Wow, lots of stuff going on in the near future. The BCA SW Regional is in September and the SW Pocket Billiards Championships are coming up in October at Bullshooters. Not to mention big tourneys for the APA, Tap and AZPL I would like to welcome Tobacco Mizer to the paper. They are located on 43rd and Peoria. If you are a smoker, you really should check them out. Is it just me, or are the Tucson players starting to go back home with Phoenix pool players money? On the dart front, it was nice to see Dale and Nikki work together to keep the My Ole Man’s Saturday tourney alive at Stingers. Any event that has been going on as long as that event has, deserves to stay alive. Things are delayed on the “Arizona All Stars List”. Hope to have more news on this one in the coming months.

Ed Scott undefeated at Knobbys

Knobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday August 5, 2011. The competition is always tough and they always treat the players with a great dinner. Ed Scott captured the hot seat with a 2-0 win over Vilene Stutesman. Jose Gonzalez then played Vilene beating her 2-0. Ed and Jose battled it out with Ed breaking and running out the first game. The second game saw Jose get an 8 ball break. The third game became a safety battle until Jose scratched and Ed got out with 4 balls on the table. Congratulations to Ed Scott for a $210.00 1st place finish. Jose Gonza-lez took a 2nd place finish of $110.00 and Vilene Stutesman took home $30.00 for 3rd place. Knobby’s next open 8 ball tournament will be held Friday September 9, 2011. Come on out and join the fun.

Vilene Stutesman, Ed Scott and Jose Garcia

Fast Lenny Wins One Pocket Madness Saturday August 13th, sixteen of the State’s best showed up to battle it out in the Monthly Bullshooters One Pocket Tournament.

Play got un-derway right on-time with a full field of 16. Players dispatched to the “One Loss” side would have one more chance to make a run for it, in this “True Double Elimination” format. In some of the upset matches we saw Mike Lalumiere dispatch Preach-er Ronn 2/0, and young gun Bobby Emmons steam roll Bret Huth. Where else can a 7 beat a 10, in One Pocket? For a day of fun and pool this is as good as it gets. Gus Briseno and 11 other players would eventually hit the road leaving four players for the cash.

In the end, it would be Tres Kane taking 4th and Bobby Emmons 3rd. Down to the wire we’d see two players battling for first and second despite having their numbers raised last month. Defying all expectations Lenny Marshall would de-feat Bernie Pettipiece taking home 1st place, and his first ever win. Great going Lenny, you are “The Man”.

A special thanks to Mike and Julie of Bullshooters for hosting the tour-nament along with the added prize money.

Payouts were as follows:1st Lenny Marshall $2502nd Bernie Pettipiece $180 (who also won the $80 side pot)3rd Bobby Emmons $1004th Tres Kane $50

Arizona Billiard & Dart News September 2011APA Junior/Adult Scotch Doubles

19 young juniors brought their adult shooting partners (and their A games) with them to the APA “Junior/Adult Scotch Doubles” tournament held at Bullshooters on July 24th. This tournament is fast becoming one of the most popu-

lar tournaments in Phoenix according to Gina Nowlin, the local APA League Operator. At the end of each session, APA holds their Awards banquet and the Junior/Adult tournament, in which the kids can pick an adult of their choice to play in a scotch doubles tourney. The 8 ball, double elimination tournament was a race to a predetermined handicap and played on the 8 foot tables. The 1st place winners of this summer’s event was Michael Dale and Ralph Craig, 2nd place was Mark and Carlos Avalos and 3rd place going to Michael Flinn and Adam Langley. All three teams received trophies and Water park passes. Other teams that were very competitive were Rick and Jeremy Toennis, a father and son team and Tye and Selina West, grandfather and granddaughter. This event is always a fun time loaded with excitement for everyone given the fact that the kids are involved. The sportsmanship was amazing between all the participants, and the play wasn’t all that bad either. Some of the top Arizona rated players are in for some stiff competition from these juniors in just a few years. Anyone that loves the game should come and witness this tournament at least once. Another happening on this day was a very special award to two junior players. Claudette Metz, one of APA’s very special adult players won two cues in a raffle earlier in the year and wanted to do something nice to help out the kids. She presented Christian and Cameron Gerstner with the cues. Way to go Claudette. Aydn Avalos and Jahnythan Craig were also awarded with what we in the APA call the “I Beat the League Operator” patch for beating Doug Nowlin. These two 7 year olds are awesome pool players. All the Junior’s were awarded trophies for their participation in the Juniors program and Mark Avalos did especially well winning the overall “Top Gun” award. In the last year and a half, the Juniors division has grown from 4 to over 25 players ranging in age from 5 to 16 years old. In fact, Gina says, we are grow-ing so fast we have plans to divide the division into 2 age groups this session. The Juniors play every other Sunday at Bullshooters, located at Peoria and 35th Ave. Play starts at 1 in the afternoon and each player will play two matches with opponents of their own skill level, usually consisting of a race to 2 games. Anyone interested in joining the Juniors division, or any other 8 ball and 9 ball division should call Gina Nowlin at 602-920-9193.

