FALL

SVNA Labor Day Picnic  How nice to see the return of the Labor Day Picnic. How nice to see so many of you there enjoying each other’s company. It is a beautiful thing to see friends and neighbors working together for such a memorable time. The food was delicious and plentiful, the music was superb, everyone had fun. We raised over $1,400 for the benefit of our community from the raffle. Well done! And thank you to the many

people involved to make it happen. I can’t wait for next year Making Santa Venetia even better!  A huge reason I enjoy being on the SVNA Board has to do with working with the other Board members. We all have one thing in common. While we know Santa Venetia is a great place to live, we also believe there is room to improve. Our role is to connect people and bring awareness to the community on issues that affect us all. Working together as a community we can make decisions that focus on improvements that will benefit everyone. Santa Venetia now has an important issue to decide. And it has to do with flood protection.Paradigm Shift  For a number of years now, I have listened to complaints from some of our neighbors regarding the service the County provides. The focus has been fairly negative. What I have heard indicates a lack of trust. It appears some folks have grown to expect everything that could go wrong – will go wrong. It seems the focus is to just expect minimal results. Does this really happen? Am I just some Pollyanna who fails to see reality? I don’t think so. I believe in our community and I believe in our partners at the County. I know that there is a process involved in order to get things done and I know the value of community involvement and persistence. Taking a closer look… Many streets here in Santa Venetia over the last few years received new pavement overlays, which included new sidewalks where either none existed or what was there was falling apart. The result is nicer and safer streets and sidewalks.Despite having limited funds, County staff has really done a great job preventing this community from flooding. By performing good preventa-tive maintenance and prioritizing needs with the limited funds available, our flood zone has performed well. In my opinion, we should be giving them high praise and be grateful. The County is doing some excellent work for us.Because of the efforts of several of our neighbors, along with County planners – Santa Venetia now has a community plan which is serving us well.I say it is now time to make a shift. Let’s place our focus on making Santa Venetia an even better place to live and at the same time let go of the notion that the County can’t be trusted.Where you place your attention defines what you should expect in return. If you’re dwelling on negative aspects and focused on mistrust and past failures, guess what? In return you will get an abundance of the same sort of things.I enjoy riding off road motorcycles. There are many hazards surrounding me – all sorts of things, like tree limbs, rocks, holes in the trail. Once I see them, I want to avoid them. If I continue to focus on them as I get close, the chance that I will run right into them increases. Instead, I need to focus on where I want to go, not what I might hit. It is really true. I know from experience. So, what am I saying? It’s time to focus on what we want for Santa Venetia. There is no ques-tion Santa Venetia needs flood control. And now sea level rise is loom-ing in our future. Myself, I would like to see our neighborhood achieve 100-year storm level protection. At the same time, I think we need to take a practical approach to get to that level. It is important to continue to prioritize the improvements we need and take it one step at a time. What do all of you think? If we can come to an agreement and then shift our focus on what we can create together, we will be unstoppable. And this community will be improved by our efforts. ‑ Russ

Supervisor’s Corner - Fall 2019

• Damon Connolly, District 1 Supervisor, 415-473-7331, [email protected], http://tinyurl.com/DamonCOur office has been humming through the summer and we are now heading into fall with a robust set of issues. I continue to focus on transportation, disaster preparedness and resiliency, and the environment. I want to share some of the things that we are work-ing on this month.

