  • Title: SemiquaversLevel: PreliminaryLearning Area: Rhythm Student Outcome:Students will be able to recall semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver and dotted minim and crotchet note and rest values and write and play them correctly in an 8 bar rhythm.

    Contents:Folder Cover Page Folder Divider Labels Student Record Page Game Pages Game Cards

    Extra Materials: Erasable/Whiteboard Markers10 dice

    To Create the Folder Games:Print the Game PagesPlace the Game Pages in plastic pockets and insert into your Preliminary Folder in order Print the Game CardsCut the Game Cards apart along the linesLaminate or cover the game cards as desiredPlace the game cards into the appropriate game page plastic pocket

    Instructions: Learn Pages 1 & 2: Colour the words, note, rest, one quarter of the circles and complete the bars. Wipe the Game Pages clean when completed.Remember Page: Complete the grid with the notes and rest symbols listed in Column 1.

    1. Player 1 rolls 2 dice and writes down their combined value somewhere in Column 1 on their Game Card. They complete Column 2 using any notes or rests to the value of the dice roll. No symbol may be used more than once.

    2. Player 2 repeats Step 1.3. Play continues until the Game Cards are completed.4. Players add up their total dice values.5. The winner is the player with the highest total score.6. Wipe the game page clean when completed.

    2. Write a 4/4 or a 3/4 time signature at the beginning of the bar.3. Complete the bar with any notes or rests. No symbol may be used more than once.4. Write in the counting below the bar.5. Count aloud as you clap, tap or play the rhythm.6. Wipe the Game Page clean and repeat Steps 1-3.

    1. Player 1 claps, taps or plays a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 bar rhythm made up from the rhythm barsshown on the Game Page played in any order.

    2. Player 2 points to the rhythm bars in the order that they were played.3. Players swap roles.

    Apply Game 2 - Roll It, Finish It, Play It

    Apply Game 4 - Roll It, Write It, Arrange It, Play It1. Roll 5 dice and write the notes or rests that correspond to the dice values onto a set of

    4/4 or 3/4 rhythm cards. Write the notes or rests in order or allocate them at random.2. Complete any incomplete bars with any notes or rests. Arrange the cards and play the

    rhythm on the piano. Wipe the Game Cards clean when completed.Game Variationsa. Gradually turn over one rhythm card at a time, from a completed set, and play the

    rhythm from memory.b. Create a melody and lyrics for the rhythm.c. Play the rhythm with a backing track.d. Player 1 claps or taps a selection of completed rhythm cards in a random order and

    Player 2 points to the rhythm cards in the order that they were "played".e. Roll 10 dice and write, arrange and play an 8 bar rhythm in 3/4 or 4/4 time.
