Among many things, Bocas is famous for its diverse varieties of wildlife, plants and flowers that are present

across the area. From the sandy beaches to the man-grove swamps, the rainforest to the coral reef, there is

enough to keep the even biggest enthusiast enthralled for weeks on end. However, some of the native species

are incredibly dangerous. If you are planning on coming to the Bocas to travel around in search of rare animals make sure you are properly prepared. Ensure you take

the proper equipment, clothing and make sure you are properly covered for all eventualities that may occur.

The jungle is extremely dense and difficult for normal emergency services to reach, so make sure your policy is fully comprehensive. If you take the proper precautions

and care, you are guaranteed to see some of the most amazing wildlife in the whole of the world.

Bocas Del Toro is a vast expanse of thick, lush jungles

and thriving rainforests. In these ancient tropical forests, over

300 species of vascular plants have been recorded. Though

extremely diverse, the majority of this plant life is made up of

crab wood (or carapa), guaraba, oak, and yellow tree. As the

jungle is so thick, there is very poor light within the canopy

layer. At ground surface there is a predominance of plant life that

does not require much sunlight to thrive including epiphytes and

ferns. Unfortunately, over time the forest has been disturbed by

human activity. Though there is no bright side to this destruc-tion, many of the recovering or

disturbed areas are home to new species of plantlife including

cotonron, cerillo, wild plum, and fig higueron trees.

Bocas del Toro es una vasta extensión de junglas densas y frondosas y florecientes bosques tropicales. En estas antiguas selvas tropicales, más de 300 especies de plantas vasculares han sido registradas. A pesar de ser extremadamente diversa, la mayoría de esta vegetación está compuesta de carapa, guara-ba, roble y tabebuia. Como la selva es tan densa, muy poca luz traspasa las capas del follaje. En la superficie del suelo predomina la vegetación que no requiere de mucha luz solar para florecer, incluyendo la epifita y helechos. Noone — not one swimmer, has

drowned in a riptide on Bocas beaches since Riptide Warning Signs were in-stalled 4 years ago.

Before, we were losing an average of 5 souls a year to our menacing wa-ters, mostly tourists, sometimes, a local child, unaware of murderous currents that lurk within our shores.

Now, we have not needlessly lost any swimmers due to riptide unawareness. Riptide Warning Signs are installed on all windward beaches on Isla Colon

SIGNS OF LIFE - RENEWEDand Bastimentos. And, Riptide Warning Posters are hung at hotels, hostels and public places in Bocas Town and other bay area locales. The bi-lingual signs even include an instructional drawing of how to escape a riptide, for those who speak other languages or do not read.

The printed vinyl signs have with-stood years of weathering, but they finally faded. So, we have replaced the printing with a new & improved ver-sion, and added some new signs where needed. There are now 41 signs on all our hazardous beaches, alerting fun seekers to only find our waters won-drous.

In late November, 2013, we sent an appeal to the people of Bocas, persons and businesses, requesting $25 spon-sors to fund sign renewals. It took us two months to accrue sponsors how-ever; we received an overwhelming amount of support.

After having the vinyl printed and applying it as wallpaper, most of the signs were installed by May 2014, though Sponsor Tags were not placed until June. The logistics of installing signs turned out to be challenging. Af-ter considering varied installation pos-sibilities, the most practical method was to physically take a new vinyl sign to each locale. There we would repair metal as needed and clean surfaces, apply new vinyl over existing; or carry a new wood-framed sign to the locale and screw it to a tree, with esthetic and environmental regard. Since beaches and their use have evolved over time, the total number of signs was unknown until all essential locales were visited, chosen and installed. Only thereafter, Sponsor Tags were assigned, and add-ed to each sign on a second visit.

You may know the story of Stuart Lutz, father of Joey, who drowned at

Red Frog Beach six years ago. Stuart heard of our original sign effort, and demanded to be included as a spon-sor. When we undertook renewing the signs, I contacted Stuart, informed him of how successful our project had been, and told him we’d be renew-ing Joey’s dedication sign at Red Frog Beach. He then insisted on sending his own donation in honor of his son.

These signs save lives, but so do lo-cal surfers and swimmers, experienced with our perilous waters. Often, I’ve heard about a tourist rescued from a riptide, returned to shore on a surf-board or a swimmer’s back. We need to reward this behavior, and encourage it.We also printed new RipTide Warn-ing posters (same graphic as sign), now hung at about 100 locations around Bocas Town and elsewhere throughout the bay.If you have a public place and want a free laminated poster, contact me.

Now we have the opportunity to ex-pand our program. Thanks to our spe-cial sponsor Hostel Heike, Mono Loco Surf School will be teaching a RipTide Rescue Class and hosting periodic Surf Sheriff Salutes, awarding badges to all who take the class or save a life.

