THE BIRDS

The birds have fledged and left the nest. I had to move the thistle birdfeeders away from our house because the young birds were’s as perceptive as the adults and kept running into the windows in spite of the window allert stickers. I took one young bird to the Rowena Wildlife Clinic on hwy 30 for Jeanie to doctor.

Food Facts Zucchini, Tomatoes, herbs

Whip up a Ratatouille with all those

fall vegetables. Cook together,

onions, sweet peppers, garlic then

add tomatoes. Set aside. Cook

together eggplant and zucchini.

Shred some parmesan cheese.

Chop basil, dill and parsley. Now,

oil a casserole dish, put in 1/3 of the

first mixture, top with cheese and

herbs, add 1/2 of second mix, 1/3

of first mix again, top with

cheese and herbs, the rest of

the first mix, rest of second

mix and top with cheese,

herbs and some capers.

Cook for 30 min. to

reduce liquid. Serve.

Nobody is more deserving of a win than Kathy Fitz who was claimed the winner of the Craft & Design’s Ugliest Kitchen Contest. Not just because her’s was such an ugly kitchen, titled for the contest “I Feel Seasick” but because one of the criteria for contestants was their

BAYLY STEVENS GOES TO WASHINGTONHi, it's Bayly Stevens... I want to say thank you very much for your donations toward my June school trip to Washington DC and NY City. The trip was unforgettable and completely amazing. We did so many amazing things. Just to name a few:

-Smithsonian Museum of Natural History...my favorite part was the Dinosaur and Water Creature Exhibit-The Art Sculpture park...we got caught in the biggest rain and thunder storm I've ever seen! The park had an awesome 3-D House that folded up as you walked around it.-Fords Theater...This was so Awesome and one of the my most favorite stops. We saw where Lincoln sat when he was shot and the weapons that Wilkes Booth had when he was finally caught.-Washington Monument...It is even bigger in person. From the top it feels like you are swaying in the wind a little bit. I found the brick from Oregon on the inside of the Monument.-Arlington Cemetery/Changing of the guard/wreath laying ceremony...Another girl from our group was pick to lay the wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier. We all cried. I got separated from the group on the way to the tomb for about 10 minutes. It was really scary but they found me right where they left me.

I learned and saw so much in Washington D.C. Next time I go I want to go to the Pentagon and try to get a tour of the White House. Some bomb threat happened while we were there so those things weren't available for us. I liked it in D.C. a lot but the food wasn't very good.

Between Washington D.C. and New York City we went to MT. Vernon. This was really cool. I saw how they used to cook in a separate kitchen outside of the actual house. They had people in costume dressed up as George Washington, his kids, servants, wives etc. We saw the slave houses and the barns and his tomb. I learned that his last words were, "Tis' Well..."

Finally we got to New York after a super long bus ride. The weather and food in New York was a better than in D.C. In New York we did a ton of things!

-Phantom of The Opera...My first show on Broadway and it ROCKED! The best part was during the masquerade party. The music and Drama got really loud and awesome.-Time Square...All the advertising screens (billboards), ALL the people, ALL the street venders, it felt that if you got lost, you would be gone forever!-Top of the Rock...We went 30 stories high to the observation deck and saw the whole city all lit up at night.-The Subway...I didn't really like this much. I thought it was hard to get on with all the people coming off and it was smelly and dirty too.-The Statue of Liberty...I was not able to go up in it because she is so old, only about 5-10 people can go in at a time. She is huge and I really am glad I have seen her in real life.

I could not have participated in this trip without the help of all you wonderful people...my extended family...and friends helping me. Thank you all again for giving me the experience of a life time. This is a trip I will never forget!

