FIRST (SCOTS) PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN & MEN’S BIBLE STUDY

What is Presbyterian Women? First (Scots) Presbyterian Women strive to unite all women of the church in Christian fellowship through small groups and gatherings. Presbyterian Women are organized into small groups, called Circles, that meet monthly to provide an inclusive, caring community of women united in Christian fellowship. A Circle is a place where faith is nurtured and growth takes place through worship, study, friendship, and outreach. It is a place where women encourage and support one another to bear personal witness to Christ in the family, in the congregation, in the community, and around the world. Through their activities and donations, the Circles support the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery, Thornwell Home and School for Children in Clinton, SC, Presbyterian Village of Summerville residents, our church’s freshmen college students, special offerings, pastoral care and local missions. Circles often have specific projects that they support as well. Current Circles Our congregation has five Circles that meet once a month. All women of the congregation are invited to visit the Circles and join one that fits their schedule and interests. LOCAL MISSIONS

FIRST (SCOTS) PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH -REFLECTING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST IN THE COMMUNITY First (Scots) is involved in our local community through financial support and hands-on volunteer support for some high impact non-profit organizations in the Charleston metro area.

One of the organizations we support is Habitat for Humanity. Charleston Habitat for Humanity is excited to welcome back First (Scots) Presbyterian Church for their latest Home Sponsor & Build. For Fall 2012, we will be partnering to build our first home in our newly purchased subdivision of Joppa Way in North Charleston. The location is one mile from the Montague Avenue Exit off of I-26. This community was started by another non-profit in 2005, there are 18 occupied homes, and Charleston Habitat owns the remaining 23 lots. Our goal is a fully-developed, vibrant community and our first homeowner is Ebony Pinckney, pictured below with her seven year old son Malachi. Ebony has completed most of her program requirements and will be on-site building each Saturday with First (Scots).

We intend to make the first volunteer Saturday for First (Scots) on September 22nd when we will build and raise the walls of Ebony’s home. We will have a dedication ceremony at lunch that will include members of our staff and Board and any member of First (Scots) congregation that would like to join us. We plan on building Saturdays throughout Fall 2012 with the home completed just before Christmas. The volunteer day will run from 8:30am to 4:00pm with a 45 minute break for lunch and we are looking for 14-15 volunteers for each morning and afternoon shift.

We are really looking forward to strengthening our partnership with First (Scots) Presbyterian Church through Ebony’s home this fall. Jeremy D. Browning Executive Director Charleston Habitat for Humanity

J K J K J K J K J J College of Elders to Gather on September 23

The College of Elders and their spouses will convene in Molly Wier Hall at 5:30 on Sunday, September 23, for a pot-luck supper followed immediately by a program led by Rev. James Rogers. Current members of the Session and their spouses are also invited and encouraged to attend. Rev. Rogers will speak about his experience as a delegate to the 220th General Assembly of the PC(USA) in Pittsburgh in July. Held at a time when the unity of the PC(USA) is under considerable stress, this Assembly received national attention as it struggled with high-profile issues including same-gender marriage, nongeographic presbyteries, and divestment from companies whose business in Israel is perceived as “nonpeaceful.” According to one commentator, it “defined [itself] chiefly by what it decided not to do.” A first-time delegate to a General Assembly meeting, Rev. Rogers will offer his own commentary in an up-close-and-personal perspective of this important event. Established in 2010, the College of Elders consists of all members of First (Scots) who have been ordained as a ruling or teaching elder in any Presbyterian or Reformed congregation and who do not currently serve on the Session. All elders attending the September 23 meeting are asked to bring one dish suitable for sharing at a light Sunday’s supper. Please RSVP to Anne in the church office (722-8882).

Taizé Prayer Worship with Communion at First (Scots) First and Third Wednesdays of the Month (September 19 – May 15)

What is Taizé? Taizé is a small town in the south of Burgundy, France where Brother Roger Schutz founded a community devoted to prayer and living a parable of reconciliation over 70 years ago. At first the community served people displaced by World War II, many of whom were Jews. There were many children orphaned by the war and many of these children were welcomed at Taizé by Brother Roger and his sister Genevieve. Also welcomed were German prisoners of war being detained in France.

Today the Community is made up of brothers from all the continents and major denominations who gather together three times a day, seven days a week, throughout the year to pray. A purpose of the community is to bring all together in Christ.

What is Taizé worship? The style of Taizé worship has been developed by the community at Taizé. What is unique to the Taizé worship are singing, prayer, and readings from the Bible and period of silence. The repetition of simple musical lines and core biblical texts can be sung by a whole assembly of various nationalities, languages, and denominations. And silence is simply holding oneself in a presence and letting Christ, through the Holy Spirit, pray in us.

At First (Scots), the Taizé prayer worship with communion will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from September to May in the Lilly Chapel from 5:30pm to 6pm followed by communion. (the first Taize service this year will be held on Wednesday, September 19).

Please join us for this spiritual prayer worship.

GODVIEWS: The Convictions that Drive Us and Divide Us. – A Christian Education course for adults based on book by Dr. Jack Haberer which identifies five different ways that individual Christians may perceive God working in their lives and in the life of the Church. In so doing, Haberer offers a context for understanding why committed Christians can disagree so profoundly, and suggests some approaches toward conflict resolution. GodViews was published in 2001, written during a time of deep division within the PC(USA). Therefore, as a work of applied theology, its insights are vital to us now as our denomination is once again faced with divisive theological and governmental issues. We invite all women to join us to engage the scriptures and one another in faith and friendship, seeking strength and encouragement for daily life. Come nurture your spiritual self on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:15. Rev. Three kings, while following a star, stop at the cottage asking to rest awhile. Intrigue ensues when the mother sees "All That Gold" and sings what she could do for her child with it. If you would enjoy singing in the Chorus of Villagers and Shepherds who bring food and entertainment for the kings, please plan to rehearse with us in the First (Scots) choir room. Welcome Home Youth Mission Teams! Our middle school mission team served in Asheville, NC during June and partnered with a variety of urban mission projects including a homeless assistance agency, a center for children with developmental disabilities, a food bank (sorting potatoes!), a veteran’s ministry, a children's day camp for at risk children, and a women's shelter. The team worked in a garden, shared lunch, painted, landscaped, served ice cream sundaes, played water games, sorted supplies, collected trash and more, all while meeting many people who call Asheville home. They even got to experience some whitewater rafting! Team members included:

Our high school mission team served in New Orleans in July, painting the local schools, helping teachers get ready for the school year, assisting at the local food bank, working at a therapeutic horse riding center, and more. One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was visiting the Williams family at their home and hearing their story of faith and hope as they survived the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by staying in their attic for three days. Did I mention that the mission team got to eat beignets at Café du Monde and explore the French Quarter? Team members included:
