If you’ve ever been involved in changing a product’s packaging, you know it can be a long and involved process. Changing to fully compostable, bio-based packaging is exponentially more challenging. That’s why many companies call on Bio4Pack in Rheine, Germany, a pioneer and specialist in helping companies “switch to sustainable packaging made from renewable raw materials.” Bio4Pack calls on Taghleef to provide innovative fi lms that help in its quest to conserve the global environment and eliminate unnecessary waste caused by packaging.

For example, Bio4Pack specifi ed Taghleef’s NATIVIA® fi lms in two of its recent projects: Trafo Hummus Chips packaging and the Peeze Koffi e coffee bag.

The Trafo Chips bag is a laminate structure of 23 µm barrier cellophane fi lm and metalized NATIVIA NTSS 20 µm. It guarantees a WVTR< 1.5 g/m²/24 h (38°C

– 90% RH) and an OTR of 1 cm3/m2/24 h (23°C – 0% RH). The structure is certifi ed four-star OK bio-based by Vinçotte and is industrially compostable according to DIN EN 13432 by DIN CERTCO.

The Peeze Koffi e ground coffee bag involves more complex packaging: a triplex structure comprised of a 20 µm barrier cellophane fi lm, laminated to a high barrier 20 µm NATIVIA based fi lm, and a 40 µm polyester based compostable heat sealable fi lm. The fi nal structure yields excellent barrier performance, as both WVTR and OTR measure 0.5 g/m²/24 h and cm3/m2/24 h respectively.

Taghleef is proud to play an integral role in Bio4Pack’s business of helping companies move to bio-based packaging by creating and supplying products like NATIVIA fi lms. Working together, we are making a positive difference on the industry and the environment.

NATIVIA® sustainable packaging fi lms are made of 100% PLA. More compostable and sustainable packaging is a key measure to ensure our

future.

NATIVIA fi lms are made of Ingeo™ PLA resin from NatureWorks. Polylactic acid is obtained from corn or other starch/sugar sources.

• Plants grow by photosynthesis, absorbing CO2 from the air, minerals and water from the soil and the energy from the sun;

• The starch and sugar content of the plants is converted into lactic acid by microorganisms via a fermentation process;

• Lactic acid is polymerized and becomes polylactic acid (PLA);

• PLA is extruded into fi lm and becomes fl exible packaging;

• Flexible sustainable packaging is composted into CO2, water and biomass;

• Composting: NATIVIA is compostable according to DIN EN 13432 standards: under controlled conditions (T>58°C, rh>90%, presence of

microorganisms), PLA will fully degrade into CO2, water and biomass;

• Biomass is absorbed by plants, and the cycle continues

And we’re proud to have recently received the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Critical Guidance Recognition Certifi cate for our recycle-friendly VISION360 TDS65. This recognition is based on innovation that meets or exceeds challenging test conditions and strict guidance criteria.

Ti News: Can you tell us more about TDS65?

LK: Well, in addition to its sustainability benefi ts TDS65 has up to 65% shrink which allows for 360 degrees of design freedom. Users switching from denser PETG will realize reductions in raw materials, lower shipping weight and costs, and a smaller overall carbon footprint.

Ti News: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about Ti’s exhibit at Labelexpo this year?

LK: Visitors will be able to see and experience Ti’s wide range of advanced label fi lms. Our Labels team looks forward to meeting each guest and sharing how, by working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the packaging industry.

Labelexpo PreviewTi’s Labels Team anticipates great things

Labelexpo Europe is the world’s largest event for the label and package printing industry, and Ti is proud to play a major role. Ti News caught up with Duncan Henshall, Labels Unit Leader Americas, and Lucija Kralj, Labels Unit Leader Europe, for a preview of the upcoming show. Here’s what they had to say about Ti’s participation and highly anticipated booth.

DH: We’re very excited to be exhibiting at Labelexpo. We’re looking forward to seeing visitors’ reactions to our novel booth design, which features oversized replicas of bottles with our wide range of label fi lms like IML, PSL, and WAL.

Ti News: Other than visual appeal, what else will draw visitors to Ti’s booth?

DH: The biggest draw is always the opportunity to interact with our team members who pride themselves on providing solutions as well as products.

Ti News: Any newcomers to the team?

LK: Our newest member is Fabiana Zanier who joins Emanuela Bardi -- both are Product Managers with engineering backgrounds. Emanuela has been with Ti for more than 3 years and has been especially involved in the growth and success of NATIVIA®, our sustainable PLA fi lm. Other key members of the European team are Simone Baldin, Mathias Bredel, Daniela Tramontin all in Sales, and Javier DelBarrio in R&D.

Ti News: What will the Ti Labels team be presenting at the Labelexpo booth?

LK: There will be an unparalleled selection of BOPP fi lms, including our Specialty Label Films range which is available for PSL facestock products as well as over-laminations, and even IML and WAL roll-fed labels. We’ll have our newest PSL fi lm, LSG 60, a white voided, very high yield facestock fi lm with outstanding whiteness and gloss appearance. And we know visitors always appreciate seeing—and touching—our latest DL SoFT TOUcH™ fi lms with unique tactile properties.

