The excitement and anticipation of a great 2016-2017 school year was evident throughout the building. As I toured the school, I enjoyed seeing our Sacred Heart Family again! We have 41 new students at Sacred Heart School this year for a total of 201 students. Our school theme is, “Going Above and Beyond!” We set a high academic standard and have full accreditation from AdvancED Accreditation. Our ISTEP+ test scores from last year were given to individual students’ parents, and our school’s letter grade will be awarded in the near future. Our goal this year is to continue our excellence and meet even higher expectations by starting with each student at his or her ability level, and “Go Above and Beyond!” We are continuing our STREAM Program to help prepare our students for their future. Please see the STREAM article in this issue for innovative details. We are asking parents to form a STREAM Committee to enrich and further develop this program. Please see me if you are interested. Every day I give thanks for the many blessings here at Sacred Heart. Please continue to pray for our Sacred Heart Family as we “strive for perfection”.

VOL. 9 ISSUE 1

A Note from the Principal

Dear Sacred Heart School Families,

Wow, the first few weeks have been great!

Our goal this year is to continue our excellence and meet even higher expectations by starting with each student at his or her ability level, and “Go Above and Beyond!”

We are continuing our STREAM Program to help prepare our students for their future.

It takes the effort and hard work of many people to make SHS such a great success. We couldn’t be all that we are without our awesome volunteers! We welcome and depend on our parents and grandparents to help with various activities and events with our students.

In an effort to do our best to keep our students safe, our Diocese has put into place a "Safe Environment Program" for all of our volunteers.

Please contact the office if you are interested in helping so you can complete the required training before you come in to volunteer. You must contact the office at

least 1 week prior to any volunteering.

Thank you!

SOLAR ECLIPSE GLASSES DONATION

We would like to thank all the families who donated money towards the Solar Eclipse Glasses. We have received a total of $731 towards the $1000 bill.

Also Thank you to our Home and school association for paying the balance!

Drop  o f f  and  P ickup  Procedures  For  the  sa fe ty  o f   everyone ,   it  is  important  that  each  person  follows    the  same  drop  off  &  pick  up  procedures.  Please  get  in  the  pick  up  line,

in  your  car,  to  pick  up  your  child(ren).      We  ask  that  you  do  not  walk  up  to  the  door  to  pick  up  your  child(ren)  unless  it  is  absolutely  necessary.    For  security  as  well  as  a  safety  measure  for  staff  to  know  with  whom  children  are  leaving,  we  are  asking  for  your  cooperation.  Please,  under  no

circumstances  should  you  pull  into  the  handicap  parking  spaces  to  drop  off  or  pick  up  your  child(ren).  Use  the  parking  lot  across  the  street  if

there  are  no  empty  spaces.  Please  know  that  you  are  always  welcome  in  the  school  at  any  other  time.

THE  ‘FAST  PASS’  IN  THE  PICK-‐UP  LINE!

There  are  two  families,  Alderfer  &  Bodiker,  who  have  "Fast  Passes"  which  were  won  last

Spring  at  the  SHS  "Next  Big  Event"  fundraiser.    These  "Fast  Passes"  allow  the  owners  to

skip  and  move  to  the  front  of  the  car  pick-‐up  line.    Please  do  not  think  these  two  families

are  cutting  the  line.    If  you  are  interested  in  this  fast  pass  for  the  2018-‐2019  school  year,  it

will  be  an  auction  item  at  our  "Next  Big  Event"  fundraiser.

 NWEA Assessments

Fall NWEA Assessments will begin for Grades K - 6 on Monday, September 11th through Friday, September 22nd. Students will be assessed again in January and May. This will allow the school to not only monitor progress, but to help drive instruction based on students’ strengths and weaknesses. The tests are over reading, language arts and math skills.

A lot of questions can be answered by going to the NWEA web site at: http://www.nwea.org

ISTEP+ Testing Dates Grades 3-6

Monday, February 26th through Friday, March 9th

Monday, April 16th through Friday, May 4th

DIBELS

This year we will administer DIBELS to grades K, 1, & 2 and as needed in grade 3.

All of the above assessments will give your child’s teacher a very clear picture of your child’s abilities and provide a tremendous plan to guide instruction to meet each and every child’s academic program. As you may know, education today is very prescriptive which will result in tailoring instruction to a child’s needs. We are planning to continue to make great strides for student achievement. Please make every effort to have your child(ren) in school

and try not to schedule appointments during the above assessment times.

Casual Days for a Cause

We will again have Causal Days for a Cause. This year we are again going to have a special focus each month for the Casual Day. To participate students are required to bring in at least $1.00 to be dressed casually. The dollar or more donation will go towards a special cause each month. For the month of September, we will have a special cause days, which will be for Veterans where students may wear red, white & blue on Monday, September 11 for Patriot Day. If you choose to not have your child participate, please send your child in their school uniform. Please refer to your Parent/Student Handbook for guidelines for casual day attire. Thank you all in advance if you choose to participate.
