Well, that didn’t last long. Scott Frost’s first tournament with a bounty on his head was the end of his undefeated run, thanks to Dennis Orender. As if that wasn’t enough, Paul Feltman Jr. eliminated Frost from the One Pocket Madness event a week later. Another year is behind us, and I can’t tell whether things are looking up or down for the local pool and darts scene. I see tournaments that look to be drawing more and more players, but rooms are still struggling. Lets hope 2013 is a better year for local rooms than 2012 was. The Desert Classic Tour kicks off their 2013 season this month at Skip & Jan’s. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there.

Until February... - Mike

The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour ended their 2012 season on December 1st and 2nd at Bullshooters in Phoenix, and more was at stake than just first place in the tournament. With three ladies within striking distance of the top spot on the tour points list, the ladies would be keeping an eye on other tables all weekend to see how other top ladies were doing in their matches.

Although Susan Williams held the lead on the poinsts list, Las Vegas’ Stacy Allsup and Ari-zona’s Angel Paglia were both mathematically in the running for the top spot. And to make things even more interesting, all three of these ladies re-mained undefeated into the final four players on the winners side Sunday. They would be joined in the final four by Sonia Flores, who looked to be intent on spoiling the tournament for any player unfortunate enough to get in her way.

Susan Williams sent Flores to the left side of the board 7-2 on Sunday and Angel Paglia earned a tough 7-5 win over Allsup to set up a Williams/Paglia hot seat match. With the win over Flores, Williams locked up at least third place and that would be enough to rule out a Paglia points list win.

Paglia had a slow start in the hot-seat match, as she watched Williams move out to an early 3-1 lead. Angel apparently decided that she had seen enough of Williams pocketing 9-balls and stepped her game up a notch or two. Paglia would win six of the next seven games for the 7-4 win and the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Allsup and Flores bounced back nicely from their winners side losses. All-sup defeated Sara Miller and Flores beat Lean-drea Gaff.

Allsup and Flores then faced off against each other and Flores took ear-ly control of this match. Before Allsup knew what hit her, Flores was sitting pretty with a 6-1 lead. Allsup hadn’t drove all the way from Vegas to just lower her head and take a beating though, and she clawed back to 6-5 before Flores was finally able to put away the match 7-5. With the loss to Flores, any hopes of the tour points victory for Allsup were gone and Susan Williams was able to briefly celebrate the tour points win.

Susan was not able to celebrate for long, as she would have to face Flores to determine who would play Paglia in the finals. Susan quickly took a 4-1 lead over Flores and kept the pres-sure on as she defeated Flores 7-3 to earn the rematch with Paglia in the finals. Flores finished in third place, her best tour finish to date.

The final match was an extended race to nine and Wil-liams was trying to erase the memory of the loss to Paglia for the hot-seat. Williams looked well on her way to doing just that as she won rack after rack to find her-self with a 7-3 lead. Again, Paglia would dig down and find another level of play. Paglia would not lose another game as she won six straight games for the 9-7 victory and first place. Along with the $400 in first place prize money, Paglia also won the paid entry to the WPBA Masters in February.

The second chance tournament on Sunday saw Claudia Justus go undefeated and beat Connie Soots in the finals for the tournament win. Justus pocketed $90 in prize money, while Soots settled for $60. Beth Orth finished in third and earned $30 in prize money.

Complete Payouts:1st Angel Paglia $4002nd Susan Williams $2503rd Sonia Flores $2004th Stacy Allsup $1505th Leandrea Gaff $805th Sara Miller $807th Terri Johnson McCauley $507th Amanda Pulley $50

Bruce then faced Josh where he beat Josh 2-0, giving Josh $65 for 3rd place.

Ed still was on fire as he won 2-0 against Bruce and took home $290.00 for 1st place and Bruce got $150.00 for 2nd place.

Although the tournament’s namesake has moved away from Arizona, Kolby’s still drew a fi eld of fourteen play-ers on December 29th for Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket Event.

To no one’s sur-prise, the winners side came down to Scott Frost vs Gus Briseno. Frost would win the fi rst and third games of the match for a 2-1 win and the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Jason Polk was proving that his cash earlier in December at the Bullshooters One Pocket Madness event was no fl uke. Polk had lost to Tres Kane in the fi nal eight on the winners side, but came back with wins over George Teyechea and Bernie Pettipiece on the left side of the board.

