Kakrapar Gujarat Site, NPCIL has been persistently innovating upon its Public Awareness & outreach Programme with the objective of strengthening the systematic approach to these activities.

On the initiative and encouragement from Shri L. K. Jain, Site Director and guidance from Shri Sunil Kumar, Training Superintendent, Kakrapar Gujarat Site, it was decided to expand the area of Public Awareness in Gujarat. With the interaction to Dr. A. K. Patra sir Officer-in-Charge, Environmental Survey Laboratory-Kakrapar, on 6th oct 2015, A seminar on Nuclear Energy is organised at ADIT Campus.

The aim of the seminar is to draw the attention of student community towards Nuclear Power as Safe, economical, environmental & long term source of electrical energy. During the seminar various topics related to Nuclear Energy like necessity of nuclear power, Nuclear Power Plant operation, three stage nuclear power programmes of NPCIL, NPP safety systems and stringent safety provisions, comparison of waste generation in nuclear and thermal power plants, waste reprocessing and waste management were explained by the experts Shri G.C. Joshi and Shri D. P. Nankar, NPCIL, Gujarat Site. The details of Expert Scientists who came to conduct the workshop are as given below: Shri G C Joshi, Scientific Officer/F, joined NPCIL in 1988. After a brief stint of one & a half year at MAPS as a Trainee, he joined Kakrapar in Operation Group. Afterwards he joined Technical Services Section in the year 2000. As a Mechanical Engineer, he has a vast and rich experience of around 26 years in these areas. Recognizing his outstanding contribution, the Department conferred him Unit Level Recognition Award for outstanding Contribution in the area of “Condition Monitoring and Surveillance Testing” during the year 2001. Presently he is Technical Engineer (Conventional & ventilation) in KAPS-1&2 and is mainly responsible for performance Mr. D. P. Nankar had joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, in the year 1998. His main area of R&D work is on Environmental radioactivity dispersion and modeling around Kakrapar Site. He has been closely associated with Environmental monitoring activities for more than 15 years. In order to understand the environmental transport mechanism of radioactive pollutants, he had derived modeling parameters such as dilution factors, recirculation, stagnation and ventilation rate of the atmosphere, by measuring the different meteorological parameters such as wind speed, wind direction, atmospheric stability, temperature profile, humidity etc. He has many national and international research articles published in peer reviewed journals.

The seminar started around 1300 Hrs. and lasted upto 15:30 hrs and was attended by nearly 300 students & faculties of Electrical Engineering Department. There was overwhelming participation from students and college faculties. Questions regarding functioning of a Nuclear Power Station, Waste management, radiation safety etc. were asked and were answered by the faculties to the satisfaction.

All the students & faculties were highly appreciative of the facts and figures provided

and given their verbal feedbacks. An invitation from Kakrapar Gujarat Site was extended to all the participants and faculties to visit Kakrapar Gujarat site.

Feedback of participants

Both the sessions consisted of many facts and figures which are not

available in theory studies.

The seminar provides us essential knowledge and explored the wide

range of opportunities in the field of nuclear power and its role in nation

building.

Students were aware about radiation of NPP.

Understandable language and attractive presentation with actual photos

of NPP.

Future scenario of Nuclear and its need.