Thank you,

Bayly Stevens

One Hundred Years Ago In Mosier! ! Glimpses of History from the Mosier Bulletin

! ! ! Compiled By Doris Lewis Smith

Friday, September 1, 1911! Don’t forget that next Monday, Labor Day, the Commercial Club will give a picnic to its members and invited guests, in Dr. Macrum’s grove. Basket dinners will be in order. The hours will probably be from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

! Mark A. Mayer, Mrs. B. Weller and son, Ullman, went to Portland Tuesday morning, returning yesterday. Mark shipped his seven-passenger Pierce-Arrow back to Hood River, and the party motored home from that city.

Friday, September 8, 1911! School opens next Monday. All pupils should be in attendance the first morning for enrollment, particularly those who intend to make the 10th grade.

! A bunch of about 18 Mosierites descended (or rather ascended) on Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Mosier last Monday night and spent the time until midnight in various forms of amusement, having a most delightful time. The hampers they carried were filled with all kinds of good things to eat, and it is needless to say that each one did full justice to them, especially as some of Mosier’s most notorious appetites were there. For getting up a surprise party of this kind and providing a sumptuous repast on short notice, the Mosier ladies excel. If you don’t believe it, ask the poet of the Cascades.

! Last Saturday afternoon, as Mr. Mark Mayer was coming into town from Mayerdale, accompanied by Mrs. Weller and her children, the driver made a too wide detour at the bend on Bateham hill and the big Pierce-Arrow machine went over the embankment. Fortunately there was little headway to the car and it did not turn over, but ran about three times its length down the hill. The party escaped with no injuries, but somewhat alarmed. The machine was extracted next morning, none the worse for its experience.

Friday, September 15, 1911! The ringing of the school bell brought 73 pupils to the school house on Monday, their faces showing a pleasant anticipation of a prosperous and satisfactory school year. The pupils were divided as follows: In the advanced room with Prof. Johnson as principal, there were 20 pupils, in the intermediate room there were 21, Mrs. Johnson has charge of this room, and in the primary room there were 32 little tots, who will have Miss Huntington as their teacher. All three of these teachers have had years of experience in their work and the school board and parents may feel assured that their children will receive the best of care and instruction.

! D. D, Hail had the misfortune to lose one of his big bay horses last Sunday. Funeral services held Monday, interment down in the bottom. Only the immediate friends of deceased were present.

Page 11: SEPTEMBER 11 the MOSIER COMMUNITY€¦ · Only 4 more weeks of the Mosier Farmers’ Market. September 4th Theme is "Compost Happens" with a dirt box of buried treasures & topsoil

Friday, September 22, 1911! Mrs. E. Simpson, of The Dalles, will be in Mosier with up-to-date fall and winter Millinery, Sept. 22 and 23, Friday and Saturday, at The Pines Hotel parlor.

! Sunday afternoon a number of neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Littlepage to partake of ripe and juicy watermelons. Some of the melons sampled were fully 20 inches long and they were of very good quality, strictly home grown, without irrigation.

! The Union Sunday School gave a very pleasant evening to its members and friends last Thursday which was enjoyed by all. Refreshments of sandwiches, cake and lemonade were served. The fun of the evening was guessing the names of Mosier people who were represented, or suggested, by pictures tacked on the walls. Some of the pictures were very suggestive, some easily read, and some required a stretch of imagination to interpret. Of the 54 representations, the highest number guessed correctly was 45. This method of entertaining is quite unique and certainly furnished amusement.

Friday, September 29, 1911! Ortley Items—Captain Charles M. Bundle, Adjutant of the 16th Infantry, stationed at Fort Seward, Alaska, joined his superior officers, Colonels Cornelius Gardiner and C. W. Kennedy, in locating on an orchard home at Ortley. From far-off Valdez these officers report that many prominent Army men of high rank now assembled there…will soon visit Ortley with a view of locating. At this rate, we will soon have an Army and Navy Club at Ortley.

! Citizen Hudson has a three-year-old peach tree in his yard on the Heights that bore some fine fruit this season. One of the peaches which he presented to us weighed 9 " ounces and it wasn’t the biggest of the lot, either.

