Things just keep getting busier and busier in the valley. With some rooms holding events every weekend, and others getting back involved in big tournaments, it seems like there are major events happening everywhere. August and September look to be no exception with the BCAPL SW Regional Championships right around the corner. Don’t miss the warm up event at Stingers on the 11th and 12th. August will also feature the Arizona State One Pocket Championships at Kolby’s on the 18th and 19th. Dart players have $1000 shoots at both Stingers and Bullshooters, as well as the Copperstate Team Challenge in September. We have added a new feature to the paper this month, as we hope to run player profiles for both pool and dart players from now on. - Mike

Metro Sportz Bar welcomed a full field of 32 players to their Six and Under 9-Ball event on July 14th, where Aaron Schiefelbein stumbled in the final four of the winners side, but came back with a vengeance to win the event.

Schiefelbein lost to Steve Mullis in the final four and made this way to the one loss side.

Mullis quickly joined Schiefelbein on the left side of the board, after a 6-3 loss to Tim Casey for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Schiefelbein made quick work of Mike Zing 6-2. Meanwhile, Guy Mar-tinez eliminated Steve Morrow by the same 6-2 score. Zing and Morris finished tied for 5th place.

Schiefelbein then defeated Martinez in a close 6-4 match to ended Martinez’s day in 4th place.

Next up for Schiefelbein was rematch with Mul-lis in the semi-finals. This match went to hill-hill before Schiefelbein pocketed the final 9-ball and earned his place in the finals against Casey.

Although Mullis finished in third place, he was the last remaining player in all of the side pots and actually won more prize money than either of the players facing off in the finals.

The double elimination finals started out with Schiefelbein racing to a 3-0 lead. He lengthened that lead to 5-1 and the first set looked to be all but over.

That was when Casey took control and won three straight games to get back within one rack at 5-4. That would actually be the last game that Casey

won in the tournament as Schiefelbein won the next rack to take the first set 6-4 forcing a second race to six to determine a winner.

The comeback by Casey might have gotten Schiefel-bein’s attention and he refused to all Casey any chance get anything started in the second set. When Schiefel-bein pocketed his fifth 9-ball of the set for a 5-0 lead, Casey had had enough and gave up.

Schiefelbein’s win was sort of anti-climactic though, as he would end up with only $500 in prize money with no side pots. Casey earned $560 for second and third place

finisher Steve Mullis earned the biggest share of prize money with $570 for third place.

Complete Payouts:

1st Aaron Schiefelbein $5002nd Tim Casey $5603rd Steve Mullis $5704th Guy Martinez $1505th Mike Zing $1125th Steve Morrow $112

Wethington Wins at MetroJustin Wethington navigated his way through a full field of 32 players to win the Metro Sportz Bar’s weekly 7s & Under 8-Ball event on July 20th.

Wethington took the win-ners side with a 2-0 win over Larry Patrick.

Patrick moved over to the left side of the board and found Donnie Raymond on a roll. Raymond had lost his second match of the tournament to Wethington, but had been paving a path through the one loss side ever since then.

Raymond had just eliminated Mike Howerton 2-0 and he did the same to Pat-rick 2-0 in the next match.

This left Wethington and Raymond facing off in a true double elimination final match.

Raymond kept up his strong play and won the first set 2-0 to force a second set, but Wethington turned the tables and won the second set 2-0 for the tournament win.

Final Payouts:1st Justin Wethington $2002nd Donnie Raymond $803rd Larry Patrick $404th Mike Howerton $205th Ryan McKay $106th Ben Tamen $10

Crash & Jeff Top Team at BullshootersCrash Red-din and Jeff Heimburger may have lost their first match at Bullshoot-ers’ Weekly Scotch Doubles event on July 22nd, but they rose to the challenge and took the long way to the tournament victory.

Reddin & Heimburger started their campaign with a loss to Steve Morrow & Abel Saenz. Morrow & Saenz would go on from there to travel the winners side and win the hot-seat with a 4-5 win over BBQ & Joe Chyzy. (Steve & Abel raced to 4, while BBQ & Joe went to 6)

On the one loss side, Crash & Jeff were laying waste to team after team. A 6-2 win over Mel Kirsch & JP Rush earned them a match against BBQ & Joe to see which team would go to the finals.

