Blast. tram t.he Past.

Once again this year we are running the popular feature Blast from the Past. We will endeavour to cover as vast a cross section as possible across the Riverina and we trust that you find it interesting reading. This week is obviously the last segment for 2006 and we feature a real gentleman of the game. This week we review the career of former Wagga Tigers centreman, Peter Friedlieb

Name: Peter Friedlieb

Details of Playing / Coaching Career: Played Juniors with St. Pat's in Albury. Albury Tigers in the O&M. Western Suburbs in the SFL. Wagga Tigers in the Farrer League.

Awards / Medals Received: Albury Junior League Best & Fairest. Best & Fairest at St. Pat's, Albury. Best & Fairest with Albury ngers. Best & Fairest at Wagga Tigers. Represented Farrer League.

Favourite Playing Position: Centre and Back Pocket

Most Respected Opponents: Neville Hogan (Wangaratta Rovers)

Best Player Seen: Gary Ablett

AFL Club I Follow: Richmond

Current Occupation: Lawyer

Where do you see local AFL heading in the future? Wagga Tigers becoming the local representative team with RFL and FFL Leagues being the feeder clubs.

Peter Friedlieb was certainly one of THE gentleman of the game. He arrived at Wagga Tigers with an envious reputation and he gave the Tigers many years of invaluable service. He was a very gutsy player who was more at home in and under neath packs than he was out in the open. He had very good skills and although was very adapt to a defensive role he was probably more value to his team playing in the centre. He played under some very well credentialed coaches at ngers and two that come readily to mind were Doug Priest and Col Anderson . Tigers had some very good sides during his days there and some of his team mates were Peter "Pebbles" Power, Allan Parr, Allen MacMillan, Phil Osbeiston and Greg Sheather. Peter was one of those players who made many friendships during his football career with team mates as well as his opponents. He was always one of the first players to arrive at the oppositions water hole after the match to have a drink and a chat about the game. Peter is still involved in football and assists in any matters that require independent investigation by the Southern NSW/AFL. He has a passion for race horses now but still gels to the odd game of footy to rekindle those old friendships. So if you see Peter at the races or the footy give him a wave and tell him that you enjoyed his Blast from the Past

WHAT THE OTHER CAOCH'S PREDICT ANO WHY

The six non participating coaches in the Riverina League, namely Jamie Grintell (Narrandera), Andy Dowdle (Turvey Park), Barry O'Brien (MCU-E), Pat Gribble (Eastern Hawks) and Luke Mclean (Griffith) have been contacted and asked to give their selection and how they arrived at that selection. Here are their

responses.

Jamie Grintell (Narrandera) selects GGGM "The Lions have too much ciass all over the ground. If they do get any injuries they always have someone who can step into that position. They have no weak links. The key to Leeton's

chances revolve around Jamie Broadbent. He is a great leader and will be doing everything possible for victory. But Ganmain

will be too strong and will win".

Andy Dowdle (Turvey Park) selects GGGM "Ganmain has been the best side overall this year. They have

had a few injuries but have been able to cover them which shows their great depth. They are very strong all over the park. They will miss Shane Lenon but have the depth to cover that

loss. They are a very complete team and one which would rival all the best sides in the RFL over the last twenty years".

Barry O'Brien (MCU-E) selects GGGM "I believe the biggest thing in Lions favour is that they are unbeatable in their set up at stoppages, they have a very

structured set up. The only chance that Leeton has is for all their players to play one on one. It might not be pretty football but that is their only chance, just like Richmond against Adelaide th is year. The depth of the Lions is such that their interchange

players would walk into any other sides starting line up".

Phone 6926 2552. Fax 6926 4376 Mobile 0412 752 471

Matt Hard (Coolamon) selects GGGM "Ganmain does not have a weakness. They have been the form

side all year. They have strength's in every line and are very difficult to match up on. As much as I would like to pick Jamie Broadbent and his boys I think it will be one way traffic. The

Lions have several options up forward which is always a bonus".

Pat Gribble (Eastern Hawks) selects GGGM "Ganmain has lo much strength across the field with potential

winners on all lines. I also think that Leeton will struggle to erase the second semi final result".

Luke McLean (Griffith) selects GGGM " I think Ganmain will win because they are too strong all over the park. They have a terrific work rate and have been there,

done that before. I think their experience wi ll be a telling factor".

So there we have it from the six non participating coaches. It's been a unanimous decision to select the GGGM Lions. But odds on favourites don't always greet the judge as Stephen Bradbury proved when he won gold for Australia at the Olympics. There is no such thing as a sure thing so lets sit down and see what

happens in today's RFL Grand Final.

RIVERIN.A FOOTBALL LEAGUE GRAND FINAL 2006 • 10

' , .

