PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Chris Defina

Another season under the sun is over, good bye season 16/17. Thank you to our committee members for their valuable contribution to our club throughout the season. We could not function without your generous contribution and there is no club without you. All of you are volunteers who sacrifice your own time for the enjoyment of others. I want to thank you all for everything we achieved. We may have missed out on some opportunities and went about things differently in terms of organisation, however in the end we stumbled over the line most times. Thank you Cliffy, Al Smith, Mark Fenby, Jimbo, Glenny, your help is amazing, makes a massive difference and takes a heap of pressure off the committee… Thank you. To Dave and Damian and all the Milo helpers – thank you for your contribution this season in bringing together our Milo program, such an important part of our club, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for bringing together this program for us this season. To Steve Utting, our Junior program was outstanding yet again this year, with all competitive teams making a finals appearance and I have no doubt our non competitive teams will do the same in the coming years. Thank you to all the coaches, team managers and parents who support our junior program. Really important for our club to keep building our depth and we are certainly on the right path. A special thank you to Bronwyn Badgery who always goes the extra mile when it comes to supporting our juniors, your hard work never goes unnoticed. To our seniors, we welcomed Rick Bean to the club this season and he set about delivering our objective of structure in terms of the way we trained. Rick hit the ground running with this at pre season and I sensed a level of enthusiasm. The season did not play out the way we would have liked for a multiple of reasons and they are all disappointing. Many could have been avoided through a shift in attitude and commitment in my opinion. It just wasn’t meant to be for some. Thank you to Rick and all of the captains for their contribution to the club this season. Well done to Tim Fogarty and the 4th XI on their premiership win. A wonderful way to finish the season and it was great to see so much support from the club at Upwey on the day. It showed a real sense of unity across all levels of our senior players. Thank you to everyone who supported. To all of the new faces to the club this season, welcome. I hope you enjoyed the year and we very much look forward to seeing you back and hitting the ground running next year. It’s always great to see new personalities at the club, it’s one of the things I enjoy the most. Socially, I thought we were pretty good this year with most of our big functions supported, it’s such an important part of the club to come together socially and I thought we did this better than the previous year. Thank you to everyone that helped bring these functions together. To our main sponsors, thank you very much for your valued contribution to the Monbulk Cricket club, we sincerely appreciate your generosity. To our Vice President, Daniel Clark, congratulations to you and the outcomes you generated in this space. Another thank you must go to Tye Marchetti who was able to once again entice many new sponsors to the club which made a massive difference, thanks Tye and congratulations on your premiership. Congratulations to everyone who has received awards and recognition this year, your individual performances have been outstanding and your achievements are something you definitely should be proud of, be proud of what you have been able to gain for your club. As most will know, this is my last season as President of the club, it’s time for me to go off and do some other things. Whilst I am bitterly disappointed we didn’t achieve what I set out to achieve as my time as President I am sure the club will continue to go from strength to strength under new leadership. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has supported me whilst being President and my nine years on committee. I would also like to thank Bee and my kids for allowing me to spend the time I do at the club and their contribution. I wouldn’t be able to have been able to be President without their support and understanding. My biggest thanks is to them.

Thanks again for everything, it does feel a little strange knowing this will be my last season report however I have many good times to look back on and that’s why I love the club as much as I do. I have always said, if you let this club run through your veins, it pays you back every single day. It’s a very special place to be, it’s up to you how much you want to be a part of it. My advice is to let it in, roll with it and enjoy the good times and come back harder during the bad times – that’s cricket! Good bye, stay safe and I will see you later! Go Monny Funky

Monbulk 1st X1 – 2016 / 2017 – Captains Report

What a year… of emotion, disappointment, heartache, sense of failure, and even at times the taste of elation. Debutants coming through all season which is definitely a positive for the club’s future, Harrison Bean, Daniel Cleary, Tam Noonan, Tom Taylor, Mitchell Palma, Shannon Tibbals all got their first taste of 1st XI cricket for this great club. Five scores near 200 with four totals greater than 260. Our bowling and fielding were our disappointments but I know moving forward the improvement will be there for all to see. To think the season started way back in the first week of August and was completed prematurely in the final round where it all started with a very narrow loss, the later by a paltry one run. It wasn't the second last ball that cost us the game, it was the multiple of incidents we missed through the game that cost us victory and this is where we need to improve as a team and a club moving forward. I would like to thank my Vice Captain Chris Coen for his support, and Billie Hicken for stepping up as leader over the year with the pinnacle of captaining the club to its only victory of the year in a 20/20 over Belgrave - which was a fantastic day for the club. Also thanks to Jason Fraser for his support as Vice Captain in the final game, but also for your support throughout on your return. I would also like to thank Daniel Clark for his sensational year as opening bat and wicket keeper for the season and your efforts never went unnoticed. I really thank the President and his committee for trusting me and there professional support they gave me throughout this trying year. My apologies also go to the President and his committee for an unacceptable result I brought to the club and I will not settle until the accepted result is achieved. A huge thank you to Al Smith for for tireless efforts scoring and giving me all the support and help you gave me. We as a club should not keep the negative vibes attached to us but to look at the positives, let's find them and act on them. Be prepared for a solid pre season and produce what we are all looking forward to and that's to put this great club back on the map as a successful club not only off the field but also on it. Regards Rick Bean Senior Club Coach

