Rebuildingthe Kampung Spirit

sembawang town council June14

The future of Sembawang Town is taking shape right before our very eyes. Earlier in April, we had a groundbreaking ceremony

for Singapore’s first integrated building. Located just next to Admiralty MRT station, Kampung Admiralty is designed to bring back the kampung spirit of yesteryear. There are studio apartments, community plaza, roof garden, food centre, shops and medical facilities to evoke the “gotong royong” (mutual help) way of life, bringing benefits to everyone.

We unveiled ACE the Place Community Club in March to celebrate the opening of yet another club where we can enjoy favourite recreational activities together with our families and friends. Our Sembawang Town is known for our strong community bonding, and it is this cohesiveness that helped us raise nearly $6,000 for charity through the sale of locally grown vegetables during the recent Sembawang GRC Community Garden Festival-cum-Sports Day.

In a courageous display of neighbourliness, Marsiling resident Ms Zhu ran up eight floors to save her elderly neighbour when a fire broke out at their block. We give our thanks for her kindness and bravery.

Thankfully, there were no serious casualties caused by the fire, but let us remind ourselves to always observe fire safety habits at all times. Remember, obstructions in the corridor and other common areas pose a danger during emergencies. Should you or a neighbour need help to dispose of bulky household items, remember to call the Town Council at 6368 3100 for assistance.

As we move into the second half of 2014, let us continue to strive to build bonds with each other and bring up the good old kampung spirit in our Sembawang Town.

Daerah Majlis Bandaran Sembawang kita sedang mengalami satu perubahan yang pesat. Ini dapat disaksikan di hadapan

mata kita sendiri.

Rebuilding The Kampung SpiRiTBack to the good old kampung days! We gathered to celebrate the ground breaking for a new integrated building at Admiralty.

With the pull of a lever, Minister of National Development Mr Khaw Boon Wan symbolically broke ground for an upcoming integrated building that promises to bring back the good old kampung spirit.

Located just next to Admiralty MRT station, “Kampung Admiralty” will be a one-stop hub, encouraging social interaction and active living through communal spaces and facilities. We can expect our new community-living-friendly block to be completed in 2017.

Together with hundreds of people, we joined the specially held groundbreaking ceremony on 26 April to get a better glimpse of the new facility. There will be something for everyone at the integrated building. Separated into three tiers, the development will house retail outlets and a community plaza on the ground, with a hawker centre and medical facilities in the middle. Studio apartments, elder and childcare facilities, and a community park make up the top tier.

Fellow Admiralty resident, Mr Kamal Kadir, said: “Having a medical centre and childcare facilities in one location will make it convenient for me to go for check-ups and send my grandchildren to day-care when the building is complete.”

We’re excited to see the new communal spaces such as the plaza and the community park, which stand to be the focal points of the new kampung. The plaza on the ground floor will host activities and programmes. The park will have fruit trees and a community farm where we can plant herbs and vegetables, much like the many community gardens dotting our town.

Apart from a showcase of the future facilities, our young residents entertained us with dance and music performances. Ketupat weaving booths, and kacang putih and potong ice-cream stalls brought a sense of nostalgia to us at the event.

With all these facilities and communal spaces in one spot, we hope it will grow into a bustling and vibrant kampung – embodying all the best things we remember one to be.

A New Place for that Ace Weekend!

A brand new four-storey community club is in our midst! ACE the Place Community Club (CC) opened its doors on 2 March 2014 to the delight of eager residents keen to get a glimpse of what the new CC has to offer.

Located at 120 Woodlands Ave 1, ACE is furbished with facilities like an indoor water playground, a wellness room, dance studios, music studios and even a 24-hour gym. Previously, the CC was located at the void deck of a HDB flat; this new centre is approximately eight times bigger than the previous compound, better meeting residents’ lifestyle and recreational needs.

Officiating the opening ceremony, guest-of-honor Mr Khaw Boon Wan said that the facilities now better reflect the needs and aspirations of the residents. He added that “the basis of forming community centres remains the same, which is to build a place for people to bond, to bring residents together to socialise, learn a skill, learn a hobby, engage in leisure activities and, more importantly, forge a sense of community.”