The semi-final match was a close one the whole way, with the score tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before Crash & Jeff won the match 6-4.

The double elimination final match saw Crash & Jeff cruise to a 6-1 win in the first set of the finals, but the second set was much closer. Crash & Jeff raced to a 3-1 lead, but watch as Steve & Abel tied the match at 3-3. This left Steve & Abel needing one game for the win, but they would not get that game as Crash & Jeff won the next three games for the win.

Final Payouts:1st Crash Reddin & Jeff Heimburger $6602nd Steve Morrow & Abel Saenz $140 (no side pots)3rd BBQ & Joe Chyzy $300 (in all side pots)4th Mel Kirsch & JP Rush $40

JR Burkhart came back from a loss in the hot-seat match to double dip Michael Hamman in the finals and won the Desert Classic Tour’s B/C stop at Bullshooters on July 28th and 29th.

Burkhart and Hamman were just two of the early favorites in the 40 player field with other notables including Jerry Stuckart, Brian Reich, Carlos Avalos, Burt Balancad, Ken Gouso, Jason Polk and Ed Scott.

Burkhart’s path to the match for the hot-seat was a tough one with wins over Polk, Pat Dicker and C rated Bull Truitt on Saturday.

Hamman’s path was also a tough one with wins over John Hoover, Susan Williams and Leandrea Gaff on Saturday.

The tournament got underway on Sunday with eight players left. Burkhart sent Jim Hendrickson to the left side 7-3, and Hamman defeated Tim Rachu by the same 7-3 score.

On the one loss side, Bill Truitt ended Rachu’s tournament by the score of 6-3, and Hendrickson bounced back from his earlier loss to eliminate Brian Reich 7-6.

The match for the hot-seat was quick and one-sided as Hamman seemed to be in complete control. His 2-0 lead quickly ballooned to a 5-1 lead and a 7-2 victory that didn’t even appear to be that close.

Burkhart regrouped on the one loss side and got ready to face Truitt, who had just eliminated Hendrickson 6-4. Truitt had eliminated Todd Rowitz, Jason Sweet, Rachu and Hendrickson already; and it looked like Burkhart would be

adding his name to that list as Truitt raced to a quick 3-1 lead. Things quickly turned around for Burkhart though, as he turned up the pressure with some great safety play and tied the score at 3-3. The score would be tied again at 4-4, before Burkhart won the next three games for a 7-4 win.

Even with the win over Truitt, Burkhart knew he would have to bring his top game to the match against Hamman if he hoped to have a chance to beat him twice in the double elimination finals.

Burkhart looked like a different player than the one who had lost to Hamman earlier in the day as he took advan-tage of a handful of Hamman misplays and turned a 2-2 scoreline in the first set to a 7-3 win and a second set to determine the tournament winner.

The second set started out as close as the first one, with the players tied at 2-2 and 3-3. Once again, it was Burkhart who took control and started pulling away from Hamman. Burkhart got to the hill first at 6-3, and then held off Hamman for the 7-4 win and first place.

Not buying into the sidepots hurt Burkhart as he only earned $505 in first place prize money. Ham-man was able to take $560 in second place prize money back to Tucson with him.

Complete Payouts:1st JR Burkhart $5052nd Mike Hamman $5603rd Bill Truitt $175 (no side pots)4th Jim Hendrickson $2405th Tim Rachu $605th Brian Reich $607th Jason Sweet $407th Sammy Martinez $60 (with side pots)

Burt and Ben Split at KnobbysThe 21 player field at Knobby’s Open 8-Ball event was def-initely a strong one. Picking a favorite in the event was almost impossible with play-ers like Tyson Cole, Jose Gonzalez, Frank Alvarez, Oscar Avila and Ed Scott finish-ing out of the money.

Even with the tough field, it was a familiarface playing for the hot-seat as Burt Balancad came back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Ben Sutherland 2-1.

With the size of the field, matches on the one loss side were races to one and players were forced to bring their “A games” or go home. Pete Barrios and Todd Dilley eliminated Bill Chearney and Troy Ridder respectively, sending Chear-ney and Ridder home in 5th place.