! The series of five entertainments to be given in Mosier this winter by the Meneley Concert company will begin in October…These entertainments are all of the highest order and the people of Mosier will have an opportunity to see and hear the best speakers, singers and artists that can be brought together anywhere. Season tickets will be sold for $1.50 for adults and $1.00 for children. Think of it—five high class entertainments for thirty cents each.

garden, were all met by responders who asked us questions according to EMT protocol, took our vital signs and assessed our individual situations.

Answer according to directionsWe victims were given pre-orders to act according to the symptoms and to answer questions truthfully. Blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen levels were checked, pretend ambulances were called and Marc Berry was there as Mosier firefighter and played the role of Hood River Medic receiving patient reports.

Screams Were HeardEmily, shown right, had potential spinal compromise and our volunteers had the opportunity to see if the emergency kits were packed appropriately and contained cervical collars. Emily screamed when she was rolled over on the broken collar bone, the great actress that she is, and the blood was very realistic.

The practice was great. It gave our volunteers real-life experience in a safe and non-life threatening environment. Unfortunately, the dummy in the truck bay was dead, but efforts were made to revive it once one team figured out that that thing lying on the floor was their victim. Great job everybody!!!!

MOSIER FIRE IN PRACTICEI don’t know what YOU were doing Monday night August 29th, but your Volunteer Fire Fighters were practicing EMT responses on real life dummies. Oops, let me rephrase that, there was one dummy, above left whom they couldn’t revive, because he was never alive in the first place, but the rest of us, myself, Emily Reed, Mark Cherniack were willing “victims” of (for) the Volunteer fire dept. Emily, covered in sticky, fake blood, Mark in a diabetic state of confusion and me, having a heart attack in a

FIRES NEARBY AND IN OREGON

Three families were left homeless after a weekend blaze in The Dalles August 28th. The fire struck in the Columbia Crest Mobile Home Park. The fire is being investigated.Temperatures in The Dalles were 95º and winds were high which made fighting the fire difficult for firefighters. One fire fighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion. When responders arrived on the scene one mobile home was completely engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to two other residences. The Columbia chapter of The American Red Cross helped the three displaced families find temporary lodging at Cousin’s Country Inn in The Dalles. The fire appears to have started outside the first home that was destroyed. Also over the weekend, first burned on the Warm Springs reservation. A fire is still blazing on Mt. Hood closing down Tilly Jane and Cloud Cap areas. The Forest Service is managing this fire. Other areas burning include land west of Shaniko and Antelope.

RUSSEL LAGRANDE JOLLEY PASSES AWAY. Russ Jolley, the author of the definitive book on Wild Flowers of the Columbia River Gorge passed away August 24th, 2011. If you ever had the pleasure of taking a wild flower hike led by Russ, you now know wild flowers. Russ was born December 6th, 1922. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas. I have not been able to locate an obituary about Russ but have written to the Mazamas and asked to re-print an article they did recently on Russ as a Mazama.Russ was instrumental along with friend Nancy Russell in preserving wildflower territory in the Gorge. The public wildflower lands have proven a draw for tourists, hikers, and nature lovers from all over the world. The wildflowers are important to wildlife, to the health of the soil they grow from and to the hundreds of people who receive the benefit of exercise, endorphins from the pleasure they feel while hiking through the fields, and they provide a beautiful environment for those of us who live out here and were educated by Russ.

Improving Local Food Systems -- Mosier, OR, Farmers' Market

From Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, we heard about a great example of an organization that is cultivating a strong regional food system.! The Gorge Grown Food Network states on their website “We envision a healthy, self-sufficient Columbia River Gorge where our food is produced with integrity and is valued, abundant, and accessible to all.”

How do you go about promoting both the supply side and the consumer side of local eating?! One way is to promote local farmers’ markets.!! But small communities can struggle to attract a critical mass of vendors that will bring enough customers to support the market.! So the Food Network bought a truck, outfitted it with a refrigerator, tables, and other equipment, and created George, the Mobile Farmers’ Market!! Each week, the driver buys produce and other products from local farmers and producers at a discounted rate to fill the truck.! She then takes George to 4 different small market sites over the

weekend to augment the offerings by local vendors and add enough variety of produce to attract the local residents.! Once a farmers’ market is self-sustaining with its own local farmers, the goal is for the mobile truck to move on to other towns that need its support.