RFL EDITORIAL

Tremendous weather conditions have been experienced in all finals matches and last week was no exception. At three quarter time last week Griffith looked all set to parcel up a spot in their third grand final in four years. But the Leeton boys had other ideas and put in a sensational last quarter to race away to a 28 point win. Seven goals to one in the final stanza was the ideal way to round off a preliminary final and the Crows deservedly get another crack at the Lions today. In the Reserves the Eastern Hawks continue to be represented in this year's finals series after a gritty 26 point win over Narrandera. The Hawks had a big last quarter also and they will go into match with plenty of confidence. In the U18's the young Leeton-Whitton boys had a battle on their hands all day and it took the full four quarters to shake off a very determined MCU-E outfit.

After 18 rounds of home and away matches and 5 finals games we are down to the last, and most important game of the year. The two combatants are the GGGM Lions and the Leeton-Whitton Crows. It is fitting that these sides are the contestants that are playing off as they fin ished off first and second on the ladder. The Lions finished the season as minor premiers and go into the grand final as raging favourites after their ultra impressive display in the 2"' semi final. They were awesome in that match but I know that coach, Christin Macri, would have kept a lid on things over the last fortnight and be concentrating solely on the confrontation that they will get today. The strength of their side has been well documented by all media outlets but they will be taking nothing for granted this afternoon. Their defence is superbly lead by Christen McPherson and Adam Symons with tremendous support from Luke Walsh, Brett Lenon and Drew Symons. Their midfield is their key with Christin Macri, Nathan McPherson, Chad Hamblin and Eddie Sullivan expected to gain plenty of possession. The on ball brigade of Marc Braybon, Scott Hamblin, Brandon Ryan and Matt Rava have been sensational all year. Their forward line boasts several scoring alternatives with George Carroll , Marc Geppert and Daniel Underwood being focal points. So you can see from a quick run through their side they have strengths all over the field with no visible weaknesses. But you cannot go into a grand final and just expect it to happen. We are forgetting that they have a very formidable opponent in the Leeton-Whitton Crows. They have had a very good season and defeating the Lions is nothing that they haven't already done this year - they did so in round 5 and to the tune of 30 points at Ganmain. They have a band of very

committed players who have lifted Leeton from the doldrums back onto the main stage of the RFL. Jamie Broadbent is the general of their defence and he will get great support from Greg Looby, Ben Dryburgh, Travis Irvin and Daniel Sullivan. Matt Sharman gives plenty of experience to the midfield and he will receive great support from young Bradley Boots and David Elwin. They also have a very effective on ball trio and Kurt Bullock, Simon Piltz and Drew Dunscombe can match ii with the best of them. They have comparable potency up forward with Damian Lang being their main focal point. You don't kick a hundred goals in a season without being able to play a bit and they will be pinning the bulk of their scoring on his shoulders. Daryl Clayton, Danny Baxter, Matt Lang and Graeme Dale will provide alternate options if he is restricted. Grand Finals are completely different to any other game during the year and nothing can be taken for granted. All the experts are tipping a one sided affair with the Lions prevailing . I think it will be a lot closer than most expect and I'm tipping the Crows to put in a big effort. The most unexpected is quite capable of happening when most unexpected and that is a possibi lity today. All the very best to both sides.

The Reserves should be real battle between the MCU-E Goannas and the Eastern Hawks. Mango won through after a decisive win in the second semi and they will start slight favourites. Key players for them will be Craig Websdale, Peter Treloar, Tim Smeeth, Jeff Millar and Peter Byrne. The Hawks have finished the season off very well and will be quietly confident of victory. Brett Limbrick has lead the side very well all year and Craig DePiazza, Dean Spencer, Marl< Adams and Damien Cheney will be leading players also. This could go either way both sides capable of victory.

The day kicks off with what promises to be a great game of football between the GGGM and Leeton-Whitton Under 18's. Th is could quite easily be the closest game of the day. The Lions lowered the Crows colours for the first time this year in the 2"" semi but the Crows will be out for revenge today. Some tremendous talent will be on display in this match and a winner cannot be decided upon with any certainty.

So at 5pm the curtain falls on another successful season of football in the RFL. I hope that all players and supporters enjoy the days activities and the season finishes the way you want it to. Thought for the Year: Self trust is the first secret of success.

MANGOPLAH-C-U-EASTLAKES NOTES

Last weekend our U 1 B's and C Graders did battle for a place in the grand final. The U1 B's went down fighting in a relatively close game against the Crows and C Grade had an even closer game going down by 2 goals against Griffith.

But today it's all about our Ressies who take on Eastern Hawks for the Reserve Grade Premiership. Good luck today boys and we guarantee the Mango Army will be out in force cheering you on. Up the plah!

