**** Total Hours Worked: 11.20 ***** Total Pounds of Canned Goods Collected: 751 *

Purpose of Event: To collect canned goods for the Flint Hills Breadbasket of Manhattan, Kansas in a competitive fashion with another organization to increase motivation to participate.

Description (Details of Event): The proposed event was in conjunction with Beta Sigma Chi Christian Sorority as a competitive canned food drive. The rules of the competition are as follows:

Each team will have 30 days to collect as many canned goods as they can from Manhattan area neighborhoods.Teams may not purchase canned goods to increase their totals. The Flint Hills Breadbasket will weigh the totals for each team after 30 days. The team with the most canned goods (decided by weight, not quantity) will be declared the winner.

The Stakes:

The losing team must cook, buy or some how provide dinner for the win-ning team. The winning team will be declared the 2006 Canned Food Drive Competi-tion Champion and will retain bragging rights for one year, until the next competition.

The Event: As the above timeline shows, participation started strong, but lapsed in the middle. Going door-to-door, with other Brothers to collect canned goods proved to be a fun time. Brothers met interesting characters and were even faced with some bigotry. The community was very receptive to our cause and, for the most part, welcomed us with opened armed.

Was the program successful? Why? Sigma Lambda Beta – Phi Chapter raised 501 pounds of canned goods, while

The Phi Chapter enjoyed a deli-

cious meal courtesy of the Ladies

of Beta Sigma Chi Christian So-

rority. Beta Sigma Chi was started

at K-State University in 2005 and

strives to promote Christian values

at K-State. They also just started

a Chapter at Kansas University.

More information about Beta

Sigma Chi can be found at their

Page 3: Semester Report: August - December 2007 Contentsful. Out of 11 “active” members, only 72% participated the first week, 18% the second week, 18% the third week and 36% the final

Beta Sigma Chi Christian Sorority raised only 250, making SLB the winner! As a result Sigma Lambda Beta – Phi Chapter won a free dinner from Beta Sigma Chi, but the real winners were the needy of Manhattan.

What could have been done to improve this program/event? Increased participation from the rest of the chapter would have been help-ful. Out of 11 “active” members, only 72% participated the first week, 18% the second week, 18% the third week and 36% the final week. As a Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta we should strive to have at least 86% of the Chapter participating in a month-long activity.

Likewise, once a week was the bare-minimum a Brother could go and that is what all of the Brothers did. Little initiative was taken by the Brothers who weren’t in charge and there were some Brothers of the Phi Chapter who did not participate at all.

Beta Cultural Awareness GameshowName of Event: Beta Cultural Awareness Game show Date: November 8, 2006 Location: K-State Union Courtyard Running Time: 45 minutes Presenter(s): Drew “Dragon” Leslie Brother(s) Present: Sammy Ornelas, Charles Dao, Bobby Gomez, Mike Luckett, Jose Uriel Es-trada, Tony Barrientos, Nonito Niebres, and three associate members. Attendance (Audience): 12 Purpose of Event: The game show was intended to educate the student body over the various cultures and customs. Description (Details of Event): The game was in two phases. Phase one being in the question and answer format and phase two the positive reinforcement stage. Four teams of two were asked trivia questions in a true or false manner. The questions were based on varying subject matters of different cultures and customs. Each team responded and was awarded two, one, or no points depending on the number of correct responses by each individual team member. At the end of phase one, the points of each team were added up. The team with the most point at the end of the first phase was given the privilege of choosing a posi-tive reinforcement for the other teams. There were several reinforcements; the following are examples and descriptions: “the chubby rabbit”, where the indi-vidual stuffed their mouths with marshmallows and said “chubby rabbit!”, and the “just desserts” where the winning team member made whip cream pies and smeared them in the losing teams face. The two phases were repeated in order to allow another team to gain more points and issue positive reinforce-ments. At the end the total number of points was added and the team with the most points was awarded a $10.00 gift certificate to Valentinos. The second place team was awarded a $5.00 gift certificate to Valentinos.