Jerry, a veteran of the Vietnam War, has played pool for over 55 years and com-mands the table when he’s playing his match. He plays in the Phoenix TAP League three nights a week and supports his team with superior pool playing. With all of those years of experience un-der his belt, he is also an excellent coach-ing resource. There isn’t a shot on the table that Jerry hasn’t seen or attempted to master.

In addition to his pool-playing abilities, Jerry is skilled in woodworking and personally designed one-of-a-kind cues for his cue collection and a wooden “coffin” case that is so impres-sive that you can’t help but notice it when he walks in the room. These skills carried over when he funded, designed and built the, much needed, tables for the seating area in the pool room at Skip & Jan’s in Tempe, AZ. Mind you, these aren’t your everyday-type tables – he thought of everything – underneath each table there are half-circle cutouts to set your case and a shelf for the ladies to set their purses. This leaves the top of the table for food and drinks while you play a match.

Thanks to Jerry, all of the twelve 9’ tables at Skip & Jan’s are back in tip-top shape – the best they’ve ever been - and there are enough bar stools for everyone to have a seat, especially during league night and tourna-ments. Jerry spent a considerable amount of money and time assisting the table reconstruction crew to make sure everything was perfect.

Because of his determination, talent, experience and love of the game, Jerry Hartnett has made playing pool in the Phoenix TAP League more exciting than ever. We appreciate Jerry’s commitment to the billiard industry and his dedication to the league. Thank you!

Spring 2011Titleholder Winners

Congratulations to the titleholder’s winners for the spring 2011 session.

These 10 teams will compete against 20 other teams on August 20th, 21st and 27th to determine which teams qualify for the TAP Nationals in Las Vegas scheduled for November 10th - 14th, 2011.

Sixteen teams will go to the Championship board on August 27th. Of the sixteen teams - six will go to Nationals and, according to National rules, all player’s National fund money will be distributed to the six teams go-ing.

Each of the six teams will receive a voucher to cover hotel and entry fees – additional money earned will be based on performance placement in the tournament.

A Good Plan

On August 13th-14th, 2011, Stinger’s Sports Bar in Glendale, AZ, decided to throw some Guaranteed Added Money out to the players of Arizona. The event was Bar Table 8-ball on the 10 Diamond Tables and began right on schedule at 12 Noon Saturday. The players across the State came out to show their support and appreciation for the $750 Added Guarantee. 47 Players ended up getting signed up by the deadline and another 8 players had to be turned away as they showed up late. The tournament was mimicked off of the DCT (Desert Classic Tour) format and was a B & Below Only tournament. Entries were staggered based on ratings and so were the races. B’s paid $35 entry and raced to 6 games, C’s paid $25 and raced to 5 games and D’s paid $15 and raced to 4 games. The pot grew fairly large quickly as many took advantage of the sidepots offered. $10, $20 and a $30 Winner Take All Pot. In addition there was a C Player & Below sidepot offered for $10. The entire payout of the tournament equaled $3,640.

With the large field it was very difficult to pick favorites right out of the gates, and many top rated players stumbled early. Quickly the left side of the board filled with 8-ball monsters who faced early elimination matches: Bernie Store, Oscar Avila, Bob Soto, Sara Miller, Jerry Stuckart, Sophia Morquecho, Carlos Avalos, Susan Williams, Mike Hammon, Derek Austin, Todd Rowitz, Ben Sutherland, Brian Reich, Hopell Ampongan and many more.

The winners side of the board was fierce and after 3 rounds of play the final 8 on the winners had great matches to sweat. Ray Shobe vs Jason Polk, Burt Balancad vs Chad Barber, Jon Rowe vs Art St. Germain and Derek Cumm vs Matt Kwasny. Jason Polk advanced in a hill-hill battle and Burt advanced by the same score. Art and Derek both won by large margins and continued their really strong play.