Transportation I serve as chair of Marin Transit which allows us to get people where they need to go in the county and provide first and last mile service for SMART train riders. Marin Transit is proposing that senior and disabled riders can qualify for free rides. Additionally, we are look-ing at cutting the adult monthly pass amount in half. Hopefully this will encourage additional ridership. On the train front, SMART train service to Larkspur is projected to begin in late 2019. I’m happy to say that the Francisco Boulevard West Multi Use Path is open as well, connecting from Andersen to Rice Drive in down-town San Rafael. Take a walk or a bike ride along this quiet protected pathway when you have a chance.Buck’s Landing I am happy to report that the County has resolved legal challenges that had held up its effort to acquire Buck’s Landing, which the Marin County Parks hopes to turn into a park. Marin County Parks has submitted a grant request to raise part of the funding for the acquisition from the State and should hear back in the next month regarding that possible source of funding. The County hopes to be able to complete the acquisition within the next six months.Disaster Preparedness The Sunny Oaks/Bayhills neighborhood of Santa Venetia was recently recognized as a national participating site by FireWise USA! Thank you, James and Heidi Paizis, for taking the laboring oar in organizing the neighborhood. This recognition is based on the work and investment of the neighborhood in pursing fire safety on their individual properties and in the neighborhood as a whole. Building this kind of awareness creates community, relationships with local fires safety officials, and the local FireSAFE Marin organization. With the recognition, Sunny Oaks/Bayhills became eligible for grants that can defer the expense of some of the work. I encourage you all to join them in the effort if you haven’t already.Other Santa Venetia neighborhoods are encouraged to join the over 49 Marin neighborhoods and HOA’s currently participating. Please go to the FireSAFE Marin website (www.firesafemarin.org) or contact Jim Paizis at [email protected] for further details.Protecting Our Waterways Much of the trash that accumulates in our creeks, wetlands, bays and ocean starts as litter on streets, sidewalks and parking lots. When it rains, trash goes into storm drains and out to the bay endangering wildlife, the quality of recreation, and threatening our waterways. California State water quality regulations will soon require local governments to prevent trash from passing through storm drain systems to waterways. The Marin Countywide Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (MCSTOPPP – https://tinyurl.com/y2rv3p2b) was awarded a $685,000 grant to implement projects and programs designed to prevent trash from entering local creeks and bays. The money will go toward imple-menting a new state requirement to prevent trash measuring 5 millime-ters and larger (cigarette butts and bigger) from being discharged into public storm drain systems from “priority land use areas” by 2030. These include commercial, industrial, high-density residential areas and transit stops. The grant will leverage planned and ongoing efforts by Marin’s local governments to reduce trash in our communities from a variety of sources. MCSTOPPP, which is a partnership between Marin’s 11 cities and towns and the unincorporated areas of Marin, spearheads state and federally mandated pollution prevention activities for Marin. Long-term, this is about minimizing the impact of trash in our waterways and harm to wildlife.Flood Zone 7 (FCZ #7) For those who live in the flood zone, please make sure you are subscribed to the County website for Flood Zone 7 Advisory

SVNA National Night Out 2019• Catherine LagardeAs we had done in previous years, on August 6, the SVNA participated in the National Night Out for our August SVNA Community Meeting. SVNA provided a few yummy pizzas from Gaspare’s Pizzeria as well as drinks. Several neighbors pitched in and brought delicious desserts. Our neigh-bor Wayne Lechner brought freshly picked and cooked purple carrots.Board member Gina Hagen introduced the SVNA community and the participating Sheriff and Firefighter Officers. First up, were Sheriff Depu-ties Brenton Schneider and Jordan Litle, with our Supervisor, Damon Connolly. Officer Litle is now the full time public information for the Sheriff’s department. His areas of expertise, besides social media, are emergency and wildfire preparations and criminal justice. He addressed the consequence of PG&E powering down—in particular for people with medical needs. He encouraged the public to sign up for Nixle alerts and Alert Marin. He also exposed the dangers of generators and recommend-ed having them installed by a qualified electrician. Officer Litle’s tasks are to enforce the no parking zone and investigate a series of burglaries in the neighborhood. Neighbors can see the Officer patrolling the area as he is on duty from 7pm to 7am.We were then joined by Fire Captain Nathan Clark, Fire Engineer Rich Nettelman, and Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Jennings from the San Rafael Fire Department. Our local new “Fire Station 57” is expected to open on October 1. The Firefighters reiterated the need for vegetation manage-ment and the importance of Alert Marin (www.AlertMarin.org)At the end of the meeting, the community discussed a few more topics like the upcoming SVNA Labor Day Picnic, the San Rafael City Schools redistricting, the changing of CSA #18 (Parks) boundaries, as well as the Marin County/San Rafael Airport MOU.Not only was this event a fun gathering with neighbors, we also received invaluable information from both the Sheriff and the Fire Departments. EDITOR’S NOTE: We were featured in San Rafael Fire Hot Shot News! – “San Rafael Fire and OES are always happy to support the great events put on around the City for National Night Out. The Police-sponsored event offers opportunities for neighbors to come out, meet each other, and speak with the public safety staff that keep our community safe everyday. Our engines, ambulances, and Fire Prevention staff visited the majority of the 17 events hosted throughout San Rafael, including an emergency preparedness meet-ing in Santa Venetia with Marin County Supervisor Damon Connolly and representatives from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office (see photo). Thanks to our partners and neighbors for a fun and safe evening.” To read the complete SRFD Newsletter, visit https://tinyurl.com/y4cake9x

