SEPTEMBER 2019
Dear Fellow Quilters,
It is wonderful to be back home again, isn’t it? Once the volume was
adjusted on the sound system, it worked great. Remember, if you can’t hear,
feel free to move closer to the front.
At our next meeting, please remember to pick up some 2020 Opportunity
Quilt postcards. For those who have not seen them yet, they have a picture
on one side and Quilt Show information on the other. We have plenty, so please take as many
as you want and give to friends and businesses. Kathy Sonosky, our Opportunity Quilt
Coordinator, has scheduled several places we will be showing the quilt. If you are aware of any
other events we can take it to, please let Kathy know.
Thursday, September 12th at 9:30 am is the next committee meeting for the 2020 Quilt Show at
Shalimar MHV. We will meet monthly until the show. It takes everyone to put on a great show,
so please get involved!
The Quilt Registration Form deadline, for registering your quilt(s), is
October 17th. Please fill out the registration form and attach a 4x6 inch photo of your quilt(s).
Eric Drexler’s Sulky thread presentation was very enlightening and informative. (More on this
on page 17).Thanks, Betsy Turner, for your organization and behind-the-scenes hard work.
Please check the Education page for more info on the many classes Betsy has set up for you.
Please make sure you refer to the ”Frequently Asked Questions” section related to the quilt show
on page 7 of the newsletter. Feel free to contact Pam King or Janie Franco with additional
questions. They will continue to update the “Frequently Asked Questions” list monthly.
LITTLE LIBRARY is back in business! Thanks to Judy Nichols and her committee for all they do
to keep us stocked with books and magazines. Check out page 10 for details and color coding
for the books. It sure makes it easy to find whatever you need.
RENT A TABLE!!! Charity Sew was the first group to book a Sales Table and sold LOTS of
goodies. If you are interested in renting a table at the General meeting for $10 (in advance)
contact Alma Tilley. All months starting in September are currently open! Patriotic Block of the Month Each month, Barbara Manning has a pattern in the newsletter with
instructions. The patterns are fast and easy to make. Check out the patterns and make a block or two! Donated blocks are made into quilts for “Quilt of Valor” recipients. Volunteers are also needed to assemble the blocks into quilt tops.
Check out our new Help Wanted section on page 18. Blessed are the children of the piece makers …. for they will inherit the quilts!

MEMBERSHIP
Yeah! Party at the Membership table! Not really, but we are right next to the coffee & donut holes. Might as well enjoy it! Verna Donahue and Linda Miller have VOLUNTEERED to join Leslie, Jane, and me at the table by the door to meet and greet. Real volunteers, isn't it great?! We also have stealth Membership members. Nancy Meinhardt, Keeper of the Database, Sharon Pruitt, Diva of Directories, and Linda Fernandes, New Member Tour Guide-in-chief. I almost forgot our seasonal members, Diane Wilcox and Marilyn Wood and our stand-by money collectors, Aileen Kline and Mary Parkin. At this rate, we will soon be a significant voting block! By the way, the Guild acquired two new members in August. Their names are Wanda Anderson and Donna MacPhaiden. Welcome! Be sure to look into joining a Small Group, more friends never hurt anyone. We also had two renewals, bringing our Membership total to 245. I'll see you in September. (Isn't that a song? You know, that song those guys sing?).
Pat Donohoo

The West Pasco Quilters’ Guild, in conjunction with the National Quilts of
Valor Foundation, say to all Veterans and Service Members, “Thank you
for your service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation in combat.”

Members of the West Pasco Quilters’ Guild create these beautiful and patriotic quilts from
start-to-finish.

2019 Charity Quilt
Goal
350
Quilts!
We Can
Do This!!
Community Outreach - Charity Sew
Charity Sew is held at: Shalimar Mobile Home Village,
6529 Stone Rd. Port Richey, FL From 9 am to 3 pm.
ALL ARE WELCOMED.
Our Charity Sew event is held once a month. It is always the
next Wednesday after our monthly Guild meeting.
We do ask that items made on Charity Sew Wednesday be
donated to charity. As a Charity Sew group, we may work
individually or in teams, to help each other with piecing, quilting,
ironing, cutting, backings, batting, sandwiching, etc.
We provide the fabric and the batting.
As our Wednesday group has grown, we ask you to
please remember to wear your name badge.
More quilters means more fabric, and lots of threads and
scraps left behind. Please help out by cleaning up your area
before you leave. Assisting in putting back electrical cords,
rulers, mats, and fabric tubs is also appreciated.
THANK YOU.
Please feel free to bring a dish to share.
Parking is limited. If you can carpool with a friend,
that would be great!
**See page 20 for more details about the Guild’s other Small Groups!**