ACE, which is an acronym for Admiralty’s Community Experience, aims to foster family ties through the provision of programmes and space to forge lasting experiences and memories together. The new CC is expected to serve about 52,000 Admiralty residents.

Welcome Party for residents

June 2014 7

We had a wonderful time at the welcome party organised by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) on 7 May for residents of Treegrove@Woodlands. With 150 of us at the event, we were there to help make the new residents feel at home.

As a way of getting to know our new neighbours and make new friends, the day started with a community potluck and reception. Some of us were approached to prepare delicious local dishes like bee hoon and dumplings for our fellow neighbours to enjoy.

“It is a great way to get to know your neighbours”, said Madam Wang and Madam Tan, who had only just met that morning.

With game booths and children running around, the atmosphere was a festive one. We played games like “Find it With Your Neighbour” and participated in the “Friends Next Door” photo contest. We also got

to enjoy performances by Woodlands Zone 4 RC Dance-fit Club and Children’s Indian dance, Suzie Wong, and The J Show.

Guest-of-honour Ms Ellen Lee mingled with the crowd and also us in our community potluck. She encouraged new residents to enjoy their neighbourhood facilities like the Woodlands Galaxy CC, and informed them that there are many improvement works to look forward to, such as covered walkways that will be added in time. New residents Mr and Mrs Kong got their keys in December of 2013 and had their renovations done just in time to invite their relatives over for Chinese New Year. When asked if they enjoyed their new flat, both responded with a hearty “Yes”. “We love the location and the friendly neighbourhood atmosphere,” said the happy couple.

A FABulous TimeResidents of Sembawang Zone J got to know each other better over a Familiarisation and Bonding (FAB) party organised by the HDB on 17 May.

The cordial event began with an engaging storytelling session which revolved around the theme of being good neighbours. For the 40 children present, they had a good time participating in the story-telling while learning the importance of community spirit. During the evening, we were also treated to popcorn and other complimentary snacks, while enjoying the various interactive booths set up to deliver educational messages such as window safety and dengue prevention.

A colouring contest and photo frame decorating workshop kept the young ones thoroughly entertained. Mr Khaw Boon also dropped by and took the time to personally greet and interact with us, ultimately posing for a group photo with the participants of the Heartland Familiarisation Tour upon their return. With fire-eating performances and lucky draws, our attention never strayed. It was a fulfilling day getting to know our neighbours better, and we look forward to growing stronger bonds with them!

of Treegrove@WoodlandsA New Place for that Ace Weekend!

The five community gardens within the Sembawang Group Representative Constituency (GRC) have outdone themselves. Contributing over 250kg of their vegetables to the first-ever farmer’s market held at Republic Polytechnic, the groups managed to sell their harvest and raise a stellar $5,900 for Man Fut Tong Nursing Home.

The farmers’ market for our community gardens was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Sembawang Sports Festival held on 6 April, which saw over 2,000 participants and visitors throughout the day. We had our pick from the diverse selection of vegetables on sale: from kalian, lettuce, corn, brinjal to herbs and spices. The resident farmers even let us pay the amount of money we deemed reasonable. Many of us who are particular about the use of pesticides and herbicides were also happy to know no such substances were used on their crops.

Amongst the five participating groups was the Marsiling PAP Community Foundation (Block 32). Their vegetables were grown with love and effort by the adorable pre-schoolers, their parents and their teachers in their

school’s little garden. Early that morning, we even saw the children and their teachers diligently stacking their

pots of produce. Later on, the stalls were graced by Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Ms Ellen Lee, Mr Vikram Nair and Mr Ong Teng Koon. They were delighted at how fresh the vegetables were, and were pleased with how the community garden initiative has helped charity.

Ms Salbiah Osman of Woodlands Zone 2, a Community in Bloom (CIB) ambassador, said: “Such activities increase the community’s love for gardening! It has also allowed me to get to know my neighbours better.”

