Sept 2019
Welcome back, I do hope everyone has enjoyed some holiday fun since we last got together. The weather as always has been varied, let us hope for plenty more sunny days before winter is upon us! Some members of the Table Tennis Group travelled to play a very friendly competition against Cowbridge U3A in August. We have to congratulate Margaret Price & Gary Russell who won the event, but everyone who went along had fun, so well done all! As you know we are planning some special events next year to celebrate our 25 years, we have created an icon which will help identify items in this newsletter when we advertise them, so here is our first one. We are planning a Gala Event with a distinguished speaker at the Coed-y-Mwstwr Hotel in late June 2020, but the venue needs some idea of numbers now! To express interest (without obligation!) please ring Elizabeth Bower or e-mail Marcia Humphries. The approximate cost of £45 per head includes a 3-course meal & return coach from Porthcawl. Non-members may be invited as guests. Would you like to take part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning? Come along on Friday 13th September at 10.00 a.m. to Trinity Church Hall. Entry, with Coffee & Cake, is £3 - Do bring a friend with you. Some lovely people have promised to bring along some cakes. If you can bake, we’d welcome yours as well, if you can’t, cheat. You may have to watch the TV Ad to understand. All profits to: Do we need a 4th Book club? If you think we do, see me and add your name to the list! 2020 U3A Diaries are once again available for purchase. @ £2.75. If you would like to purchase one please send a cheque for £2.75, before October 31st, to Caroline David Good News for fans of Musical Theatre - Harry is feeling better and he's back! Hope to see you soon Sally Corbett

October 20th September November 18th October December 22nd November
September’s Monthly Meeting features a talk by Malcolm Cowper
Reluctant Warriors Malcolm will read extracts from his latest book 'Reluctant Warriors: Memories of National Service 1945 to 1960'. The book is the result of over 60 interviews of men who were conscripted into the armed forces, usually for two years, even though the country was no longer at war. Some very familiar names and faces will feature in this Power Point presentation. Not one to be missed!
On Friday 20th Andrew Collier will give a talk on The British Constitution:
This relates gently to our recent local services series and has of course huge relevance in current times BUT it is also intended to be in the background of, a prompt towards the debates which have been promised at the end of the series. Topics should emerge (voting system, role of parliament, answerability of MPs, meaning of news, respect for politicians and experts) - so I hope that those interested in such things will turn up and volunteer to speak on dates to be arranged.
3 historical talks and 2 hours of free time to explore the Museum £19.50 per person including welcome refreshments.
To book tickets visit u3a.org.uk/events Ring U3A on 020 8466 6139 with any queries.

Mindfulness Meditation. Please could the members who attended the second group at my house last year, have a look around their shelves as I’m missing one of the books belonging to the U3A. It is: “Mindfulness. A Practical Guide To Finding Peace In A Frantic World” by Mark Williams and Danny Penman. If you have it, could you pop it into the YMCA, and I can pick it up from there, many thanks,
Jaci. 785691
A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in reception discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to move. ‘But why?’ they asked, as they walked off. ‘Because,’ he said ‘I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.’