At the end of Saturday nights play, we were down to the final 12 players that would all return on Sunday in the Money. Although there was one player that did get some cash on Saturday. Sophia Morquecho was the winner of the C & below sidepot and took home $70.

Returning at Noon on Sunday were one-loss side matches of Frank Wellman vs Jon Rowe, Marvin Lawson vs Matt Kwasny, Mike Hammon vs Ray Shobe and Ed Scott vs Chad Barber. Jon won a nail biter at 6-5 over Frank and Mike Hammon dispersed Ray Shobe with the identical score. Frank, Marvin, Ray and Ed all took 9th-12th place and $50 each. Chad Barber won hill-hill over Mike Hammon in the next round and Jon Rowe sent Matt out tied for 7th-8th by a score of 6-2. Both received $75 for their top finish. Congratulations to Matt for the highest finish for a C player.

On the other side, Burt Balancad defeated Jason Polk and Art St. Germain defeated former National BCA 8-ball Champion Derek Cumm 6-2 to setup the hot seat match.

Stinger’s In-house players Jon Rowe and Chad Barber both battled opponents but it was only Jon that was able to advance past 5th-6th with a win over Jason Polk. Chad was handed his final loss 6-3 by Derek. Jason and Chad took home $140 which included a tie for 4th in the $10 sidepot. Jon and Derek then faced off in a great match for 4th place while the hotseat match was getting underway between Burt and Art.

Jon and Derek battled back and forth until they were tied at 5 in the race to 6. Derek seized control of the table in the final game and did not flounder as the 8-ball fell. Jon took home $315 for his efforts.

The hotseat match turned out to be very one-sided as Art didn’t miss a single ball and Burt’s minor mistakes put him down early. Art ran away with the match and secured his place in the finals by a score of 6-2.

The hangover of Burt’s first loss carried over a little bit into his 3rd place match with Derek when he made 2 mistakes and Derek jumped out to a 2-1 lead. He was down but not out as he flipped the score and doubled it winning 3 games in a row to be up 4-2. This was a great battle by both players and Burt came up dry on the break and Derek ran out to get it to 4-3 and then broke and ran to tie it up. Burt got his chance in the 9th game and ran all the way down but missed a crucial 8-ball with only one other stripe sitting in the jaws for Derek. And like all great players do, Derek stepped on the gas and broke and ran the final rack sending Burt out in 3rd place. Burt did not go empty handed though, as he took home $480 for 3rd place in the large field.

Derek was set to get his revenge in the finals against Art and to take home the large payday. Derek already secured $125 for 1st place in the $10 sidepot as Art didn’t get in it. The match kicked off with Art winning the first 2 games, then Derek getting one back. Derek broke well, but was forced to play an early safe by tying up some balls. Art picked his way through the rack, broke open clusters and sank the 8-ball to go up 3-1 before breaking and running the next rack to go up 4-1. Derek got another game, but that was the last he would get as Art ran out the final two racks very quickly and took home 1st place. Derek received $705 for 2nd place and Art took home $1440 which included a $540 Winner Take All sidepot.

A special thanks to Stingers for putting up the $750 Added, supporting the greens fee and open tables all weekend long and the wait staff for handling the large rush of players as early as 10 a.m. on Saturday Morning. AZPoolScene.com appreciates the support of the players and will continue to run like events as long as the players support the pool rooms. Stinger’s is holding a $500 Added 9-ball event on September 17th for 8 & Under.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News September 2011

By Mike Bates

Mike, been playing darts for a few years and have continued to get better, but everybody wants to tell me what I am doing wrong and how to get better, How do I know who to listen too?

Opinions from dart players are like a—Holes, everyone has one. There are certain play-ers out there who think that because they can throw darts at a high level, they can teach. I have always heard “those who can, do, and those who can’t teach. “

Anyway I hear players telling others how they are standing

wrong or leaning to much, etc. If ev-ery batting coach changed every batter to bat the same, I’m not sure it would work. Some players with the weirdest stances are Hall of Famers and guys with the “perfect stroke” like Travis Lee can’t hit his way out of a paper bag.

I am not a great teacher, but a few of the most important things in darts is concentration, follow through, and muscle memory. All those items can be achieved by one thing, practice.

Yes keeping your elbow in is impor-tant, but again there are great players who shoot with their elbow out. Some players lean forward and some lean back. Some hold their hand high,

some hold it low. Some have their foot sideways and some straight on to the board.

