This Sunday is the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time ofCycle A, which means that once in every three yearswe hear the story (only found in Matthews Gospel) of the two sons - the onewho refused his fathers command and then did the right thing; and the one who

promised to obey and then did nothing. Three years ago when I preached on thiGospel Id been in the parish less than three months. I was still the new kid on theblock and I explained to you that my background was that of a priest-teacher,responsible for boys in a Harry Potterish English boarding school where I was veryfamiliar with the fluctuating moods of adolescents. My homily included thesewords:

Reading todays Gospel about the two sons made me remember my years owork in the school. Every day, almost every hour, I would see obedience anddisobedience in action. Occasionally a boy would refuse outright, like the first sonin the story who said I will not that could happen when they were told to goand play sports on a cold and wet January afternoon; and it was a great relief to

discover later that they had changed their minds and done what they weresupposed to do, so that I didnt have to deal with an irate coach and think upsome kind of punishment. What was much more common was that a boy wouldsay Yes, Father and then not do what he had promised. Tidy your room,Yes, Father, and the place would still look like a disaster area hours laterTime to get up, Yes, Father, and then you would hear that the boy had slepin until eleven oclock and missed Sunday Mass. Those were the disappointingtimes. I remember telling a very smart final year student from Poland that it watime to go to bed the eighteen year olds were meant to have their lights out at11:15. Yes, Father he said. About 2 a.m. I was woken by some noise anddiscovered him with a group of friends engaged in a serious philosophicadiscussion, helped by a bottle of Polish spirit which is about 100% alcohol. Here was one of the schools best boys, and he had broken the rules so badly that

he would have to be suspended.

I then told you how the Polish boy recovered from that setback: he did brilliantlyin his exams, he joined the Dominican Order, and eventually chose to go back toEngland to study and work. He was ordained a priest in September 2008, justbefore I preached about him, and I now sometimes see his homilies on theinternet! The truth is that we all have setbacks in our lives, when we fail to do theright thing and forget the promises we have made to God. The important thing inever to despair. The son who refused to go to the vineyard afterwardchanged his mind and went. Let us learn from him: God our Father is everhopeful that we will change our minds, turn away from the things that will neversatisfy us, and walk again in obedience and truth.

Next weekend, October 1-2, is dedicated torespect for life, which remains a matter of graveconcern here in the United States where morethan 50 million legal abortions have now takenplace. On Sunday morning we plan to witness to

the value of all human life by holding a series of life chains outsidethe church. After each Mass we will hold signs visible to passing vehicleson Edgewater Drive. Please volunteer to help. Pick up a sign at the backof the church and make a stand for life.

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 25, 201

The one who had received five talents came forward

bringing the additional five. He said, 'Master, you gave mefive talents. See, I have made five more.' His master said tohim, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since youwere faithful in small matters, I will give you great

responsibilities. Come, share your master's joy.'

    Matthew 25:20-21

My Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Each year you open your hearts to the people in our Sister Diocese of San Juan de l

Maguana in the Dominican Republic through your offering of your time and talent imission work and your financial support of their economic needs.

This year our Annual Sister Diocese Collection is the weekend of September 24-25. Thidiocesan-wide collection provides the greatest portion of financial support for our ministrwith the people of San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic.

Our major focus in the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana is education of the people wh

live in this mountainous region of the Dominican Republic. Here, quality education ha

traditionally been a luxury for a very few. The five (5) schools our diocese sponsors make difference every day in the lives of over 350 children and youth in the mountainous region

We fully fund elementary schools and teacher salaries in the mountain region of Los FrioEl Montazo, Los Guayuyos, and La Cucarita. As an extension to our educational ministry

19 poor high school students are able to attend Loyola Polytechnic High School in SaCristobal and live in our residence program.

You are the hope-filled catalyst as the children and youth obtain academic and social skil

ensuring them of a better future. The national academic exam results for the children an

youth in schools sponsored through your generosity mirror those of children in high-end, fo

profit private schools. These children and youth far exceed public school standardized result

Today, we also have two of our priests and one of our religious sisters who assist Bisho

Jos Grulln, my brother bishop in the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana, witSacramental ministry, catechesis, leadership development and all age faith-formation a

Father Fred Ruse, Father Hilario Rivera and Sister Bernadette Mackay lead these beautifu

people to a life in Christ.

During the past twenty-eight years, like the laborers in St. Matthews Gospel, you havtended the talents given to you and multiplied them for the people of the Diocese of San Juade la Maguana. Today, I ask you again to open your hearts and minds to their reality an

assist them with financial support through this annual collection. Please also consider a gift o

your time and talent for one of the mission trips to the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given ueverlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts anstrengthen them in every good deed and word.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Most Reverend John Noonan

    Bishop of Orlando