Dilley then defeated Barrios in fourth place and got ready to take on Sutherland for a place in the finals.

Sutherland regrouped after the loss to Balancad and defeated Dilley for another shot at Balancad in the finals.

The finals were a true double elimination match with Ben needing to beat Burt in a race to two and then again in a race to one. Ben looked on his way to ac-complish just that when he won the first game of the finals for a 1-0 lead. The players put their heads together and decided on a 1st/2nd place split from there.

1st Burt Balancad $2151st Ben Sutherland $2153rd Todd Dilley $804th Pete Barrios $405th Bill Chearney $105th Troy Ridder $10

Rowe Wins Stinger’s WeeklyJonathan Rowe held off Oscar Avila and turned it on when it mattered late in the Stinger’s Weekly 8’s & Un-der 9-Ball event on July 17th.

Rowe took the hot-seat with a 6-3 win over Chuck Parrill and made himself comfortable waiting for an opponent in the finals.

On the one loss side, Parrill had a rematch waiting with Oscar Avila. Oscar had lost to Chuck earlier in the tournament and looked to be on his way to doing the same thing again in the rematch as Parrill held a a comfortable 4-1 lead in the race to five.

That was when things turned sour for Parrill as he watched Avila win three games to tie the match at 4-4 with Avila breaking. Things went from bad to worse for Parrill as Avila snapped the 9-ball on his break and won the match 5-4.

Oscar would have to beat Jonathan in a race to six and then again in a race to five in order to win this event.

Jonathan took an early 1-0 lead in the first set of the finals, but Avila won the next game for a 2-1 lead and he never trailed in the match after that. Avila took his first two game lead at 5-3 and won the match 6-4 to force the second set of the finals.

Jonathan looked to be a different player in the second set of the finals and he won five straight games to win the match and tournament.

1st Jonathan Rowe $1152nd Oscar Avila $503rd Chuck Parrill $20

Mark Avalos takes 3rd place at Stingers Weekly Tournament

Mark Avalos may only be a kid but he is shaping up to be an amazing pool player, and he has put in the time to show for it.

On July 3rd he and his Dad, Carlos Avalos, came out to Stingers to play in the 8 and under 9 ball weekly tourna-ment. Mark played as a 4.

After he received a bye in the first round, he faced Brett Callaway (a 6 rated player). He beat Brett and received his 1st match win, but it didn’t stop there.

After beating Brett he went on to face and defeat Todd Dilley (7 rated). Next up, Chuck Parrill (8 rated), Chuck put an end to Marks winning streak and sent Mark over to the B side where he faced Todd for a second time.

This time Todd was not going to let Mark beat him. Mark did an amazing job and we thought he deserved special recognition for his dedication and hard work, playing in tough fields and keeping his cool.

Great Job Mark!!!

Mark Avalos

The field just keep getting bigger and better at Stingers Monthly events. The July 9’s and Under 10-Ball event drew a star studded field of 45 players to take their shot at the crown.

Saturday player saw the field narrowed down to just eight players. Early favorites not making the cut on Saturday included Tyson Cole, Mike Hamman, Tenado Lee, Brad Johnson, Jose Gon-zales and Mike Sandoval.

Sunday dawned with four players on the right side and four on the wrong side of the board.

Jonathan Rowe quickly sent Donald Mangahas to the left side with an 8-3 win, while Burt Bal-ancad was sending Doug Wright to join Manga-has after an 8-5 match.

The one loss side featured contrasting matches as Nick “Nikon” De Leon ran over Mike Ken-nedy 9-2, but Brett Huth was taken to hill-hill by Richie Danials before Huth pulled out the 9-8 win.

Nick kept up his hot play and crushed Mangahas 9-3, while Brett was again taken to a tight finish before eliminating Wright 9-7.

The match between Nick and Brett for third and fourth place was a close one. De Leon led the match 8-7 and looked to be home free as he lined up a 9-ball on the hill. He missed the 9 though and Brett had new life at hill-hill. Brett started off the final rack with a safety, but Nick jumped to pocket the one ball and was left with an el-ementary 2-10 combo for the 9-8 win.