From the Food Tent• Nanni WurlThe Picnic was a roaring success! We had a very slow start since we missed a year and forgot the routine, but every-thing turned out nicely. Good people, good food, and great music!Members of the Median Crew showed their dedication to the community and helped with the set-up and serving of food. Thanks are due to Median Crew members: Carolyn Byrne, Dennis Bortoli, and Carl & Helen Sitchler joined by An-drea Kloh. Great help was also received from Tom Ellerman who went shopping with Den-nis and me, helped setting up, cleaning, and taking tents and tables down, and did most of the barbequing! And thanks also to all those who helped with set-up and take-down of the Food Tent (see names in the article above). It is quite a monster and many hands make the job so much easier. And finally, many thanks to Sylvia Lakeman! Each year she brings in more money for our medians and emergency supplies. Her hard work is very much appreciated. What a super lady!

Picnic Raffle and Silent Auction a Huge Success!• Sylvia Lakeman

The raffle and silent auction did well. We made over fourteen hundred dollars, more than enough to buy mulch, plants, garden hoses for the median strips and to replenish our emergency supplies. While we hope we’ll never need them, it is comforting to know that we have two well stocked emergency supply carts in the neighborhood. A new and very popular raffle prize this year were tickets to The Best of San Francisco Solo Series

at the Marin Center. Gabriella C. Calicchio, the Director for the Marin County Department of Cultural and Visitor Services, was kind enough to organize this and deserves our special thanks. We were also delighted to receive tickets for performances at the JCC Kanbar Center and guest passes for the Koret Health and Fitness Center. Our thanks to Iris Lax, Director of Marketing & Strategic projects at Osher Marin JCC for her generosity. We were also thrilled to receive free annual parking and trail walking passes for China Camp organized by Friends of China Camp. Our Silent Auction Table continues to do well and I want to send special thanks to everyone who contributed items, including Marin Symphony, Tom Cheap, Sandy Fullerton, Mike Barnes and Marion Love. Many thanks also to The Santa Venetia Market, Rocky’s Quality Meats, Marin Ace Hardware, Silbermann’s Ice Cream, Chalet Basque, Eduardo’s Restaurant, Banh Mi Zion Restaurant, and Tom Cheap for their generous donations, and to local artists Denise Bank, Kim Bosch, Betty Schafer, and author Linda Hepworth. A huge thank you also to Jim Walsh Baker Extraordinaire, Bruno our neighborhood vintner, Tracy Morris, Arthur The Bee Guy, Sue Ann Anderson, and Kurt Huget.Last, but not least, a very special thank you to Nicole Peele for helping with the raffle and silent auction and to Supervisor Damon Connolly for his expert help with the raffle drawing. I cannot close without men-tioning Kim Bosch for staffing the raffle table and making our bulletin 4 S V N A C O M M U N I C AT O R S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2 0 1 9

Best Cookie Contest!!• Sue Ann Anderson, Member, Santa Vene-tia Neighbors Helping NeighborsAnother fun part of the picnic is the Cook-ie Baking Contest!! We had three delicious entries this year and THREE DELICIOUS WINNERS! Our judges, Roger & Christine Minhondo and Jim & Monica Walsh, had a hard job since all the cookies were sooooo good! But after a difficult deliberation, the outcome was: 1st place – Melanie LaCome, Ranger & Chocolate Chips2nd place –Jackie Watson, Chocolate Chip3rd place–Terry Anderson, Chocolate Chip w/PretzelsPicnic attendees that had a chance to taste the cookies after the judging all agreed the entries were delicious!! We hope whether you are an expe-rienced baker or new to baking, you will consider entering your cookies next year!! AND YOU HAVE A WHOLE YEAR TO PRACTICE!!

