Have you ever wondered what a stress free life would be like? It does sound appealing but realistically I don’t think there is such a thing! In fact I think we are created with a stress response to manage the reality of life. As humans, we all experience stress differently. Some have a greater capacity than others to manage their stress but regardless of this, the challenge is to keep growing. As part of our emotional intelligence programme this term, we are looking at Stress Tolerance as one of the areas of Stress Management on Bar-On’s EI model.

Stress Tolerance involves coping with stressful or difficult situations and believing that one can manage or influence situations in a positive manner.

It might surprise you to note that a certain amount of stress can be good for us. It pushes us to achieve greater things whether it be on the sports field or in the classroom. It is a wonderful feeling when you’ve met that deadline on time or achieved beyond your expectations on a test. It is at times like this we realise that we have got the capacity and we wow ourselves! This links in with Self Regard which we explored at the beginning of the year, using our strengths to manage those stressful tasks. If the task or situation ahead looks overwhelming, a pessimistic and rigid thought process is not going to be helpful. Flexibility in our thinking and looking for the positive can help us manage instead. Being intentional about applying these EQ skills is what grows our resilience and tolerance towards stress.

As teachers and parents, we would like to see this growth in our children, but growing their capacity to tolerate stress means we can’t deny them the opportunity by lovingly rescuing them and solving all their crises! Life has taught us how to manage our stress. I most certainly have a greater capaci-ty now than I did 20 years ago. Let's intentionally help grow stress tolerance in our children in order to achieve better stress management outcomes, a key skill of Emotional Intelligence.

Eid MubarakWe would like to wish all Muslim families “Eid Mubarak.”

Lost Property and Missing Items We are experiencing a concerning amount of pupils' belongings disappearing at school. Almost without exception though, the items are misplaced or inadvertently taken by the wrong owner and end up in the wrong home where they tend to be 'adopted'. This coming school holiday serves as an ideal opportunity to help your child work through their school / sport and other items and ensure that they do not have another child's belongings in their possession, and if they do, that they please return these to school.

There is an inordinate amount of unmarked lost property - please ensure that all your child's belongings are clearly and permanently marked.

Pedestrian Crossing Parents are reminded once again to please slow down and/or stop before the red bricks to let school children cross. We ask that you remain mindful that there is pedestrian traffic in the parking area.

ParentLineOur ParentLine (parent/teacher meetings) will be held on Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 June for Grade 4, 5 and 6. Meetings start at 14h45 and end at 20h00 on Wednesday and at 17h00 on Thurssday. These meet-ings are very important as it is the teachers’ opportunity to discuss your child's progress with you. The book-ings for the parent/teacher meetings will be done via the parent portal. Please note the parent portal went live for bookings on Tuesday 4 and close on Wednesday 12 June. Parents are encouraged to book during this period as no bookings will be accepted after the parent portal is closed.

Outstanding Library BooksAs we are coming closer to the end of the semester, the library is doing a quick stock check of outstanding and potentially missing books. If you have received a mail to remind you of any outstanding books, please help your child to return these. Here are some great hints and tips on how to look for library books:

First things first boys and girls, try to remember what the book looked like:How big was it? What colour? Was it thick or thin? What do you remember about the cover? Is it hardcover or paperback?

If you're not sure, ask Mrs Calhau, maybe she can show you a picture. Also keep in mind that all library books have spine labels, barcode labels, and library labels so that they stand out!

Here are some places you could look:• In the car or under a car seat• In a book or school bag- yours or a siblings• Under or the back of a couch- check behind the cushions• Your personal book shelf• Aftercare or the Lost property baskets• In the kitchen on a counter or, behind an appliance like the fridge• Under or in your or a sibling’s bed- even under the bedsheets at the foot of the bed!• Between your bed and the wall- a true story!• Under the pile of dirty clothes or the laundry basket• The bathroom- yes, even there!

Failing that, the book will then need to be replaced. E-mail Mrs Calhau directly on [email protected] who can give you an idea of helpful bookstores/ sites where you can source the book.

Holiday Care - Sherpa KidsSherpa Kids will be running a Holiday Care at the Senior Primary campus during the June / July school holiday period. To book a spot for your child, please contact Desiree at [email protected] or call her on 083 503 3974. The holiday programme is attached to the newsletter e-mail for your info.