Charity Sew - September We will still be working to complete quilting on finished tops. A new pattern, Stepping Stones, is available for those of you who have been asking. There is an abundance of fabric in our storage room at Shalimar to be used. Please make that your first “shopping choice”.
FABRIC DONATIONS Remember we are only able to accept cotton fabric for quilting purposes.
Judy and I, as well as all the
“Charity Sewers”, appreciate
your very generous donations,
however, due to storage
restrictions, we are unable to
accept any more donations at
this time. Please keep your
donations for us until we are
able to rectify our storage
problems. Thank you.
Jacquie Currey
Great things are happening!
Charity Sew has been very busy. We are always excited
to welcome anyone who wants to contribute their time.
Many volunteers are working on their own Charity Quilts,
some have friends that are not even members who
donate quilts from near and far. These talented people do
so much for those in need.
We are on track to surpass our goal of 350 quilts this
year! We have now completed 278 Charity Quilts and
have many more quilt kits waiting to be finished. Along
with quilts, receiving blankets are also very appreciated
by the families that have received donations from
SOLVE. To date 56 have been donated.
During the Month of September, it would be a huge help if
members would come and work on quilting small quilts on
their domestic machines. There are also larger quilts for
those of you who would like to pick some up and
complete them on your long arm at home. A new quilt
pattern (Stepping Stones) was introduced at our August
28th Charity Sew. We will continue to work on this pattern
in September.
A huge thanks to all who were able to adjust their
schedules and come to Charity Sew on August 28th.
Hope to see you all this month on September 25th.
Charity Sew also appreciates those of you who
purchased items from our sale table at the August
meeting. A total of $68 was raised toward the purchase
of a roll of batting for quilting.
If you are working on quilt tops at home, please continue
to do so and turn them in when they are finished. Items
may be picked up or brought to Shalimar on any
Wednesday between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, as well as
at the monthly Guild meeting.
The Wednesday Charity Sew group is always delighted
to have new members. If you have some free time on a
Wednesday, join in on the comradery. Stop in for a visit
or join us to sew and enjoy the satisfaction of helping
those in need.
Come join our fun and productive group.
YOU ARE ALWAYS
WELCOME!

Quilt Show 2020 - Frequently Asked Questions
Ok, what are some of your questions?
Pam: [email protected] Janie: [email protected]
Quilt Show Committee - Our next meeting is September 12, 2019 at 9:30 am
at Shalimar Mobile Home Village Clubhouse
Do you have questions about the Quilt Show? Please submit your questions to Janie Franco or Pam King. Here are a few: Q: I don't understand the Quilt Registration form where it says, “designate 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice”, do we have a limit per member of quilts to be shown? I would like to enter many categories. Are we limited to only 3 quilts? A: No. You can enter as many as you like. Rank them from 1 to however many quilts you are entering. After the Layout Committee looks at all the sizes, some may have to be cut due to space restrictions. The Layout Committee's aim is to hang all quilts entered. We just want to make sure that if cuts are made, the ones you want to show most will be hung. Q: Can I enter more than one quilt in a category? A: Yes, but only one can be judged per category. If you have two or more quilts in the same category, you must choose only one of those quilts to be judged. Q: Does my quilt have to be judged? A: No, you can choose to have it judged or not have it judged. Ribbons are only given out to judged quilts. We have two Nationally Qualified Judges contracted for this show. The cost to the Guild to bring in and host these judges is around $3500. Q: Why would I want my quilt judged? A: If you choose to have your quilt judged, you will receive great feedback from the judges on how to improve your quilting skills. As your quilt is judged, the scribes in the judging room write down what the judges say and this written form is passed on to you when you pick up your quilt at the end of the show. Also, only judged quilts will win a ribbon. Q: Can quilts hung in the show have "for sale" signs and be sold? A: No. Any quilt for sale must be in the Boutique. Q: Is there a large quilt auction? A: No Q: My quilt is wider than 100". Can I enter it in the Show? A: Sorry, no. The racks are engineered to hang 100 inch quilts or less. They can be longer than 100 inches but will have to be pinned so they don't drag on the floor. Q: Does my quilt need to be completed by October 17, deadline day for registering Quilt Show quilts? A: No. Just enough to submit a 4 x 6 picture with your quilt registration. The picture needs to be a photo quality picture, printed on photo paper from places such as Walmart, CVS or Walgreens, etc. Q: Can I register my quilt before October 17? A: Yes, Shirley Zerbe is the Registration Chair. This would make her very happy!! Q: Can I withdraw my quilt from the show after I have registered it?
A: Yes, However, advanced notice must be given. See policy on No-Show Penalty: No-Show Penalty: In order to avoid a $25 penalty on each quilt registered then withdrawn, you must give written notice to the Quilt Show Registrar, Shirley Zerbe, 7510 Handley Dr., Port Richey, FL 34668 postmarked no later than December 31, 2019 or emailed no later than December 31, 2019 to [email protected]. Written notice postmarked prior to December 31, 2019 will not be penalized. NOTE: Guild privileges (library, class discounts, membership renewal, etc.) are suspended until the penalty is paid. Q: Does my quilt need a sleeve? A: Yes, a four inch sleeve is required. The quilt is hung on a rod, not pinned, so a sleeve is the only way to hang the quilt. Q: Is there a fee for entering my quilt in the show? A: Not at this time. The member entering the quilt will be required to volunteer in some capacity at the show. For each quilt you enter, we are expecting the member to volunteer at least 2 hours of time to help during Quilt Show week. For example, if you enter 5 quilts, we expect 10 hours of volunteer time. FYI many of our members who help make this show great volunteer WAY more than 2 hours for each quilt they enter. We need all members to help out in some capacity. You know what Grandma used to say, “More hands make less work”.
Quilt Show information continues on page 8, 23 & 24

