Critical Care Internship
SNGH’s Critical Care Internship provides an opportunity for new graduate or experienced nurses without intensive care experience to develop the skills necessary to deliver safe and competent critical care. The 9-week program consists of lectures, discussions, online learning modules, simulation, and experiential learning in an ICU clinical setting.
The Critical Care Internship is held twice per year, usually during spring/summer
and fall/winter months and consists of a
total of 500 hours of didactic instruction combined with self-paced, online learning
modules called, Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO).
The Critical Care Internship is dedicated
to providing quality and evidence-based
education that helps ICU Nurse Interns transition successfully to the critical care
setting.
Development of Critical Care
Knowledge and Critical Thinking: Topics include advanced pharmacology,
pathophysiology of various illnesses and injuries, end of life discussions, organ
procurement, balloon pump therapy, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
(CRRT).
ECCO 3.0 from the American
Association of Critical Care
Nurses The Critical Care Internship utilizes ECCO 3.0, an interactive, case-based course designed to orient nurses on critical care basics. The modules cover diagnostic tools, diseases, disorders, and patient management principles that commonly occur in a critical care environment. The CCI offers a safe environment for learners to explore and make mistakes, reinforced with correct decisions and rationales.
Development of Critical Care Skills:
Interns work in specialized critical
care settings 12—36 hours per week under the direction of preceptors,
educators or unit coordinators to gain hands-on skills and knowledge in car-
ing for critically ill patients.
Advanced Critical Care Sim Lab:
Interns are provided with hands-on practice in a simulated environment
working with equipment necessary for hemodynamic monitoring, advanced
airway and mechanical ventilation,
new tracheostomy care, arterial lines, mock code situations, chest tube
care, dialysis, multi-system failure, and post anesthesia recovery.
The Critical Care Internship provides an
opportunity to sharpen nursing judgment
and strengthen clinical skills. Interns
work in collaboration with a multidiscipli-
nary team utilizing the most up to date
equipment and evidence-based practice.