DH: We’ll showcase several of our fi lm solutions that truly make the difference in labels. Solutions including IML fi lms like ultra-high yield white voided LIX with Orange Peel fi nish, as well as LIM with its unique Satin fi nish. For customers wanting a metallic look, there will be Titanium™ LTZ and LHZ fi lms. Another exciting highlight will be Ti’s VISION360 TDS heat sleeve shrink fi lms, specifi cally the new low-density TDS65, a sustainable fi lm.

Ti News: What do you mean by a “sustainable” fi lm?

DH: Sustainability is linked to different R-factors (like Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) which are derived from the criteria specifi ed by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). And TDS65 is not only lighter weight for material reduction, it’s

High Barrier FilmsFor even greater performance: the countdown is on

Taghleef HBAX FilmsA clear future with Aluminum Oxide technology

European food safety standards are stricter than ever. The EXTENDO® team has developed a range of high barrier fi lms that meet these standards and outperform all competitors’ fi lms on the market.

It started with a single objective: replace aluminum foil in paper laminate packaging with a structure designed specifi cally to block light and provide an oxygen barrier. With that project fi nished, the development team recognized these structures could solve many more packaging challenges, specifi cally: 1) preventing the migration of mineral oil hydrocarbons to meet upcoming European environmental legislation standards and 2) preventing aroma and fl avor loss, even over extended time.

Barrier to mineral oil hydrocarbons

European legislators are concerned about possible migration of volatile mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOHs) that are frequently found as contaminant in packaging made from recycled cardboard. The problem is that MOHs are considered health hazards and are prone to be consumed when they permeate through the simple liner bags that are commonly used in bag-in-box packaging.

EXTENDO fi lms solve that problem. Working in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging, IVV, the team proved that many EXTENDO grades provide an

excellent functional barrier against MOH (Table 1). In contrast to our competitors, Taghleef can certify conformity with upcoming European legislation concerning mineral oil migration. No other manufacturer is in a position to certify barrier against mineral oil.

Barrier to loss of fl avor

Using this understanding of superior barrier properties, the team extended their investigation into preservation of fl avor and aroma. The team’s idea: what provides barrier against immigration should also provide barrier against loss of fl avor by emigration.

To test this idea, the team worked with FlavoLogic GmbH in Vaterstetten, Germany. The results have been striking. While standard BOPP fi lms retard loss of aromas for no more than a couple of days, the EXTENDO grades retain even the most volatile and readily migrating fl avoring agents for more than 250 days. Field tests have confi rmed the results. Customers have been amazed that even after a six-month shelf life test, the food packaged in EXTENDO fi lm “tastes like it was just freshly made.”

Next generation solution to barrier challenges

Consistent mineral oil barrier of EXTENDO fi lms is now fully established and certifi ed for all kinds of packaging applications. For fl avor and aroma retention, testing must be conducted separately for each different product and packaging combination. Due to the superior performance, ongoing shelf life test times involving this generation of EXTENDO grades are expected to far exceed those of current packages. But the countdown is on.

The next generation EXTENDO High Barrier fi lms are sure to provide even better barrier properties, topped by product visibility through a fully transparent fi lm to meet today’s packaging challenges.

Taghleef Industries Inc. has invested in technology to bring to the market fi lms which are both transparent and provide high barrier. According to the project coordinator in North America for our AlOx initiative, Mr. Francesco Barbangelo, “Changing social attitudes and tastes are driving demand for more sophisticated packages. Consumers desire to see through their food packaging and associate the clear, transparent packages with higher quality products.” One of the fi lms Taghleef offers for clear, high barrier food applications is EXTENDO® HBAX.

For the EXTENDO HBAX product line, Taghleef utilizes aluminum oxide coating technology. In this process an aluminum wire is evaporated within a standard vacuum metallization chamber. Oxygen is then introduced to the cloud of aluminum instantaneously producing aluminum oxide which is deposited on the surface of the fi lm. The resulting EXTENDO HBAX fi lm offers clear barrier protection to food similar to metallized fi lm with the added benefi t of transparency, and it will not interfere with metal detection equipment utilized by food packaging companies.

In the market development of EXTENDO HBAX, Taghleef teamed up with a US based converter, who described the fi lm as “the best AlOx coated OPP in the market.” Taghleef is focused on further applications in confectionery, snacks and bakery, as well as pet food and other opportunities in non-food applications.

INTERPACK 2017 A successful #TiExperienceFor seven days in May, the halls of Messe Düsseldorf were teeming with activity. Interpack, the largest packaging expo in the world, attracted more than 2,800 exhibitors and over 170,000 international visitors. Taghleef hosted a booth that was full of energy and excitement as guests immersed themselves in the #TiExperience.