The semi-final match between De Leon and Bal-ancad was close the whole way, with the players

tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5. De Leon was finally able to grab the match’s first two rack lead at 7-5 and went on to take the match from there 9-5.

The finals would see Jonathan Rowe racing to eight and Nick De Leon racing to nine, but that handicap would not come into play on this day.

Rowe grabbed the matches first real lead at 5-2, but then saw De Leon win three straight games for a 5-5 scoreline. The match would be tied again at 6-6 and again at 7-7, but that scoreline had Rowe on the hill and he capitalized by winning the next game for the 8-7 vic-tory and first place in the event.

Final Payouts:1st Jonathan Rowe $7902nd Nick De Leon $980 (all side pots)3rd Burt Balancad $3204th Brett Huth $1905th Doug Wright $905th Donald Mangahas $907th Mike Kennedy $407th Richie Daniels $409th Mike Sandoval $209th Eric Lacey $209th Brian Reich $209th Carlos Avalos $20

Phx Juniors Return From Junior NationalsKyra Avalos returned to Phoenix with the 3rd place trophy in the Na-tional event. The 10 year old played well under the pressure of her first Na-tional event. Others that performed well were her brother Mark, Michael Dale, Orlando Chavez, and Selena West. Selena also received the very special ‘All American Academic Award’.

All 5 Juniors competed at the BEF’s (Billiards Edu-cation Foundation) 24th annual Junior National 9 Ball Championships held on July 11th -15th in Greenfield Wiscon-sin. There was over 150 young billiard athletes, ages 18 and under, who attempted to qualify to participate in the most prestigious junior tournament in North America. Romine’s High Pockets is one of the premier billiard rooms in the country, featuring forty-two (42) pool tables, eighteen (18) of which are nine-foot Brunswick tables that were draped with pristine Simonis Cloth to make a grand arena for the event.

Junior players competed for prizes and an invitation to represent the United States at the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) World Junior 9-Ball Cham-pionships. The Phoenix Juniors earned the money to go holding such events as a car wash, raffles, and other money making projects.

Good job to all the Juniors and a very big thanks to Bullshooters for helping to sponsor all the kids that play in our Junior Division.

If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers….YOU are the sucker!

You have stripes here. You are snookered and have only one ball remaining. Your smiling opponent has 5 balls left that are all makeable with no ob-structions. What do you do?

“Kick at the stripe!”

“Send the cue ball 5 rails!”

“Jump the cue ball!”

“Massé!”

Suckers.

In this case, it is unlikely that you will even hit your object ball, let alone make it and leave yourself in a position to make the 8. Whether you make a legal shot or not, you are left in the unenviable position of taking your seat and watching

your opponent run out.

If you prefer to take a more aggres-sive and proactive approach, consider taking an intentional foul by hitting the 8-ball in order to block the corner pocket. Instead of returning to the table to run out, your opponent now has a much more difficult layout and some problem balls to contend with.

Rather than watching your opponent run out, you will most likely have at least one more turn at the table.

A loss in the fi rst round of any tournament can be dis-heartening and will cause some players to be less than enthusiastic for their next matches. That wasn’t the case for Bernie Pettipiece though at Preacher Ronn’s July One Pocket event at Kolbys Corner Pocket on July 28th.

Pettipiece had the misfortune of drawing Preach-er Ronn Rutan in the fi rst round of the event and dropped to the loser’s side after the loss to Rutan.

Rutan would not be able to celebrate the win over Bernie though, as he went on to drop his next two matches and was eliminated before the money.

Two players that were celebrating their play, were David Weiss (a 7A rated player) and “Big Daddy” Tres Kane (10 rated). David and Tres faced off for the hot-seat, with Tres giving up 9-6 and 9-7 to David. That weight would be too much for even Tres to fade, as he dropped the match 2-0 and headed for the one loss side.

Waiting for Tres on the one loss side was Bernie. Bernie had been mowing through the fi eld on the left side of the board with wins over Joe Watson, Brett Huth, Eric Young and PJ.

