43rd ANNUAL NORTH-SOUTH FORD F-100 RUN

BY: Jim Dillinger

Where you there? If you missed this year’s edition of this annual gathering of F-100 aficionados, I can only offer you my condolences, since you missed ‘a whale of a good time’. While the event was once again held in picturesque Morro Bay, CA, there was a whole different flavor than last year’s run. To begin with, changing to a different host hotel made the dynamics totally different. This year, being at the La Serena Inn put everyone much closer to the bay front shops and restaurants, which gave everyone a whole new vista of possible activities available to them. For the most part, one could walk to the “Embarcadero” and spend as much time as they wanted shopping, eating, sight-seeing, or whatever. Next, by utilizing the breakfast/conference room at the Inn for our registration, and the sale of shirts and raffle tickets, there was a whole different feel. Because of the room’s multiple uses, the committee was required to set up registration, then break things down each day. Plus the room was quite a bit smaller than what we’ve been used to in the past, so I guess you could say registration was “more intimate” than usual. Yet, somehow it all worked well, and very few, if any, complaints were heard. The number of folks attending this year was down slightly, and several discussions could be heard espousing a number of different opinions on why that was. Many expressed the thought that peoples priorities have changed because of the economy. Still others suggested that it’s simply a result of interest in the old trucks waning, and there being fewer of them out there. Some people are even suggesting that we’re not attracting “new blood” to the hobby, and more and more “old timers” are falling by the wayside. Whatever the reason, or reasons, there may have been fewer trucks, but the quality certainly hasn’t diminished. There were a bunch of absolutely gorgeous trucks to view and enjoy. The people given the task of judging the trucks for the numerous awards definitely had their work cut out for them. There were half a dozen trucks that could have easily been selected as Best Of Show. Word is that the scoring of points was really tight this year. The top two trucks, Larry & Yolanda Squarcia’s “Best Of Show”, yellow 56 big window 56, and Al & Pam Ubrun’s “Preston Ledbetter Award”, glossy black 56 are stunning trucks that are excellent examples of the high quality of the trucks showing up for this event.

WINNER: BEST OF SHOW WINNER: PRESTON LEDBETTER AWARD Things started bright and early on Friday morning as approximately 30 trucks gathered to participate in the always popular “Mystery Cruise”. We need to remember that Morro Bay is a town that is somewhat isolated along the central California coast, so there aren’t a lot of ‘cruise-in’ type stops to choose from, and since the majority of them were

Page 3: September 2013

visited on last year’s Mystery Cruise, it was decided to head inland to Atascadero this year. What might have been missing in quantity was certainly more than made up for in quality. After a very leisurely scenic cruise through the coastal foothills, the gang pulled into the property of Jim & Willie Riffenburg. Their pastoral property is home to a nice large, very well equipped shop that houses not only the machinery to perform advanced mechanical magic on their old cars, but there’s also a really nice, eclectic collection of cars. The Riffenburgh’s are members of the Early Ford V-8 Club, and several of the club members joined in on the day’s festivities, making all us truckers feel very welcome. Plus, they brought their cars as well, which made for a mini car show. The time spent there was made even more enjoyable as Jim Riffenburg spent a lot of time enthralling us with the stories behind many of the cars and memorabilia in their vast collection.

The gang from the Early Ford V-8 Club After a great visit with the Riffenburgh’s and the Early Ford V-8 Club members, it was off to the In-N-Out Burger in Atascadero for lunch. While there, yours truly received a phone call summoning me back to Morro Bay for some “Official Duties”, so I didn’t get to finish the cruise with everyone else, but I heard it was a great time.