Small Quilt Silent Auction
There are currently only 81 quilts for the Small
Quilt Silent Auction and the goal is 200. Please help achieve this goal! We need to get busy as a Guild. We can do this! Small quilts are fast to make and great to practice your FMQ. You can use orphan blocks or test a pattern you have always wanted to try. Turn those UFO blocks into a small quilt. Small quilts must be no larger than 100 inches total, but can be smaller. ALL Auction proceeds will benefit: New Port Richey Recreation Center Kids programs. For more details check our Members Only website under Quilt Show Info or contact: Dannee Brooks 727-207-0478

Please review page 22 for our Boutique Guidelines. If you have any questions, feel free to call me. If you are interested in working in the Boutique or helping to set up the Boutique, please send me your name and what you are interested in doing. Remember, if you want to enter items in the Boutique on consignment, you must turn in six completed Boutique projects. If you want to use other projects as your six, please get them approved first.
There are many projects still out there, please bring

Fabric Scraps Project 2020
Don’t forget to save your leftover quilting fabric for the Quilt Show scrap bags. Any size fabric is needed, but if
it is less than the size of a fat quarter, please iron and fold each piece to 3”x5” size. Other larger pieces will be
cut into useful squares, strips, etc.
We can also use UFOs and LOPs (leftover pieces) from your last project. Hopefully these can be recycled
into another project. It helps if you can put LOPs into sandwich or storage bags to keep small pieces together.
There will be a scrap bag box at Shalimar on Wednesdays. You can also bring fabric to leave in the scrap bag
box
at the next WPQG Guild meeting, or call me and I will pick up your fabric donations.
We also need plastic and cardboard boxes in good condition to be used to store fabric.
I am looking for volunteers to sort and bag fabric at my house on Friday Oct 4 and on Friday Oct 18 at 10 a.m.
My sewing area can accommodate up to five people at a time. Please call me if you can help.
It will be greatly appreciated.
This is a great way to support the Quilt Show while putting your
unused fabric to good use. Also contact me with any questions.
Thanks,
Nancy Simmonds (315-246-0270) [email protected]
Are you aware that our Guild now manages TWO scholarship funds?! As usual, we are continuing to award two $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school graduates in Pasco County who are pursuing high-er education in a field of the Arts. We’re now ALSO considering applications for the Nita & Carl Fox Scholarship (NCFS) to support a member of the West Pasco Quilters’ Guild or a family member who has been accepted into an accredited insti-tute or higher programs of learning! The NCFS Fund stems from an original donation by the Fox family for scholarships awarded in amounts determined by the balance available. Additional monies may be added to the NCFS through personal donations or from designated Guild activities. We’re hoping to be able to continue offering this scholarship for many years to come. Eligible applicants for the scholarship are as follows: Any member of WPQG in good standing and their family members, limited to spouses, children (both biological and step-children), grandchildren or great-grandchildren. You will find the application form in the Members Only section of the WPQG website. Completed applications should be submitted by e-mail to me, Libbie Ellis ([email protected]), Chair of the Scholarship Committee, no later than April 1. (Yes, April Fools’ Day, but we’re not foolin’!) In April, the Scholarship Committee will review all applications and make a recommendation to the Executive Board. If you have an interest in participating in this committee, talk to me at a Guild meeting or send me an e-mail. We “meet/work” via e-mail and only for a little time in February and now a little time in April. Easy & interesting! Upon verification, a check will be submitted to the accredited institution at which our selected recipient has been accept-ed and enrolled. If there is no qualified candidate in a given year, the money will be held in the Nita & Carl Fox Scholarship Fund for the following year. So think hard about schooling to fulfill a dream of your own!!! Ask around among your family members!!! You just might qualify for some financial assistance from your quilting Guild!!!
Thank you,
Libbie Ellis

