 1st place state 4-H record book.While in Washington D.C. she was honored to participate in lay-ing the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and at thetomb of George and Martha Washington, and met withCongressman Mike Conaway. She also was selected to attendNational 4-H Congress held in Atlanta, Georgia where she servedas an agricultural and music teacher for underprivileged children.She participated in 4-H Day at the State Capitol and met withRepresentative J.D. Sheffield. Shandon has advanced to the state4-H competitions in Food Show, Food Challenge, Photography,Natural Fiber Cotton Contest, and A&R Natural Resources. Shehas participated in livestock shows, including Fort WorthLivestock Show with her Southdown sheep for nine years.Shandon is currently president of the DeLeon 4-H Club and theCounty 4-H Council. She has received each of the highest 4-Hawards in the county, including the most recent Gold Star Awardand the top Citizenship and Leadership awards. Shandon has beenselected to travel to Australia and New Zealand for theInternational 4-H Global Experience next July.

Shandon’s hobbies and interests are playing musical instru-ments, fishing, hunting, swimming, riding horses and ATV’s,water sports, working on the farm, and helping others. Futureplans are to attend Tarleton State University and pursue a degreein nursing with a minor in music.

J’Lee Rachel CooperJ’Lee Rachel Cooper is the 5-year-old daughter of Joe and

Lisa Cooper. Her grandparents are James and Karen Whiteheadand Alan and Terry Morris. She is also the granddaughter of thelate Paul and Doris Cooper and the great-granddaughter of FrankieMorris. J’Lee enjoys riding her horses, making art projects, mod-eling for Stockmans, and watching her brother and cousins playsports. She loves Jesus and enjoys attending Sunday School andMission Friends. J’Lee is an avid animal lover and hopes tobecome a dog trainer.

Savannah Wyli DycusSavannah Dycus is the daughter of Rick and Victoria Dycus,

and the granddaughter of Walter and the late Becky McCurry,Ricky and Patty Dycus and Terri and Cary Campbell. She will bea kindergartener at DeLeon Elementary this year. She enjoys col-oring, singing, and loves to ride her little horse. She would love torepresent DeLeon and have fun, and wear a “princess dress.”

Kendyl Brooke BurkeenKendyl Brooke Burkeen is the daughter of Brandon and Jonie

Burkeen. Her grandparents are Maxine and John Owen, Mike andPatsy Burkeen, Randall and Gina McLearen, Lisa and RobertJohnson and great-grandmother, Linda Curry. She will be a kinder-gartener at DeLeon Elementary this year. She loves playing soft-ball with her friend Lexi and likes to play baby dolls with herfavorite baby sister, Karsyn and her cousin, Chelsi. She also lovesto catch fireflys with her big brothers, Brayden and Bryce. Shewould love to become Little Miss DeLeon to wear pretty dressesand be on stage. Kendyl really wants to ride on the watermelonfloat, because watermelon is her favorite food.

Kalissa EstradaKalissa Estrada is the daughter of Carressa Estrada and Matt

Estrada. She will be a kindergartener at DeLeon Elementary thisyear. She is the granddaughter of Beto Gomez and the late AnitaGomez, Marie Rangel, and Charles Kelley. She enjoys spendingtime with friends, loves to color, swim, and playing with her newanimals. Kalissa would love to be Little Miss DeLeon so she canbe a “princess.”

Eden JobeEden Jobe is the daughter of Jackson and Terra Jobe and the

granddaughter of Randy and Paula Barnes, Wayland and PennyFronterhouse and the great-granddaughter of Nadine Kea. Shewill be a kindergartener at DeLeon Elementary this year. Sheenjoys playing and swimming at Grandmom and Granddads, tum-bling, playing softball, and riding bikes. Eden would love to beLittle Miss DeLeon so she can dress up, wear high heels, and ridea float in lots of parades.

Anyssa Klaire LewisAnyssa Klaire Lewis is the 5-year-old daughter of Gerald and

Shanna Lewis and the granddaughter of Clifford and GalynaHolland, plus Harold and the late Betty Lewis. Anyssa will be akindergartener at DeLeon Elementary this year. Anyssa enjoysballet, spending time with her cousins and sister Madilyn, beingoutdoors, picking flowers, helping her dad with watermelons andpumpkins, learning about family history through old photos, creat-ing craft projects, going to the library, and dreaming about thebeach. Anyssa wants to be Little Miss DeLeon so she can meetnew people, share about her community and it’s people and herlove for eating watermelon. As a little girl who loves sparkle,fancy dressing and smilling, it would be an honor for many rea-sons to represent her town.

Attend the DeLeon Peachand Melon Festival StreetParade Wednesday night at 7p.m.

Get there a little early, andmake your way to Farmers andMerchants Bank on Hwy. 16.Beginning at 5:30 p.m. and last-ing until the start of the parade,the bank will be serving peachice cream to the community.