Friday night the ‘Embarcadero Cruise and Ice Cream Social’ happened again this year, and the positive comments could be heard throughout the night. Last year, the cruise began with closing off a block-long stretch of Main Street for about an hour while participants visited the Harbor View Garage. The plan was to start this year’s cruise the same way, but at the last minute we learned that the owner was experiencing some health problems, and was unable to accommodate us. This necessitated finding somewhere else to form up for the beginning of the cruise. It was decided to have everyone meet at the access road to the marina, and it worked out really well. Having 30 or so tucks lined up, staging to start cruising was a sight to behold. From the staging area, we rolled on down the Embarcadero, much to the delight of the locals and tourists alike. It’s always fun to see the smiles, and receive the waves and ‘thumbs up’ from people watching all the colorful trucks cruising by, and trust me when I say there was no shortage of either.

After a couple of circuits along the waterfront, everyone pulled off onto a side street that had been blocked off just for the cruise participants. From there, it was a very short walk to the Sun-N-Buns Bakery, where everyone was treated to a free ice cream (cone or cup) and cookie. This is the second year the owners of this shop have donated these treats to all the North-South participants. This is another fine example of the hospitality we’re shown when we descend on this community in August. Saturday dawned bright and early for your hard working committee members who made their way to Tidelands Park, located on the waterfront, at the south end of the Embarcadero, to prepare for the day’s Show-N-Shine activities. While people started showing up earlier, the official starting time of 8:00 AM, saw 48 colorful, fantastic trucks scattered throughout the park with the bay providing the perfect backdrop to show them off. I’ve been attending this event for 10 years, and as far as I’m concerned there’s never been a more picturesque, relaxing setting for the North-South Show-N-Shine. Those who are much better photographers than I could ever hope to be were provided with the perfect setting to get some award winning pictures.

Page 5: September 2013

5

Having the show at Tidelands Park also made it possible for a much larger than normal number of spectators to enjoy the trucks, and to interact with all the truck owners. The enthusiasm shown by the uninitiated was an uplifting experience, and what a joy it was to see all the smiles throughout the day. Who knows, maybe there was one or two people viewing the show that could have been motivated to get involved with our hobby as a participant rather than a spectator.

Page 6: September 2013

Throughout the day, the ladies running the raffle kept participants loaded up with goodies to take home. There were enough prizes that almost everyone that bought tickets were able to win at least one prize. As always, there were some who took home quite a few great prizes. A big thank you needs to go out to all the women that work so hard to make the raffle a success.

This year saw the addition of a BBQ lunch, catered by the Brickhouse BBQ Restaurant that was a gourmet’s delight. They prepared Pulled Pork BBQ sandwiches, fantastic BBQ Beef Ribs, and grilled Jumbo Hot Dogs, all of which were absolutely delicious. I’m a big fan of Pulled Pork sandwiches, and can honestly say these are the best I’ve ever had. If you’re ever visiting Morro Bay, search out the Brickhouse Restaurant and give them a try. You won’t be sorry. The Show-N-Shine wrapped up at about 3:00 PM, and everyone headed back to their rooms to get a short rest, and prepare for the evening’s festivities at the Banquet/Awards Ceremony, held at the Morro Bay Community Center. There, dinner was prepared by, once again, the Brickhouse BBQ Restaurant, and just as it was with the lunch, it was

Page 7: September 2013

7

delicious. The menu consisted of BBQ Tri-Tip, BBQ Chicken, or a Pasta dish for those wanting vegetarian. The sides were some yummy baked beans, garlic green beans, salad, rolls, and coffee. For desert they served a really nice cheese cake that seemed to disappear as fast as they set it out. After the dinner, the awards ceremony took place, and with the reduced attendance this year it seemed that almost everyone won something, even if it might have been one of great gag awards. Two very special awards, that recognize individual people who have given much to the ongoing success of the North-South Run are the “Fat Fender Award” sponsored by the Livermore Chapter of F-100 Elite, and “The Dianne Souza Memorial Award”. It was total serendipity that the recipients were; “Fat Fender Award” , John Blanco, and “The Dianne Souza Memorial Award”, Rosie Blanco. Sadly, neither of them were able to make the event this year, so they didn’t get their plaques until after their fellow club members got home. In spite of there being problems with the sound system, I think most everyone enjoyed the ceremony. At the conclusion of the awards, the super raffle was held, with a number of “Super” prizes being given away. The list of trophy winners can be found below. At the conclusion of the weekend’s festivities, your North-South Run Committee got together to critique the event, as well as begin the planning for next year’s run….The 44th Annual North-South Ford F-100 Run. Some of the issues decided on were; Return to Morro Bay next year, the dates being August 15 thru 17, 2014: La Serena Inn will once again be the Host Hotel (They’re set up to begin taking reservations, so get yours in early): We’ll get Brickhouse BBQ Restaurant to once again cater the Saturday lunch, as well as the banquet: Have the Show-N-Shine at Tidelands Park again: and we’ll make every effort to have the Mystery Cruise and the Friday night Embarcadero Cruise/Ice Cream Social again as well. So, stay tuned!! As soon as we can get the artwork completed, we’ll start getting flyers and entry forms out. Be sure to register early, and hopefully we’ll see you there next year. CONGRATULATIONS ONE AND ALL!!!