LITTLE LIBRARY
Be sure to visit the
Library Book Collection List on our Members Only page!
It was wonderful being back in our Rec Center home with all of our library materials
at hand. Wrapping the shelves in plastic for the summer worked beautifully to keep
them safe and clean in the storage area.
Thank you to the members who saved their donations for the August meeting:
Maryann Swogger, Linda Fernandes, Jeanette Lupis, Kathy Risoldi, Merna Allen,
Rita Weitendorf, Edda Juhl, Elaine Donnelly, and Sharyn Wilcox. We also received
donations from Charlie Giacchino from Singer Sewing Center.
The Member Giveaway Table is back! The library will be actively transitioning books
from the Sales rack to it every month. Come take a look and take something home for
FREE!
September will be our Fall BOGO sale... buy one book and get another of the same
or lesser value for FREE! Magazines will be 2 for 25¢ or 10 for $1.00.
We are open to take donations again. QUILTING BOOKS AND QUILTING
MAGAZINES ONLY, PLEASE. Your generous donations are the reason our library is
one of the best Guild libraries around! We look forward to seeing you and helping you
find anything you may need.

Welcome Home! Art Quilts for Habitat for Humanity Beginning in September, several WPQG committees will join forces for a new charity project featuring West Pasco Habitat for Humanity. Art quilts featuring houses will be donated to new Habitat owners as they receive their homes. We will be part of their official presentation as they "take ownership" of their homes. We are calling this project, “WELCOME HOME! “. Judy Nichols and Kathy Sonosky will be guiding it for WPQG. Quilts will be created through the Monthly Art Challenge, encouraging members to "add a house" to the quilts they create for the monthly theme. “Welcome Home!” quilts will need to be 14" square and hung with rings sewn into the top corners rather than a hanging sleeve. Quilts can be created in any style (patchwork, applique, improv pieced, traditional or modern). They must depict any kind of a house, in a city, country, beach, or neighborhood in any season. Quilts may include trees, flowers, people, children, swings, basketball hoops, kites, balloons, bicycles, vehicles, etc. They can be embellished or plain. The Community Outreach committee will handle the actual donation of these quilts. At our September Guild meeting we will welcome Patty Sutton, Vice President of Development for West Pasco County Habitat for Humanity. She will visit our Guild to get to know us better and give a presentation about the “WELCOME HOME!” Art Quilt Project. Want to learn more about making Habitat quilts? The Education Committee will be offering a class on October 17th, where Judy Nichols will introduce the project and teach us how to make a fused-applique quilt, with a house on it! Sign up at the Education table at September's meeting and pick up a class description and supply list. This project was inspired by an article in Quilting Arts Magazine, Oct/Nov 2018, that highlighted Jamie Fingal, who first developed the idea for homeless women and children, and expanded it to Habitat for Humanity in California. (Check out Jamie's website: The House Quilt Project. The magazine challenged readers to create "house quilts" for Habitat for Humanity, and the response was overwhelming! The resulting quilts were sent across the US to exhibits in quilt shows and sewing expos. If you attended Lakeland's Sewing Expo this year, you may have seen some of those challenge quilts hanging in a side exhibit area. We encourage you to make one today!!!

Preemie Sewers Thank you to everyone who donated time and items last month. In August, we delivered 158 preemie shirts,10 blankie/hat sets for girls,10 blankie/hat sets for boys, and 15 developmental heart sets. We will need at least as many this month and next. In September, we will meet in the Palm Room of the NPR Rec Center following the Guild meeting on Sept. 19. We meet from 12pm to 4pm. I will provide a casual lunch, so please let me know if you are attending and if any dietary restrictions apply. Our goal will be to sew preemie shirts. We'll work on shirts of any theme (just really cute fabrics) for delivery in Sept. We will also begin on our Halloween shirts for the preemies to be delivered in Oct. I'd at least like to have little pumpkin hats or candy corn hats for the babies in Trinity Med, so if you are interested in crocheting or knitting hats, please bring your soft yarn, knitting needles and/or crochet hooks. If you have any questions please contact me. Thank you!