Apart from the successful farmer’s market, the festival was also filled with many high-energy sporting

activities. We first warmed up with the 1.6km brisk walk, and later turned up the

heat with the mass Zumba dance. Apart from watching the tournaments

taking place that day, residents who attended also got to enjoy and win prizes from the many game booths.

COMMUNITY IN BLOOM

On 15 March, dozens of grassroots volunteers went with Ms Ellen Leeon a cleanup around Woodlands. After gathering in the morning at the Woodlands CC, we made half a dozen stops across the neighbourhood, meeting resident volunteers at each one. Everyone put their backs into their tasks, combining their efforts with those of the roving band of cleaners to get their sites sparkling clean.

Litter was picked up, floors swept and drains unclogged. The dry spell at the time had several drains filled to the brim with dead leaves. Ms Lee also pointed out the thick clumps of dead vegetation that were fire hazards, and set to work clearing them.

When the cleanup was finally complete, everyone made their way back to the Woodlands CC. We all posed for a big group picture on the roof to commemorate how far a little community spirit can bring us when it comes to keeping Woodlands clean and green!

GOOD NEIGHBOURS CAN SAVE LIVESBorn of simple care and concern for her elderly neighbour, Ms Zhu’s remarkable act helped to save lives when a fire struck.

Ms Zhu Yu Ling, 37, redefines what it means to be a good neighbour. Instead of running for safety when a fire enveloped her block in choking black smoke on 4 April, the resident of Block 29 Marsiling Drive ran up eight stories to rescue her elderly neighbour..

When Ms Zhu first noticed the thick smoke, she went to the police station to alert them of the danger. Despite being told that the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has already been notified, she still felt uneasy and worried for her 80-year-old neighbour, Mdm Seet, who had trouble walking.

Worried for her neighbour, she rushed back up with the intention of finding the old woman and helping her to safety. Knocking vigorously on the door, she unfortunately did not receive any response from Mdm Seet, who was accompanied only by her foreign domestic worker who lived with her. Just then, the SCDF arrived to break down the door. Still, Ms Zhu’s attempts to help her neighbours did not stop there; she dashed upstairs to tell the others to evacuate.

Thanks to Ms Zhu’s initiative, no one was hurt in the crisis.

Ms Zhu, who showed compassion and courage in the face of emergency, demonstrated the value of being alert and ready to help in times of needs. Let us be proud of her selflessness, and allow her actions to inspire us to be civic conscious neighbours ourselves; to be aware of our community and the role we play in it.

Home fires are an ever present danger. Help protect you and your loved ones with some Fire Safety Tips on the right!

Witnessed a similarly inspiring act of courage and good neighbourliness, or know someone who did? Hearttalk wants to know all about it! Write in to us with your experience at [email protected] (subject: my good neighbour) and your story may just appear in future Hearttalk issues!

Don’t call me a hero. I don’t think of myself as that because I’m just doing my job as a neigbour. After all, we live in the same block and I believe we should look out for each other. I feel happy helping others, and really expect nothing in return.

- Alicia, 11, daughter of Ms Zhu

I thought she was very brave. My mum is a good neighbour, and I think good neighbours are those who will trust and help each other like they’re one big family.

Pioneer PAckAge - exPLAined! The Pioneer Generation (PG) package that was announced in February this year seeks to pay tribute to a special group of Singaporeans for their contributions during the early days of nation-building. An estimated 450,000 Singaporeans is expected to benefit from this package.

In an effort to promote the awareness of the Package, as well as to reach out to more senior citizens and their families, various Grassroots Organisations have been planning public education programmes to explain the extra financial support available for their healthcare needs.

Near us, the Marsiling Citizens’ Consultative Committee also stepped up and recently organised a coffee session on 20 April where volunteers were present to interact with and educate the elderly residents about the package.

While a number of us may not qualify for the assistance ourselves, we have elderly parents or relatives around us who will potentially benefit from the scheme, and whom may need our help in explaining it to them.

To assist you in understanding the Pioneer Package, here’s a handy infographic that summarises the key benefits. For more information, visit http://www.cpf.gov.sg/pioneers/pg.asp