Monbulk 2nd X1 – 2016 / 2017 – Captains Report

Excitement at preseason this year was high with the thought that Monbulk would finally field a very competitive 2nd X1 due to the group of new players joining Monbulk and strengthening our 1st X1, which would in turn flow down and increase depth throughout all the grades. Needless to say this didn’t play out the way we had hoped with a few departures right on the eve of the season proper, add in a couple of seniors missing through injury and another tough year for the Monbulk second X1 was ahead of us. Unfortunately we are at a point in our evolution whereby the depth in our club really does have an impact on our top grades should we have any changes to the list regardless of how small or large in significance. Having said that we again showed signs of improvement through sporadic individual efforts by our older guys and again our younger players took some positive steps forward to becoming regular senior players at our Club. The highlights for the year of which there were only a handful include and the one I believe would be the favourite of many that were there that day was the fantastic performance by the 2s in the T20 played at Belgrave. It would be wrong of me to single out any one individual player because it was the complete team effort that saw us take the points on that day. The most frustrating thing is this really does highlight that we have the potential and ability to play at a very high level we just lack the belief and mental toughness to back it up week after week. From an individual performance perspective there were not a lot of standout consistent performers for the year but I must make mention of a few. The century by Dave Williams at Monbulk which was his first for the 2s was some of the cleanest hitting and boundary clearing many of us have seen or will see again for quite some time. The efforts of Tom Tylor with the ball who toiled very hard after being thrown in the deep end and finished as our highest wicket take in the 2s, great effort for such a young player. On another positive note it was great to see 2 of our younger bowlers finishing 1 and 2 respectively with Daniel Cleary not far behind. It’s important that these guys along with Tam Noonan, Mitchell Palmer continue to work harder to improve as they will be shouldering the majority of the workload in the coming years. My other huge thanks is to Carolyn Gillard and Annie Fenby who were there each week looking after scoring and preparing afternoon teas respectively. Thankyou ladies…….Your commitment to the club is very much appreciated Finally……I know I say this every year and will continue to do so in the hope of something changing. We need more commitment from our younger and mid-tier aged playing list across the board whereby the majority of player’s play the majority of the season, if this doesn’t change then I fear that no matter how much work we put in we just want gain any consistency. This has and always will have a significant impact on our senior grades when we struggle to keep consistent sides on the park from week to week. Thanks again to all for your efforts. Have a great winter until we reload and go again for 20178-18 SIMMO