EASTERN HAWKS NOTES

Building the Future with the Paul Bourne Homes Eastern Hawt<s Wow - what a day a win and into the Grand Final for our Reserves. It

doesn't get much better except perhaps the Grand Final win and that is in the lap of the Gods and no doubt the Mango boys want to have a say as well.

With nothing to lose and our season on the line the Ressies stepped up lo the plate and played a superb game of committed and disciplined Footy. Limo and Al certainly had the boys switched right on and they delivered the goods. It's not easy to play the Eagles on their own ground during the home and away season let alone in a cutthroat final but the challenge was met with the commitment required to win the game. For 3 quarters there was no more than a goal between the two teams in a high quality game and it looked like it would go right down to the wire for a result. However we were able to break the shackles mid way through the last quarter and retain our discipline to run out comfortable winners.

We had good players right across the field with all contributing at various stages. Our better players on the day were Paul Hull - was the Players choice and showed the skill that has had him among the Hawks better players over the years. Craig DePiazza gave his opponent a good run around and consistently found space to give us a great avenue forward . Josh Hack put in a superb effort to win many kicks and repel a number of attacks as did Mark Adams, Joel Grieve, Brett Limbrick and Tom Green. Overall a good team effort that augers well for the big one this week.

Best of luck to all Grand Final teams today, may the reward that you achieve be what you have earnt. Commiserations to all sides not playing today and thanks for the competition throughout the year.

Today there is no tomorrow as the winner takes all. We have the side to take the title as long as we play as we did in the Preliminary Final, so the ball is in your court boys, go to it and bring home the bacon. After the game it's back to the Kooringal Hotel for drinks and Dinner then out to Gumly for the start of a long celebration. Good luck. Hawker.

LEETON-WHITTON CRONS

President's Message

The drought has finally broken after 28 years. The last time the first grade made the grand final was in 1978, then the Leeton Red Legs. Since the formation of the Leeton Whitton Crows in 1995 The U18s and 2nd grade were the only sides to make the Grands finals. The U18's winning the flag in 2003.

Congratulation to the Fist Grade side for making it to the 2006 Grand final.Your hard work and loyalty to club has finally paid off. Congratulations also to the U18,s minor premiers for 2006 and making it through to the Grand final. I would like to congratulate the first grand co-coaches Jamie Broadbent and Damien Lang and the U18,s Coach Travis Irvin and his assistant coach Kerry Vaughan-niven and our selectors for putting in the hard work for this special day I should also mention the Strappers and Carl for looking after the players.

It has been a very successful year for not only making the Grand final but having players polling well in the RFL vote count at the league presentation night EQQll2a!l 1st Grade Jamie Broadbent and Drew Dunscombe, U18's Nick Doolin and Leading Goal kicker Nathan Schubert. Netball A Grade Kelly Harrison.

The Committee, Supporter and Sponsors are very proud of your achievements this season.

I would like to also thank our loyal sponsors, hard working committee and volunteers for making the 2006 season a very successful one. Today is your reward.

Congratulation to all Clubs participating in football and netball today.

John Jackson President

Leeton-Whitton Football Club

Leeton-Whitton Club Notes

What a fantastic way to finish the season. The U18,s and 1st grade advancing into the grand final.The1 st Grade game was one of the best played all year. To Griffiths credit they kept coming back at us. The Lead changed several times keeping the supporters on the edge of their seats. Its is what finals are all about. You made history last week being the first 1st Grade side to make ii to the grand final since the Leeton Whitton Crows were formed in 1995. Congratulations to you all. Damien Lang played his so~ 1st grade game last week I thought I may have put him of by announcing it in last weeks report. Today's game against defending premier's GGGM will be a huge challenge. As Jamie said someone did finally climb Mt Everest. Go out and give it all you have anything is possible.

The U18 They have also finished of a perfect seasons by getting over a very determined Mango side. The supporters who managed to get to the game were treated to some very entertaining and high standard football from both sides. Today game against GGGM should be at the same level Finish ii of by bringing home the flag.

Netball - Unfortunately both A grade and Juniors lost last week in very close matches. A grade came out firing and continued on but Coolaman scored the last goal of the match to eventual wining by one goal. The girls should be justifiably proud of their year, they worked very hard but just fell short in a close and hart stopping match.

Narrandera defeated the Juniors by 3 goals, 26-23. This match was a very high standard junior game, and also exciting. The Juniors did everything they could and played their best game for the season. They were leading by 2 at 3-quarter time, but were over run by Narrandera. Again the girls should be very proud of their efforts.

Congratulations to all the netball sides for making it to the finals. This will be a valuable experience for all players for the 2007 season.

Congratulations and good luck to the Grand final teams today. You have all worked very hard for the ultimate glory.

Just a reminder that the PresentationNote count night will be held on the 7 October at the MIA sports club. The night will include a meal and band. Details will be in the paper.