Bernie would win the fi rst game against Tres, but Tres quickly evened things at 1-1 to force one game to determine the winner. Tres might have a hard time getting that fi nal game out of his head as he was within one ball with Bernie needing three balls before Bernie was able to capitalize on a tough roll for Tres and run the last three balls for the 2-1 win and place in the fi nals against Weiss.

Bernie was giving up 9-5 in the extended race to

three fi nals, but that would prove to be doable, at least in the fi rst game, as Bernie cruised to a 9-3 win in rack one.

Rack two was even more dominating for Bernie as he made a ball on the break and kept table control en-route to a quick 9-1 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

David had a little help from the pool gods in rack three as Bernie had kept him buried behind a cluster of balls for most of the rack. Bernie is a master at patiently waiting for his opening, and he eventually got that opening and looked to be on his way to the tournament

win. The pool gods had other ideas though and back to back scratches by Bernie led to a 5-5 win for Weiss and a 2-1 scoreline.

David looked to be on his way to tieing the match at 2-2 when he took an early 3-0 lead in the fourth rack, but Bernie tightened the screws and didn’t give up another ball. Bernie won the fi nal rack 9-3 to take fi rst place.

Final Payouts:1st Bernie Pettipiece $2302nd David Weiss $130

Junior Salgado (incorrectly identified as Camacho last month) earned a hard fought victory at Kitty’s July 7 & Under 9-Ball event.

Salgado was easily one of the early favorites in the twenty three player event, along with such notables as Jimmy Brewer, George Bell, BBQ and Justin Smith from the east side.

As the field was whittled down, it was Salgado and Tony Yuzuik facing off for the hot-seat. That match went to Salgado by a very close 7-5 score.

Meanwhile, on the one loss side, two of Yuzuik’s early victims were fighting to stay alive in the tournament. Justin Smith and George Bell went to hill-hill before Smith pock-eted the final 9-ball, forcing Bell to settle for 4th place.

This left Smith facing Yuzuik for the right to take on Salgado in the finals. Smith held a late lead at 5-3 before Yuzuik won two racks to tie the score at 5-5. Smith regained the lead and got to the hill at 6-5, but he was quickly joined at hill-hill by Yuzuik. The final rack went to Smith and Yuzuik went to the rail in third place.

The final match would see Smith attempt to de-feat Salgado twice, and that would prove to be

a tough task on this day. Salgado took a quick 2-0 lead and held the lead for the next couple games before Smith came back to tie the match at 4-4.

The 9th rack could have been the turning point of the match as Smith missed a 9-ball and saw Salgado take a 5-4 lead. Salgado then stretched that lead to two racks at 6-4.

Smith clawed back and won the next rack to get back within one rack at 6-5, but Salgado finished things off

with a win in the twelfth rack and the 7-5 victory.

Final Payouts:

1st Junior Salgado $390 2nd Justin Smith $2203rd Tony Zuzuik $230 (in all side pots)4th George Bell $80

Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Split24 teams came to Kitty’s 15 and under Scotch Doubles Tournament to vie for over $1,400 in prize money.

The hot-seat match found Harold Lyons & Pete Wil-liams battling Steve Henderson & Nai Saeler. After a tense and exciting match going hill-hill, Harold & Pete found themselves in the hot seat.

The matches for 5th and 6th found Elgin Miguet & Mario Salgado facing Tom Lutz & Chris (Crash) Reddin. Tom & Crash won their match 8 to 3. The other 5th and 6th match found Tyson Cole & Bernie Pappa playing Bill Vanderwyest & Ray Sabin. Bill & Ray won this match 9-7 to go on to play Tom & Crash.

The 3rd place match between the teams of Tom & Crash, and Bill & Ray went back and forth early until Tom & Crash took control and came away the winners 8-3. For their efforts, Bill & Ray took home $ 100.

This set up the 2nd and 3rd match between Tom & Crash versus Steve & Nai. This match went hill-hill, with Tom and Crash moving on to meet Harold & Pete. Steve & Nai took home $ 130 for finishing in 3rd place.

After a long and exciting day, the final match between Tom & Crash and Harold & Pete began. The two teams decided to split after the first set went to Tom & Crash. Each team went home with $ 555.

