Selecting the Right Components

for Harsh Environments

Presented by Tim Deans: Global Hydraulic Engineering Lead

Selecting the Right Products for Extreme Environments

• Learn how to avoid common problems that harsh environments

pose for end markets including: o Oilfield

o Agriculture

o Mining

o Marine

o Food & Beverage

o Construction

o And more!

Selecting the Right Products for Extreme Environments

• Benefits to Making Informed Product Decisions: o Avoid costly downtime

o Reduce risk of damage to components and expense of replacing components

o Avoid contamination (for example, in the food industry)

o Prevent environmental damage (for example, from a toxic spill)

o Improve productivity

o Avoid potential damage

o Ensure a safe working environment

Environmental Issue: Abrasion

• Hose/Hydraulics

o Issues: hose abrasion, routing problems, crushing

issues, scraping, premature failure, rust/oxidation

o Solutions:

• Re-routing

• Use abrasion-resistant cover

• Switch to dual line hose

o Recommended Products: Mega Tuff® cover,

XtraTuff™ cover, and dual line hose such as M3K

DL or CM2T® DL

Environmental Issue: Abrasion

• Belts

o Issues: sprocket wear and rust, which results in belt wear

o Solutions:

• Replace sprockets and belts when signs of extreme wear

or rust appear

• Use plated sprockets and bushings to help prevent rust

• Review current drive guard and brainstorm methods to

further minimize belt drive exposure to abrasives

o Recommended Products: Poly Chain® GT® Carbon™

synchronous belt drive systems, Predator® V-belt drive

systems

Environmental Issue: Corrosion

• Hose/Hydraulics

o Issues: exposure to fertilizers, road and sea

salt, and UV radiation, which can break down

the steel in couplings creating a red rust on

the surface of the metal

o Solutions:

• Use corrosion resistant hose and plating

o Recommended Products: TuffCoat™ plating,

TuffCoat™ Xtreme, stainless steel couplings

Environmental Issue: Corrosion

• Belts

o Issues: exposure to humid or moist environments leave belt

drive components susceptible to rust corrosion

o Solutions:

• Minimize the exposure to fluids. In many cases, a made-

to-order metal solution can minimize corrosion and

extend drive life

• Use stainless steel or electroless nickel-plated sprockets

and bushings

o Recommended Products: 8mm Stainless Steel Poly Chain®

GT®2 sprockets or Gates Made-To-Order-Metals support team

Environmental Issue: Temperature Extremes

• Hose/Hydraulics

o Issues: hose breakdown

o Solutions:

• Replace with ozone resistant hose and/or hose that can handle a broad range of

temperatures

o Recommended Products: High-temperature hose (M4KH, M3KH, C5D and G2XH, for

example), PowerClean™ (Pressure Washer), 205MB Steam King® (Steam), 232MB

Steam Queen® (Steam) or Barricade™ 4219BF (Marine)

Environmental Issue: Temperature Extremes

Before After

• Case Study

Environmental Issue: Temperature Extremes

• Belts

o Issues: high temperatures can damage compounds and

cause cracking, chunking out, tooth shear. Quality belts

can withstand temperatures near -40F or lower

o Solutions:

• Replace cracked belts with belts that have special

high-temperature construction,

• Ensure proper ventilation

• Work with manufacturer engineering support for

applications in extreme cold

o Recommended Products: Predator® belt drive systems,

molded notch V-belts, PowerGrip® GT®2

Environmental Issue: Contamination

• Hose/Hydraulics

o Issues: unsanitary environment due to contaminants; product damage

o Solutions:

• Flush with chemically compatible fluid

• Blow out contaminants with shop air

• Utilize a cleaning projectile, like a sponge or pellet

o Recommended Products: MegaClean™ system

Environmental Issue: Contamination

• Belting

o Issues: frequent wash down to meet sanitary requirements;

product damage; incompatibility with industry standards (food

safety standards for example)

o Solutions:

• Replace with easy-to-clean, joint-free components

designed for the food and beverage industry

• Reduced maintenance through ability to clean in place

o Recommended Products: Gates Mectrol PosiClean® food grade

belting

Gates Mectrol PosiClean® food grade belting

Environmental Issue: Fluid Incompatibility

• Hose/Hydraulics

o Issues: unsanitary environment due to contaminants; product damage

o Solutions:

• Select hose compatible with the fluid being transferred

• Check chemical resistance charts for compatibility with materials,

couplings, and O-rings

o Recommended Products: MegaSys® spiral wire and wire braid hoses, Stallion®

and Mustang® acid-chemical hoses

Environmental Issue: Exposure to Fluids

• Belts

o Issues: solvents or oils can create rubber belt swelling or

stickiness

• Fluid contaminants can degrade material integrity and

belt strength, resulting in delamination

o Solutions:

• Review current drive guard and brainstorm methods to

further minimize belt drive exposure to contaminants

• Select a degradation-resistant belt

o Recommended Products: Poly Chain® GT® Carbon™ belt

system

Environmental Issue: High Pressure

• Hose/Hydraulics

o Issues: leaks, bursts, coupling blowoffs and whipping hose can lead to safety

hazards and environmental contamination

o Solutions:

• Make sure the working pressure of the hose is greater or equal than

maximum system pressure

• Use a sleeving system or hose cover to contain bursts and leaks

o Recommended Products: M-XP™ Million-Impulse Cycle hose, spiral wire

hydraulic hose, LifeGuard® line-of-sight sleeving, MegaSys® constant pressure

hoses

Environmental Issue: Hazardous Environments

• Belts

o Issues: static electricity or highly charged environments are a fire hazard

o Solutions:

• Clean debris and contaminants and ground systems properly

• Use a static-conductive belt line

• Bleed off residual static buildup with a static-conductive brush

o Recommended Products: Super HC, Hi-Power II, and Tri-Power V-belts; 8mm

and 14mm PowerGrip GT2 synchronous belts

Be Proactive in Harsh Environments

• Ensure optimal production and minimal

maintenance by proactively choosing

products and solutions that can

withstand your challenging

circumstances.

• With the right design, most appropriate

products and a thorough maintenance

regimen, you can be sure your

equipment will run smoothly long-term.
