SPORTS AWARDS: 2015 SPORTS ASSEMBLY: STRATFORD HIGH SCHOOL 2015 On Tuesday 20 October we presented many of our annual sports awards in a separate celebration to the end of year prize giving. Awards were presented for Cricket, Cross Country, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Basketball.

Many students were also acknowledged for their achievements at regional and national tournaments and for recent representative selection in their sport this year.

Basketball: Marchant Trophy: Senior Boys Basketball MVP: Quintin Bailey Certificates of achievement were awarded to the following students. Greg Matthews - Pool – Winner of National “Pool for Schools” Tournament Jessica Taunt - Hockey – Stratford High Schools MVP for North Island Mixed Tournament Jackson Taylor - Hockey - Umpiring at Hatch Cup and National Age Group tournaments The SHS Senior Boys ‘A’ Basketball Team that recently attended Nationals were awarded with certificates for their 2nd placing. Quintin Bailey, and Cameron Trethewey were acknowledged for making the Tournament team at Basketball Nationals. Bailey Gavin was also selected from the SHS Girls A team for the girls Tournament team at Nationals in Palmerston North and received acknowledgement for this. Stratford High School Netball A received medals acknowledging their achievements throughout the year. They won their section at our Stratford Satellite, finished third at Taranaki Champs and at TSSSA Netball and placed 5th at the Lower North Island Secondary Schools Tournament. Emily Short was also selected for the Tournament team at the LNISS Tournament in Palmerston North in October.

Amess House Trophy: Girl Scoring Most Points For Amess: Jasmine Baker and Brooke Millar. Vesty Family Trophy: Amess House Spirit: Samuel Reardon. C.M. Sheehy Trophy: Girl Scoring Most Points for Trimble: Tamsin Burt Nominations for 2015 Sportswoman of the year included: Tamsin Burt, Bailey Gavin, Sarah Kowalewski and Emily Short but for her all-round ability in a range of sports, the SHS Interact Trophy goes to Katie Taylor Nominations for the Sportsman of the Year included: Nicholas Merson and Dylan Trott but for his all-round efforts and outstanding performances during 2015, The Clifford-Jones Memorial Trophy goes to Quinlin Bosson-Thompson

All of the sports people who have been mentioned were also considered for Sportsperson of the Year. The Sturmer Family Cup for Sportsperson of the Year is awarded to Quintin Bailey. The school Sports “Blues’ Awards are very important & to receive them the Sportsperson must meet the following criteria: 1. They must have shown above average ability in their chosen sport. 2. Where possible, they must have represented Stratford High school. 3. They must have shown above average qualities of leadership, sportsmanship & dedication both

Top Scholars 2015 The Roodbeen trophy is given to the best all round senior student who shows dedication and commitment to the general life of the school. This year’s recipient has been involved in a wide and varied range of activities. She has not always been the leader of these activities but you can guarantee that she was involved in some way. She was a Peer Supporter and a Peer Tutor. She was involved with the SADD group, Relay for Life and the 40 Hour Famine. She has taken part as a participant, helper or an organiser in school events such as the Ball, Stage Challenge, Lions Music Awards, and the Variety Concert. She has been involved in a wide variety of Interhouse, School, Interschool and TSSSA sporting activities such as cricket, football, athletics and triathlon to name a few. All of these have given this young woman a high profile both in and outside of the school. She is a conscientious young woman who has a great sense of social responsibility and has proven herself to be a person who, if there is a job to do she will get on and do it. She is certainly dedicated and committed to our school and has been a fine ambassador for Stratford High School and a worthy recipient of this award. The winner of the Roodbeen Trophy for 2015 is Sarah Kowalewski Harmoney Moffitt: receiving Diligence- English A and Chemistry; Distinction- Biology, 3rd= History and 1st Textiles Technology all at level 2. Harmoney is awarded ‘Te Kai Poutama Whetu’: top academic Maori Student in the senior school. Caitlin Reardon: receiving Distinction- Physics, 3rd= Mathematics, 2nd Chemistry, 1st Biology, 1st English A, and History; Caitlin is awarded the Cusack Cup for Academic Excellence: Year 12. Nicholas Hornby has gained: 3rd Maths with Calculus, 2nd Biology and Physics, 1st Chemistry and Geography. The final award that Nicholas receives is the Sextus Family Trophy for Proxime Accessit 2015. Kody Simpson has gained 1st in Accounting, Biology, Physics and Statistics and Modelling. He receives the H.C. Johnson Memorial Challenge Trophy for Senior Mathematics & Science. Kody has also been awarded a $50,000.00 University of Auckland Scholarship and he receives the 2015 Stratford High School Dux Medal presented by the SHS PTA.

Guest Speaker: Maggie Radich Maggie attended Stratford High School from 2004 to 2008 and she was appointed Head Girl in 2008. From Stratford she went to Otago University in 2009 where she studied science. In 2011 she was awarded a Bachelor of Science majoring in Human Nutrition. Continuing her studies she completed her Masters in 2013 with a Master of Dietetics. Following this in 2014 Maggie completed a Sports Dieticians course. She was employed in 2014 by the Taranaki Base Hospital as a clinical dietitian, where she still works.
