24 rd Sunday Ordinary Time ~ How does God think? None of us can really answer that question from personal experience, but only from the ‘revealed W ord of God”. In that revealed W ord, this ‘thinking’ is shared with us by Jesus most directly in the gospel today from Mark. Jesus “began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected be the elders, the chief priests, and the

scribes, and be kil led, and rise after three days.” After a brief scuff le and rebuke of Peter – “Get behind me, Satan” – he tells us that this is the ‘thinking of God’. Most simply put, it is the ‘Paschal Mystery’. Some things, and perhaps we might even say, all things can only come about through a ‘dying’ and ‘rising’. ‘Coming about’ or ‘coming into existence’ necessarily means transformation. Even birth is that. W hatever existed in the womb and more precisely ‘how’ it existed is to be no longer. Ask a newborn baby (of course you won’t get much of an answer). The crying is testimony enough. The baby - secure and happy in the womb, with suff icient warmth and food and comfort and security - wants to escape the womb? I don’t think so. There is no vote, no opinion pole. Nature simply decides that l ife as it has been known for 9 months is to be no longer. The baby must ‘die and rise’ to life in the womb, that is, must leave the womb so that life can begin again in a much larger womb – the world! This is ‘Paschal Mystery’. This mystery is a daily one for the rest of our lives. Each one is a dress rehearsal for the total ‘Paschal Mystery’ to be realized in our physical death and resurrection – the promise. Why do we resist it? W hy can’t we see? Why do we rebuke this mystery as did Peter? W hy don’t we learn how to embrace it? Enter into it? Jesus sees it so plainly. Perhaps that is why he could embrace it so totally. “Whoever loses his l ife for my sake and that of the gospel wil l save it.”

This is our Parish's main and most important Annual Fundraiser Event.

Our goal is to get 500 participants and hope they will bring at least 3 family members or friends to join us. ALL proceeds will help with our next major project, a NEW FLOOR for the Church.

PARISH MISSION WITH FR. DOMINIC DEMAIO

Fr. Dominic DeMaio of the Dominican Religious Community will be giving a Mission from Saturday, October 6th through Thursday, October 11th. He will be preaching at all of the Masses and be giving talks during the week in both English and Spanish. Previously Fr. Dominic was assigned to St. Dominic Parish and on occasion celebrated Masses here and participated in Parish Penance Services. He will be visiting the school and available to the parish groups and is very excited to share in the life of our parish community. Watch this space to find out more information regarding our parish mission.

FR. PERRY VACATION DAYS

From Wednesday, October 3 – Thursday, October 11, Fr. Perry will be on vacation.

The Sunday Masses will be covered by neighboring priests and hopefully most weekday Masses. Should a priest fail to come due to illness or some unforeseen emergency, a communion service will be provided. This, of course, will fulfill a person’s Sunday obligation both because they have made the effort to attend Liturgy and also because in that instance this was the only service available. This, of course, also highlights the need for ongoing prayers for more priestly vocations, support for and invitation to men to consider a possible vocation to priesthood.

Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Cómo piensa Dios? Ninguno de nosotros puede realmente responder a esta pregunta desde una experiencia personal, sino únicamente por medio de la 'Palabra revelada de Dios’. En esa Palabra revelada, este ‘pensamiento’ es compartido por Jesús más directamente en el Evangelio de Marcos el día de hoy. Jesús "luego se puso a explicarles que era necesario que

el Hijo del hombre padeciera mucho, que fuera rechazado por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas, que fuera

entregado a la muerte y resucitara al tercer día". Después de una breve reprimenda a Pedro - "¡Apártate de mí, Satanás" — nos dice que este es el ‘pensamiento de Dios'. Más claramente dicho, es el "Misterio Pascual". Algunas cosas, y tal vez incluso podríamos decir que todas las cosas sólo pueden proceder a través de un 'morir' y 'resucitar'. ‘Llegar a existir' necesariamente significa transformación. Incluso el nacimiento es eso. Lo que existía en el seno materno y más precisamente el ‘cómo’ existía, ya no existe. Pregúntele a un bebé recién nacido (por supuesto no conseguirá más que una respuesta). El llanto es testimonio suficiente. El bebé; seguro y feliz en el vientre, con el calor, el alimento, la comodidad y la seguridad suficiente — cree usted que quiere escapar de la matriz? No lo creo. No se pone a votación, ninguna urna de opiniones. La naturaleza simplemente decide que la vida tal como se ha conocido durante 9 meses ya no existe. El bebé debe ‘morir y resucitar’ a la vida en el vientre materno, es decir, debe dejar la matriz para que la vida pueda comenzar de nuevo en una matriz mucho más grande — el mundo! Esto es ‘Misterio Pascual’. Este misterio es y será cotidiano por el resto de nuestras vidas. Cada uno es un ensayo general para el total ‘Misterio Pascual’ a realizarse en nuestra muerte física y resurrección — la promesa. ¿Por qué nos resistimos? Por qué no podemos ver? ¿Por qué censuramos este misterio como lo hizo Pedro? ¿Por qué no aprendemos a abrazarlo? A entrar en el? Jesús lo ve tan claramente. Tal vez por eso podía abrazarlo totalmente. "El que pierda su vida por mí y por el evangelio, la salvará".

DÍAS DE VACACIONES DEL PADRE PERRY

Del Miércoles 3 de Octubre al Jueves 11 de Octubre, el Padre Perry estará de vacaciones. Las Misas Dominicales estarán cubiertas por sacerdotes vecinos y esperemos que también la mayoría de las Misas diarias. Si un sacerdote no llega debido a una enfermedad o una emergencia imprevista, se proporcionará un Servicio de Comunión. Esto, por supuesto, cumplirá con la obligación del domingo de una persona, tanto porque han hecho el esfuerzo de asistir a la Liturgia como porque en ese caso, este era el único servicio disponible.
