Last month, a neighbor was in her garage when the old door suddenly dropped to the ground and was impossible to open from the inside. She was trapped. She had her cell phone and called the BPHA of-fice. Our office manager called the deputy on duty. The deputy freed her in less than 4 minutes. This is the beauty and benefit of our Constable Patrol Program. Ready to join?

SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

Hot topics for the summer

School is out and so are our children. First and foremost, slow down! They will be playing in front yards and darting into the streets and enjoying their freedom. It’s our job to be alert and quick on the brakes.

The great Campus Park area between Twain and Pershing is a magnet for fun, but it can also occasionally lead bored and idle kids into mis-chief. Helen’s Park is designed as a quiet park — no playing in the fountain or creek, and no bikes or skateboards allowed. Also, the youth sports fields will be closed at times so the turf can heal. If you see misbehavior, flag down the campus park deputy who is as-signed to the park area and is patrolling nearby.

Keep an eye on the new homes under construction near you — partic-ularly at night and on weekends. Watch for building materials that are leaving the job site. It might be a theft in progress. Don’t hesitate to call the Constable Dispatcher if you are a member or Houston police if you are not. Your new neighbor will be grateful.

When you see a deputy patrolling down your street, wave him down and say hello. They are delighted to meet residents and very much want to get to know you and hear your concerns. Learning more about you and your home helps them to keep us safe.

Time to invest in your family’s safety

In the next few days, you will receive your invoice for your annual share of the BPHA Constable Patrol Program. With your support, we maintain the largest contingent of contract deputies in Harris County. And it is no coincidence that we enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in Houston. 81 cents a day — less than the monthly cost of a monitored alarm system — buys you around-the-clock coverage by full-time, armed and licensed deputies with the power to stop, question, detain and arrest suspicious per-sons who have no legitimate business in our neighborhood. This kind of focused, professional law enforcement has made an enormous difference in our property values and our quality of life. Every member of the Constable Patrol receives:

24/7 response to your calls for help or reports of suspicious activity

A bold and visible membership sign for your yard

Connection of your alarm system to the constable’s emergency dis-patcher for quick response to trouble

Vacation Watch while you’re away, where a deputy actually gets out of the car to check your home

Special investigations and response to unusual, personal situations, such as stalking, harassment, domestic situations and drug issues

PROJECT BRAYS & POOR FARM DITCH by Billy Pilgrim

Current Contract: As of May 7, the current Project Brays contract is 77% complete and remains on track to complete by August 2017. Next Contract: The May 9 meeting agenda of the Harris County Commissioner’s Court included a recommendation for approval of construction documents and authorization to seek bids for a three-week period for the Brays Bayou Federal Flood Reduction Project (Project Brays) from 2,200 feet upstream of Buffalo Speedway to 2,900 feet upstream of South Rice in Precincts 1 and 3 (UPIN1709900D1E010). This contract is scheduled to begin construction in late July 2017 and complete by August 2018. Buffalo Speedway Replacement Bridge: The May 9 meeting agenda of the Harris County Commissioner’s Court included authorization in the amount of $424,912 for design, bidding and construction phase engineering services to replace the Buffalo Speedway Bridge over Brays Bayou in the Brays Watershed in Precinct 1 (UPIN180900D1B026). The Harris County Flood Control District has received a letter from the COH Public Works Department stating that the replacement bridge will be constructed with 11 foot travel lanes, a minimum of six foot sidewalks and dedicated left turn lanes. Still to be determined is additional sidewalk widths to accommodate bike lanes. This contract is scheduled to begin construction in the second quarter of 2018 and complete by August 2019.