United Against Hate Week• Gina Hagen, 415-377-3377, [email protected] Against Hate Week is November 17-22, 2019. It was cre-ated by Not In Our Town (NIOT) and is a call for seven days of local civic action by people in every Bay Area community to stop the hate and implicit biases that are a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns and cities. “United Against Hate was created by civic leaders in direct response to the sharp rise in expressions of hate in our communities. We want to em-power local residents to take action in their local communities and alter the course of this growing intoler-ance. When cities and their residents work together against hate, we can restore respect and civil discourse, embrace the strength of diversity and build inclusive and equitable communities for all.” - NIOTOur Board of Supervisors has adopted inclusive messaging throughout the Marin County Civic Center. You can find fantastic “We Welcome” signs posted throughout the building (see photo).San Rafael Building Bridges (SRBB) is a wonderful group started by neighbors. With many members from our local Santa Venetia community, SRBB is a network of North Marin residents who came together about three years ago to take positive action in challenging times. The group strives to provide a foundation of mutual support and base goals on participant input. The group has focused on primarily the environment, immigration, and healthcare. Activities range widely from collecting donations for our local families, to petition signing for the endangered species act. This fall SRBB will be offering a “Spanish for election activists” class for Outreach to Latino voters. SRBB strives to be a warm and wel-coming community for all. If you would like to attend, the group meets monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7pm, 164 N. San Pedro Road, Santa Venetia.Michele Woodbury, daughter of Doreen and Manny Ishtam grew up on Estancia and you can frequently find her in the neighborhood visiting with her family and friends, enjoying walks on the marsh and talking with neighbors. She’s a school counselor at Coleman and Glenwood Elemen-tary Schools and has brought “Start With Hello”, a Sandy Hook Promise initiative fostering empathy and inclusivity to both schools. Kidpower International is an organization I have been working with - I’m a candidate to be a certified Kidpower instructor. I work with kids and their grownups teaching “people safety skills” in a joyful and fun way. The Kidpower Mission Statement is: “To provide effective and empower-ing child protection, positive communication, advocacy, personal safety, and self-defense skills for all ages, abilities, cultures, beliefs, genders, and identities, locally and around the world.”For more information:https://www.niot.org/unitedagainsthatehttps://www.sandyhookpromise.orghttps://www.kidpower.orgfor San Rafael Building Bridges info, call 415-686-9331

Venetia Valley (TK-8) School - an ICAN University• Excerpts taken (and edited) from a Press Release received from Juan Rodriguez, Principal, 415-492-3150, [email protected] Parent (and longtime SV resident and SVNA member) Tes Lazzarini had triplets at Venetia Valley who were promoted in 2015. She was curious what became of that class and their aspirations regarding college. She took steps to find out. She worked with one of her sons’ classmates, Mirna Mejia who is shown in the photo at right. What happens when a school has a vision that includes the premise that every child is college material and college bound, adopts a school culture that validates identity, infuses systemic rigor and establishes research based learning structures? Leadership and staff of Venetia Valley (TK-8) School embarked on this mission in 2012 when SRCS Principal Juan Rodriguez took the helm and introduced the I CAN University framework and philosophy. The significance here is that Venetia Valley is a Title I school in which 70% of students live below the minimum poverty guidelines.Seven years later, Venetia Valley alumnus parent Tes Lazzarini asked the question, “What became of our first I CANners?” With the help of her triplets, but mostly their classmate Mirna Mejia, who likewise completed her K-8 education at Venetia Valley, Tes completed a survey of the Venetia Valley class of 2015. Most of the students had gone on to Terra Linda High School. Thanks in part to the strong relationships within this class, the team was able to track down 56 of the 60 students who participated in the Venetia Valley promotion ceremony seven years ago. What they learned is astonishing. Tes Lazzarini said, “I had no idea what I would discover. I thought, maybe 60% would go on to college.” The truth is that of the 56 students who they were able to connect with, 55 students were college bound and one was going to the Marine Corps and expected to take online courses - that means 100% are college bound.Principal Juan Rodriguez responded to this news with joy, “This means that we are beating the odds and surpassing national statistics about children of color. As a Title I school, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and children are achieving their dreams.”Venetia Valley student alumnus Mirna Mejia Munguia said, “Venetia Valley School inculcated in me the importance of attending a univer-sity. Their caring and dedicated staff fomented my love of learning, and guided me through challenges so that I could understand that although it may be difficult to reach my goals, anything is possible.”“My parents never had the opportunity to have a college education, so I made it my personal goal to make sure I challenged my abilities, reached my potential and could proudly gain admission.”

“Venetia Valley is not just a school, but a place where I learned to be myself, love myself, love others, and matured into the young woman I am today. The students and staff at the school create such a welcoming and encouraging environment where mistakes are treated as potential for growth, and every single day I see the school I grew up in evolve to become more empathetic, diverse, and open minded.”For more information, contact Juan Rodriguez at 415-492-3150, [email protected]. In an effort to attempt to ensure our neighborhood does not flood again, the County and our Flood Control Advisory Board (FCZ #7) have been discussing a Bond Measure for the November 2020 ballot. We thought

it would be useful to provide some information to the neighborhood.