Polk kept his winning streak alive with a 2-1 win over Ricky Tyrell to leave Tyrell one spot out of the money in 4th place.

Polk would have to settle for third place though, as Briseno skunked him 2-0 in the semi-fi nal match.

After already fi ghting it out in a hill-hill match for the hot-seat, Briseno and Frost decided on a split instead of playing out the fi nal match.

Complete Payouts:1st Scott Frost $2502nd Gus Briseno $1903rd Jason Polk $80

Gus Briseno and Scott Frost

Frost/Briseno Split at KolbysTres Wins One Pocket MadnessTres Kane went undefeated through a full fi eld of sixteen players to win Bullshoot-ers One Pocket Madness event on December 15th.

Still sting-ing from seeing his tournament undefeated streak ended a week earlier, Scott Frost looked strong early in this one. That strength would fade in the winners side fi nal four as Tres sent Scott to the one loss side 2-0. The other winners side match saw Paul Feltman Jr. defeat Jason Polk to send Jason to the one loss side.

Kane would then go on to defeat Feltman Jr. for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Frost ended Jason Polk’s tourney in 4th place, but Frost would soon join Polk on the rail after losing to Feltman Jr.

The extended fi nal match between Tres and Paul went to Tres 3-1 for the tour-nament win.

Final Payouts:1st Tres Kane $2602nd Paul Feltman Jr. $1703rd Scott Frost $1004th Jason Polk $50

The 2012 APA sponsored Toys for Tots Tournament is in the books and what a great time we all had.

28 players showed up at Bullshooters on the 16th of December mak-ing the charity event a huge success. We would like to thank all the participants this year for their generosity and sportsmanship. We would especially like to thank Jahnythan Craig, 8, and Michael Dale, 14, for their help with setting up and tearing down, and their participation in the tournament. These two are our fastest rising stars in our Junior program. Jahnythan played as an SL 3 and Michael competed as an SL 5 and both played extremely well.

We would also like to thank Mike, Julie, Brooke, and the rest of the staff at Bullshooters for their hospitality and allowing us to hold this event at their establishment each year.

Part of the entry was a new, unwrapped toy, and there were plenty to be had. The donations com-pletely covered one of the pool tables. The toys were then delivered to the Marine Corp. Station in bags the following day.

The tournament was a race to handicap 8 ball Single modified format played on the 9’ tables. Pizza and wings were supplied by the APA League and Bullshooters offered up some of their best specials of the year. “This year was our biggest turn out so far”, said Gina Nowlin, who runs the APA League with her husband, Doug, in the Phoenix area. “We can’t wait until next year because it gets better each time we hold the

event.”

Even though this event is open to any and all Phoenix players, the four top placing players this year were all APA members. Taking first place was John Galetti, receiving $140 and the big trophy. 2nd Place went to Joe Shipley who received $90 and the 2nd place trophy. Micah Fakiner took home the 3rd place trophy and $50. Rounding out the top 4 was Sean Bergen. All the players had a great time competing and giving to a great cause.

Gina and Doug would like to thank all the participants for their support.

On paper, the Desert Classic Tour’s season finale final match looked pretty lopsided. Dennis Orender (who had not won an event since 2009) was facing Bobby Emmons (who had already won two tours tops this year). Dennis had to beat Bobby twice and was already trailing the first set of the finals 4-0. But there is a reason that matches aren’t played on paper, and Dennis would be more than happy to point that reason out to anyone watching the match.

The field of 35 players in the event would be another strong one, with such notables as Scott Frost (putting his tournament winning streak on the line), Bobby Emmons, Gus Briseno, Mitch Ellerman, Chris Paradowski, Rudy Alameda, Mike Sandoval, Brett Huth, Chuck Evans, Carlos Avalos (sporting a new 9 rating), Nick De Leon and Paul Grande.

Frost would see his winning streak in danger early, as he lost to Paul Grande 8-7 on Friday. Other Friday upsets saw De Leon drop a match to Ken Gouso and Chuck Evans losing to Robin Clark.

The one loss side would turn out to be a danger-ous place to be on Saturday with Briseno drop-ping matches to Ellerman and Orender to finish out of the money. Chuck Evans would be elimi-nated on Saturday by Doc Rice.

