As summer comes to a close, I know we’ve all had a full summer. Vacations, family gatherings, special holidays, BBQs, you name it - summers are always packed with activity. In the life of the church, summer is usually a slower time. With all the life activities we see things get a bit quiet. But all that begins to change with the arrival of fall. And this fall will be no different. The Richard Sherman Trio Benefit Concert, on September 12th, signals the start of fall activity at Seaside. Be on the lookout for the many blessings all around us. And be on the lookout for a pretty cool, new sermon series starting October 1st. But most especially, be on the lookout for new people in the pews around you and at Fellowship time. My good friend, the Rev. Mary Scifres, has some great words that really speak to all the new life we continue to see at Seaside. Words about relationship and community. Words that help us continue to a great legacy of loving community upon which we stand. Mary writes about how researchers spend a lot of time trying to determine why people move and why people stay in certain communities. Interestingly, almost 90% of Americans stay right where they are (geographically) from one year to the next. One key factor is simply that they have established strong ties to that community. Relationships matter! Churches are microcosms of our larger communities. A church built on strong relationships can provide a strong and healthy foundation to its members, its guests, and the community it supports. When we reach out to one another in prayer, presence, time, and talent, we are creating the strong ties that bind us together through good times and bad. Remember, each one of us is a part of the body of Christ. And each of us can reach out to others, not just myself or Council members. So, make that phone call this week to someone you’re missing. Send an email or a card to the person who just celebrated a joyous occasion. Write a note to someone on the church prayer list. Walk over and hold the hand of someone who’s crying during worship. Introduce the guest sitting next to you to a couple of old friends after worship. Take a cup of coffee to the busy Sunday School teacher. Offer a helping hand to the caregiver who’s helping a loved one negotiate the wheelchair through a crowded hall. Listen patiently to the friend who seems to be troubled, but can’t quite get the words out. When we love one another well, we build a strong community of faith whose bonds of love will hold us together through thick and thin. And we remember the words of Jesus in John 13:34-35 when he said, “Love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Blessings my friends and may Fall 2015 be a wonderful and wonder filled season in the life of Seaside UCC. September Greetings Seaside! The Good News 2 September 2015

Words from our Moderator, Connie Sherman

“September, the harvest month … Summer is over and autumn has arrived.”

Cynthia Wickham School has started again, albeit a little early this year, and so vacation time is over.

“Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet.”

Colette Pastor Dave and Jay lost one of their companions last month. We had two other friends lose their dogs

also, and another lost her cat. I’m sure most of us have lost a dear pet at one time or another. Be sure to keep them as healthy as you can.

Richard and I had a very nice evening last month sharing dinner with two families who are part of the Family Promise organization who help homeless children and their families. Please don’t hesitate to give some time when the Outreach Committee calls. For the time being, I will be handling all the Moderator responsibilities. Dave Champlin has decided to step down from being co-moderator. I thank him for all the help and support he’s given me in the past couple of months. All that being said, have a wonderful, healthy and safe September. Keep the church, pets, friends and school children, and the hungry and homeless in your daily prayers. Just a reminder to let a council member know when you have any concerns regarding the church, so it can be taken to the appropriate committee and/or individual. For those of you who missed it, the Fellowship Committee did a wonderful job of putting together the BBQ. And Pastor Dave gave a short and sweet Vesper's message. The weather cooperated, and we saw some new faces who we hope to see again at a Sunday service. God Bless, Connie Sherman, Moderator

Much thanks to everyone who brought school supplies to the

Annual Summer Service. The supplies benefit children in the South

Bay from low-income families, those living in local shelters, or

referred by schools in our communities. In total, 50 backpacks and

30 bags of supplies were delivered to volunteers at the Love INC

location in San Pedro!

LA Food Bank

Seaside members and friends gathered on Saturday morning, August 8th,

at the LA Food Bank to pack food and help fight hunger. Despite the

temperature – food sorting took place in a giant refrigerator – fun was had

by all! A big thank you goes out to all who supported this worthy event.

Family Promise Outreach Help the Homeless: September 29th

To date, Seaside has acted as a support congregation to Wayside United Methodist Church in Lomita on two separate days this summer. While Wayside provided shelter, Seaside brought bountiful dinners and warm fellowship to two grateful homeless families. The next hosting opportunity is on the horizon in late September, and Seaside will be responsible for Tuesday, September 29th. Can you help with any of the following activities? Dinner Hosts (2): share a meal with the families, and act as host through the evening. (Tuesday, 5:30 - 8:30 pm) Overnight Hosts (2): stay overnight with the families and help organize a light breakfast before the families are picked up for the day. (Tuesday, 8:30 pm – Wednesday, 7 am) Dinner Meal: coordinate with Peg McCartney to help prepare and deliver an entree, side dish, or dessert for up to 16 persons by 5:30 pm.

Working with Family Promise is truly a unique opportunity to help make a difference in homelessness in our local community.

Habitat for Humanity

5 The Good News September 2015

Sisters in Spirit Women’s Group

Friday, September 18, 2015 at 6:30 pm in the Church House

This past month we discussed what voids we’ve had in our lives and how we meet them, deal with them and survive them. The meeting was well attended and the refreshments were wonderful. In September, we will discuss the ideas in the book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” a well reviewed book by Marie Kondo. We hope this will be relevant to us all at one level or another. You’ll be getting an email the week before we meet asking for RSVP’s so we can plan our evening’s refreshments. See you in September!

Prayer Shawl Ministry

We are back on schedule in September! We will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.

Are you keeping someone in prayer?? Do not hesitate to ask for a prayer shawl. We love to send out our gifts of healing love. If you need a prayer shawl, please contact Marilyn James at 310/325-7745 or any other member of the group.