Interesting Phi PhactThe Beta Cultural Awareness Game-show was designed and implemented by one of our newest members in 2006 - Sammy Ornelas. Sammy went onto spear-head several community service events including Adopt-A-Family and “Bundle-Up” - a coat drive.

Was the program successful? The program was successful in the fact that it allowed the fraternity to show its diversity by educated the audience and contestants on various customs and traditions that were and are still practiced by various cultures. What could have been to improve this program/event? The program would have been better if the event would have been rehearsed in order to identify and rectify minor kinks and mistakes. It should have been better advertised in order to have more audience members.

Muse – A Multilingual Poetry ShowcaseName of Event: Muse – A Multilingual Poetry Showcase

Date: 11.15.2006

Purpose of Event: This event was designed to promote cultural awareness through showcasing poetry from different languages. It was our hope that people will find the beauty other of cultures through the common medium of spoken word.

Description (Details of Event): Students performed poetry from 7 different languages including, Chinese, Spanish, German, English, Maori and Filipino.

Was the program successful? Why? The event itself was successful as a poetry reading. There were about 20 people in the audience and we received media coverage from the college newspaper – the K-State Collegian. http://www.k-state.edu/slb-phi/images/poetrynesw.pdf Many of the audience members expressed their appreciation for the event and stated they were happy to see such events taking place at K-State.

What could have been done to improve this program/event? We had several performers cancel at the last minute and only a few Brothers actively aided in promoting the event. Though it is difficult to garner an au-dience for multicultural programming, we should have been able to get more than 20 people in the audience.

Adopt-A-FamilyName of Event: Adopt-a-Family

Date: 12.15.2006

Location: Manhattan, KS

Running Time: n/a – approx. 4 hours spent buying/wrapping gifts

Committee Head: Sammy Orenlas

Brother(s) Present: Drew Leslie, Sammy Orenlas, Charlie Dao and Ramiro Carreon

**** Total Hours Worked: 4*******Total Dollars Raised: $220****

Purpose of Event: To purchase and wrap gifts for two orphans and help give them a memo-rable Christmas.

Description (Details of Event): Various Brothers of the Phi Chapter donated a combined total of $220 to spend on gifts for two orphans: one 16-year-old female and one 15-year-old male. Brothers were given a wish list from the two orphans and purchased every-thing they could and more for these two deserving children. Gifts include K-State sweaters and shirts, jewelry, make-up, CD’s, gift cards to a local bookstore and a scooter helmet.

Was the program successful? Why? The program was successful in that the Phi Chapter was able, through the generous donation of time and money to give two children a very merry Christmas. Brothers of the Phi Chapter do not have a lot of expendable cash, so it was refreshing to see so much money go to those who need it most. We were able to give two children who do not have parents or loved ones in their lives a Christmas like every other child receives and show them that there are people in the world who care about them, even if only for one day.

What could have been done to improve this program/event? The program went exceptionally well.

FREE HUGS ManhattanName of Event: Free Hugs Manhattan Date: 12.10.2006 Location: Manhattan Town Center Running Time: 1 hour Committee Head: Mike Luckett

Page 7: Semester Report: August - December 2007 Contentsful. Out of 11 “active” members, only 72% participated the first week, 18% the second week, 18% the third week and 36% the final

The Free Hugs Campaign is an Internet meme that appears to have begun in 2004, and was widely publicized in 2006 by a music video. It involves individu-als who offer hugs to strangers in public settings. The campaign is an example of a random act of kindness, a selfless act performed by someone for the sole reason of making others feel better. The original organizer has stated in interviews that the purpose is not to get names, phone numbers, or dates. source: Wikipedia

Brother(s) Present: Drew Leslie, Mike Luckett, and Bobby Gomez

**** Total Hours Worked: 1***

Purpose of Event:To continue the “Free Hugs” movement in Manhattan, KS and spread some general goodwill and love during the holiday season.

