Politicians may love to kiss babies, but they bend over backwardfor those babies grandparents. InFlorida, and especially in Brevard, ahigh percentage of seniors wieldpower with legislators.
Its not just age, but severalcommon factors among the older
population that make them attractive to elected officials andpowerful in our community.
They register to vote in thelargest numbers, they show up onelection dayor mail in absenteeballotsin the greatest numbers, they educate themselves on the issues, they take action on issuesthat affect them, they have the time
to attend and be vocal at publicmeetings, according to a samplingof office-holders.
Seniors in Brevard County arevery active in our community andbring experience to issues that affect the citizens of our community, said Brevard County

321-757-9205 JUNE 2012 SENIOR LIFE 3
By george white
A small rockledge warehouse maybecome known as the birthplace of arevolutionary idea that changed the waythe world recharges batterieswithoutplugging in.
Infratechs original idea was to dotechnical assessments of infrastructure, but that idea has changed to somethingmuch bigger, according to Presidentand Ceo Allan riggs
riggs is a former submarine officerand his partner in the company, DennyGuignard, is a former Lockheed martinFlight test engineer.
the new power source is amagnesium-air fuel cell that uses saltwater to create energy that dissipatesover time.
the fuel is magnesium and thesurrounding media is salt water, so theresulting by-product is just like themedicine milk ofmagnesia, Guignardsaid.
the companysslogan is Needpower? Just addwater.
A total of sevenbattery chargerprototypes are in theworks for which wehave applied for eightpatents, Guignardsaid.
riggs expects theproducts will be ableto be marketedworldwide, soon.
Were at the end ofthe development stage.our first product willbe a five-ouncewearable charger, likeon your belt, that willcharge six AA batteries20 times, for $29.95,riggs said.
the biggest marketsfor the chargers areexpected to be inSouth America, haitior the middle east, places where there is
no power yet they still need batteries,he said.
the power units are also expected tobe used to power water purificationunits, where contaminated water, withjust a small amount of salt added, canbe used to create power to cleansehundreds of gallons of water.
riggs and Guignard also believe theunits will be perfect for use inpowerless areas following a majorhurricane, where most power lines are downed.
riggs said that his company hasfuture plans to create chargers for C-and D-size batteries and even a fuel cellthe size of a D-cell battery and a batterythat will be self-charging when saltwater is added.
But the real key to what weredoing is that the chargers are green andproduce no hazardous materialswhatsoever, riggs said.SL

Happy Anniversary to Senior Life! This month marks the 11th anniversary of Senior Life and just
like any 11-year-old; we know we have not fully reached our poten-tial, despite how much weve grown and how much weve learned. We have changed over the past 11 years and we know we couldnthave done it without your support and encouragement.
Youve probably noticed we have some new names in our familyof writers and photographers, but we still have many of the namesyouve come to recognize and trust. Lucy Kline has been a favoritecolumnist with Senior Life for many years and Mary Brotherton hasbeen writing features almost as long. Martha Masiello has also beenwith us several years.
More importantly are you, our readers. Some of you have beenreading Senior Life since the very first issue, 11 years ago. Sincethat time, youve seen how the paper has developed and grown.Youve watched us sponsor wonderful events and stand firm in ourcommitment to the community. Each month you have shown supportof the paper and helped guide us with your comments and sugges-tions. More importantly, almost every day, someone calls or emailsus to let us know how much Senior Life means to them.
We like to know that we are providing a service that is not onlyhelpful, but one that you appreciate. Thats the best anniversary giftyou could ever give us.
Have a magical May!Best regards, Jill Blue-Gaines

