TRANSCRIPT
The stone walls of our seminary in St. Louis are decorated everywhere with little relief sculp-
tures and carvings. Each illustrates a passage of scripture or a scene from the Reformation,
EXCEPT…
Over one doorway is a surprising phrase, not from the Bible: Carpe Diem. Seize the Day.
This little phrase came to mind when I overheard two friends, one advising the other to take
advantage of a job offer. “Carpe Diem” he said. “Life is too short to worry about making the
wrong choice.”
Every Lent we spend forty or so days in repentance, reflecting that much of God’s world has
been perverted, emptied of meaning, or repurposed for evil. There is plenty we’d better say
“no” to—or it will affect us as well.
But Christians must never focus on Lent. Rather, we spend Lent focusing on the day that
God’s “YES!” thundered from heaven, broke open a tomb and brings a twisted world and
every creature in it from death to life.
Easter is the day God Himself has seized. It is THE DAY that makes all days good again.
Are you disappointed with Yesterday? Don’t be! God has seized that day, judged it, and with
the sunrise of Easter morning, transformed it to a new day of forgiveness and new life!
Remember Your Baptism—your own Easter morning when God gave You New Life in Jesus!
Are you frustrated with Today? Don’t be! This is the day the Lord has made new in Jesus’
resurrection! He walks with you, speaks to You and He is working out all things for good.
Stop and say a prayer. Hear His Word again in scripture!
Are you worried for Tomorrow? Don’t be—it may, after all, be the beginning of that everlast-
ing day when you awake with Jesus and see all things made new! At the very least, it will be
one day nearer.
Seize the day of Jesus Christ our Lord.

An Update from Young Life;
This has been an exciting school year for Young Life in Southeast Michigan. This fall, we started Young
Life Club in Addison. Club is like a party with a purpose, and the purpose is to share the story of Jesus
with high school kids who have never heard it before. It has been a huge success! We have averaged
between 40 and 60 kids coming out each week. We also have 10 to 15 kids coming to Campaigners
each week, which is our Bible Study for kids interested in learning more. We took a huge group to Fall
Weekend this past November at Camp Storer and are hoping to fill a bus for Summer Camp in Virginia
this June. Thank you for your support! Lutheran Church of the Lakes has been a major reason for
Young Life starting in Addison. Please pray for our leaders: John, Carrie, Jenna, Mitch, Jim, and Caleb.
That God would give them everything they need as they love kids. Thank you for your support!
In Christ,
- Jim Beach, Lenawee County Young Life Area Director

Palm Sunday March 20, 10:00AM
Palm Sunday (or Passion Sunday) is the gateway into Holy Week, the most important
week of the Church year. We see Jesus welcomed as messiah, and then capriciously
cast aside and crucified. As we hear the story of Jesus’ passion the most important
story ever told, we must consider the true source of our faith.
On this Palm Sunday we welcome our new members as they are
received into God’s Family at Lutheran Church of the Lakes.
A reception will follow the service.
PENTECOST ~ MAY 15, 2016
Forty days after Easter Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his disciples, strengthening them to share
the good news of Jesus Christ to all those around them. We celebrate this amazing miracle on
Pentecost, which is sometimes called the birthday of the Christian Church. On this day, we
also celebrate the Rite of Confirmation.
The liturgical color for Pentecost is red. If you have something red, you are invited to wear it!

The word Maundy (pronounced mawn-dee) comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means “command.” The com-
mand that this holy day refers to is the one that Jesus gave to his disciples during the Last Supper: A new commandment I
give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another. By this everyone will know
that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34–35

Dear Partners in Mission,
Developments in Ghana and changes for me
(David) On November 7, 2015 the pastors of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana
(ELCG) met and established a 'roadmap' for
transitioning leadership of the church to the
next generation. Rev. Dr. Paul Fynn has served
as president of the church for a number of
decades and desires to retire. He also wisely
advises that the ELCG transitions into a new
leadership rather than simply make an abrupt change.
The 'roadmap' entails equipping and placing a senior
pastor to serve as 'Bishop' in each of Ghana's ten
geographic regions. These ten bishops will elect one
of the ten to serve as "Presiding Bishop" This pastor
will serve as the chairman of the bishops and repre-
sent the church on the national and international
levels. This model of leadership multiplies the num-
bers of people involved in leadership and assures that there is always someone who is concerned about
mission and ministry in every corner of the country.
To prepare and equip these senior pastors, the ELCG
desires that each of these men has the opportunity to
study at one of our LCMS seminaries (in Ft. Wayne
or St. Louis). In order to reduce the amount of time
(and expense) that these men would need to spend in
the USA, the seminary in Ft. Wayne has
advised that these men study Greek and a number of
other subjects in preparation for their studies in the
USA. (Four ELCG pastors have already had the chance
to study in the USA during the past few years.) In addi-
tion, the ELCG also seeks to gain accreditation for their
seminary in Accra. None of the LCMS related seminaries
in West Africa are able to offer their students recog-
nized credentials for all of their hard academic labors.
Accreditation for our seminaries has been a long time
goal of mine. The ELCG has requested help from the
LCMS to achieve accreditation. All of these develop-
ments lead to a different role for me. Rather than con-
tinuing to serve on an administrative level, I am getting
back into more 'hands-on' work. I will be working to
prepare the three pastors who have been identified as
possible candidates for further studies in the USA and
ultimately for service as 'Bishop'. I will also be involved in
helping the seminary through the accreditation process.
Someone else has been chosen to handle all of the LCMS
administrative responsibilities. May God grant that these developments serve to strengthen and expand the
church in Ghana! All of this means a lot of change for me
- a lot less travel, meetings and email and a lot more
time in the classroom. This change also means a lot of
possibilities for the church here in Ghana. We appreci-
ate your prayers for us and the church in Ghana as I
work through the adjustments and make these changes.
Thank you for all of your prayers and support! Your
partners in mission, David and Joyce
Rev. David & Joyce Erber
At MISSION U the focus is equipping you, God's chosen ambassador, to carry His message of
hope and salvation into a world urgently in need of good news.
One in four American teens and young adults claim no religious connection whatsoever. How
will they hear the message of salvation through Jesus Christ if no one reaches them? As a follow-
er of Jesus, you have been commissioned to make disciples of all nations. Become equipped
through MISSION U to help you fulfill your mission with boldness to the diverse mission field
around you. You and your church can gain a scripture-based understanding of how outreach
works in a culture that doesn't care about God. MISSION U mirrors a 21st-century university
classroom - sequential yet flexible courses. Using dynamic speakers at your venue, MISSION U
features outreach training workshops tailored to your specific church led by Christian leaders in
outreach, as well as free monthly webinars from Christian leaders and speakers about contempo-
rary topics in Christian outreach.
LCOL hopes to sponsor Mission U Webinars and events throughout 2016 or you can go to