The idea of badges came to me as a good use foroursurplus funds. Discuss-ing the idea with Stuart, and the design of a badge, he noted that he happens to be a professional graphic artist, and offered creative support. Nadie – ni un nadador se ha aho-

gado en corriente de aguas revueltas en las playas de Bocas desde que se instalaron los Letreros de Adverten-cia de Corriente de Aguas Revueltas hace 4 años atrás.

Anteriormente, perdíamos un pro-medio de 5 almas al añoen nuestras amenazadoras aguas, en su mayoría turistas y un niño local que no sabía de las corrientes asesinas que acechan en nuestras orillas.

Ahora, no hemos perdido innece-sariamente a ningún nadador debido al desconocimiento de las corrientes de aguas revueltas. Los letreros de Advertencia de las Corrientes son instalados en todas las playas a barlo-vento en Isla Colón y Bastimentos. Y, posters de advertencia de las corrien-tes son colgados en hoteles, hostales y lugares públicos en Bocas y en otros locales del área de la bahía. Los letre-ros bilingües inclusive incluyen un

dibujo instructivo sobre cómo esca-par a las aguas revueltas, para aque-llos que hablan otros idiomas o no saben leer.

Los letreros impresos en vinilo han resistido años en la intemperie, pero finalmente se han difumado. Enton-ces hemos reemplazado la impresión con una versión nueva y mejorada y hemos agregado algunos nuevos le-treros donde se necesitaban. Ahora hay 41 letreros en todas nuestras pe-ligrosas playas, alertando a los aven-tureros.

A finales de noviembre del 2013, enviamos una solicitud a la gente de Bocas, personas y negocios, de pa-trocinios de $25 para la renovación de los letreros. Nos tomó dos meses juntar patrocinadores, sin embargo recibimos una cantidad de apoyo in-creíble.

Después de haber impreso el vi-nilo y de haber sido aplicado como empapelado, la mayoría de los letre-ros fueron instalados para mayo del 2014, aunque las etiquetas de los pa-trocinadores no fueron puestas sino hasta junio. La logística para instalar

los letreros se tornó desafiante. Des-pués de haber considerado varias po-sibilidades de instalación, el método más práctico fue llevar físicamente un nuevo letrero de vinilo a cada si-tio. Allí reparamos los metales que fueron necesarios y limpiamos las superficies, aplicamos el nuevo vinilo sobre el existente; o llevamos un nue-vo letrero enmarcado con madera y lo colgamos en árboles, con cuidado estético y ambiental. Debido a que las playas y su uso han evolucionado con el tiempo, el número total de letreros era desconocido hasta que los sitios esenciales fueron visitados, elegidos e instalados. Entonces allí fue cuando se asignaron las etiquetas de los pa-trocinadores y fueron agregadas en cada letrero en una segunda visita.

Puedes conocer la historia de Stuart Lutz, padre de Joey, quien se ahogó en la playa de Red Frog hace 6 años atrás. Stuart se enteró de nuestros es-fuerzos para la instalación de los le-treros y demandó ser incluido como patrocinador. Cuando emprendimos la renovación de los letreros, contacté a Stuart, le informé sobre qué exitoso

había sido nuestro proyecto y le dije que estaríamos renovando el letrero dedicado a Joey en la playa Red Frog. Él insistió en enviar su propia dona-ción en honor a su hijo.

Estos letreros salvan vidas, pero también lo hacen surfers y nadado-res locales que tienen experiencia en nuestras aguas. FIRST LARGE BOATTO BE BUILT IN BOCAS IN OVER 150 YEARS

Time was Bocas was a bustling sea-port. It started in the earliest days of exploration and exploitation after Columbus first charted these waters. Unique to the Western CaribbeanBo-cas’s safe harbor grew in prominence during the era of commercial sail and dominated commerce transportation in the region throughout the 19th Century. Two separate shipyards, with multiple service facilities were staffed by craftsmen who built, hauled out, re-built and repaired untold numbers of vessels that plied these waters. But as the inescapable winds of change less-ened the importance of an island sea-port the shipyards and the many ves-sels they serviced faded into oblivion.

Although historically inevitable there is no documented evidence of

any large, complex vessel having been built in Bocas in over 150 years. With the possible exceptionsof acoupleof humongous cayucos seen running around, the art and craftsmanship of boatbuilding and ship repairthat was once the trade and sustenance for many local families has slipped away and disappeared from the local econ-omy.

UNTIL NOW as a newly complet-ed 63’ sailing catamaranis about to emerge like a phoenix from the ashes, as a character theme, forty passenger day tour boat, complete with ample shade, fixed seating, large swim plat-form, 16’ water slide, functional gal-ley and two large toilet facilities and changing rooms.