To me there is a basic way play darts and an advanced way. You definitely teach a beginner different from an established player. Mike Sexton looks like he will break his arm each throw, but shoots great and has for a long time. John gray shoots from his chest and Brad Halley has the weirdest grip ever, both have had success for a long time. Just watching our late great friend Don Henson throw a dart made me want to visit a chiropractor, but he shot great.

The bottom line is; to move up to the next level, you must put in the time.

Sometimes you hit a peak and there is no way you can get any better, but for years JC Marti-nez was an average player. He didn’t change anything, what he did is buy a dart board and practice. He set goals and when he reached them, he set higher goals. That is how you get better..

These are just my opinions and I may be wrong, but I doubt it……

Ask Mike

The Men’s Master’s A League was created in 1990. I (Mike Bates) had an idea to even out the leagues without using handicaps and also to bring Arizona darts to the highest level.

I approached my late friend Ron Schultz and Kris from Troy Vending to see if they could help me make it happen. It did, and the rest - as they say - is history.

Twenty one years, 56 seasons and over 500 different players have played in the Master’s A & B division.

This was the 40th season for the B division, which brought us some great play-ers like Kix Alcala, Pete Linaris, Martin Bedoni, Jay Moredock and many more. I believe it is the longest running continuous league in the country. If not, it is definitely the best.

When the league started, we had three top world class players (John Gray, Rich Finn & Brad Halley). Since then, we have had 26 players that have been on Team USA and numerous World Championships across the country.

Backed by Dart Master, the league is famous not only around the country, but known throughout the World. In the 56 seasons, we have paid out over $440,000.

I had the vision, but you - the players - made this happen. Because of the league and Arizona darts, some great players have moved here from states including Lucky Newbury, David Fatum, Eric Barron, Jimmy Damore, Tom McCartney, Thad Uraine and many others.

Why am I telling you this now? To blow my own horn? Heck no. I am doing this because at the beginning it was a very large group of players who made sure the league not only stayed alive, but made players better. If something didn’t go their way, they didn’t threaten to quit or give up or sit out next season. They worked together to make it better.

We didn’t have to beg people to play, we had 90 guys sign up. 32 A players and 40 B players (18 teams) in 2001.

So I bring this challenge to to you - if you truly care about the league and keep-ing Arizona darts at the top, sign up for next season and recruit players, whatev-er level they shoot. Respect the other teams, the league and the bars we play out of. Captains pick players that show up, don’t give up, pay their fees and battle to the end - not merely on stats or friendships. Pick players that fit well with your team. Keep this league the top league in the country!

Thanks to all of the players for all of the years helping me and the league pros-per. To sign up for next season, call Mike Bates at 602-574-3105. The draft is scheduled for Sept 12th at Bull Shooters.

Mark & Pete hold off Alvi & Mike at Jimbo’s The Friday night dart tournament at Jimbo’s on August 19th drew an-other raucous crowd of 26 players looking forward to a night of darts and fun.

Tanya & Dean put Kix & Kelli H. in the loser’s bracket in the first round, but Kix and Kelli remained undaunted and fought back for a 5th/6th place finish.

Pete and Mark took the hot-seat with a win over Tausha & Tom. On the one loss side, Alvi and Mike sent Lori & Harry John home in 4th place. Mikey took out a 156 in the 501 game to lead his team to the win. Lori was nailing the triple 17 in Cricket, but Alvi quickly shut that down and it was Alvi who came through in the end to take the point lead and win the match.

The semi-final match saw Alvi & Mike take care of the 501 game, but Tom & Tausha were not giving up the Cricket match. The rubber match started with Tom & Tausha scoring a “4 mark” to take early control, but after a couple “&$^@ DARTS!” by Alvi, she and Mike found a groove and came back to win.

Mark & Pete

Alvi & Mike won the first set of the finals, and there was not going to be any splitting on this night as Alvi insisted that they play the second set for the tournament win.

Pete led his team to a victory in the 501 as he ended the game with a T10, but the Cricket went to Alvi & Mike in a close one. Alvi & Mike held a 232-213 lead with both teams at two bulls. Alvi hit a bull on her final dart to win the game.

The final game was highlighted by the play of Pete, as he closed down the 16 and 15 ahead of Alvi and Mike on the way to a quick win.

Michael Hamman wins short notice Stingers event On Saturday August 20, 2011, Stingers held an Open 10 Ball Tourna-ment with $350 added prize money. Due to the cancellation of the DCT event, Stingers put this tournament together with only 4 days prior notice and it was a great success with 24 players showing up to play.

