Descendants of Augustus Isaac Seifert

Generation 1 1. Augustus Isaac Seifert-1 was born on Bet. 1817-1818 in Bavaria, Germany. He died on Abt. 1884[1].

He married Catharina Gasser Preis Seifert on Abt. 1855. She was born on 1820 in Austria[2, 3]. She

died on 06 May 1903 in New York Mills, NY[2].

Notes for Augustus Isaac Seifert:

The 1855 Census in the Town of Lewis lists this family with the spelling of Cifort.

Declaration of intent filed June 4, 1857 at Oneida County Court. Naturalization took place

February 13, 1860. Naturalization papers state August was from Bavaria

1860 census books were for agriculture and business only, but found in the census index on the

computer as Augustus Sifard in Town of Lewis. In 1860 August lived in Ava, New York according to

his naturalization record.

According to 1865 Census records in Lewis County, Town of Lewis, August Sifert was born in

Germany was married twice.

Found in 1870 Census as August Lipher. An August Siepelt - farmer found in Lewis Co. directory

1872-1873 listed as Lee Center, Oneida Co.

In 1880 Census, he was listed with Catherine, Charles, George and Margaret. In 1892 he as not

listed. Only George and his mother. The 1880 Town of Lewis Census says August was born in

Bayern, Germany. He imigrated from Bremen Germany. His wife's obituary said he died in 1884.

The information on the first family of August Seifert is not confirmed. I found it on a microfilm at

LDS. This is not proven.

I found an August Seifert age 36 arriving in New York City on the President Schmidt January 24,

1854. He was listed as a Brewer from Walfushausen. He had a son Carl with him, age 4 1/2.

Notes for Catharina Gasser Preis Seifert: Catherina died at the home of Charles Darling at 7:00 p.m. of pneumonia. In 1880 a C. Darling

age 27 was living with the Seiferts in Lewis County and was listed as a boarder. In 1870 the

Darling family lived next to the Seiferts in the Town of Lewis. Her funeral was from the home of her

son, George Seifert, City St., Utica, NY and St. Joseph's Church. According the the 1855 Town of Lewis Census, Catherine was married to August Seifert. Her son

Edward was born in Germany in 1852, so she arrived in America between the ummer of 1852 and the

time the 1855 census were taken. According to 1865 Census Lewis County, Town of Lewis,

Catherine had 7 children (only 6 listed). I found later she had a daughter Elizabeth probably from first

marriage not living with her in 1865. She was married three times according to the 1865 census.

The Rome City Directory says she lived with daughter 1901-1902 at 111 W. Fox St., Rome, NY.

Name from Germany was Cattarina or Catharina Gasser, Kafser, Gafser or Koiser. Gasser was

listed on her daughter's death certificate. She was born in Austria or Germany and came to America

and then to Utica as a young woman. She then moved to West Leyden where she lived until a few

years before her death. While in Utica, she was a member of St. Joseph's Church. She had 24

grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren at the time of her death.

listed in the 1865 Census. The 1860 West Leyden Census listed her as 5 years

old.

Notes for Susanna (Susan) Seifert: Godparents - Joannes Heer and Susanna Herbst. The 1860 West Leyden

Census listed Susan as 3 years old and that her last name was Stafford.

Notes for John Seifert: Godparents - Georgius Thomann and Barbara Schroeder. St. Michael's

church records said his name was George. Believe it was John.

2. George Sifer-2(Augustus Isaac Seifert-1)[9] was born on 11 Apr 1861 in West Leyden, Lewis County,

NY. He died on 23 Jan 1945 in Utica, NY[2]. He married Mary Johanna Schmidt Sifer on 07 Jun 1892

in St. Mary's Church, Prussian Settlement, West Leyden, NY[5], daughter of John Jacob Schmidt and

Catherine Schroeder Schmidt. She was born on 08 Nov 1864 in West Leyden, NY. She died on 05

Jan 1958 in Utica, NY. Notes for George Sifer: 1900 Census said he was born in April of 1862. Godfather - George Lenk and (Sejus Resore

Treliana). Baptism records show his name as Georgius Seifert. George came to Utica April 4, 1895

and went to work at the Kellogg Lumber Company. He was a member of the Teamsters and worked

in a lumberyard according to the 1910 Utica Census. He lived at 125 Hicks St., Utica, in 1900 (Ward

9). For many years after moving to Utica, George worked for the Kellogg Lumber Company for 47

years. He delivered lumbar by horse and wagon until he became older and then he was their

watchman. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

Generation 2

Notes for Mary Johanna Schmidt Sifer: Mary's Godparents were Joannes Phill Schmidt and Magdalena Finster according to St. Michael's

Church records.

For many years Mary J. Sifer was known to many Utica women as an exceptionally fine dressmaker.