As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

New In Stock: Ultra Skin tips

By Roger LongAdvanced Certified Instructor

Ever since Moori introduced the first layered tip back in the early ‘90’s, there have been many new companies spring up and enter the layered tip market. The problem is, while many of them have offered a better price, few of them have been able to compete with Moori in quality.

One company that has, how-ever, is Kamui. With both their brown and their black tips, Ka-mui has not only taken over the number one spot as the world’s most desired tip, they have somehow been able to do it at a higher price. And in today’s sorry economy, commanding a higher price on any product, no matter how good it may be, is no small feat.

But even though Moori and Kamui have enjoyed long runs as the world’s premiere tips,

it is inevitable that someone else will eventually come up with a product that is just as good, if not better, and will do so at a lower price. It is inevitable because that is simply the nature of competition — sooner or later, every-one gets topped.

And in the case of layered tips, that time has apparently arrived.

The Ultra Skin tip has been out for a while now, but I didn’t put any in my stock until a customer of mine specifi-cally asked for them. Once I got them in, and installed one for that particular customer, he was so impressed with it that he immediately started telling his friends about it. That soon led to another installation, and then another, and then another. And all of the feed-back I’ve received from the new users has been the same: they say the Ultra Skin is responsive, it grabs the cue ball well, and it holds its shape well.

The way I usually judge the qual-

ity of a layered tip is by how well it machines during installation. If the tip will not cut evenly, or if it does not crown easily, or (especially) if it delaminates, then I do not consider it to be that great. My feeling is that if the tip will give you problems like that while it’s on the lathe, then it will probably give you problems later on.

The only two layered tips that have consistently shown good machining properties are Moori and Kamui. That is, up until now. So far, the Ultra Skin has demonstrated the same fine ma-chining qualities as Moori and Kamui. And after noticing this, and then after hearing the great reports from my customers, I decided to give the Ultra Skin a try for myself.

Now I’m happy to report that the Ultra Skin is just as good as my customers have been saying it is. It performs as well as it machines; and at this point, I really can’t tell the difference between it and the Kamui Black that I was us-

There’s A Great New Layered Tip On The Market

ing for the past year.

Now here’s the really good part: the installed price on Ultra Skin is roughly 40% less than that of Moori or Kamui. And in today’s economy, that’s a very welcome feature!

PDI August Player ProfileMichelle Riveria

For the month of August, we want to interview one of our own. We have chosen Michelle Riveria. We sat down with Michelle to ask her some questions, talked to her about her favorite things about darts, and to see if she had any advice for others wanting to start playing.

Michelle has lived in Arizona for 35 years. We asked Michelle how long she has been playing darts, Michelle said, “I have been playing darts for 3 years.” Out of those three years, Michelle has played PDI for 4 seasons now. We asked Michelle, what her favorite part about playing darts and she said “That the players in PDI are just like her family.” We then asked Michelle, if she had any advice for others that might be thinking about playing darts. She said, “Just do it, don’t hold back and don’t worry about what others have to say or think.” She also said, “Have fun and no matter what darts is only a game!”

For those of us, who know her and have had the pleasure to be able to play with Michelle, we consider her a great friend and dart player. We asked one of Michelle’s friends for their input about her and this is what they had to say. Landa Farnum, had this to say, “Michelle rocks!! She is a fantastic team player and motivates me to do better and believe in myself. I love playing with her, even when her darts are being dirty whores!! She is an awesome player and an awesome person, an awesome friend.”

The Medalist Dart Leagues wrapped up their season with a banquet and blind draw event at Toso’s on July 7th,

After plaques were handed out for the various divisions, the doubles event got underway with twenty two players fighting it out.

The winners side was taken by the team of Dario Meza & Dmitri Loll, who defeated Frank Demarco and Charlie Butler for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Nick Rivera & Amanda Mendoza defeated Duane Lance & Scott Butler to set-up a match with Demarco & Butler.

Nick & Amanda had already lost once to Frank & Charlie, and they would do so again in the semi-finals as Frank & Charlie moved to the finals and another shot at Dario & Dmitri.

Before the finals could get started, the players came together and decided on a split of 1st and 2nd place.

More Answers to Common Questions

Q: I noticed in your notes when it comes to practicing, what does 7 mark mean when you talk about practicing triples and doubles from 20’s to 15’s? What does a 5 count mean etc? Just trying to catch up on the jargon, and practice your routines!

