REALIZING A VISION

CAMPAIGN MILESTONE

The Best Care, Right Place campaign has helped NSMC deepenand expand its relationship with Massachusetts General Hospitaland make major improvements to the Salem Campus. Listed here

are some of the projects that the campaign has helped fund.

“In the 1970s, my father used to saythat the Medical Center could do justabout anything with a million dollars,”recalled former NSMC Trustee MikeDavenport, whose family has enjoyed along and generous history withNSMC. “He would be thrilled to seewhat we’ve done together to providethe highest-quality care in a now vastlyimproved setting.”

Transforming healthcare on theNorth Shore meant transformingNSMC’s approach to philanthropy. Toscale up for its largest-ever fundraisingeffort, the Medical Center reorganizedits Board of Trustees and replaced itslongstanding NSMC FoundationBoard with a new DevelopmentCommittee charged with engagingsignificant, broad-based support forthe Best Care, Right Place campaign.

“Bringing responsibility for thecampaign to the board level signaled to thecommunity that NSMC’s leadership wasfully committed to achieving success,” saysformer NSMC Board Chairman GarySpiess, who oversaw the transition. That success included four early $1 million gifts—NSMC’s first—from TheEastern Bank Charitable Foundation, theMorton and Lillian Waldfogel CharitableFoundation, Arthur and Eunice Epsteinand Leonard and Penny Axelrod. Inaddition, three years of North Shore

15-bed cardiology unit on Davenport 5, anew 20-bed ICU, 40 new private inpatientrooms, a new breast health center and newfamily waiting areas—constitute the single-largest investment in inpatient care inNSMC’s history. A $1 million matchingchallenge grant from the Davenport Fund, announced at the Peabody Essex Museumevent, pushed the record-setting campaignover the finish line.

Salem Hospital CT technologists Judy Jennings, R.T.R., (with patient) and Brenda Lucier, R.T.R. The RadiologyDepartment was one of many areas on the Salem Campus to benefit from the Best Care, Right Place campaign.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATIONPROGRAM RECOGNIZEDNSMC’s Continuing Medical Education program has achieved Level IIIAccreditation with Commendation. NSMC is the first Partners hospital andone of just nine hospitals in the state to achieve this extraordinary success. The decision by the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee onAccreditation Review was based on the review of NSMC’s self-study report, evidence of our performance in practice and a comprehensivereaccreditation interview. This achievement reflects the commitment of both the Medical Staffand the Medical Center to continuous clinical improvement andprofessional excellence. It also reflects the leadership of Jack Karas, M.D.,Director of Medical Education, and the dedication of Michelle Butler,Director of the Medical Staff Office, and staff members Carole Morahanand Lenora Salvucci.

NEW WORK-PLACE SAFETYHOTLINE, EXTENSION 5000

A new work-place safety hotline and e-mail address have been set up togive staff members a quick and easyway to report environmental safetyconcerns. Not to be confused withpatient safety, work-place safetyencompasses hazards relating toNSMC’s physical plant andgrounds, such as potholes, brokenfloor tiles, icy sidewalks, poor airquality and frayed electrical wires. To report a work-place safetyconcern, call extension 5000 or e-mail safetyhotline@ partners.org.

Cancer WALK proceeds went towardconstruction of the Mass General/NorthShore Cancer Center. NSMC Trustee Richard Bane, whochairs the Trustee Development Committee, says support from NSMC physicians was

especially inspiring. “They understood betterthan anyone the difference these projectswould mean for patient care, and they helpedus deliver on our promise.” The tangible improvements madepossible by the Best Care, Right Placecampaign have propelled NSMC to a newchapter in its history, says Senior VicePresident of Development Sara Andrews.“More than just bricks and mortar, theseprojects have also facilitated a higher level ofcollaboration between NSMC and MGH inoutpatient care and a better inpatientexperience, too. We are enormously grateful toeveryone who stepped forward and to ourboard leadership who championed our vision.”

SALEM HOSPITAL RE-VERIFIED ASLEVEL III TRAUMA CENTERSalem Hospital has been re-verified as a Level III Trauma Center by theAmerican College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the traumacenter's dedication to providing optimal care for critically injured patients.Requirements for Level III designation include 24-hour-a-day coverage bytrauma-trained surgeons, emergency department physicians and nurses, aswell as 24-hour-a-day access to anesthesia, laboratory and radiology services. This achievement reflects the ongoing hard work and commitment ofphysicians, caregivers and staff in the Emergency Department and throughoutthe Medical Center. It is also a reminder of the vitally important life-savingresources that the entire NSMC family provides to our community.

“We are enormouslygrateful to everyone who stepped forwardand to our boardleadership whochampioned our vision.”[

Maria Molena, Housekeeper, Salem HospitalMaria Molena is an important member of the Phippen 6 care team. Somuch so that the staff on the busy 16-bed med/surg unit has asked thatshe never be given a different assignment.

“Maria is a hard worker, very professional and always pleasant,” saysKathy Clune, R.N., Nurse Manager on the unit. “She understands thatteamwork is central to our success and that everything we do revolvesaround the patient. She makes her job look easy—which it isn’t, she’s theonly housekeeper on the floor—and always has a smile on her face. Weall love her.”

To improve her ability to communicate with both staff and patients,Molena has been taking advantage of the free English as a Second

Language (ESL) classes offered by NSMC for thepast year. “Now when I go into a patient room, I can say ‘Good morning, how are you feelingtoday?’ or talk with their family,” says Molena, anative of Mexico City, whose primary language isSpanish. “I enjoy making that connection. It makesa big difference.” The ESL classes were also an important step forMolena in her quest to become a U.S. citizen, adream she realized this past March—alongside herdaughter Natalie, a per diem unit secretary at NSMC—after taking a free U.S. Citizenship class atNSMC. Both the ESL and Citizenship classes are being offered by the Human Resources Departmentas a benefit to employees and as a way to improve the patient experience. An employee at NSMC for the past 10 years, Molena has three children and two grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys crocheting, reading and going to the gym. For more information on the free NSMC U.S. Citizenship class, contact Sandie Rossetti in HumanResources at 978-354-4323.