She was born in West Leyden, and lived on a farm there and attended West Leyden School until her

family came to Utica to live. Here she attended St. Joseph's parochial school. As a young woman

she was employed as a children's nurse in the Park Ave home of George L. Roberts, a nephew of

Ellis H. Roberts, then U.S. Treasurer. She traveled considerable with the Roberts family, spending

summers in the Catskills. Then she went to Kansas City, MO where she worked as a dressmaker for

three years, returning to marry young George Sifer, who had a farm on Mohawk Hill, near West

Leyden. They came to Utica after a time and lived on City Street, Sunset Ave. and also in Maynard,

before taking up their residence on North Genesee St.

Mary loved to trim the Christmas tree. Her and her son-in-law spent two weeks before Christmas

trimming the tree and setting up a village under the tree, They made a train station, a church and

several little houses. George set up the train and Mary made clothes for the small people and made

curtains for the windows. This tree took up their living room. The public was invited to come in and

look at this. They would keep the tree up for two weeks after Christmas just for friends and

neighbors to enjoy. Before Christmas, sheets were hung so the children in the house could not see

the tree until Christmas morning.

Witnesses - Richard Uerz and Christina Link Taken from Boonville Herald - June 9, 1892 Mohawk Hill - June 8 - On the 7th day of June, in St. Michael's Church, occurred the marriage of

Miss Mary Smith of Utica to George Leifert of Prussian Settlement. The bride looked very prettily

attired in full bridal costume. Her dress was steel gray over which was draped a long white veil

falling from a wreath on her head. The bridesmaid was dressed in the same colors. A bountiful

wedding breakfast was served at John Sins.

i. Susanna Etta Sifer Bowman, B: 17 Jul 1893 in Ava, NY[10], D: 20 Jun 1966 in

Michael Isenecker and Susanna Brady. According to the 1910 Census, Utica, Susanna worked as a strapper in a

knittingmill.

Notes for George John Sifer: George was employed as an orderly at the Masonic Hospital. He was a

member of St. Joseph's Church. 3. Margaret Seifert Rivers-2(Augustus Isaac Seifert-1) was born on 16 Apr 1865 in Swancott

MillsTown of Lewis, New York. She died on 27 Apr 1925 in Rome, NY. She married Issac Rivers on

1882 in Delta, son of Abraham Rivers and Louise La Rivers. He was born on 13 Oct 1859 in

Vermont, Canada, or Swancott Mills, NY[11, 12]. He died on 25 May 1931 in Rome, NY[13].

Notes for Margaret Seifert Rivers: Margaret lived at 518 N. Jay St., Rome, NY when she died. She was of Presbyterian

Faith at time of death. She died of paralysis. She is buried in Lot 322 grave M.

Notes for Issac Rivers: Isaac died of Nephritis. Issac lived in the Town of Lewis, Lewis County in

the 1880 Census with Nicholas Schrader and family. The 1910 Census said he was a house painter and lived on W. Fox Street in Rome, NY. He lived at 518 North Jay

Street, Rome, NY at the time of his death. There is conflicting information on where Isaac was born. I

found Vermont, Canada, and Swancott Mills, Lewis County, NY. Isaac was a paperhanger and

painter.

ii. Ada Rivers Sherwood, B: 30 May 1886 in Lewis County, New York[2, 11], D: 25 Jan

Notes for Ada Rivers Sherwood: Lived at 117 W. Fox St., Rome, NY. Went to Point Rock School. Worked at

Oneida Co. Hospital. Moved to Rome in 1902.

iii. George R. Rivers, B: 31 Jul 1888 in Lewis County, NY[2, 11, 14, 15], D: 03 Apr 1955 in

Oneida County Hospital, Oneida, NY[2, 18], M: 1906 in Rome, NY.

Notes for George R. Rivers: George and his wife died the same day of natural causes. He had been seriously ill

for three weeks. When she went to the hospital to visit him, she had a heart attack.

They died 3 hours and 25 minutes apart. The 1910 Census said he was married for two years. He worked in a grocery

store. He lived in Rome in 1930 with wife Katherine. George was a tool and die

maker and wa employed by the rome Wire Co., predecessor to General Cable

Corp., Spargo Wire Co. and the Chrysler Corp. in Detroit.

iv. Lena Rivers Gleasman, B: 16 Sep 1891 in Swancott Mills, Lewis Co., NY[11, 19], D: 10

Mar 1971 in Rome Hospital, Rome, NY[2], M: 01 Jun 1909 in First Presbyterian

Church, Rome, NY. Notes for Lena Rivers Gleasman: Obituary

said she was born in Swancott Mills. Had been

ill a long time.

v. Ida Rivers Schwertfeger, B: 25 Dec 1894 in Point Rock, NY[20], D: 03 Feb 1977 in

Faxton Hospital, Utica, NY[2], M: 29 Apr 1920 in St. Joseph's Church, Utica, NY. 4. Charles August Seifert-2(Augustus Isaac Seifert-1) was born on Bet. 08 Jul 1847-1848 in Bochum,

Westfalen, Preussen, Germany[7]. He died on 26 Mar 1914 in Lee, NY[8]. He married Emma G. Rivers

Seifert on 03 Jul 1884 in Delta, NY, daughter of Abraham Rivers and Louise La Rivers. She was born

on 15 Jun 1867 in Troy, NY[21, 22]. She died on 22 Jan 1947 in Oneida County Hospital, Rome, NY[19,

23].