Do you know if you live in a Flood Zone? (See the

map. FCZ #7 includes approximately 860

homes in Santa Venetia)

Did you know there are Berms and a Timber Levee behind the houses on Vendola Dr. that help keep the water from flooding our neighbor-hood?

Do you remember the past floods in

Santa Venetia? (The photos at right show

floods from 1955 and 1982-83)

• Gerhard Epke, Marin County Flood Control District, Senior Program Coordinator, 415-473-6562, [email protected] The Flood District is evaluating the possibility of upgrading the levee and timber-reinforced berm behind homes on Vendola Drive. This fall the District will focus on (1) clarifying the real estate process for those homes, as the project would involve acquisi-tion of permanent maintenance easements along the levee, (2) certifying and releasing the final environmental document, which includes responses to comments received this summer, and (3) progressing with engineer-ing enough to have a specific design elevation. Plans to put a tax measure on the ballot have been put on hold while the above information made available to the neighborhood. This flowchart depicts the estimated process and funding options for moving towards a project.

“While the old TRB system has worked so far for high tides, the deterioration of the timber, compounded with the rising sea levels and sinking land elevations, threatens its ability to protect Santa Venetia from flooding.”

“A 10-year flood has a 95.8% chance of occurring and a 100-year flood has a 26% chance of occurring over the next three decades.”

“The evaluation concluded that the existing levee/TRB system had an 80% chance of failing before water levels get high enough to overtop it.”

Our Flood Control Zone #7 has been working with the County to put a Tax Initiative on the ballot to fund repairs and access to the TRB to protect our neighborhood. This most recent Initiative includes matching funds from the County for our taxed dollars as well as a one-time $3M grant from FEMA (https://tinyurl.com/yy2n9xek)The way we look at it, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get FEMA funding and money from the County to help us solve this problem. It will cost SO MUCH MORE if we squander this chance.”If you are as concerned as we are, or to get more details, please visit:- Project Page: https://tinyurl.com/y2lkjcb4- Staff Report: https://tinyurl.com/y6kjo7af

Proverbial Dutch Boy• Dennis BortoliThese are scary times. Anchorage was warmer than the Florida Keys, the world’s lungs are being lost at a record rate and devastation is on a global scale. Hopefully most of us realize Global Warming is very real and each year it is happening faster than the experts expected. I also hope we realize the resulting increasing sea level rise makes us, here in Santa Venetia, exceptionally vulnerable. We have water running down the mountain on one side, sea water trying to breach the other, and our neighborhood is low-lying and many homes are sinking. We are in Flood Zone 7, classified as one of the most susceptible to floods. We need unity and common purpose in combating this threat, for it is a job we cannot do alone. You might say leave me alone, I have never flooded; we can cross that bridge when we come to it. Then again, you might say the threat is real and you’re willing to sacrifice to protect and improve future prospects for yourselves and your neighbors. You might wish to ask yourselves, ‘what am I willing to give up’ to protect and improve our chances? That might mean possibly losing a prized Juniper, an illegally built shed, some tax dollars, or the authority to deny

the County levee access. I live on the water and can sympathize with the latter for I realize levee repairs cannot be timely if authorization to enter might take months and any resulting maintenance easement does not signify land ownership. Personally, I would be devastated, and consulting a lawyer, if my levee was found to be the cause of my neighbors being flooded. You might say you do not trust the government, but that is where the help is. You may ask ‘is this our best option’? A taller sea barrier is need, how tall is defined by the money available. That is why this is being proposed, the cost of a major job is beyond our reach. Currently nearly a million dollars of matching funds from the county and a 3 million dollar FEMA grant are available, but it all hinges on our tax dollars showing good faith by matching County’s offer.Keep in mind time is a factor, for natural disaster waits for no one. Is it a gamble, probably, but what other options do we have? Again, we cannot do it alone – we have to come together as a community. The USA has 12,383 miles of coastline, much more in shoreline, and our financial need may seem inconsequential in comparison at a later date.Hopefully, I have provided you with some food for thought.