******************************************************************************************** A man runs into the vet’s office carrying his dog, screaming for help. The vet rushes him back to an examination room and has him put his dog down on the examination table. The vet examines the still, limp body and after a few moments, tells the man that his dog, regrettably, is dead. The man, clearly agitated and not willing to accept this, demands a second opinion. The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat and puts the cat down next to the dog’s body. The cat sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, poking and sniffing the dog’s body and finally looks at the vet and meows. The vet looks at the man and says, “I’m sorry, but the cat thinks that your dog is dead, too.” The man is still unwilling to accept that his dog is dead. So the vet brings in a black Labrador retriever. The lab sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, and finally looks at the vet and barks. The vet looks at the man and says, “I’m sorry, but the lab thinks your dog is dead too.” The man, finally resigned to the diagnosis, thanks the vet and asks how much he owes. The vet answers, “$650.” “$650 to tell me my dog is dead?” exclaims the man. “Well,” the vet replies, “I would only have charged you $50 for my initial diagnosis. The additional $600 was for the cat scan and lab tests.

EAST BAY BANTER By: Ken Rogers

Hi From East Bay, At our meeting on July 25th we voted in new members Carl and Adrianna Anderson. The Anderson’s own a 57 Ranchero, and recently purchased a 56 F-100. At our August 1st meeting we voted in Roger Palmer and his 54 F-100. We welcome you folks to our chapter, and hope you enjoy the club. On July 29th we had a good turnout of F-100’s for the “National Night Out” against crime. We had a police escort through the streets of Hayward. Lots of rods, customs, and trucks showed up for this cruise. After the cruise we all met at Kennedy Park for a BBQ. On August 17th we had some members that could not make it to the North-South Run attend the Niles show. This show always has a nice turnout, with great weather. Just like clockwork, the third weekend of August marks the gathering of F-100 Ford owners at the annual North-South Ford F-100 Run. 43 years ago, two groups representing Ford F-100 Elite of Northern California and Pickups Limited of Southern California came up with the idea of having an event in the central area of the State that all the members could attend. At 43 years of age, it is one of the older car or truck events around. What is mind boggling is the fact that there are some members from both clubs that have been to all 43 of the runs. Again, this year, the event was held in the beautiful city of Morro Bay. The city is thrilled to have the F-100’s in town and worked with the committee to make this event a success, and it sure was. On Friday there was the “Mystery Cruise”, for those that wanted to go. Then on Friday night it was cruise the downtown Embarcadero, which fronts the bay. There were F-100’s everywhere looking good. After the cruise the truckers enjoyed the free ice cream and cookie social.