Monbulk 3rd X1 – 2016 / 2017 – Captains Report Another productive season for Monbulk 3rd eleven not quite reaching the heights we would have liked but a lot of great performances both as a team and individually We did not settle into a consistent line up until well into the season. With the top two sides struggling for players the players who were in a position to help nurture the next generation of senior players spent a lot of time playing in higher grades. Much praise must go to the seniors players in the team Bob Badgery, Jason Dekkers Dave Marshall Shannon Tibballs Chris Defina. We had a lot of younger players and they were well supported by these senior players with advice and encouragement. Consistency in the line up made it difficult to settle the team but when we did finally get the core group settled performances steadily improved. The application in the field was the highlight of the season, through this we were able to turn a number of games into a position where we at least had a chance to win. Unfortunately the results didn't always go out way but it is gratifying to know we did what we could. Improving performances by the bowlers as the season progressed Josh Spencer's control with the new ball was not always rewarded with wickets but he must be commended Dylan Goldberg bowled both off spin and opened the bowling with some excellent pace bowling Jason Dekkers was the best of our bowlers this season rarely did a batsman get the better of him. As the season progresses Tom Badgery got a few more chances with the ball and his performances steadily improved some excellent swing bowling with his increased pace will see him getting more wickets. Shannon Tibballs had some excellent games with both bat and ball TJ Utting opened the batting and started well and improved, a very hard man to get out. Bob Badgery opened and where he did not get the runs he might have liked he still played a couple of handy knocks with a few innings cut short with good catches Tom Badgery batted at number three and did a great job in the hardest position, a number of good scores backed up by his enthusiastic fielding makes things look good for his cricketing future. Brayden Brockwell worked hard with his batting and showed great improvement as the season went on Jason Dekkers along with Tom Badgery were our leading batsman Jason scored his runs at a good rate and we won games on the back of his batting. Another who backed up their batting and bowling with excellent fielding Not able to have the benefit of their talents all season but great performances by Mat Winzenreid 2 innings of 60 and 67 and Steve Utting 102no were highlights. Unfortunately we failed to make the finals this year, we came close and know where we need to improve. It was however a great team to play cricket in and the players should be proud of their efforts. Not easy to captain a team and keep everyone happy but Bob did this as well as apply the discipline required. Every player should be grateful of his efforts. He was well supported by his vice captain Jason Dekkers, the team was very well lead. A big thank you must go to Phil Hiosan who was our Team Manager and biggest supporter, thank you Phil for all of your time and support, we appreciate it. Thanks to all who contributed to the threes Bruce Jamonts

Monbulk 4th X1 – 2016 / 2017 – Captains Report

I’d like to start by thanking everyone that helped contribute to the 4s success this season. Although a

strange season, I'm proud of team's efforts during what was, at times a trying one.

We didn’t start the season as we would’ve liked, losing the opener to Upwey. Our side bounced back

though, winning the next three games by forfeit to place us solidly in second position.

After the run of forfeits we finally got to play a game against Olinda, where we were able to see what a

fine cricketer Duncan Maher has developed into. He contributed with 55no in a solid innings, to give us a

win going into the Christmas break.

When we came back from the break we played Upwey again, and again fell short in a close contest.

Sadly, a fourth forfeit received for the season then followed. A win in our next game, against Belgrave,

would've seen us take second spot on the ladder and a home final. Sadly though, we lost another close

game, by just nine runs. While we lost, we did get to see Jim Fenby reach 100* and Pat “Party Boi”

Hurley make a well made 15*. Their efforts almost get us over the line.

Our win against St. Johns Tecoma in the final round secured a home final. Paul Utting starred here,

making 41*.

The semi final against Olinda had it all. We saw one of our U16s (Sage Farmer) bat for 44 overs to make

a gutsy 37, and Pauly continued from the week prior with 38 more runs. Being able to watch Ken

Beecroft and Rab Noonan hit the winning runs to see us into the Grand Final was great sight and great

sign for our club going forward - the kids got us home!

Now facing Upwey for the third time of the season, I was confident we could give them a run as we had

our best possible side in. After the first 35 overs in the field, we had taken 5 for 105. We then had great

opening partnership from Austin and Tye, before Paul came to the crease and the game quickly

changed. Both Paul and Josh Rak were not out over night, as we posted a healthy 2/154. Needing five

wickets on day two, we made steady inroads with everyone contributing with the ball. Eventually, we took

that final wicket and were left with 28 to win. We did it easily. Beating Upwey by 8 wickets with almost 30

overs remaining was nothing short of special. Paul continued his good form of runs making a massive

96*, and Josh Rak contributed a classy 34* - they shared in a 118 run partnership.

Though our team didn’t play a lot of cricket this season, it was still full of highlights which I won’t forget.

Thank you for not only making my job easy, but ensuring I thoroughly enjoy it.

Monbulk 5th X1 – 2016 / 2017 – Captains Report

The 2016/17 season was a very enjoyable year for myself and the young men who I played alongside with each week. Unfortunately, the season didn't start the way we planned with us dropping the first two games without much of a fight. But our season drastically changed with a stroke of off-spin brilliance from Chris Rak taking 5/18 in our first win against Rowville. Since then we didn't look back, and as a team we won 11 straight including wins against all other finals contenders! We had a lot of great contributions this year with Josh Rak making multiple half centuries and being the pick of the bats for most of the year. And our biggest recruits at the club Pat and Justin brought plenty of class to the team with the ball. Looking back on the year something I and the club definitely won't forget is the 5fa from Andrew "The Weapon" Firth taking 5/14! I’d like to also thank some of the senior heads such as Jamie and Beetle who a valuable contribution to the team as well as all the other boys who played roles for us throughout the year. Even though the year may not have ended as we may have liked it’s been a pleasure captaining you all. Meet ‘em out there! Spooner