JUNE 2012 SENIOR LIFE 321-757-92054
By george white
Wood carver Judith Copelandof melbourne Beach knew shewanted to be an artist from anearly age but she didnt knowwhat form that art would take.
I used to draw and paintwhen I was little so I knew Iwould study fine arts in college.I went to Florida A&m andthats where I discovered sculp-
ture and working in wood, she said.
Working in wood to createsculpture is different than stonein many ways, some of whichhas to do with the variety ofbeautiful hardwoods native toFlorida, she said.
Copeland herself comes fromthe Sunshine State, spending herchildhood in Sarasota and livingin Tallahassee for many years.
Wood is way of life for melbourne Beach artist
Some of her favorite woods to work withinclude black walnut, cherry, orange, grape-fruit, avocado and sea grape. one of the mostrare woods shes worked with, with approvalfrom environmental officials, was button-wood mangrove.
Ive tried working in marble and bronzebut I felt like using wood. Its a once-livingobject and I just really like the slow processof it. Now I carve all of it with mallet andchisels, she said.
As for the shapes, Copeland said she goesinto each project with a visual concept ofwhat will come out the other side, rather thanstarting to carve without specific plans.
Usually I have ideas that Im waiting tocarve. I just look at the wood and the grain to
see if can be done, she said.Copeland said her pieces earlier in her
career were much bigger, but shes taking aslightly different approach now, creatingmuch smaller pieces that are easier for her tohandle.
She lives and works in melbourne Beachand enjoys displaying her work, including hermost recent show Into The Woods at theFifth Avenue Art Gallery, 1470 highlandAve., melbourne.
I wish I was making more money at it butmostly I just want to do what I want to do,she said.

JUNE 2012From TheEditor
one of the first things I learned, writing forSenior Life, is that people adjust to their life-changing events. many do so with grace andpoise. Like so many others before me, I find Imust modify my career plan. Through the pub-lishers generosity and understanding, I will con-tinue to edit remotely from South Carolina but I will no longer be the office manager. You see, I am going to be mymothers hANC. Im going to become her housekeeper, Activities director,Nutritionist and Companion. Shes reached that critical point in her life whereshe needs more help in her home and I am fortunate that I can provide it andstill remain connected to you through technology.
Although I wont be in the office, this isnt a farewell. Its just one moreadjustment to our aging society.

There are very few groups in Brevard County thatcan claim 50 years of continuous service, but themelbourne Beach Community Club can.
The 22-member group celebrated the April 22birthday with a catered lunch, according to clubpresident Pat Klein of melbourne.
We used to meet every week and our membershipwent way up in the 1960s when it was called themelbourne Beach homemakers extension Club. Weincluded members from the mainland all the way downto malabar, she said.
In 1991, the name was changed to the melbourneBeach Family and Community education Club and thegroup became part of the Brevard County and FloridaState Cooperative extension services and had countyand state representation. Council meetings, then, wereeducational meetings which covered many subjects, with each club within the council hosting a meeting.
our motto was teach what you know and learnwhat you dont know, Klein said.
Cultural arts was a big part of the council, whichheld an annual Cultural Arts Showcase held in variouslocations. The melbourne Beach club won manyribbons for their craftsmanship both at the local andstate level.
Upon withdrawal from the council in 2007, the clubtook on its current name and a greater role in supportingseveral organizations including: donating handmadehats for newborn babies at holmes regional medicalCenter in melbourne, donating winter hats for childrenbeing cared for through the moose heart program andcreating lap robes and holiday tray favors for residentsin local nursing homes.

District 4 Commissioner mary BolinLewis. The majority of our seniors exercise their right to vote on issuesimportant to us all in an effort to pro-tect the liberties their generation hasfought for over the years.
In Brevard, 169,347 registered voters46 percentare age 55 andolder. According to the US Census Bureau, 20.4 percent of Brevard residents are age 65 or older. AcrossFlorida, the percentage is 17.3, compared to 13 percent in the United States.
representing such a large con-stituency of senior citizens, and myselfjust hitting my senior years, said U.S.District 15 Congressman Bill Posey,65, issues affecting senior citizens areimportant to me. I work hard to ensurethat they have a voice in Washington.
Patrick Air Force Base and otherunique local factors have drawn notonly high numbers of retirees, but alsoretired veterans, according to Posey.
The number of voters turning 65changes daily and probably hourly,
said Brevard County Supervisor ofelections Lori Scott. A lot of our seniors may have life-altering issueslike stroke or a broken bone that keepthem from getting to the polls, and noteven that stops them. They mail in theirvotes, which we encourage.
Scott drives up the percentage ofolder voters by hosting voter registra-tion drives at assisted living facilitiesand distributing absentee ballots innursing homes.
Scott warned of an issue that maydrain power from senior voting. handwriting changes over time, andthus signatures change. If a signature atthe poll does not match the one on thevoters registration, it will be discarded, according to Scott.
We recently sent out more than50,000 voter registration cards to capture updated signatures and lessthan one percent were sent back, Scottsaid, adding that some people wereconfused and called in to say they werealready registered. We will do anothermailing soon, and we hope to educatefolks that we need them to fill out anew one every few years.