~ tJ,«,w; tJ,«,w; ~ Nathan McPherson (18) Part of the Lions very talented midfield who is relentless in his attack on the footy. Can be as dangerous up forward and if given a sniff of the goals he wil l make the opposition pay. His efforts this year have been rewarded with selection in the NSW state side. Watch out for this damaging left footer.

Mitchell Steele (7) Has played wing nearly all year and gives the Lions tremendous drive from that position. Has plenty of pace and very good skills either side of the body. Loves to run the ball into the forward line and delivers to the Lions forwards with great accuracy. Doesn't mind having a shot himself.

Adam Symons (1 4) Plays in the key defensive roll of fullback. Will have the job of restricting Damian Lang. They call him the Scrooge of the backline because of his dislike to the opposition scoring. He is a very close checking player who will be giving his all today. Has had a very consistent season.

Christen McPherson (12) Needs no introduction to finals footy or Narrandera Sportsground. One of the most complete players in the competition who knows exactly what is expected today. Has all the skills to make it extremely difficult for the Crows forwards to get on lop. Expect a big one from th is leading Lion.

Drew Dunscombe (4) A very skillful rover who can create plenty of headaches for the opposition. Has had a tremendous season as his voting in the Quinn Medal indicates. Loves to run with the footy and you can be sure that he will be doing his bit to make sure that the Crows are in with a show.

Bradley Boots (48) At only seventeen years old he plays with the maturity of a much more seasoned player. He has had a very good season from the wing and he wi ll continue that form in today's big decider. Has tremendous pace and he will be constantly lobbing the footy into the Crows forward line.

Kurt Bullock (41) Captain of the side who leads by example. Will have to shoulder the bulk of the ruck duties against the Lions duo but is used to work loads like this . What he gives away in centimeters he makes up for in guts and determination. You can be sure that number 41 wi ll be giving 110% today.

Damian Lang (9) Has been the Crows main focal point up forward this year and he is capable of kicking a winning score off his own boot. A very experienced player who has plenty of finals experience. Cocoach of the Crows and is a local junior. If he starts off well it is a good sign and anything could happen.

RIVERINA FOOTBALL LEACUE GRAND FINAL 2006 • 27

I

RFL Netball lirand Final

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

On behalf of the Riverina Netball League executive, I would like to thank all teams and players for their participation and patience this 2006 season. It has been a fantastic year of netball for all grades as I'm sure you would all agree, aside from some minor hiccups along our journey.

Sincere thanks to go out to the following people for their assistance this year: Brodie O'Connor, Cayley Brill, Sheree Rudd, Roz Fraser and Rebecca McGowan as the netball executive. Thanks also to Alatalo Brothers, our major sponsor and also to AFL House Wagga for their support this season.

I would like to ask all current players and prospective players to seriously think about taking on a role in the Riverina Netball League Executive for 2007 during this off season. Whist the roles are not difficult or time consuming, they are rewarding and I am sure there are many netballers out there who could easily take on these roles.

Congratulations to Coolamon, Turvey Park, Narrandera and Griffith for making the netball grand finals and best wishes to you all for today. Good Luck also to the boys with their respective grand finals.

GAME PREVIEWS

A Grade • Griffith v Coolamon Griffith go into the A grade game as hot favourites, having beaten Coolamon on every occasion during the home and away series. However the Coolamon team turned ii around last week in the preliminary final against Leeton-Whitton to win by a goal and have their spirits lifted going into the grand final. The Swans are dominant over the court with their height and the Hoppers will need to play a full four quarters of netball if they are to get over the line.

B grade - Griffith v Coolamon Griffith booked a spot in the grand final two weeks ago and waited for the result of the preliminary final which Coolamon took out by the narrowest of margins - one goal over Turvey Park. The Hoppers are the only team to upset the Swans during the season with a win over at Griffith in Round 17. With this in mind the Hoppers can upset the favourites in the B grade competition but will need to be on their game with accurate shooting and very tight defence to claim victory.

C grade • Turvey Park v Griffith Griffith finished the home and away season undefeated, but have a big task ahead of them this weekend against Turvey Park. The Bulldogs were the first in to the grand final after defeating the Swans in the Major Semi-final and will be keen to see the same result on Sunday. The Swans will need to be on their game at Narrandera as the Bulldogs have fired at the right end of the season. Will certainly be a hard fought contest.

Juniors - Griffith v Narrandera Griffith have been the form side in the junior competition all year and will go in as favourites in the Grand Final on Sunday. Narrandera has fought hard during the finals series to have the chance to upset the top team. The Eagles had a three-goal win over Leeton-Whitton in the Preliminary final and will need every played on the court to lift and be counted in the big game on Sunday.