Taghleef was pleased to have many new products on display - allowing for an exhibition of novel enabling film technologies. The display of technologies was well received by visitors to the booth. For example, visitors explored Ti’s full range of IML films with unique properties and finishes. There was also particular interest in the newest EXTENDO® films with advanced barrier performance. These included EXTENDO XMMH, a matte finish film that can be used to protect products such as flour, pasta, rice, dehydrated legumes, and cereals; and EXTENDO XZRH, a white voided metalized film with ultra-high gas barrier that can be used for food, medical, and consumer applications. XZRH is an ideal replacement for aluminum foil as this film reduces packaging waste and makes recycling easier.

New this year, the booth design included an open lecture area where invited industry experts offered business and technical presentations on important trends and developments in their fields. These well-attended

presentations covered a wide range of topics including High Speed Labeling Technologies, Trends in Flexible Packaging, Bioplastics in a Circular Economy, Aroma Barrier Properties of Functional Films, and more.

On the first day of the expo, Ti held a press event in the lecture area for a discussion on NATIVIA® NESS bio-based film. Taghleef participated in ConTech 2017, the annual technical conference for the Australasia confectionery industry held at the historic Melbourne Cricket Grounds. This year’s agenda highlighted the trend to healthier snack choices.

The keynote presentation “Walking the Tightrope” and other sessions focused on reformulation efforts by the global packaged-food companies to produce snacks which align with health and wellness aspirations of consumers. The main targets of these reformulations are reduction or removal of sodium, sugar, and saturated fats, referred to in the industry as “out with the bad.” There’s also a push toward “in with the good,” with producers adding health-oriented ingredients such as green tea fl avors and protein as line extensions to existing candy brands.

Rapid introductions of new and reformulated products boost demand for innovative packaging solutions. Taghleef is committed to support the industry with a broad range of fi lms specifi cally targeted to confectionary applications.

A global leader in biscuits, chocolate, gum, candy, and powdered beverages, Mondelez is one of the world’s largest snacks companies. Even if you’re not familiar with their name, you’ll recognize many of their most famous and iconic brands, including Nabisco, Oreo, Tang, and Trident.

This past May, Mondelez hosted their Flexibles Workshop on Innovation and Productivity at their facility in Mexico. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate communication between Mondelez and members of the Flexibles supply chain in order to generate new ideas and improve effectiveness. Taghleef, with its regional presence and global reach, was among the few select suppliers and converters invited to participate. Ti’s Jaime Araujo, Karla Olivo, and Christian Hernandez delivered an in-depth presentation on Ti’s capabilities and top ten recommended packaging constructions for Mondelez products.

For barrier protection, Taghleef offers some of the best fi lms on the market, including EXTENDO® high barrier fi lms like HMT and ZUA, and metalized medium barrier fi lms like ZSL and MXT. Additionally, Ti offers a range of NATIVIA® bio-based fi lms. These fi lms are already being used successfully by converters in Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, and Brazil, among others.

Ti’s product portfolio is innovative and expansive, providing solutions for today’s packaging challenges. In addition, Ti has technical service experts, product managers, and country managers right where today’s brand owners need them. Titanium LTZ is a superior in-mold label fi lm. The fi lm can be printed on both sides, is suitable for both sheet-fed offset and rotary print formats, and does not require a primer coating. Titanium can be used on both small and large containers and gives 100% metallic coverage regardless of label size, with no loss of anti-static and chargeability properties. This multi-layer fi lm has the metallic component as one of the inner layers, resulting in unmatched scratch resistance and excellent ink adhesion.

Beyond replacing just pails and buckets, Titanium LTZ has already found application in the beverage cup market. A number of cinema, entertainment, and sports organizations have come to value the advantages LTZ offers. A New iniTiative

Now that we’ve celebrated our tenth anniversary, it’s time to start off the next decade with a new campaign that captures the spirit of our Taghleef culture and the dedication and passion of our employees throughout the world.

We’ve selected specifi c words containing the letters Ti that refl ect the qualities and values we bring to work every day and that we share with the world through our products and customer commitment. These words are symbolic of the way we at Taghleef all channel our inner Ti. They have been graphically embellished and digitally animated (when appropriate) to visually represent the energy and vitality of our company and our people.

Each employee will have the opportunity to choose one word from the following that resonates most, and have that word graphically incorporated into his or her email signature going forward. You’ll also see these word graphics throughout other Ti communications, including our website, advertising, and print collateral.

Innovative: Always in pursuit of a better idea, product, process, resource, solution.

Potential: Recognizing both what is and what could be. Nurturing talent and ideas.

Possibilities: Pushing beyond the obvious and expected. Thinking on a larger scale.

Collaborative: Working together internally and externally to bring the power of synergy to our solutions.

Expertise: Bringing together a breadth and depth of the appropriate knowledge and experience to address the issue at hand.

E ective: Doing the right thing, at the right time, with the right people, products and processes.

These are just a sample of the Ti words you may see in our communications. Of course, you already experience them in our day-to-day culture and commitment. Can you think of other Ti words to add to this list? Which one resonates most with you?

What’s your Ti word?