About two years ago Scott Petelle, a

locally renowned old guy surfer, boat-builder and deep ocean sailor was ap-proached about reviving a bankrupt project. “It’s sad,” says Scott, “but it’s common in amateur boatbuilding for people’s dreams to exceed their un-derstanding of the complexities in-volved in these projects.”

Constructionwas originally started-by Jeff Salzman and his buddy J.D., with rambunctious, yet intermittent help from well-intended friends, but admittedly with no boat building ex-perience. It was a situation that caught them up insome bad advice and very questionable procedure. Several months of effort and a ton of money spent produced little in the way of a boat.

“When they first came to me,” says

Scott,“the project had completely stalled out. All options had been ex-hausted. Bills had piled up, rent was way past due and the warehouse was on the verge of clearing the space by pushing what was there out into the swampy lot across the street.”

As an incorrigible boat whore Scott shakes his head at the thought, “these guys put a lot of time and energy into this, but, and not to demean their efforts, there wasn’t anything far enough along to even be considered a boat. It was a construction project in its earliest stage and after pitching it to everyone he knew, no one else was interested in getting involved.”

“Its saving grace was the substan-tial pile of materials and hardware that went with it,” said Scott, “without


those materials I’m afraid I would have just helped push it all across the street and leave to the weather.”

Strong words from a person of con-siderable experience and veteran of several multihull building projects. The largest being the 89’ shallow draft trimaran LONG RANGER. (see<89’cus-tomtrimaranlongranger>)

“Even with the materials it was ob-vious that getting involved would be a huge undertaking of time, expertise and further investment,” says Scott. “It was too much to take on aloneand on a whim.” But romantic ideas have a way of perpetuating themselves and there are few things more romantic than big sailboats under a starry sky. “I couldn’t get it out of my head. I certainly didn’t need it. I’m not sure if I even wanted it, but the thought of the first and only purpose built day tour boat of this size, with all the comfortable amenities to accommodate the increasing flow of tourist to the area; it kept nagging at me.”

This is where Barry Munro came into the picture. Long time Bocas residents Barry and his lovey wife and localen-chantress Lili, of Lili’s Café, love all things Bocas, from our calm lagoons of crystal clear water, to the pound-ing surf over pristine beaches and our spectacular mountain backdrops. What could be more fitting than a big sailboat in front of a gentle breeze, with the setting sun slipping peaceful-ly behind the mountainous scenery? After a few beers and some extensive number crunching the trio formed a partnership to redesign and resurrect the project.

“It’s been a long road,” says Scott, “the new boat is far more complex than anyone originally envisioned. I’ve had to endure a few comments like, ‘oh, isn’t that the boat that those guys from the Toro Loco built?’, but after 25 months of full time work with a com-petent crew and considerable addi-tional financial backing I know exactly who built it; me and Barry built it!”


Hubo un tiempo en el que Bocas era un puerto marítimo. Comenzó en los primeros días de exploración y explotación después que Colón tra-zara estas aguas. Único en el Caribe Occidental, el seguro puerto de Bo-cas creció en prominencia durante la era de la navegación comercial y do-minó el comercio del transporte en la región durante el siglo 19. Dos as-tilleros separados con facilidades de múltiples servicios contaban con ar-tesanos que construían, acarreaban, reconstruían y reparaban innume-rables números de barcos que atibo-rraban estas aguas. Pero mientras los inescapables vientos de cambio dis-minuían la importancia de un puerto marítimo de una isla, los astilleros y

los tantos barcos pasaron al olvido.A pesar de ser históricamente in-

evitable, no hay evidencia documen-tada que pruebe la construcción de algún barco grande y complejo en Bocas en los últimos 150 años. Con las posibles excepciones de un par de enormes cayucos que se han visto, el arte y la destreza para la construc-ción y reparación de barcos que fue alguna vez el comercio y sustento de muchas familias locales han desva-necido y desaparecido de la econo-mía local.

HASTA AHORA, ya que un cata-marán recientemente terminado de 63’ está a punto de resurgir como un ave fénix de las cenizas, para con-vertirse en un bote turístico para

cuarenta pasajeros, completo con un amplia área con sombra, asientos fi-jos, una gran plataforma para nado, un tobogán de agua de 16́ , cocina funcional y dos baños grandes y ves-tuarios.

Hace dos años atrás, a Scott Petelle, un viejo surfer localmente reconoci-do, constructor de botes y marinero de aguas profundas, se le pidió que reviviera un proyecto en bancarro-ta. “Es triste”, dice Scott, “pero es común en constructores de barcos aficionados que los sueños de las per-sonas excedan la comprensión de las complejidades que son parte de estos proyectos”.

