Dear Members,

Summer in the city can be hot and humid, but

classrooms are usually air-conditioned and

cool, so sign up for one of the educational

opportunities in this issue of Seniority Insider.

In this issue we are offering a couple of

classes to provide education about infection.

This is a topic often in the news because of

“Super Bugs”. Viral, bacterial, stomach flu,

summer colds … what are the basic truths

about infections? Seniority has several On The Go trips that are sure to make you want

to get out of the house and have some fun.

From a behind the scenes tour of refurbished

and revitalized Memorial & Music Halls to

a two night getaway to Fall Fiesta of Fun

filled with laughter and of course adventure

travel for those looking to truly get away—far

away. Keep yourself and your brain actively

engaged. It may be summertime, but exercise

should not cease just because it’s too hot

to play outside. There are plenty of activities

that can be done inside a nice cool workout

center and let’s not forget about swimming.

Swimming is awesome for those with aching

joints because of buoyancy.

Wishing you good health always,

Protecting the Public from Infectious DiseaseInfectious diseases are disorders caused by microorganisms—such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Many organisms normally live in and on our bodies. These organisms are typically harmless or even helpful, but under certain conditions, some organisms may cause disease. Helping the public avoid infectious diseases is the role of the TriHealth Infectious Diseases group.

From the management of infection risks within physician practices and hospitals to antimicrobial stewardship, the role of Infectious Disease physicians is a key to patient safety within the healthcare system. Overuse of antibiotics has led to the development of resistant strains of bacteria and this antibiotic resistance puts our health security at risk. Antibiotic resistance is associated with increased risk of hospitalization, longer hospital stays, increased risk of ICU admission and increased mortality rates.

While frequent and thorough hand-washing helps protect from most infectious diseases and is always recommended for the public and medical staff, many levels of additional protection are being standardized throughout TriHealth. The TriHealth Perioperative Infection Prevention Program identifies and screens for infections before surgical procedures. For example, if a patient is found to be a Staph bacteria carrier, physicians can decolonize the patient and reduce the risk of infection prior to a procedure such as joint replacement or pacemaker insertion. Ultraviolet robots used to decontaminate patient rooms and operating rooms offer another level of protection against infection in the hospital setting.

How can you help prevent antibiotic resistance? Don’t use antibiotics for viruses due to colds or flu. Follow antibiotic directions carefully and finish medication even if you feel better. Some bacteria may survive and re-infect you. Don’t save antibiotics for later or use someone else’s prescription.

1. Infection! What is it?

We have all had them, from a splinter, to a bug bite we scratched too much, to a raging inferno in our gut that signals a major infection. They can be anywhere, and happen anytime. Viruses are smaller than bacteria. They enter a cell, leave genetic material which causes the cell to multiply. Bacteria are everywhere in life. They can live in any environment, even in toxic waste! Viruses cause things like hepatitis, polio, the flu, and ebola, while bacteria cause things like pneumonia, plague, food poisoning, UTIs, and upper respiratory tract infections. Come learn what they are, what the difference is, and how to survive.

2. How to prevent, cure and take care of an infection

Why are there super bugs? Where do they come from? Do you have to take all your antibiotics? And why do antibiotics not work against a cold? The symptoms of an infection depend on the organism causing it as well as the site. As you read in our Healthy Hint this issue, handwashing is the biggest, strongest weapon in the fight against infection. Learn how and what more you can do. If you use antibiotics too often or too long, you impact the healthy bacteria in your body which can lead to fungal infections! Don’t get sick! Come learn all about it.

Let’s fight!

Handwashing—it’s critical!Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of disease and germs. When should you wash your hands? All the time. Your cell phone can have over 2 million germs, that’s more than 503 toilet seats.

When to use soap? Soap is by far the most effective weapon in the war against germs; and it does NOT have to be anti bacterial soap. Good old bar soap works just fine. Wet your hands with cool or warm water. Use bar soap or liquid soap and rub your hands together to make a good lather. Soap up your hands for 15 – 20 seconds. Sing The Alphabet Song through (no rushing!) and you will have it right. Soap and water will remove 99.9% of all germs.

When to use hand sanitizer? Hand sanitizer is often available when soap and clean water is not. Perhaps on a trip, at a ball game, on a picnic, soap and water may not be available, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t clean your hands. Use an alcohol based hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol. Use enough to cover all surfaces of your hands and rub hands together until hands feel dry, approximately 20 seconds. Not using enough and not rubbing long enough are the two biggest mistakes.

If your hands are visibly dirty or greasy, use soap and water. If there is no soap and water available, use hand sanitizer but follow as soon as you can with soap and water.