Page 9: September 2013

On Saturday the Show-N-Shine was at Tidelands Park, which is right next to the bay, which was a great setting. The F-100’s were looking good on the grass. A lot of folks came down to check out the trucks. The raffle lasted most of the day, with lots of stuff to win. There were Hot Wheels® Races that were a big hit with all the truckers. Saturday night everyone went to the Morro Bay Community Center for the banquet and awards ceremony. The food was good, and many awards were given out to the truckers. A highlight for our chapter was having all three of the trucks representing East Bay Chapter winning a Top 20 Trucks award. Overall, this was a good show, enjoyed by all, I am sure. While it may not be the largest F-100 show around, many will attest that it is the best. In the F-100 world, you should attend the North-South Run to see what we are all about. If you’d like to go, or would like more information about the event, give Earl Pecka a call for details. His number is (209)835-7629. We’d like to see you there. See ya’ Kenny Rogers East Bay Chapter

TRIVIA Last month’s question: What TV. show had the star’s real life husband playing the role of “The Blue Djinn”? What

was his name? Answer: Okay Jim, this wasn't a easy one. Did a lot of research until I finally found it. The Blue Djinn was Michale Anasara of I Dream Of Jeannie. He is Married to Barbara Eden. I should get bonus points for this one. Lol... Susan Davis Modesto This month’s question: What was the first official White House Car?

Modesto Happenings

By: Bob Hansen Modesto made a unique trophy for “Rust” to be presented at the North/South Run. Bob Hansen and Dusty Johnson collaborated to come up with a rusty metal Ford truck cut-out on a wood and rusty parts base. Winner of the “Rust Bucket Award” was Miguel from the San Gabriel Chapter for his ’56 F-100. Congrats to Miguel – no hard feelings! Nancy Agrusa said “it’s almost a flatbed” and that Miguel was pleased with winning it thanks to his great sense of

Page 10: September 2013

humor! Unfortunately, no one from Modesto Chapter was able to make the run this year, but thank you to Earl Pecka for delivering the trophy for us John Walsh and Tom Tomberlin have been making the rounds to all the local car shows and distributing flyers for the Eric Wika Memorial Car Show that will be held on September 22, 2013 at The Fruit Yard. This event is in memory of Eric Wika who passed away from a disease called MARFAN SYNDROME, with all proceeds going directly to MARFAN in hopes of one day finding a cure. The car show at Walker Ranch was attended by some of the Modesto gang...in attendance was John & Linda Walsh, Michael & Leanne Robinson, Spencer Rose, and Ralph & Sherrel Haverson. All had a great

time with Ralph & Sherrel winning a trophy for their 1927 Ford Model T. Tom & Cheryl Day, Ralph & Sherrel Haverson, Tom Tomberlin, John Walsh, Carl Piercefield and Mike Wika attended the car show at Del Rio Country Club. It was a really hot day but all enjoyed looking at the more than 150 cars and trucks that were there. Breakfast and lunch were served to all the registered entrants along with drinks of your choice. Good day for all.

Who’s Working on What Bob and Susan Hansen have been busy NOT working on anything except fun and relaxation on the Southern

Oregon coast. Word is out that Oregon has too many fish in the rivers and Bob has been busy trying to eliminate that problem for them. So thank you to Linda Walsh for putting together the newsletter information this month. Hope to see everyone September 15th at the anniversary run in Pleasanton and September 22nd at the Wika Memorial Show at the Fruit Yard in Modesto!

Another North South has come and gone. We had 4 out of 5 of our members join in on the fun with prospective member and friend Mario Vanotti who also came for the fun. Half of us came up on Thursday and the other half on Friday. We had been watching the weather all week and thought it would be cooler than expected but Mother Nature was good to us. It was never really foggy at least not all day; the sun would pop out every once and awhile. But it was never really cold just right. The Friday night cruise and ice cream social was even better than last year. The group of trucks lined up at the marina then looped around the Embarcadero a couple of times as people raved at them. Then we parked and were able to get a great dessert of ice cream and homemade cookies. Some of us headed over to a garage in the area that works on old vehicles. It made for a long day but it was well worth it. Saturday we headed over to the park by the marina. The trucks were parked on a great grass space to show and shine. The regular raffle was ongoing till the end of the show. Everyone seemed happy with what they won. When 3 o’clock came everyone loaded up their trucks and headed back to their rooms to get cleaned up for the evening festivities. This year there was plenty of room for everyone in the same building with room to spare. Dinner was the best we’ve had had in years. It was catered by the guy that had done the BBQ out at the park. We had BBQ tri-tip, chicken and a vegetarian dish for everyone to partake in. There was salad, a vegetable, rolls and the smoothest cheesecake for dessert. All and all it was a great feast. After dinner the super raffle, 50/50 and awards were done. There was lots of clapping and laughing as the awards were given out especially for the fun awards. Art from out club got needs chrome, under construction and beater truck. It sounds like Art needs to get to work on his truck and do some work in the wallet department. But this was the first year that he had actually brought his truck. He has always been a passenger with someone else. So his coming in a truck should be an award in itself.

