Our friendly and professional staff work closely with people to help them:

• co-create a personalised support package that’s right for them

• build confidence and resilience • live happy and independent lives.

We have a proven track record of working successfully in partnership with others, including families and carers, to deliver positive outcomes for people who need support. With 25 years’ experience in providing care and support, we currently provide 17 different services across 38 bases in six different local authority areas.

We also work with young people, older people and individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

In this brochure, we look at how Loretto Care, part of Wheatley Group, works with individuals to design their personalised service.

We pride ourselves on providing flexible services, co-created with each individual – and that’s what Personalisation and Self-Directed Support (SDS) is all about.

Welcome to Loretto Care

The introduction of Self-Directed Support, which enables individuals to direct their own outcome-focused support packages, fits perfectly with our own ethos of maximising choice and control for the people we work for.

We support people to get the most out of their personalised service. We build a positive, empowering framework so that individuals have control of their own personalised support and achieve their outcomes.

You can find out much more about Self-Directed Support and Loretto Care in this brochure – including hearing directly from some of the people we work for about their successful journey through working with us.

The people we work for includes those with: • learning disabilities • addictions • mental health issues • alcohol-related brain damage.

Sue oversees our Self-Directed Support Services, including looking after our dedicated and professional staff. Sue’s main focus is ensuring each individual service is designed around individual people’s outcomes and life aspirations and that support is provided in a way that fits with their lifestyle. As a member of the Care Management team, Sue is also involved in developing new care and support opportunities, in line with the strategic objectives of the business.

Sue currently manages personalised Housing Support and Care at Home Services to a range of people with additional support needs across North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Falkirk and Grangemouth. Sue has worked in a variety of social care management posts at Loretto since 1993. Prior to this Sue worked as a registered nurse in Lanarkshire.

You choose a direct payment and you arrange and pay for your support.

You are in control and choose who you want to provide your support. A third party (which may be your local authority, organisation or brokerage service) holds your budget.

You tell the local authority to find and arrange support that they feel is most suitable for you. You still have the final say on who provides your support.

You arrange your support using a mix of options.

It comes from the Social Care (Self-Directed Support) (Scotland) Act 2013. This law was made to make sure people who need help and support can choose support that suits them and make decisions about their own lives.

With Self-Directed Support you have much more choice and control over what support you receive, how you organise this support and who provides it.

Most of the people we work for who have moved to Self-Directed Support have chosen Option 2. This is where you tell the local authority who you want to provide the support. This means your personal budget is mostly paid to Loretto Care – and we support you with what you want to do.

You DIRECT the support but don’t have to worry about the management side of things.

What is Self-Directed Support? With Self-Directed Support you get a choice of four options.

It’s like the council’s given us money. I give it to Loretto. I get helped by two staff. I go out and about in my car too. On Thursday I went to the pictures and shopping. Last year I went on holiday to Blackpool. Sometimes I go to that Dobbies shop for my gardening stuff. I go to Fred Paton (day centre) Monday, Tuesday and Friday. I would say I like my flat very much and I like all the support I get.

I get support to do all sorts – going for my shopping and things like that, gardening, holidays and different things. I love gardening, being outside. I’m what you call a gardening expert. I’m holding some of my support back the now to save it for a holiday. I choose what I want to do and when. I’m in charge. I’m the boss. I tell the staff the way I want things done. I started to drink alcohol at

an early age. I then went on to smoking hash and sniffing glue. I took the decision to jump off a bridge and hoped this would get me help. Now my life is so different with Self-Directed Support and Loretto. I now have a purpose and each day I am doing something different. I go swimming every week and go and play snooker with my support staff. I have been away lots of holidays over the past few years. Where I have come from to where I am now makes me feel good about myself. I am very proud of what I have achieved and without the support from Loretto, and me making changes in my life, I don’t know how things would have turned out.

Here we hear from some of the people using their Self-Directed Support with Loretto Care.

I’ve been volunteering at the hospice quite a while. I just tidy up the shelves for them. I got help to get into that. I also used my support to get into college. I’ve done courses on community, volunteering, cookery and a bit of first aid too. I’ve been on holiday with staff too. I’ve been to Amsterdam, Ireland, Blackpool and am going on a cruise this year. I’ve been on four cruises since I’ve been here. My support to get up and organised in the morning is really important.

I was in the jail for two to three years. When I got home, I just went and carried on from where I was before I got the jail. But Loretto, they taught me things, how to cope with voices, to speak out a lot more, because I was really, really quite withdrawn into myself. They were coming over. At first it was like five to six times a day. We’d sit and have wee chats and that, slowly building bridges. From then to right now, I’ve always smiled when I hear that word Loretto. See if they had more people, and more places like Loretto, it wouldn’t be such a bad place coming out of jail or coming out of hospital. The help you get, the understanding you get. I can’t put into words what these people have done for me.