One of the longest runningparades in small-town Texas,the DeLeon Peach and MelonFestival Parade includes a leadoff by this year’s GrandMarshal John Ulstrom.

Keeping with the theme of“Thank You for your Service”Ulstrom was selected to leadthe parade for his decades-longhonorable service in the U.S.Navy.

Joining Ulstrom in theparade will be fellow publicservants from the DeLeonPolice Department and theDeLeon Volunteer FireDepartment, along with numer-ous other area law enforcementand fire departments participat-ing.

Of course, there will be thelongstanding parade entries -farm equipment, horse riders,antique cars, and the DeLeonPeach and Melon FestivalQueen court, local duchesses,and other queens from neigh-boring communities.

Also be sure to get a sneakpeak of DeLeon ISD’s band,

sports teams, and cheerleadersfor the coming school year.

It is presumed that theywill all be distributing candy tothe young and the young atheart.

Following the parade,head over to the parking lot ofFirst Baptist Church, directlywest of the sanctuary, to enjoyyour favorite peach iced tea,peach ice cream and peach cob-bler. It’s fun, food, and fellow-ship, so come on over and cooloff.

If you have a young one athome, head over to the DeLeonCommunity Park followingparade and sign them up for theKiddie Tractor Pull in front ofthe Festival Stage at 8:30 p.m.Children ages three to eight willbattle for awards and braggingrights as they pedal cast iron toytractors across the FestivalGrounds.

At 9 p.m., stop by theFestival Stage and attend themelon and cake auction to sup-port local 4-H entrants and thePeach and Melon Festival. (Allfruit entries should be deliveredto the Festival Stage from 9a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday.Judging will take place at 1p.m.)

As always, the carnivaland midway at the FestivalGrounds will also be open forfamily friendly fun.

The 4-H Cake Contest andAuction will be heldWednesday, August 3, 2016 inconjunction with the DeLeonPeach & Melon Festival. Thisyear’s rules are as follows:

The Peach & MelonFestival Cake Contest andAuction gives all ComancheCounty 4-H members an oppor-tunity to bake a cake to bejudged and sell the cake at theauction. You must be currentlyenrolled in 4-H in ComancheCounty prior to this contest to beeligible to enter.SCHEDULE9:00-10:30 a.m. Bring cakes tothe office behind the FestivalStage11:00 a.m. Entries will bejudged12-12:30 p.m. Pick up entriesthat will not be auctioned8:40 p.m. or immediately fol-lowing parade come to the stagearea to be with your cake for theauction9:00 p.m. Auction on festivalstage (cakes, melons and fruitswill all be auctioned during thesame time period)CAKE CLASSESClass 1 - Layer Cake (round,square or shaped cake with icingbetween layers and on top)Class 2 - Pound Cake (may beiced, glazed or plain)Class 3 - Decorated CakeClass 4 - Cake Mix Based CakeClass 5 - Miscellaneous Cake(any cake that does not fit anyother class)RULES

1. There will be four agecategories, based on the schoolgrade for the 2015-2016 year:Clover Kids - through grade 2Juniors - in grades 3-5Intermediates - in grades 6-8Seniors - in grades 9-12

2. Entries are limited to oneentry per class per person. You

may enter more than one class,but only one entry in each class.

However, only one cakemay be auctioned per person. Ifyou have more than one entry,the highest placing cake will beauctioned unless otherwisespecified.

3. Copy of recipe must beattached to each entry (recipewill not be returned).

4. Cake must be on dispos-able plate and covered with clearplastic (may be either clear plas-tic wrap or clear plastic cakedome). Cakes will not be accept-ed if presented in the same panor container in which they werecooked.

5. Mixes may not be usedin any of the cake classes exceptClass 4. This is not meant to bea class for simply a cake mixand the cake will be disqualifiedif only a mix is used. The cakemust have other ingredients toenhance the cake and will bejudged on how creative the 4-H’er can be with a cake mix.

6. No items needing refrig-eration will be accepted (thisincludes cheesecake, whippedcream frosting, or any other rea-son that cake needs to be refrig-erated). Buttercream-type icingusing butter, powdered sugar,milk and flavorings are fine.

7. Cakes must be made bythe 4-H’er who is entering thecake.

8. Judges decisions arefinal.

9. Only cakes entered forjudging may be auctioned.

10. 4-H members must bepresent to display their own cakeon stage, or the cake will not besold.

11. The Peach & MelonFestival, the De Leon 4-H Club,and any leaders or workers ineither group are not responsiblefor cakes left after pickup time.

12. The 4-H member willreceive 50% of the selling price.Your check for this amount willbe sent to the County ExtensionOffice by the Peach & MelonFestival Committee. Checkswill be mailed to participantsafter thank-you notes written toeach buyer, enclosed in anaddressed (but unsealed) enve-lope with a 47¢ stamp properlyattached, and a stamped andunsealed envelope addressed toyourself, have been brought tothe Extension Office.
