MessageWE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT MANY OF THE SERVICES,

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES LISTED IN THIS GUIDE

WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE HUGE

AMOUNT OF TIME AND EFFORT PROVIDED BY

    LOCAL VOLUNTEERS.

F ollowing the success of the 2009 and 2010 editions of the Guide, it is withgreat pleasure that we present the 2011 Seniors and Care Guide. The aimof this publication is to help you access a wide choice of services and activitiesappropriate for seniors in your local area. It covers a range of topics includingleisure activities, health services and home support.

The Guide has been developed as a joint project between Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Councils and the publisher, Seniors & Care Guide.

In todays fast paced world relying on family members can be difficult. Work andfamily commitments often mean time is limited or not available at all. In responseto this common dilemma, Councils have taken on board the responsibility toprovide useful information guides to help seniors, and their families and carers, with decisions that may need to be made now or in the future.

We acknowledge that many of the services, programs and activities listed inthis Guide would not be possible without the huge amount of time and effortprovided by local volunteers. We extend our warm and sincere thank you to themany volunteers for helping to provide much needed services which contribute tothe health, vibrancy and social cohesion of our communities.

We trust this Guide will encourage you to explore the range of local services andactivities available, which in turn, may assist in maintaining your independentlifestyle. The many and varied social activities will help you stay connected with your community, neighbours and friends.

We urge you to read on. We feel confident that you will be enticed to try something new!

    Yours in good health,

    from the Mayors

    Attune Hearing is All Ears

in Mona Vale Attune Hearing Mona Vale opened its doorsin April 2010, offering a comprehensiverange of specialist audiology services forchildren and adults.

Since then, local audiologist Mitch Adairhas taken the clinic from strength to strengthwith his professionalism, candid advice andgood old-fashioned customer service.

We took a moment with Attune Hearing client and local Mona Vale resident,Cynthia, who has shared her experiencewith Attune and how it has helped her tohear life at full volume. What made you decide to have your hearing assessed at Attune?

I work in Mona Vale and saw a new hearing clinic on my travels and I decided to have alook. I went in and spoke with the staff andthey were very helpful and approachable. They went to the effort of fitting in withme rather than the other way around. How long have you had a hearing loss? What kind of impact does this have on

communication/relationships for you?Having suffered a hereditary hearing lossmost of my life, I had always managed to getby but didnt really realise how much energy I was putting into trying to hear each day. Itsnot obvious to people that you cant hear itsan invisible problem.

Had you considered hearing aids before?I had considered trying hearing aids in

the past but I put it off because I didntfeel mentally prepared to use them. Otherconsiderations to take into account werefinancial expense and deciding on the mostappropriate type of hearing aids for my lifestyle. Which model of hearing aid did youdecide to go with, and why?

Never having tried hearing aids before,Mitch was very good at explaining to me what to expect, and gave me great guidanceon which models to try. I trialled fourhearing aid models to see which one I felt was most suitable for me.

After the trial, I decided to be fit with a pair of Unitron Latitude 16 hearing aids. This model had all the features I was looking for and seemed the easiest for me to getused to, i.e. gave me what I felt was closerto normal hearing than the other models. Some of the other ones amplified too many

other noises that I was not used to having tohear. In the scheme of hearing aids these areconsidered pretty high end, but I wanted toget the best ones possible for my first pair. Were there any accessories with thehearing aids?

I chose to have my hearing aids programmed

Local resident Cythia (left) with audiologist Mitch Adair at the new Attune Clinic at Mona Vale

along with a device called a u-Direct. Thistakes the signal from my mobile phone andsends it wirelessly into both hearing aids. Now I dont have to wait until Im in aquiet place to make a call. I can also use tu-Direct with my TV so now I dont haveto turn it up so loud, and Ive even turnedoff the subtitles. What have been the most positiveaspects of your experience with AttuneMona Vale so far?

The staff are very knowledgeable. And if you ask them a question and they are notsure about the answer, theyll go out of the way to find out for you. They took intoaccount my lifestyle and ensured I had themost appropriate products for my situation.

I didnt feel rushed into making a decisioor persuaded into purchasing anything. They simply gave me all the information Ineeded to make my own choice.

Attune Hearing is supervised, supportedand owned by over 21 local Ear, Nose and

Throat Specialists and audiologists, makinit the trusted name in hearing healthcare. For more information on Attune Hearing