This wasn’t an easy fi eld with players such as Mitch Ellerman, Mike Williams, Chuck Evans, Nick De Leon, Tyson Cole and Brad Johnson who represented the 9’s and 10’s that played. The format of alternate breaks allowed the lower rated players to have a chance to cash in this event.

Tucson’s Mike Hamman captured the hot seat after defeating Jimmy Brewer. Brad Johnson took home 120.00 for 3rd place after losing his match to Jimmy.

In the fi nals, Mike and Jimmy battled it out in a hill/hill match. Mike beat Jimmy and took home $500.00 for 1st place and Jimmy took home 250.00 for his 2nd place fi nish.

Thank you or everyone who came out to support this open tournament. Congratulations to all the players who cashed in this event:

Arizona Billiard & Dart NewsSeptember 2011St. Germaine and Hagen split Metro 8’s & Under

Metro Sportz Bar drew a full field (and then some) for their July 8’s & Under 10-Ball event.

With the large number of top bartable talent in the room, some-thing had to give, and the list of players who failed to cash could have easily won the event with a better roll or two. Burt Balancad, Bernie Store, Susan Williams, Hopell Ampongan, Troy Ridder, Pete Barios and Chuck Parrill all saw their tournament end on day one out of the money.

The two players who would find their way to the match for the hot-seat had definitely proved their worth in this event. Bill Vander Weyst scored wins over Burt Balancad, Hoppell Ampongan and Art St. Germaine on this way to the hot-seat match. His opponent, Tucson’s Jeff Hagan, had not had any easier a route of his own. Hagan beat Ken Gouso, Bernie Store, Jimmy Brewer and Oscar Avila over the two day event.

The hot-seat match started with Hagan in complete control and a 4-0 lead. Then it was Vander Weyst’s turn to take control, as he raced back to tie the match at 5-5. Hagan nosed back out ahead at 7-5, but Vander Weyst won a game to get back to within one at 7-6. The fourteenth rack had a rather unique start as Vander Weyst broke the rack funny and the balls did not spread very well at all. Instead of taking the table - on the hill - Hagen took it on himself to rerack the balls so Vander Weyst could break again. Vander Weyst took advantage of the second opportunity and made a ball and then a 2-10 combo to tie the match at 7-7. Hagan had control of the final rack and ran to a tough combo on the final 10-ball. Although the ball missed it’s original target the first time, two rails later it was in the pocket and Hagan was in the hot-seat.

The semi-final between St Germaine and Vander Weyst was another hill-hill thriller. Bill held an early 3-1 lead and he kept that thin lead until Art was able to tie the match at 6-6. Bill got to the hot-seat first at 7-6, but Art won the next two racks to send Bill home in third place, with two hill-hill losses.

Since the last two hill-hill matches were so much fun for the competi-tors, it was only right that they would play another hill-hill match in the first set of the finals. The match started out close at 1-1 and 2-2, before Art took a 5-2 lead. The lead would be shortlived as Jeff won three in a row to tie the match at 5-5. Jeff would take one rack leads at 6-5 and 7-6, but could not push the lead to more than one rack and the players found themselves tied at 7-7. Jeff took

Art St. Germaine & Jeff Hagan

control of the final rack, but ran out of steam just short of the finish line. He missed both an 8-10 combo and a 9-ball in the final rack, and Art gladly ran the last couple balls to win the first set of the finals 8-7.

With the late hour, and a drive back to Tucson on Hagan’s schedule, both players agreed to split first and second instead of the chance of another hill-hill match.

1st Jeff Hagan $9091st Art St. Germaine $9093rd Bill Vander Weyst $210 (no side pots)4th Brian Reich $2345th Oscar Avila $1276th Ken Gouso $60 (no side pots)

Cheeseman wins at KittysJack Chees-man cruised through the field unde-feated to win Kitty’s August 7’s and Under 9-Ball Tour-nament.

Cheeseman took the hot-seat with a 7-3 win over Rick Morris. Meanwhile, on the left side of the

Robles & Hall qualify for World 14.1They took two complete-ly different paths, but Ray Robles and California’s Matt Hall both qualified for the World Tournament of 14.1 at the West Coast qualifier at Skip and Jans on August 6th.