Description (Details of Event): Bro. Mike Luckett viewed a video on youtube.com entitled “Free Hugs,” which took place in Australia. The video showed one man with a sign that said “Free Hugs” walking along a busy street. At first no one approached this man, but after a short time people began to hug him. The video circulated throughout the world and since “Free Hugs” videos have surfaced in Asia, Europe and the United States. Seeing the how this movement positively af-fected people all over the world, the Brothers of the Phi Chapter decided to bring this movement to Manhattan, KS. At first people at Manhattan Town Center were hesitant, but they quickly warmed to the idea and a few people even knew of the video that inspired us and embraced us. Unfortunately an hour into our “Free Hugs” campaign we were asked to stop by mall security. Being law-abiding gentlemen, we left without incident, much to the dismay of several mall shoppers. The Phi plans to continue the “Free Hugs” movement in Manhattan at other locations. A slide show of the event is available at the Phi’s website and http://www.slideroll.com/slideshows/members/personman01/show/free-hugs/

Was the program successful? Why? Seeing the laughter and smiles on the people we hugged proved, undeni-ably, that the event was a success. Especially around the holiday season, some people can get depressed and maybe a kind hug from a stranger will brighten their day. If we accomplished this humble task, then this event was a rousing success.

What could have been done to improve this program/event?The program went great, with the exception of mall security asking us to leave. In the future the Phi Chapter would like to procure a digital video camera to properly document our exploits.

Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc - pHuNkY Phi Chapter • 314 K-State Student Union • Manhattan, KS 66506

New Blood The Phi initiated three new members in December. The Mu Line: O.P.S.D.S.L.B. 39. Vern “Malakas” DeGuzman ([email protected]) 40. Jesus “Caballero” Garcia ([email protected]) 41. Miguel “Chiva” Viruete ([email protected])These three young men will surely do the Phi Chapter proud and represent our morals and values to the fullest extent. Their membership educator was Car-los “Maravilla” Rivera and was assisted by Charlie “Saigon” Dao and Sammy “Machete” Ornelas.

Brotherhood The Phi Chapter created weekly events for Brothers to participate in that did not involve the “typical” college scene. Each week Brothers would recom-mend potential Brotherhood Events and as a chapter they would decide what they would do. Events ranged from playing basketball, playing soccer, doing community service, attending events sponsored by the K-State Student Union, support-ing events put on by Sigma Lambda Gamma and Zeta Phi Beta sororities and playing HALO at the Chapter President’s house. These events were a great time and the Phi plans to continue these events next semester. Brothers also shared a potluck Thanksgiving dinner together at Clinton Donkers’ house. Along with this, the Phi Chapter was pleased to welcome Brothers from Phi Alpha, Delta Beta, Rho Beta and Mu Beta into thier home to meet and get to know their associate members.

Next Semester . . . The Phi Chapter has already begun planning events for Jan-May 2007. On Valentine’s Day the Phi Chapter will continue its annual Valentine’s Day Red Carnation Hand-Out - now in it’s fourth year. This event serves as a ges-ture of appreciation to the female students/faculty of K-State in recognition of their grace, intelligence and beauty they bring to K-State everyday. Around the same time the Phi Chapter is planning our 4th Charity Annual Date Auction. In the past three years we have raised a total of over $1,800 for various philanthropic causes and we hope to raise even more this coming semester. Past charities include the Ronald McDonald House, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and El Centro Inc. We will also continue our association with Wildcats Against Rape (W.A.R.) and hope to continue our work with them, whether it be handing out fliers, sup-porting their rallies or trying to educate other Greek organizations on campus.

Interesting Phi PhactAfter 5 long years at K-State University, Brother Drew “Dragon” Leslie finally graduated in December. Our congrad-ulations to our newest Alumni Brother. He joins Ivan “Chamorro” Tudela, Carl-ton “Nassor” Samules, Hamed “Deo-duce” Funmilayo and Samer “Valeroso” Hijazi as recent Phi Chapter grads.