JUNE 2012 SENIOR LIFE 321-757-920510
By maria sonnenberghow does a Jewish boy from Boston,
a fellow who had never put on a pair ofskis, become a member of the famed10th mountain Division, a fearless groupof soldiers who skied around death during World War II?
Necessity, as they say, is the motherof invention. In the case of Army maj.George rosenfield, necessity was themom of skiing skills.
rosenfields father had served in therussian Army. For Jews in Czarist rus-sia, fighting for the Czar could make thedifference whether or not your familywas targeted in the next pogrom for extermination. The elder rosenfieldeventually left russia for the UnitedStates, joined the American Navy duringWorld War I and later became a mer-chant mariner. he met a nice Jewishrussian girl from New York and a newfamily was created.
In 1943, at the time rosenfieldreached draft age, the United States waslooking for outdoorsmen who were nim-ble in any terrain and could protect theircountry, should the Germans decide toinvade from Canada. Being able to getaround on skis was definitely in the jobdescription.
Before rosenfield was tapped to be aski trooper, his experience in the out-doors was limited to those of a boy scoutwho wanted to study forestry in college.
Very few people skied at that time, but as a boy scout, we went camping
monthly, regardless of weather, saidrosenfield.
Good enough, said Uncle Sam.It would be nice to say rosenfield
was a natural on skis. It would be nice, but not true.
my first day on skis was a disaster, said rosenfield, who was then assignedto kitchen duty at Camp hale, west ofDenver, until an exasperated squadronleader, on the eve of deployment, decided on intensive ski lessons for thenew recruit.
he told me he was going to teach meto ski in 20 minutes and he did, saidrosenfield, who made up for his slowstart by spending much of the war on skisin the unforgiving terrain of the NorthernApennines and the Southern Alps.
Close calls became part of doing business, but rosenfield seemed to havean inordinate amount of goodfortuneenough, in fact, that fellow sol-diers would sometimes walk directly inhis footsteps, hoping the good luckwould rub off on them.
After the war, rosenfield continuedhis dream of a forestry career, but whilethe GI Bill helped with the costs, it wasnt enough.
I needed the money, so I joined Advanced roTC, he said.
In 1949, with a degree from the University of massachusetts and a com-mission as second lieutenant, rosenfieldembarked on the rest of his life, whichincluded service as a cartographer for themilitary and as a photogrammetrist forrCA rockets at Cape Canaveral AirForce Station. The rosenfield Stripe onthe barrel on rockets was one of his contributions to missile tracking.
The forestry degree was helpful, butnot the way he had originally imagined.
I figured I would be counting treesand measuring crown diameter, but thatdidnt turn out to be the case, saidrosenfield.
Because he had been in combat dur-ing World War II, the Army tapped himto help as a combat engineer in Korea. These were the soldiers who builtbridgesand then blew them up oncethey were no longer needed. You couldsay rosenfield was the guy who turnedoff the light on the Korean conflict, forhe was the last Allied officer to leavethe North Korean capital of Pyongyangafter blowing up the last bridge.
These days, the nice Jewish boy livesin Suntree and still skis, although now atnicely appointed American ski resortsand not on the wild mountains of eu-ropes backbone. SL

JUNE 2012 SENIOR LIFE 321-757-920512
As people age, theybecome more prudent andreflect on the follies inlife. People who live along life are able to use aphilosophical approachwith their own balancedlife and reflect on theyears that have gone by.In old age, the famousSpanish artist FranciscoGoya saw the folly of clinging to oneslost youth. He expressed himself intimeless artworks covering all kinds ofdisorder and behaviors.
Men and women accept thechallenges of folly in different ways.Women have become aware of dangersand take action to prevent or protect.Men tend to deal with lack of foresightby using physical effort. Women tendto cope more in a spiritual way bypraying and developing a plan ofaction. Then there are all kinds ofcreams, medical procedures, pills, andhealth regiments that promote a longlife for men and women. Is this morefolly?
People who have lived a long lifehave seen the results of folly. In theirpersonal journey, they haveexperienced the results of the lack ofgood sense, foolish acts, and even evilin their life and that of others. Inmoney matters, marriage, parenting, personal struggles, illness and injury, they have built on their experiencebase to live a better life. Further, theyshare their wisdom with their childrenand grandchildren.
On the worldscene, they haveseen war andcruelty (mansinhumanity toman), miseries andnatural disasters, rebellion and riots, scams andcorruption, alongwith religious and
political battles. Whether they havehad first-hand experiences or learnedabout them from the newspaper ortelevision, they grow in wisdom orextend the folly.
There is the end game. What legacydo I leave? What form of wealth do Ishare and with whom? Do I give witha warm hand? Do I wait until I head tomy heavenly reward? Do I leave afinancial and legal mess for thefamily?
For the most part, people who live along life tend to be part of the solutionrather than part of the problem. Theyhave experienced success and failure. They looked for the lessons. They seeopportunities or defeat as choices, butlook for creative ways to benefit fromthe conditions they face. They connectwith the old adage, If it is to be; itsup to me.

