PACKING OUR OWN SANDWICHES
It is almost that time again. In a few weeks our summer/beach season will be winding down, (traffic will hopefully be winding down!), and we will be gearing up for our High Holiday season together. With Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah a few weeks away, it is once again that time for us to gather with friends, family, and community members for another season of reflection and renewal as we celebrate Rosh Hashanah 5779.
I often find that the transition into the High Holidays is not an easy one. It can be challenging to go from the relaxing, slower paced moments of summer to the intense, introspective, joyful, yet serious Hebrew months of Elul and Tishrei. It is with this in mind
that I offer the following story originally shared by Rabbi Albert Lewis (z''l), whose name you may recognize as the main character in the Mitch Albom book entitled Have a Little Faith.
Rabbi Lewis used to share a story about a man named Joe. During his lunch break at work, Joe took a seat on a bench next to a fellow worker and began rummaging in his paper sack. He pulled out a sandwich, unwrapped it, and muttered, “Yich, peanut butter!” He opened the next sandwich, examined it and again muttered in disgust, “Ugh, peanut butter!” Joe left both sandwiches uneaten. His buddy, who was greatly enjoying a cheese sandwich, sympathetically asked, “If you don’t like peanut butter sandwiches, why don’t you ask your wife to fix you some other kind?” Joe frowned at him and said, “Wife? I packed these lunches myself!”
Rabbi Lewis taught:
Like Joe, many of us are constantly complaining about problems and conditions that we have packed in our own lives. And like Joe, many of us are just not willing to face up to the fact that we ourselves made the sandwich. If we are upset about our spouse, or our children seem to be inconsiderate, or if we are angry with another person, we regard them as the cause of our problems. Right?
The answer is sometimes,“wrong!” It is true that there are some areas of our lives over which we have little or no control. But many of us have fallen into a routine, a habit, a way of living that is our doing not someone else’s. Every day, we, as it were, pack our own sandwiches and then complain that we don’t like them.
It is this season of the year that reminds us that we can change the pattern. We can, if we are so inclined, change the contents of our sandwich to something more tasty, more meaty, more healthy, more enjoyable. Or we can end the year complaining: “Yich! another peanut butter sandwich!” And then start the New Year over again with the same menu. Reimer, World of the High Holidays, Volume 2
It is a story that I have shared before, because it reminds us that that there are many aspects of our lives in which we do have control. There are many daily choices that we make, consciously and unconsciously, which are ours alone to determine. Consider for a moment – what are the sandwiches that you have packed this year even as you complain that you don't like them? What are the habits that you complain about which you may have more control over than you are willing to admit? What are the priorities that you struggle with, the relationships that you bemoan, the character traits that you wrestle with, and the choices that you made this past year – all of which you regret? Rosh Hashanah, and the month of Elul which precedes it, is an opportunity for each of us to take a good look in the mirror at the choices that we made this year, and empower ourselves to remember that they were often just that – our choices.
So what do you want to change this year? What are your top three spiritual goals for Rosh Hashanah 5779? What are three ways in which you want to literally do teshuvah, and turn things around? And what do you need to do to ensure that this year, you are going to pack a different sandwich? B'hatzlacha, good luck in your journey. May this be the year in which you make positive changes to those areas in your life over which you do have some control.
Jane-Rachel and I wish you and your families a Shanah Tovah U'metukah, a good and sweet new year.

How did Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, under threat of death, persuade over 1,000 of his fellow Prisoners of War to defy their German captors and save the lives of 200 American Jewish soldiers? The answer is RODDIE’S CODE. This was the code by which he lived his life, the tenets of which made every man his brother. Join us to hear Pastor Christopher Edmonds relate the story of his heroic father’s courage during World War II and its relevance today as our nation is torn by dissension and violence. Pastor Edmonds’ presentation will contain film clips of the veterans who witnessed this momentous event and will highlight turning divisiveness into finding common ground to ensure a better future for our children.

Meet Mary Morris
author of Gateway to the Moon
From award-winning novelist Mary Morris, Gateway to the Moon is a vivid novel that
travels from 15th Century Spain when Jews and Muslims were forced to convert or be expelled, to 20th Century Entrada de Luna in New Mexico. There, Spanish Catholic
residents light Friday night candles and do not eat pork, despite their lack of awareness of their religious heritage. What is it like to leave everything behind? What despair and
fears of betrayal accompanied the Inquisition? What poverty led a young man to a wealthy family whose traditions are much like his own?
Mary Morris is a professor of creative writing and the author of The Jazz Palace, A Mother’s Love, and House Arrest. She received the Rome Prize for Literature and the
Anisfield-Wolf Award for Fiction.
Read the book before you come. Books on sale at the temple office for $20.

NEED A MINYAN? REACH OUT THROUGH THIS APP!
A core Jewish mitzvah is reciting mourner's kaddish at a loved one's yarhzeit and during the mourning period. Congregation Torat El strives to provide a regular morning and evening minyan to allow congregants and guests to perform this mitzvah. In an effort to maintain an evening minyan, we have created a group text using the WhatsApp application. Volunteers who join the group are contacted when the need for an evening minyan arises, either in advance or at the start of the minyan. We have been successfully using the group text in order to provide a minyan, and we hope to continue in this success. If you would like to join the group text as a volunteer for evening minyan, please do the following: 1. Download and install the WhatsApp application on your cell phone.
2. E-mail Steve Fineberg at [email protected] with your name and cell phone number.
3. Open WhatsApp on your cell phone and accept the CTE Minyan group when prompted.
If you would like to request a minyan in advance without joining the group text, please do the following: 1. E-mail Steve Fineberg at [email protected] with the date on which you need a minyan.
2. Come to evening minyan on the date you requested. Volunteers will be present.
Please contact Steve Fineberg at [email protected] with any questions.