Sunday matches brought back eight players. Winners side matches saw Jim Hendrickson defeat Paul Grande and Bobby Emmons send Mitch Ellerman to the one loss side. Bobby then went on to defeat Hendrickson to take the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Frost still had hopes of

winning this event. He had put together a five match winning streak on the left side of the board, that included wins over Sammy Martinez, Jude Espinoza, Susan Williams, Eric Young and Carlos Avalos. Frost kept that streak alive on Sunday with a win over Jose Gonzalez.

Meanwhile, Orender was recovering from a loss to Carlos Avalos with wins over George Teyechea and Will Sexton. Orender then sent Ken Gouso home in 7th place.

Next up for Frost and Orender were Mitch Ellerman and Paul Grande, fresh from their winners side losses. Scott and Dennis would be up to their individual tasks with Frost eliminating Ellerman and Orender beating Paul Grande.

Frost and Orender then faced off for the right to play Jim Hendrickson in the semi-finals. This match looked to be over as Scott led the match 8-4, needing one game before Dennis could win four. Dennis won the next game and then took control of the match to win the next three games for the 8-8 win, ending Frost’s undefeated tournament run at fifteen tournaments.

Dennis would then eliminate Jim Hendrickson 8-5 to set up the match with Bobby in the finals.

These two players had played in the finals of the 2010 season finale with Bobby double dipping Orender to win the event. Dennis would have his hands full trying to return the favor this year. Bobby raced out to a 4-0 lead and looked like he might have taken his foot off the gas as Orender won three games to get back within one at 4-3. Orender would tie the match at 5-5 and take his first lead at 6-5. The score was tied again at 6-6 before

Orender won the next two games for an 8-6 win in the first set.

The second set stayed close early on with the score tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4. From there, Orender won three games for a 7-4 lead. Bobby would get back within one rack at 7-6 before Orender put the match away 8-6.

The Desert Classic Tour will kick off their 2013 season at Skip & Jan’s on January 5th and 6th with a bartable 9-Ball event.

What Would A Sucker Do?

By Jacqueline KarolHouse Pro at DownLo Billiards in Chico, California

If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers….YOU are the sucker!

You have stripes here. You each only have one ball left and the 8-ball. Your opponent’s ball, the solid, is on the opposite rail. What do you do?

1) “Make a super thin cut on your stripe and pocket it in the corner!”

2) “Bank your stripe in the corner!”

3) “Double bank the stripe in the opposite cor-ner.”

Suckers…

Why are these not good ideas?1. Super thin cuts are low percentage and if you

miss, your opponent will either have a shot or play a safe on you.

2. Bank shots are also low percentage.3. Double banking is about twice as low per-

centage and an even worse choice.

Answer: The best conclusion can be arrived at only after you have weighed all of the options and costs and benefits of each option. First look to find your safe spots on the table and see if it is easy to get there. In this case, it is very easy to put your cue ball behind the eight ball blocking your op-

ponents shot to their solid. This easy shot takes a lot of pressure off you and puts it on them. Now they have to worry about making a legal hit. Even if they hit it, you will most likely have another shot at the table to either run out and win or play another safety. Either way you are maintaining the control at the table. Now your odds of winning are much higher.

**** Upcoming Important Dates *****

State Team Tryouts:For those of you new to the league, the Scotts-dale Darts association is a member of the Ari-zona Federation of Darts Associations (www.ari-zonadarts.org). This is an association comprised of the many steel tip darts associations across Arizona. Once a year each member association selects 5 men and 3 women to represent their league in a weekend long round robin tourna-ment against all the other leagues in the AFDA for bragging rights of the best league in the state! The SDA selects our team through 4 weekly double elimination tournaments. Throwers ac-cumulate points each week based on where they fi nish, and at the end of the 4 weeks, the top 5 men and top 3 women (6 + 2 alternates) are invited to represent the SDA at the AFDA shoot. However, since many of our members also throw in other leagues, it is often the case that some of the top fi nishers will decline the SDA nomina-tion and the next fi nisher will be offered the spot, as is needed until we have all spots for the team fi lled. This truly makes it an open opportunity for anyone to make the team.

The State Team tryouts are held the last 4 Tues-days in January (1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29) signup is at 7:00 with the tournament starting at 7:30.

Fees are $5 per week, or $15 paid in full on the fi rst week for all 4 weeks. Men’s tryouts will be held at the Ice House and Women’s tryouts will be at Jesters.

