If you spend time surfing the internet, Id like to directyou to a special website on this day, ten years on, whenwe remember the worst terrorist attack on the UnitedStates of America and one of the deadliest days ever onAmerican soil. The site is called 9/11: The Catholic Church Remembers9/11: The Catholic Church Remembers9/11: The Catholic Church Remembers9/11: The Catholic Church Remembers andits been put together by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishopsboth to mark the tenth anniversary and to record for posterity theexperiences of pain but also of hope which flowed from that disaster. Thelink is: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/september-11/

The site includes recollections of Cardinal Edward Egan, who was thenarchbishop of New York and was called almost immediately by New YorkMayor Giuliani and asked to head for St. Vincents Hospital. Thus began

soul-searing days tending to the sick on stretchers and anointing bodiespulled from the smoldering rubble where the Twin Towers fell. CardinaEgan also speaks movingly of Ground Zero, which he dubs Ground Herothe funeral Masses at St. Patricks Cathedral, and the priests pressed intoservice that day. If I had to sum up 9/11, I would say it was a time inwhich people taught this nation and the world how to be strong and how tobe willing to sacrifice themselves for others he says in one video. It was aterrible tragedy, it was a crime, but it was a magnificent manifestation ofcourage and willingness to sacrifice self. He also describes finding closure atGround Zero in April 2008 when Pope Benedict XVI met there withvictims families, lit a candle and prayed. On that day there was so muchgoodness there that the evil was, I think, not only conquered, it was

    smothered, Cardinal Egan says.

The website also has comments from chaplains, firefighters and families ovictims. For example Jesuit Father James Martin, culture editor of Americamagazine, was one of the priests called in to aid rescue workers. Hecomments: In this hell I found grace. I thought what is God like? God islike the firefighter who rushes into a burning building to save someoneThats how much God loves us. And I saw this love expressed in the greacharity of all the rescue workers who gathered at the American Golgotha.Msgr. Anthony Sherman, a Brooklyn pastor, had to hold funerals forparishioners lost in the inferno, including firefighters, and a woman at whosemarriage he had officiated a year before and who had announced on 9/10

that she was pregnant. He says: 9/11 led us all into the very depths of themysteries of human suffering, death and resurrection. We discovered that wecannot obtain nor find all the answers to the atrocities we experienced. Yetwith Gods grace we also experienced the height of human sacrifice and theability of our brothers and sisters to manifest heroic love.

Some of you will remember how people returned to church and expressedtheir patriotism in the days that followed the tragedy. May this tenthanniversary, as we pray again for all who died and all who are still sufferingbe a time when we renew our trust in Gods grace and our desire to serveeach other and our country.