La construcción la comenzó ori-ginalmente Jeff Salzman y su amigo J.D., con la inquieta pero intermi-

tente ayuda de amigos con buenas intenciones, pero verdaderamente sin experiencia en la construcción de botes. Fue una situación que los agarró en un mal consejo y un pro-cedimiento muy cuestionable. Varios meses de esfuerzo y mucho dinero gastado produjo muy poco en la for-ma de un barco.

“La primera vez que ellos vinieron a mí”, dice Scott, “el proyecto se ha-bía estancado completamente. Todas las opciones se habían usado. Las cuentas se apilaron, se debía renta y la bodega estaba a punto de limpiar el espacio empujando todo lo que ha-bía allí hacia el lote del otro lado de la calle”.

cordar, “estos muchachos invirtieron mucho dinero y energía en esto, pero, sin despreciar sus esfuerzos, no ha-bía nada que podía considerarse un bote. Era un proyecto de construc-ción en su primera etapa y después de ofrecerlo a todas las personas que conocían, nadie estaba interesado en involucrarse”.

“Lo que lo salvó fue la sustancial pila de materiales y herramientas que venían con él”, dijo Scott, “sin esos materiales, me temo que hubie-ra ayudado a empujarlo al otro lado de la calle y dejarlo a la intemperie”.

“Aun con los materiales era obvio que el involucrarse tomaría mucho tiempo, experiencia y más inver-sión”, dice Scott. “Era mucho para tomar solo y por capricho”. Pero las ideas románticas tienen su mane-ra de perpetuarse y hay pocas cosas más románticas que grandes botes bajo un cielo lleno de estrellas. “No me lo podíasacar de la cabeza. Defi-nitivamente, no lo necesitaba.No es-toy seguro si siquiera lo quería, pero el pensar en el primer y único bote turístico de este tamaño, con todas las cómodas instalaciones para llevar al creciente flujo de turistas al área,

me inquietaba”.Aquí es donde Barry

Munro forma parte de la historia. Los residen-tes de Bocas desde hace mucho tiempo, Barry y su distinguida esposa y la encantadora Lili de Lili’s Café, aman todo de Bocas, desde sus tranquilas lagunas de agua tan clara como el cristal, hasta el fuerte oleaje en las playas prís-tinas y nuestro especta-cular fondo de monta-ñas. ¿Qué podía caber mejor que un gran bote en una gentil brisa con el sol poniente escu-rriéndose pacíficamen-te detrás del escenario montañoso? Después de un par de cervezas y un extensivo cálculo de los números, el trío formó la sociedad para rediseñar y revivir el proyecto.

“Ha sido un largo camino”, dice Scott, “el nuevo bote es mucho más complejo de lo que cualquiera lo imaginó. Tuve que aguantar un par de comentarios tales como: “oh, ¿ese no es el bote que construyeron los muchachos de Toro Loco?, pero des-

pués de 25 meses de trabajo a tiempo completo y un equipo competente y una ayuda financiera adicional con-

siderable, sé exactamente quién lo construyó; Barry y yo lo construi-mos”.

It’s Chili Time in Bocas!

The 9th Annual Bocas Chili Chal-lenge will be held at The Bocas Brewery, located on the beach at the fairgrounds.The annual event is Sunday, September 28,2014. Chili teams can set up and start cooking at 9am. Everything must be pre-pared on site.

This is a favorite yearly event for both locals and visitors. Some of best musicians in Bocas will be jam-ming in theafternoon. Admission is free and chili tasting “kits” are available for $3. The tasters will be the judge of their favoritechili. Lo-cal artist Julie Jorgensen designed event T-shirts and coozies will be available as well. El 9no. Concurso Anual de Chi-le de Bocas se celebrará en The Bocas Brewery, ubicado en la playa en los predios de la feria. El evento anual es el domingo 28 de septiembre de 2014. Los equipos de chile se pueden instalar y comenzar a cocinar a las 9 am. Todo debe prepararse en el sitio.

Este es el evento anual favorito tanto para locales como visitantes. Algunos de los mejores músicos en Bocas esta-rán tocando en la tarde. La entrada es gratuita y los “kits” de degustación de chile estarán disponibles por $3. Los degustadores serán los jueces de su chile favorito. La artista local JulieJor-gensen diseñó los sweaters del evento y también habrá fundas para las bebidas. Julie y “Basti” John Farrow hicieron los deseados trofeos para el 1er, 2do y 3er lugar para que los participantes alardeen. Invitamos a todos a venir y compartir un gran día disfrutando con bebidas, chile y excelente música.