I would encourage everyone to come out and partici-pate in the tournament. Not only is it a great chance to represent your league in the state shoot, but it is a good opportunity to get some competitive practice in between seasons as well as meet and play against some members you normally wouldn’t see during the regular season. I can also say that many teams have been formed and players added to existing teams during these 4 weeks. So if you’re looking to change teams, or are losing someone from your team, come out and see who else is looking for a team or player!

The AFDA Tournament for 2013 will be held the week-end of March 3rd at BullShooters here in Phoenix.

Last Day to Register Teams for Spring Season:Tuesday 1/29 is the last day to register teams for the 2013 spring season. Team signup sheets can be down-loaded from the SDA website and should be brought to a board member at one of the Tuesday State Team tryouts listed above. Individual membership fees remain at $25 per player and have to be paid (i.e...in the hands of a board member) by the 3rd week of play. Points scored during league play by any unpaid member after the 3rd week are forfeited. All new and returning members are required to provide both an email address

and contact phone number. The team ap-plication will not be considered complete without this information. I am in the pro-cess of updating the team regis-tration sheets to refl ect these new requirements. Also, members on the original team roster do not need to fi ll out individual applica-tions. Individual application sheets only need to be used for players added after the season starts.

Fall Awards Banquet and Captains Meeting:The Fall Awards Banquet and Spring Season Captains Meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb 5th, 6:30pm at the Ice House. Daryl will be fi ring up the barbecue and providing some good eats for all. You are encouraged to bring a side dish or desert to share. A blind draw tournament will wrap up the night.

First Week of Play:The spring season will kick off on Feb 12th!

Stinger’s Sports Bar came together with Arizona Showgirls, Suntrack Games, Troy Vending and PDI Dart Leagues for the 1st Annual Holiday for the Homeless Dart Tournament.

This event featured $2,500 in guaranteed added money (thanks mostly to the generous sponsor-ship of Arizona Showgirls) and $1,000 guaran-teed to the first place team.

Players wishing to compete in this event were required to donate a new or slightly used piece of clothing with all clothing being donated to the Phoenix Homeless Shelter.

Eighty Six players turned out for this event and a good time looked to be had by all.

The ladies of Arizona Showgirls were in at-tendance selling shirts all night and by the end of the event, well over $1000 was raised for the Homeless Shelter.

The tournament saw the team of Andy Bates & Jeremy Lee take the hot-seat with a win over Thad Uraine & Kevin Vandenberg.

On the left side of the board, Kenny Wright & Tom McCartney eliminated Don Bustraan & Matt Edgars in 5th place.Don & Matt were joined by Eric Baron & Geana Peterson in 5th place after a loss to Dario Meza & Shannon Kehoe.

Wright & McCartney then eliminated Dario & Shannon in 4th place.

The semi-final match went to a rubber game be-fore Thad & Kevin were able to eliminate Kenny & Tom in third place.

The final match was basically a repeat of the hot-seat match with Andy Bates and Jeremy Lee scoring a 2-0 win over Thad Uraine & Kevin Vandenberg.

Both first and second place teams donated part of their prize money to the Phoenix Homeless Shelter when the tournament was complete.

A big part of the success of this event was the coopera-tion between Suntrack Games, Troy Vending and the PDI Dart Leagues. Plans are being discussed for more joint events like this in the future.

The New Year

So it is that time of year where we all talk about what changes we want to make in our lives and how this next year will be better than the last. Well, at least we hope.

The thing to change, whether it be life or your dart game, is making that first step. Ev-erything starts by one small action that leads to another and so on. Make your first step a small one versus a monumental change, as this will lead you to a much greater chance for successful change. Want to be a better player? Add 15 mins in a day versus thinking you need to throw for hours. It is not the amount of time you put in that matters, it is the quality of time you put in.

This year will see very big changes on both the Steel-tip and Soft-tip scene. Starting with the Steel, we will see a

series of 5 big money events that are long format (best of 11 legs or set play) to qualify you for the PDC World Championships. I will make my bid to return to the Ally Pally this year as that is the greatest stage in darts and I wish everyone could experience it as it total-ly changes how you view darts. This “tour” will start at the start of April in Las Vegas with the “New World Series of Darts” being the host, so make sure you plan to be there.