From the Financial Ministry
The state of the church
It is a pleasure to serve you as president of the congregation. Just like in previous years, we have a good board this year dedicated to serving God, each other, the community. We add-ed a new ministry to the board - stewardship - headed by Mike Helf.
Our mortgage principle is down and the giving is up. Many of us are volunteering in all facets of our ministry. You are all welcome to attend the parish council meetings to observe the business of the
church. We normally meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the church library. Be sure to check the church calendar as sometimes extenuating circumstances may change the date.
If you have any questions or anything you would like to discuss, don't hesitate to contact me. Bill Langenderfer 517-547-5545
2015 Financial Review
General giving for 2015 was $298,530 or 94% of budget. Total expenses were
$317,441 or 96.5% of budget. While this by itself would give reason to be concerned, we were in good shape to absorb spending
$18,000 more than received. The notable
causes for the difference are as follows: 1 - The federal government eliminated a
health care credit that we have received in previous years. We did not receive $4430 that we expected to receive.
2 - We had a special need this year after the budget was created. We asked for your help to purchase new projectors at the cost of
approximately $16,000. You generously re-sponded and they are wonderful.
These two line items are the primary reason for the shortfall.
The church mortgage balance at the end of the
year was $237,085. This is down from approxi-mately $310,000 one year ago. At the current run rate, we should be mortgage free in ap-
proximately four years. 2016 for January
Even with cancelling services one Sunday in January, general giving is slightly ahead of last year. It is too soon to know if the pattern will
continue. Sometime before the end of the first quarter we will start to publish in the weekly connection how general giving is tracking com-
pared to budget and historical data since we are somewhat seasonal. Thank you for all of your support.

means more
Than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of
things
We never get to say.
It means I love you first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I honor you.
But most of all, I guess it
means
That I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your

Mothers Day
May 8, 2016 8 ways to help aging parents
Empathize with your parents. Sometimes you might be taken aback by your par-
ents’ frustration, moody behavior or neediness. In fact, on some days, they might be
downright unpleasant to be around. But it’s important to be empathetic and under-
stand where they’re coming from. “Aging is a series of losses — loss of employment,
health and energy, friends, mobility, and independence.” Consider how you’d feel if
you were in their situation.
Call them regularly. The number one thing aging parents wanted from their kids
was simply to hear from them. Try setting a reminder on your phone to check in
with your parents and see how they’re doing.
Get other family involved. When helping your parents, don’t take on all the respon-
sibility yourself, unless you have to. Communication among family members also is
key when parents need financial help. “Sometimes siblings will help offset expenses
by giving your parents a little bit of money every month — they just need to know
what the financial need is in order to be able to make the decision to help.”
Seek out potential problems. Walk around your parents’ home, and scrutinize the
surroundings for any necessary repairs or changes. For instance, look out for uneven
flooring, handrails and well-lit hallways and stairs. Also, check if essential items are
within reach and emergency contact information is next to the phone. If something
major requires repair, find out if your state offers low-interest loans to seniors. Try
visiting senior care websites for more information.
Advocate for them. If your parent has an illness, make sure both of you have a good
grasp of what that means and what treatment entails. For instance, know the
medications they’re taking and when they’re supposed to be taken. If you’re accompa-
nying them to appointments, ask questions, and take notes.
Encourage them to be active. Many aging parents tend to be isolated, because they
stop driving, get tired easily or have hearing or vision loss. Helping parents stay both
socially and physically active. “Talk to them about their friends, senior groups, and
church or synagogue members. Find out what parks, the library, museums, nearby
universities, and community centers offer in the way of organized activities.” Physical
activity is key for improving mood, endurance, balance and strength and delaying
cognitive decline. For instance, aging parents can walk, or participate in exercise pro-
grams for seniors.
Help them downsize without being bossy. When helping your parents downsize,
don’t tell them what they should and shouldn’t keep or toss anything unless you have
their permission, she said. “Realize that your parents have many memories and treas-
ure things that remind them of relatives and happy events — these are specific to the
individual and just because you don’t see the value in certain items, doesn’t mean your
parent shares your view.”
Help them create a memory book. It’s common for seniors to experience short-
term memory problems. Reminiscing might help. Creating a scrapbook for your par-
ents, filled with photos and names of the people, places and pets from their past. If
you have time, work on the scrapbook together.
Contact your county area on aging agency for helpful resources and support .