LIVERMORE LINES

By: George Withers

While I was unable to attend this year's North - South Run, I'm told by some who did attend that they had a great time, they liked the grass parking area, and the food was great!! It seem as though it was another great success for

Page 12: September 2013

the North & South Event Planning Committee. Unfortunately, I was playing Fireman at the Pleasanton Fireman's Muster in downtown Pleasanton and this was a great event as well!!

Jim, Could you please share a few pics of my 55 with the Livermore chapter or in your newsletter? I just completed (in its current drivable state) my frame off rebuild in just over a year. Say hi to Nancy for me! Thank you Eric Wentworth.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY !!!!

Did you know that your club is 44 years old? Think about it. How many other car/truck clubs do you know of that can claim that kind of longevity? There have been more memories made in that time than can begin to be counted, but the great thing is the fact that we’re not done yet. We may be getting older, and some of us may be slowing down a little, but what we’re losing in speed, we’re making up for in finesse. It’s time to get all the chapter members together to celebrate this long run of F-100 fun, and we will be doing just that on Sunday, September 15, 2013. This is a WOW year party, with over 25 milestone awards being presented to members.. WHERE: Shadow Cliffs Park, Pleasanton TIME: 10:30ish to ???

There will be a raffle, and a 50/50 raffle, running board lunch, with dessert provided by our club. Please remember to bring a raffle prize to donate (white elephant prizes welcomed). Hope we see you there for fun, friends and celebrating. If you have any questions, call Nancy at (925)455-8342

Car Show for the Vets presents: “Cars and Bikes and Stars and Stripes” - A Different Kind of Car Show

A Little History In 2002, Monterey Bay PT Cruisers and PT Cruisers of Silicon Valley joined forces for two quick car shows on Veterans Day: in the morning, at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto; and in the afternoon at the VA Hospital in Menlo Park. The shows were small, the effect was phenomenal. And…they asked us back. They have been asking us back for the last seven years. In year two, we invited two local Corvette clubs; in year three - Corvettes and mini Coopers (and one Viper); for the last three years, California Customs and Classics joined us. Last year we had over 70 cars from twelve different clubs from Greenfield to Livermore. This year we want to surpass even that – we’re shooting 100 cars at least! (Motorcycles, too!) Every year these guys and gals truly look forward to having us come by - on the weekend before Veterans Day - and share some time. Hey, we’re just car nuts, but we make a difference in their lives. Every Year Has Its Story We have given a destitute and troubled man back his dignity - for at least a day – when he was able to share the Grand Prize – a radio controlled race car - with his son. We've given rides in our cars to senior vets and others that remind them of happier times, when they were younger and more vital and their lives were full of promise – and they went off to do their duty. And so we did ours that day. We thanked them One year, we gave young Iraq war vet a reason to interact with other brain-injured comrades by getting him interested in radio-controlled cars. Up to that point he was depressed and withdrawn. It’s called Recreational Therapy for a reason. The Really Fun Part Through our raffle – just for the vets - we have given much-needed socks, hats, clothes, underwear, sweat clothes, jackets, gloves, books, stationery, good food and fun snacks to those who have given so much of their lives for us and our country – and ask so little in return, and often get even less. So, we’re making a personal appeal for participation at this year’s event – on November 8th - that we have done now for seven years that transcends the car hobby and serves a much greater need - the Annual Car Show for the Vets Show ‘n’ Shine at the Veterans Hospital in Menlo Park. This "show" - this day - has always been about the Vets; the cars are incidental. Fair warning: It’s a roller coaster of day emotionally, but we guarantee you that you will come away a changed person – changed for the better for having given back to those who have given so much. Thank you so much for your consideration of this event (and the others you have supported), The Board of Directors of Car Show for the Vets Here are a few more details and the schedule for the day: Sunday, November 8, 2009 9 AM to 3 PM Before 9:15 AM: Arrive at the front lot on Willow Rd. in Menlo Park and detail the cars 9:30 AM: Drivers' meeting and begin parade laps for Nursing Home and Unit 324 Begin ward visits 10:30 AM to 11 AM: Restage vehicles behind gymnasium for main show (Grand Entrance) 11:30 AM: All vehicles are staged behind gymnasium. Blessing of the vehicles Noon: Lunch begins