Scorpion: Ok sorry, that is a cricket thing. A 3 mark means you counted 3 in the number you were aiming at.. could be 3 singles or a triple with 2 misses etc. So a 7 mark is 2 triples with a single so in 20’s, a 140 is a 7 mark, a nine count is a 180, a 5 count is 100. Got it?

Q: In regards to the wrist and arm when you throw, should it stay straight, and should you snap the wrist like in golf, hockey etc?

Scorpion: Umm... NO! to

the wrist snap...SMOOTHER THE BETTER. As far as your arm, YES straighter delivery is much better and will lead to a more consistent action but any style will give you success but some take WAY MORE effort to get good. If you look at any top 30 player in the world you will see smoothness, a full stroke and complete silent body while throwing.

Q: How long do you think it will take for me to go to qualifying school and get on the PDC…I’m aiming for the 2013 season, do you think it is possible for me to make the pros by then or will I make it at all? I’m living in Toronto Canada, may move back to Vancouver. I’m using 23 Grams, should I change to a lighter dart?

Scorpion: Ok, let me start with this. Only YOU can determine where darts will take you, not the people around you that will say “ You can’t do it” and trust me... there are a lot of those people along the way to success. I

will say you get out of life what you put in to it. If I had listened to those around me I would not be a firefighter, I would have never played on TV 9 times, played in 15 countries and I would never have had my own dart line, I would have never achieved what I did in Soccer...the list goes on...

There will always be people there to try and tear you down as they are jealous that you are doing something they just can’t. I sheltered myself a lot along the way in darts and most people out there have no clue what I am really like away from the game and I am ok with it. I always say “when I care what you think, you will know the real ME” and that is not many. Again, I have written articles here about goal setting and to be honest I would hazard a guess that achieving a tour card in 2013 would be unlikely but not impos-sible. It is only 7 months away and you would need to raise the standard of your performance higher plus your mental toughness to achieve that goal. I don’t know you but I do know how

hard the PDC tour really is... EVERYONE throws a 100 average at any moment on the floor and you RARELY win a leg with more than 18 darts and you better be starting to win with a 18 dart game. The weight of your dart? That’s up to you. The average is 21-23g in steel and 18-20 gm in soft tip, I use a range from 19-23gm at times with my normal being 19 or 21g on the day for steel and 18-20gm in soft. When I struggle I go a bit heavier to get more feedback from my dart... the good thing about having your own dart line is all of them are the same except for the weight. I would say that you have more opportunity to play in the east coast of either Canada or America then you do in the west....just food for thought.

Mike, you guys have been doing a lot of big handicapped tournaments lately. Why and do you think they work?

Yes, we are trying to do one per month and I feel it has been working. You will always have some problems and everyone will not be pleased, but for the most part they have been great.

Yesterday, we had our July tournament and 56 players showed up. We did the draw where the lower players drew the chips first and would not draw each other, to try to even it out. It went well, except that we had more players under 2.5 than we did over. This meant that a few players could draw a

lower player. There is absolutely noth-ing you can do about it.

A few lower players that drew lower players were upset. I understand them wondering why this happened. My problem is when they take it way to far, even after it was explained to them.

A couple even badgered our guys run-ning the tournament and wouldn’t lis-ten to reason. That is a joke. Grow up, and have fun. It is a dart tournament; not life or death. The bar added $740 to the tournament, but you’re going to bad mouth them and the tournament director?

And when it was all said and done, a 1.5 player was on the winning team. How much better can it get? It was her

and her husband’s first time here and they loved it.

They were worried because they heard that all of the “Masters were here” and they didn’t like low shooters.

After the tournament, I got a great message on Facebook from her hus-band thanking all of the Masters players for treating them so nice and making them feel comfortable. They said they would be back and tell all of their friends in PDI to come as well.

So, does it work? Yes, it does. When a first time tournament player can come in and win in a 28 team tournament, it doesn’t get any better than that.

To see how happy Tammie was should be why we all play. Not to rag on the

tourmanent director because you got a bad draw.

Look in the mirror, you know who you are.