On the Soft-tip scene, you have two new companies coming in and really making a push to change darts. You have Dartslive and Phoenix machines coming in and bringing new systems to how we play. I truly think the days of the extended dragged out style of the NDA taking in a ton of money and only returning a small portion of it are coming to a end. Why does an event really need 9 days when could be done in 4? Dartslive will once again be running a huge event in Las Vegas this summer and definitely an event every player needs to attend… offers

by far the largest prizes at the cheapest cost for a event.(entry is $300 includ-ing 3 nights hotel and no coin drop for a shot to make upwards of $20,000 over the events). Dartslive WORLD pro tour is taking on a whole new look this year as well, with truly being a World tour. The final plans are not out yet for all the countries we will be in, but I do know it includes Hong Kong, Las Vegas USA, La Rochelle France, Shanghai China, Malaysia, Thailand with possible events in Singapore and the United Kingdom (The Shanghai event will also include the IDF World Cup so over a 4 day period you can literally make $36,000 US) The tour has also changed so that unless you qualify through the Dragon event here in the USA, you will need to attend at least 3 events to get into the qualifiers to chase your shot at $130,000 US first prize at the TOUR Grand Final in December. Also, with the new part-nership of the PDC and Dartslive, one player will also get to play the PDC World Championships and the Grand Slam of Darts…two amazing events.

So plan your year out now and hope to see you on the oche…Times are changing, come out and be apart of it.

Kitty’s drew a massive field of twenty nine teams for the December 15 & Under Scotch Doubles tournament on December 29th, and it was Joe Granillo & Larry Worden who would conquer the field for the undefeated win.

Granillo & Worden made their way through the winners side and defeated An-drew Roche and JR Salgado 7-5 to take the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Justin Wolf & Adam Kaufman had just eliminated Harold Lyons and Laura Boothroyd in 5th place. Also finishing in 5th were Steve De-luna & Emmitt Smith, who lost to Ray Shaban & Joey Barrera.

Justin & Adam had lost their first match of the tournament, but came back to win six straight on the one loss side before finally giving in to Ray & Joey to finish in 4th place.

Ray & Joey went on to face Andrew & JR, who they had already lost to on the winners side. This was a tight match that ended up going hill-hill before Andrew & JR pocketed the final 9-ball to leave Ray & Joey in 3rd place.

Andrew & JR were hoping to avenge the earlier loss to Joe & Larry in the finals, but it was not to be as Joe & Larry scored a 6-4 win to take down first place.

Not getting into any sidepots would end up costing Joe & Larry as they ended up with less prize money than the second place team.

Complete Payouts1st Joe Granillo & Larry Worden $5002nd Andrew Roche & JR Salgado $6103rd Ray Shaban & Joey Barrera $3204th Justin Wolf & Adam Kaufman $1305th Steve Deluna & Emmitt Smith $205th Harold Lyons & Laura Boothroyd $507th George Bell & Steve Maguire $40

Jacobs Undefeated at KittysBob Jacobs scored back-to-back hard fought wins to earn first place at Kitty’s De-cember 7’s & Under 9-Ball Tournament on December 8th.

Jacobs was just one of the top 7’s in the field of twenty one players.

Other favorites on this weekend included Johnny Garcia, Tenador Lee, Brian Poore, Amado Martinez and Steve Maguire.

Jacobs and Martinez would face off for the hot-seat, which Jacobs would win 6-5.

On the one loss side, Steve Maguire was cutting a path through the one loss side with a rematch against Jacobs in his sights. After a loss to Jacobs in the final eight on the winners side, Maguire won five straight matches including tough wins over Garcia, Tenador and Martinez.

The finals saw Jacobs win the first three games and never trail in the match as he held off a come-back attempt by Maguire and won the match 6-4.

Final Payouts (Including Sidepots)1st Bob Jacobs $2202nd Steve Maguire $200 3rd Amado Martinez $1804th Tenador Lee $70

Bob Jacobs, Kitty Carroll and Steve MaguireTony Yuzuik Sr & Tony Yuzuik Jr.

Yuzuik Sr & Jr Win at KittysTony Yuzuik Sr. and Tony Yuzuik Jr. teamed up for an undefeated run through the field of 24 other teams to win Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on December 22nd.

Tony & Tony took the hot-seat with a very close 6-5 deci-sion over Joe Wiley & Jeff Vikete.

On the one loss side, Bernie Pappa & Sophia Morquecho defeated Don Still-ings & Chris Cable 6-3. Bernie & Sophia held an early 3-1 lead, but let Don & Chris tie things at 3-3 before they went ahead and won the match.