Junior Co-ordinators Report 2016/2017

Well another season of junior cricket at Monbulk has come and gone and as junior co-ordinator I couldn’t be prouder of our club. I have no doubt, in terms of sportsmanship, fair play, participation and fun for all, we do this as well as any club. For this, I would particularly like to thank our coaches and team managers for being perfect role models and teaching our kids how to play cricket in the right manner. This was the first season for many that I haven’t actively been involved with Milo or coaching a junior team on a Friday night. I was therefore able to get around on a Friday night to see some of our junior teams in action at our main ground (U10’s), Silvan (U12’s & U13’s) and the High School (U11’s). I really enjoyed doing this and reinforced in mind what a great club and culture we have. I would again like to thank all of our coaches, team managers, scorers and other helpers for their dedication to their teams and for making my job so much easier. I would like to congratulate our most important award winner - ‘Jason Fraser Shield’ – Tam Noonan.Tam is a very worthy winner, he has great work ethic at training and in matches, is helpful, and is a consistent performer – all qualities needed to win this award. He started in our Milo program followed by 5 years of junior cricket. He was also rewarded with a couple of games in our 1st XI this season and has a bright future at our club. Other highlights of the season included: *85 awesome kids playing junior cricket at Monbulk, and another 50 or so participating in our Milo in2cricket program. *Very little weather interruptions this season compared to last season. *The huge improvement of our two U10 teams. *A fantastic season by our U11’s. We look forward to them playing competitive U12’s next season. *Fielding two U16 teams. One of the few clubs to do so in the FTGDCA. The majority of our U16’s then regularly played senior cricket on a Saturday afternoon. This is one of the most pleasing things for me and a great sign for the future. Both teams also made the finals. *12 Monbulk cricketers playing junior representative cricket carnivals over the xmas break. This is the most we have ever had and I encourage as many as possible to get involved next season. It’s one of the best ways for individuals to improve as well as our teams. *Having four girls play in our teams. Well done to Jasmine and Nancy for also playing U12 girls rep cricket and to Olivia Davis for winning the association bowling award. Kira was also a star. *All four of our competitive teams reaching the finals and obviously the U12’s winning our first junior premiership in 10 years. What an amazing grand final win in front of a huge Monbulk crowd. Congratulations to coaches Thomas Badgery and Simon Davis, team manager Steve McDonald and all of the players. In finishing I would like to thank a few more people: -Dave & Di Daly for doing a terrific job co-ordinating the Milo in2Cricket program, along with their many helpers and Damian Howard for his support. -All of the parents for their support and encouragement during the season, and to those that cooked BBQ’s and fed our teams as well as opposition teams. -Thanks to the senior club for their support including, senior coach Rick Bean, senior committee including Chris Defina and Daniel Clark, senior captains and particularly Bronwyn Badgery for the massive amount of work she does for our junior club. -Lastly, thanks to my awesome family Kelly and the kids for their help and making the cricket season fun. See you all next season Steve Utting

MONBULK U12 PREMIERS Congratulations to coaches Thomas Badgery and Simon Davis, team manager Steve McDonald and all the players for becoming U12 premiers in season 2016/17. They narrowly defeated FTG in the semi-final in an exciting and nerve racking match. This had nothing on the grand final though. Our U12’s defeated a strong Upwey-Tecoma team in the grand final in what was one of the most exciting matches for those there who witnessed it. Half way through the split innings match Monbulk were 3/71 slightly behind Upwey-Tecoma on 4/80. Batting first on the second night Upwey-Tecoma made it to 9/139 from their 40 overs. Monbulk’s fielding was a real highlight saving many runs in the field. All the boys and girls bowled well with Camden McLean and Alex McDonald both taking two wickets. Needing 69 runs to win, Monbulk chipped away at the total. Isaac Hylton Stewart (19*) and Camden Mclean (12*) batted well at the top of the order both retiring after their 30 balls. A great partnership between Matt Abraham (14) and Tom Donald (13) got the Hawks close leaving Olivia Davis and Isaac who had come back in, to get 4 runs off the last over. Some great saves in the field by Upwey, meant Monbulk, 9 out, needed one run to win off the last ball. The ball went through to the keeper, and Olivia and Isaac managed to scramble through for a single to win a dramatic grand final in front of a huge crowd at Monbulk. Congratulations to both teams on an amazing match and to Monbulk U12’s for winning our first junior premiership for 10 years.