LGVSD Construction Update 8/30/19• Robert Ruiz, LGVSD Admin Services Manager, 415-472-1734Construction on the three-year, $62 million Secondary Treatment Plant Upgrade and Recycled Water Expan-sion Project continues! An upcoming construction milestone is a significant concrete pour, which will support the installation of the new Anoxic Basin, Aeration Basin, and Electrical Building. An estimated total of 410 cubic yards of concrete will be brought onto the District’s job site during September. This means that concrete trucks are expected to be making at least 80 trips in and out via Smith Ranch Road throughout that month. In addition, a large quantity of reinforce-ment steel deliveries will be taking place over the coming weeks, along with many other construction activities. All this will result in a continuing, high amount of heavy construction and equipment traffic on Smith Ranch Road. A high level of caution is advised for anyone visiting the District. The reclamation ponds parking area is open – if you are planning on visiting the reclamation ponds and trails, or the District offices:BE CAUTIOUS - you are very near a major construction zone and heavy construction traffic; drive slowly and watch in all directions for equip-ment, trucks, and work crews on Smith Ranch Road.BE AWARE of lane changes and temporary closures of Smith Ranch Road.OBSERVE ALL SAFETY & TRAFFIC SIGNAGE and follow directions from construction flaggers and workers.DO NOT PARK ON SMITH RANCH ROAD - the only parking for the reclamation ponds is at the trailhead parking lot – there is no overflow parking available.DO NOT WALK ON SMITH RANCH ROADGo to www.lgvsd.org/construction before your visit to make sure the access road and trailhead are open and available, and for updates and more information about this project. Thank you for your continued patience during this construction. We apologize for any inconvenience - these cautionary guidelines are neces-sary to help ensure the safety of all visitors and construction crews.

• Nanni WurlContinuing our dedication to the Medians, we worked again in two groups. Dennis Bortoli, Laurie Burton, and Carl & Helen Sitchler contin-ued on the Long Median while Carolyn Byrne, newcomer Isela Díaz, and Wayne Lechner worked between La Pasada and Birch. This median could use some plants, but will have to wait. Many thanks to Joel Yau for again loaning us a can. Sadly, nobody picked up a sheet and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what I had to take.In August, we went back to the medians between Schmidt and the Con-valescent Home. The Medians do not look too bad driving by, but once you start working on them, you realize there’s a lot to be done. The Crew consisted of Carolyn Byrne, Laurie Burton, Isela Díaz, Wayne Lechner, and Carl & Helen Sitchler. Carl and Wayne weed-whacked and the rest of us pruned, etc.

Marin Center and the Marin Cultural Association Presents• Libby Garrison, Department of Cultural Services, County of Marin, 415-473-6014, [email protected] Center and the Marin Cultural Association, in partnership with Brian Copeland, present The Best of San Francisco Solo Series. On the heels of a successful run, Brian Copeland returns to present some of the Bay Area’s most critically-acclaimed, award-winning, and beloved solo shows for an exclusive run at Marin Center. The series runs from October 2019 through March 2020 and features performances by Copeland, Diane Barnes, Steve Budd, Marga Gomez, and Irma Herrera. Performances take place at the Marin Center Showcase Theater, 10 Av-enue of the Flags, San Rafael, CA. Tickets: Oct 1-Mar 1: $40 per ticket + fees, Pick any three performances: $25 per ticket + fees. Tickets and information: www.marincenter.org / 415-473-6800.NOTE: Due to mature language and themes, this series is recommended for ages 15 and up. Irma Herrera: Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name?, October 13, 2019, 7pmWhat’s in a name? A minefield of misplaced notions—comical, sad, demeaning. Hearing Irma Herrera give her name its correct Spanish pronunciation, leads people to make all sorts of assumptions about her. Irma’s observations from the front-lines, notes from American history, and laugh-out-loud humor allow us to consider what it will take for all of us to get along. “Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name?” sheds light and throws shade on ALL our prejudices.Diane Barnes: My Stroke Of Luck, November 10, 2019, 7pmDiane wakes up alone. The place looks hauntingly familiar. But she expected to be dead. Where am I? she wonders. It’s not the hospital. Is it home? But if this is my home, where are my children? A spellbinding and funny look at love, family and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. “My Stroke of Luck” is the story of a single adoptive mother of special needs and gifted sons, a practicing physician, who forges a new identity after a debilitating stroke.