Burt & Sophia at Kittys

As the summer drags on and the heat outside is enough to burn your toes, the action inside was where it was hotter. Kitty held her monthly scotch tournament and the heat was enough to put a new meaning to the term “scorched earth.” Each team was determined to get their fair share of the more than $ 1,000.00 in prize money. The hot seat match pitted Mel Kirsch and Andy Truong against Burt Balancad and Sophia Morquecho. This was a great match with the final out-come sending Mel and Andy to the one loss side. At the same time Johnny Garcia and Bob Jacobs met Tony Yuzuik and Elgin for 4th place. This hill-hill match was won by Johnny and Bob. For their efforts Tony and Elgin took home 4th place and $ 30.00. Not to be denied, the 3rd place match pitted Johnny and Bob against Mel and Andy. This exciting match went hill-hill with Johnny and Bob win-ning. Mel and Andy took 3rd place taking home $ 140.00. This set up the best match of the day, Johnny and Bob versus Burt and Sophia. Neither of the teams wanted to give an inch and each was ready to pounce at the first mistake of their opponent. In the end this hill-hill match found Burt & Sophia in 1st place and Johnny & Bob in 2nd place. For their efforts, Johnny and Bob took home $ 320.00, and Bert and Sophia took home $ 560.00. As always, Kitty provided a great venue and wonderful service. Hope to see you all there next month.

board, Bob Jacobs was navigating a see-saw match with Eddie Koonce. Jacobs led the match 4-2, but then lost four in a row to put Koonce on the hill at 6-4. From there, Jacobs won the next two matches to win the handicapped match 6-6.

Jacobs didn’t have to deal with Morris on the one loss side, as Morris had to leave early due to business at this bar. This left Jacobs with the unenviable task of trying to beat Cheeseman twice in the finals.

Cheeseman took an early 3-1 lead, but Jacobs fought back to tie the match at 3-3. From there, Cheeseman crept back out in the lead and held Jacobs off for a 7-4 win in the first set of the finals.

Cheeseman took home $200 for first place, while Jacobs settled for $110 in second place prize money. Neither Cheeseman or Jacobs were in any of the side pots.

ney was much shorter as he stayed on the right side of the board. Robles ended his trek with a 100-70 win over David Wiseman for the hot-seat. Since the top two players in this event qualified, the hot-seat was enough to earn Robles the spot.

Hall, on the other hand, had to maneuver a much tougher road on the one loss side. Hall faced local shooter Jerry Hartnett (who had just earned a nailbiting 100-99 win over Phil Ferranti) to see who would play Wiseman for the final spot. Hall would win this match 100-74, but both he and Hartnett struggled mightily with both players unable to assume any control over the match.

The final match of the night between Hall and Wiseman, saw a very different player in Hall. Hall jumped out to an early lead and controlled almost every rack. Hall didn’t do anything fancy - he just made balls. Wiseman tried to mount a comeback towards the end, but it was too late as Hall won the match 100-38.

Robles was also the promoter and director of this event and he thanked the fol-lowing people for helping with the event; Lenny Marshall (Ontherail.tv), Mike Lalumiere for helping run the board and Natalie & all the staff at Skip and Jan’s.

The hot seat match pitted Steve Feld and Del Glenn against Randy Kinney and Jim Money. The action was hot and heavy and after a great duel, Jim and Randy held the hot seat. At the same time Bill Vanderwyest and Chris Carpenter matched with Brad Johnson and Amanda Pulley for 4th place.

Bill and Chris, who went to the one loss side early, met Del and Steve for 3rd place. This was an exciting match. Ultimately, Steve and Del took 3rd and $ 140.00, for their efforts.

After Bill and Chris won the first set from Randy and Jim, the players decided to split 1st and 2nd. Each team took home $ 460.00.As always, Skip and Jan’s provided a great place to play, excellent food and great service. Hope to see all of you there next month.

Why Should Anyone Take a Formal Pool Lesson? By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

The natural course for someone learning the game of pool is to start in someone’s basement or family room. As we get a little older, we start hanging out at a pool hall or bars just about anywhere there is a pool table and most of the time with your friends. Usually pool is one of the cheapest sports and forms of entertainment possible so this allows us to play and practice for hours. Anytime we do something for hours, we all think we should improve. The main reason we do not improve is simply picking up bad habits because when we first start to play we just watch and listen to everyone that has played for years whether they are telling you correctly or not.

Randy Goettlicher is one of the original four Master Instructors honored by the Billiard Con-gress of America. Randy is the Head Master: BCA Instructor located in Dallas, Texas more

information at www.poolschool.info.

Here are his four top reasons to take a formal lesson. • Cut the learning curve from 10

years in half• To fortify the things you do cor-

rectly and to fix your errors• Actually, to have fun• Knowledge is power if coupled

with application

An instructor can fine tune good points and correct bad habits in a very short amount of time. Learning the correct skills can prevent you from practicing hours the incorrect way.