2020 QUILT SHOW BOUTIQUE GUIDELINES
Here’s some information about consigning – it’s a great way to help support the Guild and
make yourself a little extra spending money. Let me know if you have any questions.
The Boutique is our store which is set up during the Biennial Quilt Show. All items for sale are donated or
put on consignment by our Guild members. In order to consign items, the member must donate six
approved Boutique projects/items.
You can donate items several different ways:
1. You can take workshops offered by the Boutique. The workshop is free and instruction is given by a
qualified teacher/member. The first item you make is donated to the Boutique. You will then have
the knowledge to make one for yourself.
2. You can work alone, or in a group, and make qualified items. (Qualified means one of our online projects
or to get your project approved.)
3. If you don’t have time to sew, you can donate any sewing aids, kits, rulers, quilt frames or anything quilt
related as long as the item is clean and in good condition. (Smaller items may only count as a partial
“project” towards your six needed to consign.)
4. Donated items can be turned in to the Boutique Chairperson throughout the year. The Chairperson will
keep a record of all donated items and price each item.
CONSIGNMENT ITEMS:
The consignment program is open to every Guild member. You price your items and if sold, the Guild gets
15%. If not sold, items will be returned to you at the end of the show. YOU WILL NEED TO PICK UP YOUR
ITEMS ONE HOUR AFTER THE SHOW CLOSES. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO BE THERE, YOU MUST MAKE
ARRANGEMENTS IN WRITING FOR ANOTHER MEMBER TO PICK UP YOUR ITEMS.
Requirements of a consignment item:
You must have turned in your 6 items to qualify.
Each item has to be valued at $10 or more.
All items must be clean, odor free and pet hair free.
All items must be handmade/sewn and not made commercially.
We hope that everyone participates in the Boutique. It can be successful if it is well stocked
with “quality” items. Let’s make this Quilt Show the best one yet! -- Terri McConn

Quilt Registration Guidelines
Sew Many Quilts 2020—Eye of the Quilter
Quilt Show February 21, 22, 23, 2020; Form Deadline: October 17, 2019
Note: Due to the limitations of the quilt racks, quilts longer than 95 inches may be folded and pinned. Quilts wider than 100” will not be accepted. Quilts do NOT need to be completely finished by the October 17
th deadline.
Appliqué – Wall: Quilt top should be predominantly constructed using any appliqué technique. Length plus width must be no more than 120 inches. Example: 60” by 60” Appliqué – Large: Quilt top should be predominantly constructed using any appliqué technique. Width 61”-100”. Art: Quilt top with substantial deviation from traditional patterns and sets. Emphasis should be on color/design. Group – All Techniques: Quilt top has been constructed by more than one person. Examples: antique blocks, round robin, block of the month, mother/daughter, healing hearts. Machine Embroidery: The quilt top must incorporate machine executed embroidered blocks or machine embroidered appliqués or motifs as a significant design element that represents 60% of the quilt. Hand embroidery is not allowed in this category. Miniature: All aspects of the quilt must be reduced in scale – blocks, borders, and binding. The overall maximum size is 24” by 24”. Miscellaneous Techniques: Any style quilt top that does not obviously fall into any other category–such as yo-yo, whole cloth, photo, crazy quilt, hand embroidery, stenciled/crayon/painted, boutis. machine and machine sits on or is mounted on a table. The stitching must predominantly use this method.
Movable Quilting Machine: includes any sewing machine that allows the quilter to move the machine head rather than the
fabric and machine is mounted on a frame. The stitching must predominantly use this method.
Hand Quilted: 100% of the quilting is done by hand.
Quilt Criteria
1. Quilts must have been finished within the last two years and may not have been previously exhibited at
one of WPQG’s past quilt shows.

5. Any quilt using a pre-printed panel in its whole form will not be accepted.
6. Any quilt in a commercial frame or decorative hanger will not be accepted due to insurance regulations.
7. Quilts with an estimated value of $1,000 or greater require a written appraisal. A copy of the appraisal must be
included with the registration form.
8. The Registration Committee may move a quilt into a different category.
9. On the registration form, be sure to complete the box to designate your 1st, 2

Several members have requested that we refrain from using perfume when we are in confined spaces, such as Contractors,
workshops, and small groups. Unfortunately, as we all get older, health conditions are not conducive to perfumes
and can cause breathing problems, migraines, etc., so please keep that in mind. Thank you.