One of the mobile market sites is in the small town of Mosier (population 460).! We visited to see how their market is promoting community and healthy, local eating.

The Mosier Farmers’ Market is held on Sunday afternoon, from 4 to 7 PM.!! We arrived early to help set up in the parking lot of the 10 Speed East Coffee Shop!and the adjacent vacant gas station lot, where the market is held.! The merchants started arriving and setting up their displays and canopies about 3 PM.! Then the!local fire truck arrived to block off the street between the two parking lots and filled a small pool with water for kids to cool off in.!!

We met Suzi Conklin who explained that this is the first year they’ve had a farmer’s market.! She and some friends had taken a study course from the Northwest Earth Institute called “Menu for the Future” and decided that Mosier needed a farmers’ market.! They investigated the neighboring Hood River Farmers’ market, talked with the managers there, learned about the Gorge Grown Food Network and the mobile farmers’ market, and started planning.! Thus, the Mosier Farmers’ Market came about.! The first market day was July 3, 2011.

When the market was all set up, it was a bustling and busy sight:!SEE NEXT PAGE:

Mosier Watershed Council August Meeting – Kris(ten) McNall

*** SAVE THE DATE OCTOBER 25 WATERSHED COUNCIL – CREEKS AND FISH AND PLANTS...IT'S TIME FOR SURFACE WATER! We have received grant money for restoring Rock Creek, particularly for Steelhead habitat. More information will be presented Tuesday, October 25. We may also discuss other watershed goals related to riparian and upland watershed health such as working with Mosier Fire on invasive species removal.

NEW WELL LEVELS EQUILIBRIUM???The big news of the August meeting is that Ken Lite has noticed that the declining water levels in some Mosier area wells appear to be leveling off or declining more gradually. The graphs of several wells' levels now look like hockey sticks with a level bit over the last few years. Ken has a theory that our wells may be reaching a new equilibrium based on where the various aquifers intersect Mosier Creek. In order to test this theory, Ken is working with Cullen Jones, a graduate student from Portland State. Cullen will be mapping out the extent of the various aquifers in order to determine where they intersect the creek. This process involves examining well core samples, analyzing groundwater and stream water chemistry, and measuring how flows change up and down the creek to try to determine where creek and aquifer water commingle. Cullen and Ken presented us with an overview of Mosier's hydrogeology, and some graphs of water levels. We look forward to hearing more from Cullen in the future.

The good news about the water levels stabilizing is that perhaps things won't get worse. The bad news is that there will be less storage in the aquifers and that the wells may experience more seasonal variation with pumping. People may already be experiencing such variations. At least one orchardist said that he observes seasonal level declines. If Ken’s hypothesis is true, then the creek may also be affected because it no longer receives groundwater inputs but instead loses flow to the aquifers.

Meanwhile, the Watershed Council continues to discuss how to organize more community outreach and education, in particular as a precursor to discussing a special well construction standard. After some debate, we decided that it doesn't make sense to organize another big community meeting until after the USGS groundwater report has been published and is available for our use. We're feeling frustrated that it's been stuck in limbo land for well over a year, so we're going to start calling the USGS to let them know that they are holding up progress.

However, the GSI final report on the Artifical Recharge and Commingling Well Replacement/Repair feasibility study has been published. It is available on the SWCD web site http://www.wasco.oacd.org/ but that site only works with Internet Explorer. We will also be posting the report on www.MosierCommunity.com under the Issues tab (and complaining about the public web site inaccessability.) The report states that Artificial Recharge doesn't make sense unless wells are repaired first. Well repair is discussed extensively. As expected, well repair is very expensive, as is quantitative analysis of how much a well is commingling.