Page 15: September 2013

At a motivational seminar 3 men are asked to come up to the stage. They are all asked, "When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning upon you, what would you like to hear them say about you? The first guy says, "I would like to hear them say that I was the great doctor of my time, and a great family man." The second guy says, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow." The last guy replies, "I would like to hear them say...... LOOK!!! HE'S MOVING!!!!!"

HEALTH & WELFARE Gerry Chiulli from San Joaquin Chapter recently completed treatment for cancer (Sorry, I didn’t hear what type) and is doing well. Mike Guerreiro, Silicon Valley Chapter, recently experienced a setback in his bladder cancer battle, and is scheduled for surgery in mid-September. Prognosis at this time is good. I’m sad to report that Ron Mendez, a member of the San Gabriel Chapter of Pickups Limited, passed away on August 31st. I have no other details at this time, but will try to pass on any other information I may get.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Pork Chops with Peach Barbecue Sauce

Ingredients 1/4 cup plus 1 kosher salt, divided 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 cups boiling water 3 cups ice cubes 4 bone-in, center-cut pork chops, 1/2-3/4 inch thick (1 3/4-2 pounds), trimmed 2 ripe but firm peaches, pitted and quartered, or 3 cups frozen sliced peaches 1 medium tomato, quartered and seeded 2 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/2 cup chopped onion, preferably Vidalia 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh ginger Preparation Step 1: Place 1/4 cup salt and brown sugar in a medium heatproof bowl. Pour in boiling water and stir to dissolve. Add ice cubes and stir to cool. Add pork chops, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours. Step 2: Puree peaches, tomato and vinegar in a food processor until smooth. Step 3: About 30 minutes before you’re ready to cook the pork chops, heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Add ginger and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the peach puree, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, honey and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until reduced by about half, 20 to 25 minutes. Reserve 1/4 cup of the sauce for basting the chops; keep the remaining sauce warm in the saucepan until ready to serve. Step 4: Preheat grill to medium. Step 5: Remove the pork chops from the brine (discard brine), rinse well, and thoroughly dry with paper towels. Season the chops with 1/4 teaspoon pepper and brush both sides with some of the reserved sauce. Step 6: Grill the pork chops, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 145°F, 2 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve with the warm peach barbecue sauce on the side. The tangy peach barbecue sauce that glazes these pork chops is incredible on grilled chicken or salmon as well. Bone-in pork chops are less likely to dry out. Just make sure to trim away as much fat as possible for healthier results.

Hello Jim, I enjoyed the August Newsletter. I always like to see all the activities and photos. I did replace my top and the truck has now been painted. It turned out great. I replaced the running boards and now have a pair of used chrome ones that I am willing to give to anyone interested in them. Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother. The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. Remember how mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know she can't see very well. I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took elders in the church 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it." Soon thereafter, mom sent a letter to each son. "Milton," she wrote one son, "the house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house." "Gerald," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!" "Dearest Donald," she wrote to her third son, "you have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious."