Again, these are just my opin-ions and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Bullshooters 6th Annual Handicap Dart Tournament

Mike Bates and Thad Uraine would like to thanks all the dart players, which came out to play.

It was a great tournament. Thank you to Bullshooters and their staff for the awe-some job that they did.

Mike and Thad would like to congratulate Brad Halley and Tammie Hermanek for throwing great darts in the 6th Annual Handicap Shoot at Bullshooters. 56 players showed up and payout went from $1,000.00 to $1,200.00 total payout. Don’t think you can win a tournament like this? Take a step back and rethink it. This is a great tournament for players that have a lower average. My name is Tammie Hermanek, I am a 1.7 average in league, my partner and I took first, with the handicapped format this makes the tournament fun and fair for every-one. Come out and see for yourselves.

On Sat. July 14th, lots of great people showed up to help some great ladies raise money to do the Breast Cancer Walk later this year.

They do it to support friends and family that have battled this terrible disease. They are heroes, so when we get a chance to support them, we have to take it.

And yes, as always, the Dart Players came through with 84 players at Bullshooters.

Lots of prizes were there and the tickets were flowing like the Colorado River. Over 40 great prizes would be won and over $2000 would be raised.

Scott Paga took time out of his day to come and run the tournament to perfection.

Lisa Yee played and made sure all matches were reported and the boards were full all afternoon. It was great to see so much support.

I would like to thank all of the great ladies who will participate in the walk and also for choosing Bullshooters to host this awesome event.

I wish them all luck and hope we helped make it easier for them to support this great fight.

A field of 36 players descended on Stingers Sports Bar on July 28th to compete in the July $1000 dart shoot.

The winners side came down to Tom Aranda & Larry Colburn vs Pete Linares & Tyler Hamilton. This match would belong to Aranda & Colburn as Pete and Tyler made the trip to the one loss side.

On the one loss side, John Gray & Nick Rivera were just finishing off Jim Wisner & Rick Boehl in 4th place.

Linares and Hamilton bounced back nicely from their winners side loss, and sent Gray and Rivera to the sidelines in third place.

The two final teams negotiated for a while over whether to split from that point, and it looked like the match would be on as both teams thought they were the favor-ites.

Then a player named Rick Bobel told me about dart tournaments and I started to attend them and met some of the people that molded me into the player I am today. Two of the most influential people were Tom Slivka and Mike Bates, they showed me how to play and act like a professional at tournaments. Home Room (s): Bullshooters

Al Post Wins at The Deli

Al Post completed an undefeated run through the field of eighteen players at the Deli’s 9 & Under 8-Ball event on July 21st.

Post was challenged for the hot-seat by Patrick Zientek, but rose to the chal-lenge to send Zientek to the one loss side.

On the one loss side, early favorite Dana Moore was being eliminiated by Va-reck Wright. Moore finished in fourth; one spot out of the money.

Zientek took the trip to the one loss side to take on Wright, but once again found himself on the wrong end of the game as Wright defeated him in third place.

The double elimination final match would only go one game as Post took con-trol and fired in some very tough shots to win the game, match and tournament over Wright.

Post earned $120 for first, while Wright settled for $50 in second place prize money. Zientek took home $10 for third place.

Kyra Avalos Takes Third in WisconsinRegular readers of the Billiard and Dart News are very familiar with the pool playing abil-ity of Carlos Avalos and more recent-ly, the play of Carlos’ son Mark. It turns out that they are not the only pool players in the Avalos family.

10-year old Kyra Avalos made her national debut at Romines in Greenfield, Wisconsin at the Junior Nationals on July 11th-15th, and made quite a splash.

Kyra was competing in the 14 & Under Girls Division and started off her cam-paign with four straight wins (with a combined record of 28-8) to find herself in a match for the hot-seat.

Kyra put up a fight, but lost the hot-seat match and then ran out of steam on the one loss side to settle for third place.

For her third place finish, Kyra took home a prize package worth nearly $400, as well as memories that will last a lifetime.

Billiard Education Foundation Executive Director Laura Smith commented after the tournament, “Kyra had a great tournament and I’m confident that if she chooses, she’ll excel in this sport.”.