TRAFFIC MITIGATION PLAN by Nicole Shah & Phil McCormick

Thank you to all the residents that submitted comments after the February public meeting regarding the Ayrshire traffic management concept plan. After reviewing all the comments, the City proposes to only place one speed cushion on the 4000 block of Aberdeen Way for temporary testing, the next step in the process. There was not enough support from Ayrshire residents to place any devices on Academy or cushions on the other 4000 blocks of Ayrshire. The City also noted in the last comment period an overwhelming number of residents on 3800 block of Gramercy requested speed cushions be added to their block. Therefore, in addition to the current Braes Height plan, one speed cushion will be added to the 3800 block of Gramercy for temporary testing. With respect to the 4000 blocks of Ayrshire, some of these blocks had a few residents in favor of devices with little opposition on that particular block, but the City found a few residents’ support was not enough to place a device for temporary testing. Note that the City will evaluate this again during the third public meeting and comment period. The next step is for the City’s recommendations to be given to the Director of Public Works and Engineering for approval. If the Director approves the recommended plan, temporary installation of the speed cushions would be expected to occur later this year and hopefully before the end of the summer and the start of a new school year. Approximately 90 days after installation of the devices, the City would perform another traffic study to determine if other streets have been impacted by the installation of the devices. This next traffic study will be followed by a third public meeting and comment period.

HUCKLEBERRY SPARK PARK BREAKS GROUND!

By Elaina McNulty, Huckleberry Park Chair It's happening! On May 15, the Huckleberry SPARK Park broke ground on the new neighborhood SPARK Park. The graduating Mark Twain Elementary 5th grade students did the honors by each taking a turn shoveling dirt into a wheel barrel as the construction trucks rolled up to begin demolition. It is an exciting time for our neighborhood! The park is going to be amazing and will be open to the neighborhood after school hours, weekends, and holidays. Fundraising is still going on to build a sustainability fund for the park to keep it in tip top shape for our children for years to come. If you were thinking of getting a paver, tree or a donor wall spot, now is the time. Please visit www.huckleberrypark.com to see all of our donor offerings. You have the option of placing an order online or you can send checks to 7500 Braes Blvd. addressed to Huckleberry Park.

GOOD NEIGHBOR STORY Submitted by Ivy Diaz

We always hear about teens getting into trouble. I love hearing about teens helping their community. Here is an example of that. Braeswood Place teen residents worked hard this morning to help beautify the neighborhood we love! Here are some pics of 9th grade students and Braeswood Place residents: Noah Diano, Max Sheaffer, Alan Diaz, Pablo Schnelle and Patrick Partridge helping plant and beautify our Stella Link espla-nades under the direction and leadership of BP residents Claudia Schnelle and Jack Stopnicki.

We are so thankful for Mark Twain staff and the way they go above and beyond each day to help the students learn and grow. It was such a privilege to show appreciation for their amazing work as we neared the end of this school year. Thank you parents and students for your display of gratitude all week. Congratulations to Longfellow for being named to the 2016 Texas Honor Roll by the Educational Results Partner-ship. Longfellow is excited to announce that a team from the school was selected to participate in the 2017-2018 National Wildlife Federation’s Monarch Heroes program in Houston. Longfellow will receive funds and education to create a Monarch Butterfly Habitat at the school. Longfellow's magnet program ended the year on a high note with band and orchestra students performing out on the lawn while art students held an art show inside the school. The Longfellow Enrichment Choir sang at the HISD Choral Festival and received many compliments from the judg-es! Longfellow also had 13 students perform in the All City Orchestra Concert at Meyerland Middle School. The choir and dance students ended the year on a sweet note with a fun and whimsical performance of Willy Wonka. Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe summer!

YARD OF THE MONTH by Jackie Addington

The yard of the month for June is located at 3646 Maroneal. When the drainage and sidewalk project was underway a few years ago, the homeowners, Jeff and Pilar McNear, chose to enclose their yard with a stone wall. As is apparent in the photo, this provided an attractive feature and also eliminated the difficult to maintain yard slope. The homeowners wanted a vibrant and cheerful yard and they achieved this through repetition in plants and color. Pink penta, white caladium, and white vinca surround the outside of the wall and front of the house and create a very appealing palate of texture and color against the bright green of the zoysia grass. Italian cypress, palm trees, sago palm and ligustrum shrubs, a pittosporum hedge, and knock out roses provide additional landscaping height, texture and color. The same color theme is carried through the courtyard and into the private back yard for the family to enjoy.

