Hannah Ossoff (AUK) went on an adventure with her friends to Hobbiton and the Waitomo Caves...

    Awesome Breaks

T he glowworms of the WaitomoCaves are not actually worms. But, as our guide informed us,advertising the glowing wasteproduct of maggots does not garnernearly as much interest. And yet thatis in fact what those lights on thecave ceiling are.

Last weekend, that of July 26th

and 27th, a group of us tooka trip to Matamata, home of theHobbiton movie set, and thenheaded over to Waitomo to tourthe caves. Hobbiton was quite theexperience. We were led throughthe various hobbit holes, which wereeven smaller than they appear in themovies, and then treated to drinksat the Green Dragon, the Hobbitonpub. As for the glowworms, wetook the rafting tour, which involved

oating on tiny inner tubes throughvery chilly water. For me, at least, the worst part was squirming into astill wet and quite cold wetsuit. But

overall the caves were an incredibleexperience, and one that we allhighly recommend. The hot showerand soup provided at the end arenttoo bad either.

A Brief History of Barely Anything that we got up to in Brazil....

UOT SSC Josh Quinn: I left forBrazil with three of my best matesat my side: a peppy wee Burmeseboy with a striking resemblance to

Pharrell Williams; a tall blonde whowas simply fascinating to the darkhaired, brown eyed Brazilians and alanky white boy often confused forNovak Djokovic. It was with thesethree that I attended five WorldCup, one of which Ill tell you aboutnow.

Mexico vs Cameroon was in Natal,a city named Christmas whichis famous for its dry climate. Wewoke early and went for a quick runthough the burbs. Ahead of our first

World Cup experience, there felta moist sensation of anticipationin the air, but no - it was just rain.

The locals along the way cou ldnot be more adamant the rainspersistence would subside beforethe 1pm kick off. Good news fora bunch of Kiwis who thought notto pack a jacket in place of roomto bring home a small internationaltrades worth of Havaianas.

It wasnt to be... by the time we left, the roads were flooded, forcing us

to walk an extra ankle deep 2km. Approxim ately 200m into the walk,

my trusty jandal gave way. Holdingit in one hand while walking was asight to be seen for the Cameroonfans who must have thought

our destitute looking group wasplanning to break into the stadium.Once inside, we immediately fell inlove with the atmosphere. It waslike nothing else. A very specialmoment and we found ourselveschanting along with theMexicans.

At hal f t ime we took t heopportunity to ring out ourshorts and singlets giving a twominute sensation of warmth.

Af ter the game, f ull of chocolate

(which was the only food inthe stadium) we retreated to

the warmth of a local bar to watchthe days other games. We askedour friends what we were chantingwith the Mexicans. Cameroon,

Cameroon your keepers motheris a . Lets just say she mayhave been a promiscuous lady and40,000 Mexicans seemed to knowthat.

NZ ExperienceChloe Revery (AUK) explains the intricacies of Frisbee, and how the sport in New Zealand is a very different beast....

Mission Bay: Chloe, Nicole, and I (along withseveral other students) spent a great afternoonat Mission Bay. We found an awesome Indian foodrestaurant that serves a 10 dollar main/naan/drink combo at lunch and had our first Movenpickexperience. It was an IFSA-Auckland date!

Potlucks: A few of us have been having weekly potlucks, giving us a chance to practice ourcooking and try other types of food. Optionsranged from Nicoles homemade pizza to Chaseschocolate covered bacon and hokey pokey icecream, but my personal favorite was Hannahs

    five-layer dip!

If there was one thing I thoughtwould be the same in Aucklandas it was in the States, it wasFrisbee. Ive been playing UltimateFrisbee for about a year on myhome college team, and while thedisc is the same, the sport is not. Here are some differences betweenUltimate at Auckland Uni and backin the States:

    1. The NESCAC collegeUltimate season is in the

spring, but tournaments andpractices run year-round. In winter,my team practices on a field ofsnow! In New Zealand, they aremore sane, preferring to split thesport into Indoor and OutdoorUltimate. Indoor Ultimate isplayed in the winter, and is lesscompetitive. Outdoor is played inspring and is less social.

    2. In Outdoor Ultimate, thefield is much smaller, as

we play on a basketball court.Because of this, the field can only

accommodate 4 players per team, instead of the 7 typical of OutdoorUltimate (and the kind Im used toplaying at home).

    3. Mixed teams (teams withboth men and women) are

far more prevalent here. Beforecoming to Auckland, Id neverplayed on a mixed team. Now,I play once a week on a mixedIndoor team. In about a month, when Outdoor Ultimate season

starts, Ill play outdoors (on areal field!) with a mixed team, too.

    4. Hattournaments, where

players can sign upindependent of a teamand play with randomlyassigned strangers, arevery popular in NewZealand, whereas theyre

just catching on in the US.

Im not surprised, since thehat tournaments here tend

to be in beautiful places like Lake Taupo.

If youre interested in playingFrisbee in NZ, its not too late to

join a team for the coming seaso n!Local pickups are common, too--Auckland has pickup games ina nearby park every Sunday, forexample.

Lucy De Souza reports back from some good times.....