• Sheila Coll, FOCC Program Director, [email protected] of China Camp hosted its annual Heritage Day celebration at China Camp State Park this year on August 24th. The event began at 11am, and visitors of all ages gathered around the Village deck to watch the Marin Chinese Cultural Association’s (MCCA) Lion Dance’s opening number. Performances this year also included a dragon dance, cultural dancers, tai chi from the Redwood Empire Chi-nese Cultural Association, and music by Stephen Shen and Melody Yan. Damon Connolly and representatives from Marc Levine’s office also made appearances at the event and addressed the audience. The San Francisco Senior Center provided a shuttle from the city so that 40 Chinese-American seniors could enjoy the event. Many participated in a tour of the shrimping village museum in Cantonese, lead by Friends of China Camp’s bilingual docent, Ed Lai. The Grace Quan, a Chinese junk ship replica made an appearance, and staff from the San Francisco Maritime Museum (SFMM) showed visitors how the sail is hoisted and how the traditional boat is operated. The event also featured Mah Jong and other Chinese games provided by MCCA, mini boatbuilding by SFMM, and other exhibits by the National Estuarine Research Reserve, Wildcare, the Olompali People, the Marin Museum of the American Indian, the Marin History Museum and the Marin Fire Foundation. Delicious Chinese food was provided by the Marin Chinese Cultural Association. Thank you to all!Upcoming Events Full Moon Tai Chi, October 13, 6:30–7:30pm, $20 per person. Fun & Interesting Stuff to Do

Santa Venetia Neighbors Helping Neighbors (aka SVNHN)• Sue Ann Anderson, [email protected] are a group of friends, all longtime Santa Venetia residents, with the common goal of giving back to our community! Santa Venetia Neigh-bors Helping Neighbors (not to be confused with the Santa Venetia Neighborhood Association) was formed in February 2009. We have a yard sale at least once a year with all the proceeds going back into our community. One example: Most recently at the SVNA Labor Day picnic: The Spin-A-Wheel booth where the kids won school supplies with every spin of the wheel AT NO CHARGE TO THEM OR THEIR FAMILIES! It is such fun for the kids and us too! They take very seriously making their choices from the backpacks and other school supplies we have for them! And, if you were there, we hope you noticed the new personalized aprons we had on!! We want to give a BIG thank you shout out to Jamie O’Neil, and his business, O’Neil KG Bags in San Rafael, for creating them just for us and giving them to us as a gift! Several more examples of how we have been able to give back: » Giving 1 to 2 TLHS scholarships annually to Santa Venetia

graduate(s)! » Donating funds and school supplies to Venetia Valley School!

CSA #18 AB (Parks in SV) Update

• Gina Hagen, Chair, CSA #18 Advisory BoardBoundaries Marin Local Agency Formation Commission (Marin LAFCo) “promotes and coordinates the efficient delivery of local government services and encourages the preservation of open space and agricultural lands”. The Municipal Services Reviews (MSRs) which “are comprehensive studies of the availability, range, and performance of governmental ser-vices provided within a defined geographic area” are usually conducted every 5 year and were recently performed. Prior to the MSR process, problems with the current boundaries and “sphere of influence” of CSA#18 were identified. LAFCo staff also noted that the current purpose (to provide parks and recreation services) differs from the original pur-pose (to provide parks and recreation services AND to protect San Pedro Ridge from development). The boundaries were originally drawn to include those within the “views-hed” of San Pedro Mountain. Voters approved a 20 year $500,000 bond to procure and preserve 257 acres. After the bond was repaid in 1994, Marin County Parks and Open Space District took over management of San Pedro Mountain as an open space preserve.CSA #18 Advisory Board members advise Parks and Open Space Staff and the Board of Supervisors (BOS) on projects and programs on county lands within CSA #18 (Las Gallinas) that are funded from our CSA’s budget. Currently, CSA #18 includes Pueblo Park, Candy’s Park, the promenade on NSPR between Birch and LaPasada, Adrian Rosal Park and Castro Park. Currently, the CSA #18 Advisory Board has been working with various County of Marin staff members, including our Marin County Parks staff, as well as Jason Fried, Marin LAFCo Executive Officer, to identify and understand the issues and to propose a variety of recommendations of how to proceed, which will then be considered by the BOS. Ultimately the BOS, and possibly voters like you, will determine how to go forward - the MSR “sets the stage” for discussion. To view the DRAFT report, visit https://tinyurl.com/y4yxbz3w (an up-dated report will be available once adopted/approved)To see a video of the meeting, visit https://tinyurl.com/yycmrfquTo learn more about Marin LAFCo, visit https://www.marinlafco.orgWe need YOU! Our Advisory Board has a vacancy A CSA#18  Advi-sory Board member advises Parks and Open Space staff and our Board of Supervisors about the parks and open space within the boundaries of our CSA. Good Food & Neighbors Don’t forget, Gaspare’s Pizzeria is the place to go for a wonderful meal AND to benefit the SVNA. So, the next time you are too tired to cook, need a special night out, are ready to celebrate, and/or have a yen for some delicious Italian food or pizza: order in or order out at Gaspare’s. And remember – mention the “SVNA” and they’ll donate 15% of your meal ticket to our neighborhood. A big THANK YOU to Danny, Gaspare, and Robin!