ADOPT AN ESPLANADE VOLUNTEER FORM

As you have probably seen or read, BPHA is making our neighborhood more attractive by planting on the esplanades’ ends. Would you like to help by volunteering to adopt one of these esplanades’ ends? Responsibilities include: going twice a month (or more if you feel like it) to pick up the trash and pull any weeds that may be growing. If you see that a plant is dead, sick or in need of water, please send us an email. That is all! If you would like to volunteer please complete the following: Name ______________________________ Contact email ___________________________________ Esplanade to adopt (write the intersection such as Stella Link @ Aberdeen) 1st choice _________________________ 2nd choice _________________________ We will try to accommodate your request. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Each year, the American Red Cross publishes a preparedness guide of tropical cyclones to help us prepare for such an emergency. You can download a copy of that guide at:http : / /w w w.nws .noass .gov/os/hur r icane/res ources/TropicalCyclones11.pdf. This guide gives great information on the weather terms associated with tropical storms and what to expect. It also lists critical infomation about how to prepare for an including storm. Some guidelines are as follows:

• Determine safe evacuation routes inland• Learn locations of official shelters• Check emergency equipment such as flashlights, generators

and battery powered equipment such as cell phones.• Buy food that will not spoil and store drinking water.• Buy plywood to protect your home if you do not have it.• Trim trees and shrubbery so branches do not fly into your

home.• Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts.• Decide where to move your boat if applicable.• Review your insurance policy.• Find pet friendly hotels on your evacuation route because

most public shelters do not allow pets other than service animals.

If you are staying home to “hunker” out the storm:

• Turn refrigerator to maximum cold and keep it closed.• Turn off utilities if told to do so by authorities.• Turn off propane gas tanks.• Unplug small appliances.• Fill bathtub and large containers with water in case clean tap

water is unavailable. Use water in bathtubs for cleaning and flushing only. DO NOT DRINK IT!

• Stay away from windows and doors, even if they are covered. Take refuge in small interior room, closet or hallway.

• Close all interior doors. Secure and brace exterior doors.• If you are in a two-story house, got to an interior first floor

room.• If you are in a multi-story building and away from water, go

to the first or second floor and stay in the hallways or other interior rooms away from windows.

• Lie on the floor under a table or other sturdy object.

Imagine two families taking dream trips to Greece. The Patrick family did the planning themselves. They spent considerable effort researching and booking options, and by the time the vacation rolled around, the family was exhausted.

The Torrance family, on the other hand, simply met with their travel advisor. She discussed options and made suggestions. The family decided what they wanted, and the advisor handled it from there. Let’s see how the two trips turned out.

The Patricks endured a cramped, noisy flight in coach. The Torrances enjoyed first-class seating—an upgrade their travel advisor secured through a contact at the airline.

The Patricks couldn’t check in to their hotel for three hours upon arrival. They were also surprised to discover the rooms were within earshot of anti-government protests. The Torrances eased right into their accommodations, finding a basket of fruit with a hand-written welcome note from the manager.

The Patricks spent much of their time arguing about what to do. The Torrances enjoyed one adventure after another.

Both families faced a return flight cancellation. The Patricks stood at the back of a long rebooking line. The Torrances called their advisor, who made new arrangements quickly.

Which vacation sounds better?

For a weekend getaway, planning it yourself might be a good option. But for a more involved, once-in-a-lifetime vacation, nothing can replace the professional experience, insider knowledge and personal contacts of a quality travel advisor. Your retirement could be looked at as the most important vacation of your life. Don’t try to manage its complexity by yourself. A professional advisor will help you get there, and free you to enjoy both journey and destination.