Notes for Charles August Seifert:

Godparents - Heinrish Furtseneau. Not a naturalized citizen. Unable to read or write.

. Death certificate #19519. Died at his home in Lorena, NY after a four week illness.

The 1860 Census showed Charles' last name as Stafford.

In the 1870 Census Charles was listed as living with John Dunn and working as a day laborer on his

farm. He was 22 at the time and it states he was born in Germany. Charles Seifert sold his land on

October 16, 1878 Charles sold propety to Gerrit-Hubert VanWagenen and Cornelia B., his wife.

Teamster listed as occupation in 1900 Census Town of Lee. Name now Sifer in 1900 Town of

Lee Census. Lived on West Lee Road, Town of Lee, in 1910. His obituary said he was born in Lewis County

and resided there until 1 1/2 years ago when his health failed and he retired from active life. He

attended Lee Center M.E. Church. His occupation was farming. Notes for Emma G. Rivers Seifert: Death certificate #3737. Death notice in Rome paper - Funeral from home of grandaughter Mrs.

Ivan Joanis, 414 N. George St., Rome, NY. The Rev. Kenneth Farnell, paster of Lee Center

Methodist Church officiated. Emma died of cerebral hemorrhage, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus. She had been

hospitlized for 5 days prior to her death. She had been ailing for 3 years. Emma lived in the Point

Rock vacinity until 32 years ago when she moved to Rome about 1914. She lived there in various

places thru 1941. In the 1915 Census she lived with four of her children at 302 W. Dominick St.,

Rome, NY. Burton, Mary, Lena, and Edward. She was a member of the Point Rock Methodist

Church. Her death certificate said she had been in Rome for 32 years, 6 monthsand 5 days. Lived at 117 W.

Fox St., Rome, NY at time of her death. Children of Charles August Seifert and Emma G. Rivers Seifert are:

i. Burton C. Seifert, B: 08 May 1885 in West Leyden, NY[24, 25], D: 13 Jun 1956 in

Rose Hospital, Rome, NY[2], M: 26 Jan 1910.

Notes for Burton C. Seifert: Burton lived at 319 E. Bloomfield St., Rome, NY at time of his death. He had

been ill for three weeks. Lived in Point Rock in 1933. He had lived in Rome for 33 years. Prior to that, he

lived in Buffalo. He had been employed by the Rome Cable Corp. He was a

member of the Rome Moose Lodge. Member of the Episcopal Church.

ii. Mary (Minnie) Emma Seifert, B: 04 May 1886 in Swancott Mills, Lewis County,

NY[24, 26], D: 06 Aug 1943 in Rome Hospital, Rome, NY[26].

Notes for Mary (Minnie) Emma Seifert: Mary never married as she lived with her mother. For 30 years prior to her death,

she and her mother lived with a niece, Mrs. Ivan Joanis, 206 Liberty Street, Rome,

NY. She will be buried in the family plot at the Point Rock Cemetery.

iii. Susan Anna Seifert Caterham, B: 28 Oct 1889 in Town of Lewis, NY[24, 27], D: 22

May 1963 in Buffalo, NY[28, 29], M: Abt. 1910.

Notes for Susan Anna Seifert Caterham: Lived in Rome in 1914 and in Buffalo in 1933 and in 1947 and 1956.

Notes for Lillian M. Seifert Swancott: Death certificate #35849. Died in Rome Hospital of pneumonia. Lived

in Swancott Mills in 1914. Attended Lee Center M.E. Church. Lived

on Main Street in Lee Center to the east of the Methodist Church.

Behind the house was the Swancott sawmill.

vi. Lena Seifert, B: 11 Jun 1902 in Point Rock, NY[2, 33], D: 28 Dec 1916 in Swancott

Mills, NY[2].

Notes for Lena Seifert: Lena had been in failing health for several weeks and finally her physician

advised that she be taken to a camp in the woods. Accordingly she went to a

camp near Swancott's Mills where she was tenderly cared for by her sister and mother. Nephew William Caterham

remembers her as being deformed. Lena was a favorite with her many friends

and possessed a bright and cheerful disposition which endeared her to all.

vii. Edwin Lyle Seifert, B: 20 Jul 1904 in Point Rock or Lee Center, NY[33, 34], D: 08

Sep 1959 in Pasadena, California[34, 35], M: Abt. 1933.

Notes for Edwin Lyle Seifert: Edwin, Betty and Shirley moved to Pasadena, California in July 1945.

Edwin was a car salesman in Lansing, Michigan. In California he sold

real estate for a while and then sold cars.

viii. Frederick Seifert, B: Abt. 1905[35], D: Bef. 03 May 1910[35].

Notes for Frederick Seifert: Frederick died in a "swinging" accident with a neighbor. Ruth Seifert-

Fogg remembers her father William being opposed to any child being

"swun by his arms". William may have witnessed this accident with his

brother.