Since Self-Directed Support has been introduced this allows me to use part of my support budget and book trips away with David Urquhart tours. This is very important to me as I like the outdoors and enjoy buying gifts for my family. This is over and above from my daily support. My support worker will keep a record of what hours I use. Loretto Care has given me the confidence in myself and enabled me to live life to the full. I deal with my own finances, but if I get any letters from the bank that I am unsure about, or any letters in general, I know I can ask Loretto staff for advice. My life is now very structured.

Loretto Care Self-Directed Support

Even though you might not have a Self-Directed Support budget yet, lots of you are making the most of your support with Loretto Care to achieve the things you want to achieve.

Here we hear from some people who wanted to share their stories.

Scott digs in for his community Scott wanted to engage more with his service and the community. His local Personalisation and Participation Ambassador (PPA) helped him get involved in Glasgow City Council’s Clean Glasgow campaign.

If you are interested and want to find out how you can get involved in your local area then phone 0141 276 7559 or send them an [email protected]

Flower powerGreen-fingered people from our services in one Glasgow community have joined forces with their neighbours to launch a garden project.

Residents at our Barmulloch Personalised and Self-Directed Support service, pictured bottom right, set up a tenant group with people from Loretto Housing homes nearby. Their first priority was to set up a community garden complete with raised flower beds and vegetable patches. They are being supported by the Loretto staff team at Barmulloch and the community governance team at Wheatley Group – Loretto’s parent organisation. They have linked in with another community gardening group at Sandyhills who are sharing their top tips.

Not everyone has a Self-Directed Support budget yet. This is because local authorities are approaching it differently and are at different stages of rolling it out.

Scott said: “I do things to keep me occupied. Keeps my mind off the drink. I like going outside in the garden. I play dominos and table tennis.

“I saw somebody out litter picking and thought I want to do that. I went up and spoke to them and they told me where their office is. I got my worker to go down with me and sorted it out. Now I’ve started doing my litter picking round the streets with Clean Glasgow. I wanted to keep myself occupied and keep Glasgow clean. I want to look after it. This is where I come from.”

Joe said: “The garden will give us something to work on over the summer and will be a good motivation for us. It will help people take their minds off things for a couple of hours. We hope to grow daffodils, tulips, carrots and potatoes among other things. It’s good to get people out into the fresh air.”

Marie said: “I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting people and getting some exercise.”

Learning about keeping well Personalisation and Participation Ambassador Andrew Sommerville accompanied a few people along to Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) training, run by See Me and Now You’re Talking.

This course is all about taking and retaining control of your own wellness and recovery. It is about having a voice and a choice even when you are at crisis point and are unable to voice your own wellness and recovery needs. You are the expert on your own recovery and wellbeing and this tool promotes that. WRAP is an excellent tool for not just people with mental health illnesses but for anyone managing their own wellbeing.

Peer support Robert decided to attend a mental health awareness day at the Mill Road project in Hamilton after having a discussion with Andrew.

There is always a lot going on at our services all over Scotland and we want to hear about it so we can share it with others. Sharing your stories might give others ideas of what they can arrange and attend in their own areas. Please get in touch and tell us more about what you have achieved or taken part in. Our contact details are on the back page.

There have been lots of opportunities for you to participate in your support and in our services. Participation is a key feature of Self-Directed Support. You have the right to shape your services and we will provide you with the information to make informed choices.

We support you to arrange and take part in meaningful activities, group events and get out into the community. We always listen to your feedback so we can keep improving these opportunities for you.

Recently the people we work for – from Falkirk and Grangemouth to Castlemilk, Barmulloch and Tollcross in Glasgow – have also been involved in

focus groups to review our key aims at Loretto. At our Falkirk and Grangemouth services, people suggested quality, safe, happy services that were non-judgemental and person-centred were important. Respect and equality were also themes. One participant, Ian, enjoyed being part of the focus group. He said:

We’ve also been reviewing our participation strategy – working together with some of the people we work for. A focus group was held to hear what people at our Falkirk and Grangemouth services thought should go in the strategy. They said participation helped make them feel in control – and they talked about ways they wanted to participate like regular meetings, designing their support plan, having suggestion boxes and being able to choose their staff. We are going to develop similar groups in our other services.

“I have learned a fair bit about myself over the last two days” and “I could relate to the course and share my experiences with others.”

“Positive things will happen because of it. It gave me an incentive to do things.”

Robert said: “I decided to talk about my life story and try and educate others. I have always wanted to do a talk to try and make young people aware of the things in life I wished I hadn’t done. I’d encourage them not to go down the road that I did.”