Bernie & Sophia would not be able to repeat that performance against Joe & Jeff though, as Joe & Jeff won the next match 6-3 to setup a rematch against Tony & Tony in the finals.

The first set of the finals saw Tony & Tony struggling with their games, while Joe & Jeff took complete advantage and cruised to a 3-0 lead. That was when Tony & Tony started putting things together. They tied the match at 4-4 and saw the pressure starting to get to Joe & Jeff. Two racks later, it was Tony & Tony celebrating a 6-4 win for the tournament victory.

A field of twenty three of the best 55 and older players in Arizona made their way to Kittys on December 1st for the 5th Annual Senior Barbox Championship. This marquee event draws the top barbox players in the valley and this year was no exception with such notables as former champions Chuck Evans and Doc Rice, as well as Burt Balancad, Pat Dicker, Andy Peterson and Don Westbrooks.

Early favorite Chuck Evans was looking strong in this event, but ran into a roadblock when he got to the final four on the winners side. A loss to Burt Balancad on the winners side was followed by a loss to Pat Dicker on the one loss side and Evans was eliminated just out of the money.

After the win over Evans, Balancad moved on to face Bob Jacobs for the hot-seat. As this tourna-ment was a “handicap - 2” event, Burt would race to six while Bob raced to four. The handicap would not come into play in this match, with Bob cruising to a 4-1 win.

The one loss side saw two players who were put-ting together nice runs.

After a loss to John Neal, Pat Dicker had won three straight, including wins over Andy Peterson and Chuck Evans.

Pat’s opponent, Randy Kinny, had lost to Chuck Evans on the winners side, but put together a three match winning streak of his own.

The match between Pat and Randy would go to Randy 5-3, leaving Pat in 4th place.

The semi-final match would see Burt Balancad racing to six and Randy Kinny racing to five, and

again the handicap would not come into play as Randy won this match 5-4.

The true double elimination finals between Jacobs and Kinny would be a 5-4 race with Kinny going to five.

Jacobs came out strong and led the 1st set 2-1 before Randy took advantage of back to back table runs to gain the lead at 3-2. Randy went on to win the next two games for a 5-2 win, forcing a second set to determine a winner.

Again, Jacobs came out strong in the second set of the finals and held a 2-0 lead. And again, Kinny came back

and took control of the match with five straight wins for the 5-2 tournament win.

The Arizona Foosball League championships (a.k.a. “Foos Bowl”) took place on Decem-ber 15, 2012 at Stinger’s Sports Bar in Peoria. This popular event is the culmination of a four month season featuring scores of players based on teams around the valley, and hosts both the league championship title match (top two teams) along with fi nals matches for a variety of indi-vidual titles and precious bragging rights. There were over forty local foosers (fooser = one who plays foosball) on hand for the latest rendition of this all day extravaganza.

Foosball (otherwise known as “table soccer”) is a table sport where opponents face off head-to-head in an adrenaline-fi lled rush to score goals as quickly as possible, achieve glory on the battle-fi eld, and if possible, send one’s opponent away with head hanging in defeat, ears ringing, and talking to himself.

While it is generally agreed by sports historians that foosball originated between 1 and 2 mil-lion years ago in the south of France, it didn’t come to prominence until the 1970s with the arrival of pinball, Pac Man and pop idol/fooser Leo Sayer. At that time the game grew to be nearly as popular as billiards, and that decade saw full sized foosball halls, foosball “hustlers”, and multi-million dollar pro tournaments. Since that time the game has endured many ups and downs, and though the large halls with a dozen or more tables have become scarce to fi nd, there has remained throughout an underground society of players (new and old) who meet regularly in local bars to compete in $5 or $10 tournaments and have a good time with a lot of old friends. An offi cial Arizona Foosball League kicked off in 2005, and has become increasingly popular ever since.

Currently, Arizona Foosball is offering tournaments and leagues in various locations around the valley including West & Central Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert. Players of all levels are welcome, and several events (including the valley-wide league) are also handicapped in order to even out the playing fi eld.

So if you are an old-school player looking to get back into the game, or you are simply curious about all the loud sounds, odd charac-ters, and commotion com-ing from the back of your favorite local bar these days, check out all the cool things going down in the new foosball world with a quick visit to www.arizonafoos-ball.com or call Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818 for info.