This month, lets takea walking tour of thehistoric district of EauGallie and youll beintroduced to one of thefastest revitalizedcommunities inBrevard.
Start by visiting theEau Gallie librarylocated on Highland Avenue, just northof Eau Gallie Boulevard. This well-equipped library, with free computeruse for the library-card wielding public, enjoys a fantastic view of the IndianRiver Lagoon.
Behind the library, enjoy the newlybuilt Eau Gallie pier. On one side of thelibrary is the accommodating PineapplePark, a haven for all ages, and on theother side is the very popular restaurantSquid Lips. This interesting restaurantis located on the lagoon and it is wellworth going in and viewing the interior.
Go north on Pineapple and viewmany restored homes on both sides ofthe street. At Pineapple Avenue andLaw Street is the very attractiverestored lodging, the Pineapple Bed andBreakfast.
Walk one block west on Law, and atthe corner of Highland, are four veryinteresting buildings. Three of the one-story buildings have been completelyrestored. All three buildings were builtoriginally in the early 20th century.
The three-story brick building on thesoutheast side of the avenue was builtby the Gleason family in the early 20thcentury. It is now an apartment houseand is up for sale.
Now walk north onHighland and view themany restoredbuildings andchurches, all from the19th and early 20thcenturies. Dont missthe Old Eau GalliePost Office buildingand the adjacent area.
Other highlights on Highland are theAdvent Christian Church, St. PaulsUnited Methodist Church, 1926 GinterBuilding, Karrick Building (now aflorist), the outstanding home of theWinchester Symphony Orchestra, CivicCenter, and the newly built park on thecorner of Highland and Eau Gallie.
For eats, try Sweetie Pie Bakery,Concepts on Highland, and the brandnew Live Oaks Bistro.
The Renee Foosaner EducationCenter and the Foosaner Art Museumhave now merged with the FloridaInstitute of Technology. This finemuseum houses works of international, national and local artists and rotatesexhibits on a regular basis.
Go north on Highland and betweenEau Gallie and Montreal you have avariety of excellent shops andrestaurants, including Ace hardware,Mathers Bakery, Ralphs Art Supply,The Horn Section and Global Tours &Travel, among others.
Crossing Montreal on Highland, visitthe historic Rossetter House Museumand the Roush House; both are on theNational Register of Historic Places.
There is much more to do and see inHistoric Eau Gallie. SL

Growing up in NewYork City, most elemen-tary school children hadto go to the library toborrow books to learnabout things given asschool assignments.Over the years, as myfamilys library of booksgrew, I didnt have to go to the libraryvery often.
By the time I married and inheritedmy parents library, my four childrenrarely visited the public library. Theywere surrounded by books, mostlyhistory or classics. When we heard ofa new book we wanted to read, weusually purchased one for ourselvesrather than borrowing. If thats all libraries were for, wed never seemuch of them.
Over the years, libraries changedand offered more than just books. Foryears, Ive borrowed VHS tapes ormovies on DVD and attended someprograms my local library offers.
I checked the phone book to discover Brevard County has 17 different libraries: each of these publicplaces that we all can use have differ-
ent things to offer. They do not eachoffer all the sameopportunities but theclasses they teach, movies they show, seminars they hostand programs theypresent vary.
What prompted me to write aboutthis was discovering something the Suntree/Viera Library has that Ive notseen anyplace else. As an avid reader,I subscribe to four national publications, but how long can youkeep magazines, with articles that arenot dated and are always of interest, piling up at home?
I was trying to find a place to donate them. Suntree/Viera Libraryhas a table inside the entry where people may leave magazines. They arethere for the taking, giving, keeping or returning, but they are not going towaste. How wonderful! Ive recentlyleft a years worth of three differentpublications for others to read, enjoyand share. Others will follow.