Loretto Care Self-Directed Support

Self-Directed Support is not only about being able to choose what organisations provide your support – but also influencing which staff your organisation employs to work for you. We held a number of events and one-to-one sessions enabling you to influence which staff Loretto Care employs. During these events you told us about the qualities you wanted staff to have; thought of interview questions that would help you find out what you wanted to know about staff; and had discussions on the rules around employing someone, discrimination and what is important to you in an ideal staff member.

Together we were able to identify the things that matter to you and employ professional and caring staff based on your person specifications. Existing staff were able to identify the qualities you think are important and make some positive changes. The next step is providing training on building your skills so you are confident to sit on an interview panel and ask the questions that matter to you.

The Care Inspectorate has recognised the work of the PPAs. As a result, we have developed the post to increase their numbers and remit. Check out below some comments from the Care Inspectorate. If you would like to read a full report you can contact a service directly or search for a service on the Care Inspectorate website www.thecareinspectorate.com

The people we work for are equal partners in designing, creating, reviewing and shaping their service and support. Together we identify the abilities and resources and build on those foundations. We call this close partnership working Co-Creation.

We invited people who receive support from Loretto to focus groups or one-to-one sessions to share their thoughts and ideas about Co-Creation. These focus groups were held in lots of Loretto Care services so we could find out the opinions of as many people as we could. We also spoke to staff to find out what they thought about Co-Creation.

All the feedback we gathered about Co-Creation helped influence Wheatley Group’s draft approach to Self-Directed Support and Personalisation.

We shared the draft at lots of our services and your views and ideas will now shape the final approach – and an easy-read version.

“It’s good having control and making decisions because staff won’t be with me all my life. I feel a lot more confident now.”

“Co-Creation is good, makes you feel decent that you are not here just to make up the numbers.”

“It’s important to be involved in the decisions that affect your own life. It makes you feel valued and gives you more confidence.”

“I love it. I like taking part, going to the events, hiring new staff and making decisions.”

“The service has strong service user and carer participation systems. This means that there are a range of ways in which service users and carers can have their views about the quality of the service heard…”

“The organisation had employed a participation and personalisation ambassador who had been round different services, meeting service users and asking them in what ways they wanted to be involved.”

“…each service user could have their views heard about what they would like to do…”

“The personalisation and participation ambassadors within the organisation were promoting service user involvement in areas such as policy development and recruitment. We received very positive feedback about the quality of the service from social workers and health professionals whom we contacted…”

Loretto created the post of Personalisation and Participation Ambassador (PPA) in 2013 to support the introduction of SDS and embed personalisation. This post has developed and Loretto has now created the Community Engagement and Activities Team. This incorporates the previous post of Personalisation and Participation Ambassadors and Activity Coordinators.

The Community Engagement and Activities Team will be responsible for a more coordinated and structured approach to meaningful participation and community engagement. This is to ensure that every person Loretto works with has the opportunity to get as involved as they want in shaping their support, their service and the organisation.

This team will complement the work of support staff to ensure the people we work for get the most out of their SDS budgets and personalised service. Loretto works with people to help them become active members of their communities.

We will also develop our training plan to offer a wide range of training for the people we work for to build skills and capacity. We will create opportunities for the people we work for to train our staff on how best to support them by sharing their experiences.

Get in touch with the Community Engagement and Activities Lead to find out more about your local Community Engagement and Activities Coordinator and how you can get more involved.

Could you be a leader? Step Into Leadership is a project to support Citizen Leadership which is all about taking control of your own life or supporting others to take control of theirs. Developing leadership skills can help you and others in lots of ways.

Step Into Leadership is an interactive online resource designed and hosted by the Scottish Social Services Council. There are links to videos and written resources that cover all the different aspects of being a citizen leader. There are also examples and stories. You’ll find information packs designed to help you take control, links to self-help resources to enable you to manage your health condition on your terms; and quizzes that help you discover what skills and strengths you have that will help you as a leader. You will also find links to lots of different organisations and groups that you might be interested in. To find out more, go to www.stepintoleadership.info

Get involved in your community Another great online resource can be found at ALISS.org This website allows you to search for resources, groups, clubs, events, activities, health and social care services out in the community. You can search by what you are interested in, your post code, street name or general area.

The website then brings up a list of results reflecting the information you need. For example, if you are interested in music groups in Maryhill, you search Music, set the area as Maryhill, click search and see what pops up.

Citizen Leadership can be:• actively making decisions about

your life• encouraging others to speak

up about their support needs and be part of making decisions about their lives

• influencing change by getting involved in staff training, asking questions about how and why things are done and making suggestions about how they could be done better

• getting involved in groups to influence local and national policy or helping others to have the confidence to do this.