» Assisting families through the Adopt-A-Family program! » Providing gift baskets and gift cards at Christmas time to those in

need! » Giving away Mistletoe in front of SV Market and the Post Office at

Christmas time! » Providing meals to women in a local homeless shelter!

We all love living in our Santa Venetia neighborhood, and most of us have been here for many, many years! Our group believes that working together, all of us can make a BIG difference in this world! Our shared experiences have strengthened our friendships and reinforced the power of community in all of us!! We love living in Santa Venetia!!

San Rafael Building Bridges• Sherri Patterson ([email protected]) and Diana King Did you meet us at SVNA’s recent Labor Day picnic? I hope so. We thank the SVNA for inviting us and our volunteers and getting the word out about our orga-nization. San Rafael Building Bridges is a network of neighbors dedicated to taking positive ac-tion in challenging times. A warm and welcoming community, we focus on participant interests, including immigration, the environment, and health care. The past few months we have been particularly active on immigration. Some of our accomplishments: » Collected and drove an overflowing van of donations (clothes,

food, gift cards, etc.) to Asylum Relief, the central immigrant shelter in San Diego for all incoming asylum seekers at our southern bor-der (in April).

» Continue collecting donations, especially items for children, for Border Angels, a non-profit which advocates for human rights, humane immigration reform and social justice, with a special focus on issues related to the US-Mexican border.

» Provided support for local people who are here seeking asylum and/or citizenship, such as two women from El Salvador who came to our annual picnic and were given a place to stay locally when they had a court hearing. Other efforts have consisted of helping local families at risk of deportation through letter writing, petition signing and appearances at detention court houses.

» Offering a specialized, culturally sensitive and activity focused intermediate Spanish class, Spanish for Activists, starting late Sep-tember/early October.

» In summer 2020 we are proud to be co-sponsoring a photo exhibit of award winning photographer, Mark Tuschman, at Dominican University, “Immigrants Are US,” that expounds the benefits of im-migrants in our society.

San Rafael Building Bridges meets the fourth Thursday of every month in Santa Venetia. For location and further information, please call 415-686-9331 or see our facebook page: https://tinyurl.com/yxvt7gvj

Compiled by Linda Levey From Linda LeveySanders Oak - Claire Cummings was driving on North San Pedro Road in late July when a massive branch fell off Sanders Oak, a heritage valley oak tree, and landed just in front of her car. People nearby who heard the crash gathered around clearly concerned with the fate of the tree. The Fire Department cleared the road and the County said they will assess the health of the oak, do trimming to keep the oak healthy, and do their best to preserve it. The sign that Claire put up in 1991 to honor Dick Sanders was broken, but plans are in place to repair or replace it. Look for an update in the next newsletter. Wayne Lechner and Friends have been collecting items for Fire Survivors of Butte County and holding yard sales to raise money to pay for gas and a modest stipend for volunteers and survivors who come from up north to pick up the furniture and supplies. If you can help or have items and/or money to donate, please contact Wayne at 415-479-8618 or [email protected] very own Chalet Basque was recently highlighted in the Marin IJ under Restaurant Reviews: “Summary: A classic, old-school family restaurant, Le Chalet Basque has been offering good service and com-fort dishes for almost 60 years.” And not only is the food wonderful, the bustling bar is quite a social hub. If the compost driver discovers it, the truck needs to take everything to the dump. No dirty containers, only glass and plastic containers. Our rates are going to increase if we create more work for the sanitary department. From Gina on La BreaSharing Is Caring! Free fruits and veggies on the 2nd Saturday of the month, at 1pm until gone.
