Take 335 Tyler Pipe Team Members and their families, all the free food and drinks your heart could desire and add in a 47 acre waterpark and you have yourself a memorable family picnic. For the second time in as many years, Tyler Pipe rented Splash Kingdom waterpark on Saturday, September 10th and invited all of our hard working Team Members and their families to attend. On Saturday, September 17th, the African American Cultural

Events Committee sponsored the 7th annual Sickle Cell 5K walk/run

at Woldert Park. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness

about sickle cell disease, which is prominent among African

Americans. Event organizer Greg Buckner said that proceeds from

the event are expected to provide two $300 scholarships to local

students and help fund sickle cell disease research and awareness

efforts. Greg is a 33 year Team Member of Tyler Pipe. This year

Tyler Pipe had over twenty Team Members arrive to participate in

the day’s activities. Tyler Pipe always makes a charitable donation

to support the event as well as pays the registration fee for each

Tyler Pipe Team Member and their family members who attend.

Also on-site was actress and philanthropist Kiki Shepard, a Tyler

native who was best known as the longtime co-host of “It's Showtime

at the Apollo.” Kiki was the honorary guest who did a wonderful job of

getting the participants warmed up for the run/walk. As Faye reminisces, “Back in 2007 when we first started to attend the event we had seven Team

Members participate, each year our numbers continue to grow.”

Way to make a difference Tyler Pipe!

When you live in East Texas and you work in a foundry you tend to try some off the wall

ideas to try and cool down. As you know East Texas had been experiencing a heat wave with

temperatures topping out at around 102. We have tried to beat the heat by transitioning to

our summer hours so we close the plant during the hottest hours of the day and we are

bringing in Gatorade by the pallet, but we found a sweet way to beat the heat! Sno-Kones!

We did this last year and it was a real hit so we geared up and did it again this year. Team

Members lined up and selected their favorite flavor and then could come back and do it all

over again. All you can eat! Your choice, your flavor! A special shout out to our volunteers

HR Manager Faye Pettigrew is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to step-up our game out here at Tyler Pipe and she hit a home run with this idea. On Friday, August 19th Tyler Pipe hosted their first ever Zumba Class. Faye asked her local instructor, Abby Worten, from TMF Fitness Center, to come out and teach a class and it was well received indeed. The class ended with 14 participants and qualified each of Team Members to add points for their Slam Dunk Exercise participation. As an added bonus, all attendees also received free passes to attend one of her classes at the local fitness center where she teaches regularly.

This was such a great hit at Tyler Pipe that it

has been requested to do this monthly. As

Abby stated on her Facebook post, “Zumba at

Tyler Pipe! This was one of the most fun

classes I have had! So glad they invited me.”

And a big THANKS to you Abby for visiting

Tyler Pipe!

However you say “Thank You,” the General Manager of Tyler Pipe, Mr. Greg Simmons, has

devised a pretty good way to say Thank You to his folks. On Thursday, September 8th Greg

ordered the World Famous Stanley’s Bar-B-Q for all of his hourly and salaried staff as a way to

say “Thank You” for all of the hard work and dedication that his Team Members put into their

jobs for the month of August. The event was unplanned & unscheduled so it was a nice

surprise to everyone. As Greg stated during his Team Meeting this quarter, “Foundries are hot and dirty and the work is hard, but you will never find a better class of people than foundry

folk. They are just good people.” It is our belief that this hard work and dedication to one’s job

is what makes Tyler Pipe the industry leader of Cast Iron Soil Pipe in these United States.

Anyone who works in manufacturing knows that there are words that you hate

to hear like bottleneck, backlog & outsourcing. Tyler Pipe recently located,

bought and installed a used CNC machine that is exactly like our current model

in the Fitting’s Millroom. The Millroom churns out 6” and 8” no hub test tees

and depending on the amount of orders received and the production schedule

that means that there are bottlenecks which leads to backlogs and outsourcing.

The situation is exacerbated if, during one of these peak runs, the current CNC

decides to break down. Now Tyler Pipe is going to be able to be more

responsive to customer needs and increase our efficiencies. Since the machines

are exactly alike the parts are interchangeable, our mechanics who are working

on one CNC can use the other as a reference shortening down times and one

operator can run both machines. One machine can run 6” and the other 8” or

both can be set up alike so they can process more of one fitting. In the bottom

picture you will see that the machines are not facing each other. When our

current production schedule is complete the machine will be rotated to resolve

that issue.

“Did You Know” ~ Having trouble sleeping?

Your cell phone or tablet could be to blame

That blue glow coming from your cell phone, tablet, or laptop could be

denying you a good night’s sleep. Cell phones, tablets, computer monitors, and

TV screens all emit blue light, which energizes our eyes and brains.

“Astronomers know our eyes are more sensitive to blue light,” says Dr. James

Stocks, a UT Health Northeast sleep medicine specialist. They protect them-

selves by putting red filters over light sources or wearing red sunglasses.

“The brain clock is set by bright light. Exposure to light in the early morning

sets the stage for the time 12 or 14 hours later when we’re ready to go to sleep.

That’s the best way to set your clock for the next night’s sleep,” he adds. If

you’re exposed to bright light in the late afternoon or evening, that resets the

clock. Watching TV, playing on your cell, doing computer work – these can

interfere with your sleep.

When you wake up tired, it’s hard to enjoy life, and depression and anxiety

can be a problem. You aren’t as alert, which makes it hard to remember facts for

a test or a business associate’s name and interests. Sleepy people aren’t good

drivers, and they have more accidents.

If you wake up at night, you may get up and eat something. This can lead to

weight gain, higher blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease, Dr. Stocks says.

Older children and teens often take their devices to bed. Teens already struggle

with moodiness as they move from childhood to adulthood. Rotten sleep due to

electronics worsens the transition.

Dimming the devices can help, but it’s better to go outside during the day

and minimize bright light in the evening, he adds. Do something relaxing before

you go to bed: read a book, meditate, or take a hot bath. Go to sleep at the same

time every night and get up at the same time every day, regardless of how much

sleep you had the night before.
